After Jimmy Savile's death in 2011, reports began to emerge that he had sexually abused hundreds of people throughout his life. Savile had been one of the country's best-known entertainers, a darling of the BBC, commanding audiences of millions on shows like Top of the Pops and Jim'll Fix It. Surely his criminal activities were known by those close to him? Just how deep did the cover up run? James and Jol are this week joined by journalist Meirion Jones, who's Newsnight investigation into the suspected paedophilic crimes of Savile was famously dropped at the 11th hour, not long after Savile's death. He also happens to be James's boss. Meirion reveals who at the BBC knew what at the height of Savile's fame, and opens up about the Newsnight scandal that engulfed the BBC in 2011, resulting in Meirion becoming the news rather than just reporting on it. Meirion Jones is the editor of The Bureau of Investigative Journalism and features in the Netflix documentary Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story. Samantha Brown was just 11 years old when then celebrity DJ Jimmy Savile started sexually assaulting her in a back room of her own church as she prepared the collection plates for mass. While daring to be nearly in plain sight of the congregation and the priest, Savile would cover her mouth and do whatever he wanted with her. This happened at least 20 times throughout her youth. Same place, same time. Samantha often wondered at all the turned heads who never bothered to notice “WHY CAN'T YOU SEE ME?” she thought. Samantha is one of hundreds of children and others that Savile ruthlessly abused. Why couldn't anyone see them, help them or stop him — for decades? Today we analyze this case of a serial pedophile and sexual abuser who hid in plain sight using the framework of a new Netflix documentary "Jimmy Savile - A British Horror Story".#hernameisSamanthaBrown#hundredsofvictims#whycan'tyouseeme?#netflix#jimmysavile#britishhorrorstoryOUR SPONSORS MAKE OUR SHOW POSSIBLE, PLEASE SUPPORT THEM!BOMBAS - Bombas designed their socks, shirts, and underwear to be the clothes you can't wait to put on every day.Everything they make is soft, seamless, tagless, and has a luxuriously cozy feel. Kathleen opens the show drinking a Jalapeno Pineapple Pilsner from Omaha's Brickway Brewery. She's fascinated with Warren Buffett, and not only drove past his house in Omaha but also asked the local bartenders at Billy Frogg's bar and the Spaghetti Works if they've ever met him. She has rave reviews of her stay at The Farnam hotel and as a true pyro-Termite, describes the immense joy she had drinking wine and watching steaks grill in the hotel's restaurant. “GOOD BAD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food AND in continuing her search for the best Ranch, Kathleen samples Dorothy Lynch salad dressing, which she LOVES the tang of and applauds Nebraska for the taste. She also tastes Iowa's Farmer's Bootleg Homestead Ranch, which has a dill kick that she likes but prefers a tangier Ranch. She finishes her tasting with Dolly Parton's new Duncan Hines Buttercream icing, which is the best thing she's tasted in ages. QUEEN'S COURT: Kathleen is thrilled to announce that with the help of Queen Dolly's influence, Taco Bell is bringing back the Mexican Pizza. Dolly's been very busy lately, as her new line of Duncan Hines cake mixes have been released and Kathleen was fortunate enough to find a few of the Banana Cake mixes. UPDATES: Kathleen gives updates on the Maryland snake owner, the Villagers who were charged with voting more than once in the last Federal election, more mask fighting results in the highest FAA fines in history, Japan's Monkey Queen prevails, Germany seizes a massive Oligarch-owned yacht, and France seizes Roman Abramanovich's luxury chateau. “HOLY SHIT THEY FOUND IT”: Kathleen is amazed to read about the return of Charles Darwin's missing original notebooks to Cambridge University, and scientists have found a new body part in the human lungs. 300K BABY EELS FOUND IN DUTCH SUITCASE: Kathleen rereads an article multiple times to determine the reason that 300K baby eels, otherwise known as “elvers” or “glass eels,” were being illegally shipped through Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. The elvers are a protected species and were destined for sale in Asia, fetching an approximate price of 6.2M Euro.GEN Z + MILLENNIALS DISRUPTING POST-PANDEMIC WORKFLOW: A big fan of “the children,” Kathleen laughs out loud reading an article advising that Gen Z and Millennial members of the workforce are not just demanding flexible work hours and environments, but they want to work for companies that align with their own personal beliefs and values and will go jobless rather than compromise this position. PROTESTER GLUES WRIST TO FLOOR AT NBA GAME: Kathleen laughs reading an article about a member of Direct Action Everywhere, an animal rights activism group, who attempted to glue herself to the floor of the Minnesota Timberwolves arena. The group is concerned with an egg farm owned by Glen Taylor, the longtime former Timberwolves governor.BRITISH DJ HORRORS REVEALED: With the recent release of Netflix's documentary on British DJ Jimmy Savile, Kathleen reads the backstory about the deceased DJ's life and career, his history of committing sexual abuse, and the scandal that occurred after his death in 2011 when numerous complaints were raised about his behavior.STUCKEY'S PECAN LOG MAKES A COMEBACK: Kathleen loves a fun gas station on a road trip, and is excited to read that Stephanie Stuckey, the granddaughter of the man who founded the famous Stuckey's convenience store chain, recently purchased back her family's business and wants to return the diminished brand to national prominence.WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK: Kathleen recommends watching “Hillsong: A Megachurch Exposed” on Discovery Plus, and “Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story” on Netflix. For starters, we tuck into what we've been watching. Have you ever wondered what an animated series about bathing innovations would look like? Then wonder no more as James reviews Netflix's Thermae Romae Novae. Elsewhere, HBO's Somebody Somewhere is under the spotlight for some much deserved UK attention. Meanwhile, Dan reflects on Gordon Ramsey's Apprentice wannabe show Future Food Stars which isn't the best that Britain has to offer but thankfully isn't the worst unlike Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story (a comment on the man and not the quality of the show itself). For our Mains, we digest Marvel breaking Guinness World Records, ponder over a film we won't get to see for another 100 years and rejoice in the announcement of Apple TV's Severance Season 2. And finally for Desert, the much needed icing on an audio cake…. It's Fresh! Disney+'s latest exclusive film which sees Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan developing a blossoming romance but all may not be as it seems… Trust us and go in blind to this one, you will be rewarded.
Today's a very special episode as we're joined by Rowan Deacon, the director of Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story. The two part docuseries looks at TV star Jimmy Savile, who charmed a nation with his eccentricity and philanthropy until sexual abuse allegations exposed a shocking unseen side of his persona. We sit down with Rowan who told us what drew her to the project and what she wants people to take away from the films. She also gave us a fantastic TV recommendation too. The shows mentioned this week include: Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story The Power of the Dog Is It Cake? Each week, join hosts and IRL friends, Tolani Shoneye (of The Receipts podcast fame) and Gena-mour Barrett (who works for Netflix) as they discuss what they're watching, and what they think *you* should be watching.
