Sunday Edition Presents: Teaching Audio Description a conversation Live from the Adrian Archt Center with Dr. Joel Snyder & Eric Lipp C.E.O. of Open Doors Organization explains new regulations flying with Guide Dogs This week Anthony and the Sunday Edition crew go behind the scenes live with Dr. Joel as he imparts his vast knowledge of Audio Description with the new crop of Audio Describers at the Adrian Archt Center in Miami. We will get to hear some of the sample description they come up with and we will chat about the process. Dr. Joel Snyder is known internationally as one of the world's first “audio describers,” a pioneer in the field of Audio Description, a translation of visual images to vivid language for the benefit, primarily, of people who are blind or have a vision impairment. Since 1981, Dr. Snyder has introduced audio description techniques in over 40 states and 65countries and has made thousands of live events, media projects and museums accessible. Most recently, Dr. Snyder was named a Fulbright Scholar to train audio describers in Greece and Ukraine over a four-week period. In 2014, the American Council of the Blind published Dr. Snyder's book, The Visual Made Verbal – A Comprehensive Training Manual and Guide to the History and Applications of Audio Description, available as an audio book, in Braille,in screen reader accessible formats, and in English, Polish, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, and Chinese print editions. Then in our second hour we will discuss the changing regulations for flying with our Guides, travel forms and the founding of Open Doors Organization. **Eric Lipp, Executive Director, Open Doors Organization ** Eric founded Open Doors Organization (ODO) in 2000 after personally experiencing the restrictions that people with disabilities face in everyday life due to a lack of awareness and knowledge by businesses. In the 23 years since, he has assisted countless companies, primarily in travel, tourism, and transportation, to better serve the disability community while also encouraging individuals with disabilities to travel. Among his most notable accomplishments are the four Market Studies on Travelers with Disabilities, most recently in 2020, which are viewed in the travel industry as the definitive source for statistics on travel by Americans with disabilities. Eric has worked on numerous government-funded research projects focused on accessible travel under the United States National Academy of Sciences including the Multimodal and Accessible Travel Standards Assessment, ACRP Report 210 “Innovative Solutions to Facilitate Accessibility for Airport Travelers with Disabilities", and the Accessible Transportation Technologies Research Initiative's "User Needs Assessment", which determined the general categories of disability recognized in travel-related research today. Eric is a recognized expert in universal design, the unique needs of people with all types of disabilities, and U.S. and international disability regulations. He sits on multiple advisory boards including those of Alaska Airlines, Amtrak, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, United Airlines, and the Transportation Security Administration's Aviation Security Advisory Council, where he co-chairs the Passengers with Disabilities Working Group. He was also recently appointed to the United States Travel and Tourism Advisory Board under the U.S. Department of Commerce. Find out more at https://acb-sunday-edition.pinecast.co

Meet Joel Snyder, Ph.D!
If an IBM PC can see the light, why not a Mac? Original text by Joel Snyder, SunWorld July 1993. This review calls A/UX “complete”, but that's meaningless until another Vancouverite demonstrates that it is possible to port Doom (sans audio) to it! The moment it worked. The usual emulators won't run A/UX since it requires an MMU. You'll need Shoebill (abandoned by the developer now that he works at Apple) or QEMU's Quadra 800 emulation. Watch someone else suffer so you don't have to: netfreak walks you through installing, patching, and configuring A/UX on a Macintosh SE/30. Boy is it slow. netfreak maintains some useful A/UX resources and a knowledge base. Mr. TenFourFox/OldVCR Cameron Kaiser has documented some interesting MachTen hacks and notes. If you find MachTen crashes shortly after launch, you might have a faulty 68LC040 CPU. I hope you bought AppleCare. “[X11 performance was] … about six times faster than a Sun 3/50.” Six times as fast as slow is still slow. Macworld November 1992 reports “Even on a [Quadra] 950, please note, A/UX is slow–three times slower than Unix on a midrange Sun workstation.” A/UX Product Manager Richard Finlayson's unabridged demo of A/UX 2.0 from the April 1990 Apple VHS User Group Connection tape. Apple's self-running Macromedia Director demo of A/UX 2.0, complete with simulated Extended Keyboard II typing sounds. Spot the two errors in the simulated CommandShells. The example user might be a play on Richard Finlayson's name.

This week we conclude our discussion with Joel Snyder about Audio Description in the USA and internationally. We discuss some of the advocacy strategies likely to prove most successful for Australian consumer groups and individuals. As well, a call for upcoming stories. Next week we'll be discussing discrimination against Blind people, this time, not in the context of Guide Dog refusals, but against individuals just going about their daily business. We want to hear your discrimination story in brief, either as a recording or written down. We want to know what happened and what you did about it. Please send your recording or E-mail to new.horizons@bca.org.au or leave a message on the BCA feedback mailbox. Your story may be featured on the programme.
This week, we continue our discussion with Joel Snyder. We focus on the provision of AD on television, discuss the trials conducted in Australia, and some other methods of the provision of AD, gaining ground in the United States.
In this first episode for 2023, we hear the first part of an interview with Joel Snyder. Joel has been involved in Radio Reading services and audio description for over 40 years. He discusses the genesis of AD in the USA, and some of the background surrounding Audio Description on television.
It's an all new That Real Blind Tech show. Kicking off the New Year, Brian and Ed welcome in Dr. Joel Snyder, from Audio Description associates and the Founder of the Audio Description Project. We start the interview finding out how Joel started working in audio description. Joel explains what the early days of audio description was like including how difficult it was to convey what audio description actually was when people had no clue what it was. We find out that a certain somebody who the Force is strong in is aware of audio description. Joel walks us through some of the work he has done with museums to make the museums an accessible experience to the blind. We then discuss how the initial work flows to deciding what would and would not work for audio description came about, and how audio description has changed over the past several decades. We discuss what audio description was like in the VHS and DVD days. We then find out what Joel's goals were when he founded the Audio Description Project. we discuss how different describing a museum tour is compared to film and TV, and how different describing a live event is compared to pre-recorded. We then discuss how amazing most Audio Described content is on the streaming services. We then discuss Joel's book Audio Description, The Visual Made Verbal. The conversation then moves to the networks, Congress requiring a minimum number of described hours, and the job the networks are currently doing with audio description. It would not be an interview about audio description if we did not discuss the controversial topic of text to speech audio description. Which then turns us to the topic of when content switches from one streaming platform to another, why doesn't the audio described tracks follow with it. We wrap up discussing methods of streaming audio described content to your phone and Spectrum Access. Educator and advocate Joel Snyder is one of the pioneers of audio description which makes the visual verbal for people who are blind or have low vision. Just as captioning or signing gives people who are deaf or hard of hearing access to media and performing arts, audio description provides a similar service to people who are blind or have low vision. It's a specialized skill: AD must provide a narration of what a show is depicting visually, and it must do so without stepping on dialogue or musical cues. And there is no question: the use of AD is removing barriers to culture for blind people. And Joel Snyder was there from beginning. In the podcast, Snyder takes us back to the origins of AD, the differences in providing AD for live-theater or dance as opposed to film, television, or streaming, how technology is shaping the future of AD, and his work at the Audio Description Project at the American Council of the Blind. His experiences have included the administration of staff in 58 media libraries across the United States and was responsible for direction of computer and Internet operations resulting in national first-ever advancements in accessible media creation, delivery and retrieval. He designed and coded the very first project website, which grew to become the current Internet-based media cataloging, classifying, and scheduling system to meet the needs of students with a sensory disability, their families, and the professionals who work with them. Over the past ten years, under his guidance as Director, the project has seen an increase in usage and higher numbers of new members. New technology developments occurred including the iOS app, AppleTV app, Roku channel, interactive transcripts, and embeddable player integration with Learning Management Systems. New project initiatives were begun, such as direct service to students enabling them to take more control over their own learning both in the classroom and “on the go.” An expanded Learning Center which includes e-Learning training opportunities for teachers and other professionals was implemented as part of a complete website redesign. Dr. Joel Snyder explores the history and future of audio description. How did audio description start? Who did it? Why has closed captioning become ubiquitous while audio description has to fight for hours? It's ten years since the CVAA was passed; the anniversary is this month! Should we push for changes? There are very few people who have the comprehensive knowledge of audio description that is possessed by the ACB Director of the Audio Description Project, Joel Snyder.
Episode Notes As the Florida Council of the Blind takes the bold, first step on the Path to the Future, Sunday Edition presents: A round-up roundtable discussion with Movers & Shakers from both, FCB and ACB leadership. Additionally, we will be joined by members of the ACB Radio team, who will give us insight into the”behind the scenes” workings of putting on the first virtual State Convention. We will discuss highlights of FCB's Convention and what has been learned and will be applied to ACB's National Path to the Future in July. Callers with comments or questions are welcome. In our second hour, we will be joined by Joel Snyder of the Audio-description Project to chat about his life and his passion project. Please join us with your comments and questions. Joel is the leading expert in all things audio-described, and this will be a fun and very informative conversation. If you have any questions about how to access or use Zoom for the show, we can be reached at: celebrationac@aol.com
Episode Notes Sunday Edition with Anthony First and foremost, let me say thanks for all of the great feedback, compliments and well wishes for the show. I am overwhelmed with the response to the first episode and am very excited to share with you all that, because of the enormous response, we will be going live... Yes, thats LIVE on May 17th. More on that later! this week's Sunday Edition is all about CONVENTION! Movers and Shakers features a great conversation with the matriarch of convention, Janet Dickelman; about her road to, love of, and challenges of being the “MOMMA" of our beloved yearly event. We also chat about what life is like when she is not planning, following up, and generally herding Convention into shape! Then we are joined in the happenings segment by President Spoone for a roundtable discussion featuring the Path to Convention. We address the burning questions we all have as to how this will all be pulled off, and Janet and Dan do not shy away from the hard questions. Lastly, in our In The Spotlight segment Dan stays to tell us all about his Path to President, his vision and things get personal. Dan gives good talk and it is a conversation not to be missed. Throughout the show we highlight convention program events and you will hear from a few surprise affiliate voices! I would like to thank the affiliate presidents for their timely and fun submissions. Join us this Sunday at 1pm EST on ACB Radio Mainstream for this exciting show and look out next week for an amazing conversation with Anthony Stevens as well as a conversation with Brian Velasquez and the Advocacy Happenings he is achieving in New York City. I will also be bringing you all a fun surprise for the movers and shakers segment. Now back to the LIVE FORMAT FCB is the first state affiliate to bring their yearly convention to Virtual participation and will be broadcasting live over ACB Radio. Sunday Edition will feature a live recap and analysis of the event as the show goes live right after the convention on May 17th!! Awesome MOVER and SHAKERS will join me live to discuss what I know will be a success and what that means for the National Path into the Future!! I will also be joined in the second half of the show by Joel Snyder of the audio description project for a fun and information-rich question and answer session.
