This week we have the brand new stage adaptation of Malorie Blackman OBE's novel 'Pig Heart Boy' as the touring production visited the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre with description by Professional Audio Describer Faith Florence Agaba. About Pig Heart Boy: Based on the novel by Malorie Blackman. Adapted by Winsome Pinnock Is it better to have a pig's heart that works … than a human heart that doesn't? Anto Yeldezian is a Tāmaki Makaurau based artist of Armenian heritage. His latest exhibition, Arena, is currently showing at Coastal Signs Gallery. The works in Arena often play with bright and bold colours - often being mixed medium, with images, sketches and painting superimposed onto one another. Coastal Signs writes that in Anto's paintings, ‘[. . . ] images from a myriad of sources are layered on top of one another and synthesized, very adeptly, into painterly tableau. 'The works in Arena are, as the title suggests, often organised around game boards – such as Snakes & Ladders and Noughts & Crosses – and representations of contested territories, both fictional and otherwise'. Beth had a kōrero with Anto about Arena and his artistic process

We're back again and we're finally finishing up our commentary on the February 1994 issue of Nintendo Power. We start off talking about an interesting device that put Nintendo games in airplanes and maybe inspired the Wii, kinda? Who knows? Also, quick behind-the-scenes note; the first musical break is from a game called Noughts and Crosses which was a title exclusive to certain Gateway Systems. It's basically just fancy tic tac toe. There was also a Hangman game and a slide puzzle called Postcard Puzzle. Noughts and Crosses is the only one we have footage and music of. We're also talking about Metroid comics, politicians, X-Men, Simpsons, Startropics 2, and a whole lot more. So thank granny, sit down, and listen to this podcast. You have been watching too much tv already.

Robert now has a happy and healthy life and he is a hero for telling his story today to help others. Robert was recently nominated for an Olivier Award for his role in 'Come From Away' in The West End at The Phoenix Theatre and has a huge body of theatre work at all the top venues. Masih Alinejad, Iranian American journalist, women's rights campaigner and a Time Woman of the Year 2023, is an outspoken critic of the Iranian government. She joins Anita to talk about her fight for women's rights in Iran. ‘Just Saying' is a memoir by the bestselling author Malorie Blackman, former Children's Laureate, best known for her Noughts & Crosses series for young adults. Malorie received eighty-two rejection letters before she finally found a publisher. Seventy published books later it is no exaggeration to say that Malorie Blackman has changed the face of British literature forever. Malorie joins Nuala to discuss her life and works. 650 years ago a woman we only know as Julian of Norwich produced a book which challenged the ideas of the time about sin and suffering. It presented a radical vision of love and hope that “All Shall Be Well and All Shall Be Well and All Manner of Things Shall be Well”. We hear from a listener, Sophie, about the words that she turns to for motivation and encouragement. Blended families are created for all sorts of reasons. Because of break-ups or the death of a parent, through fostering or adoption. Kate Ferdinand, previously Kate Wright of The Only Way is Essex fame, married the former footballer Rio Ferdinand in 2019, four years after his first wife Rebecca and mother of their three children, had died. As a new step mum she struggled partly because she felt very alone and that no-one understood what she was going through. But there was also very little out there to help someone in her situation – the step-parenting parts of books and websites were tiny, she says. Kate has now written her own book - How to Build a Family. She joins Anita to discuss her experiences. Most of us are familiar with the story of Anne Frank, the young Jewish girl who wrote a diary while hiding from the Nazis with her family, in Amsterdam during the Second World War. You are probably less familiar with the name of the woman who agreed to keep them safe in those secret attic rooms. Miep Gies was Otto's secretary, and when they were eventually located and sent to their deaths, it was Miep who found Anne's diary and kept it. A new TV series tells the whole story from Miep's perspective, and she is played by the British actor Bel Powley. Bel joins Nuala to talk about playing an ordinary woman who displayed extraordinary courage. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Hanna Ward

In a special episode to mark International Women's Day 2022, multi-award winning author, screenwriter and playwright Malorie Blackman OBE joins host Zawe Ashton to tell her why writing about black joy is so important to her. After being discouraged from being a teacher because of the colour of her skin, Malorie went on to write over 70 children's, YA and picture books (some of which have been adapted into hugely successful TV dramas and stage plays), and was the first black Children's Laureate between 2013 and 2015. As she tells Zawe, the omission of black characters from the books she read as a child fueled her fire, and despite receiving over 80 rejection letters on her writing journey, she persevered. For many readers of colour, her work has allowed them to finally see themselves in literature, and her Noughts and Crosses series of six titles and three novellas are now considered one of the most substantial contributions ever to be made to young adult fiction. Malorie's book choices are: ** Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë ** Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier** The Color Purple by Alice Walker** The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison ** The Women of Brewster Place by Gloria Naylor Zawe Ashton, acclaimed actress, director, playwright and author, hosts this special edition of the chart-topping Women's Prize for Fiction Podcast. The new Women's Prize Podcast season continues to celebrate the best fiction written by women, by interviewing inspirational women about the books that have most influenced their life and career.
