CAUDES stands for Certified Audio Description Specialist. This week on Outlook we're speaking with Lolly Lijewski and Kim Charlson about recently released draft certification guidelines and criteria open for public comments until March 31st. Kim is Chair of the Academy for Certification of Visual Rehabilitation & Education Professionals/Subject Matter Experts Committee and Lolly and co-host Kerry met originally when taking some AD training and have since gone on to form a group of blind and sighted members who practice the art of crafting audio description together because we believe the collective collaborative team makes for a more authentic and representational finished product. Now we have some thoughts and some questions about these proposed and drafted certification guidelines and Kim is with us to lay it all out. Everyone involved only wants the best quality product in the end for blind consumers and we're happy to have this discussion as we look ahead to next steps in audio description's evolution. John, AKA Mac The Movieguy, has a degree in Cinema Studies and has been critiquing movies since the 90s and before he went blind - his YouTube channel has over 1000 videos all about movies and audio description in film. This week on Outlook we're speaking with John Stark and getting his movie critic expertise on audio description (AD) in film, including how watching a movie with sighted people is made better by a more accessible movie going experience for all. John, as someone who was sighted and then went blind, is able to offer his perspective from both sides of the issue. Speaking of multiple sides of things, John shares about his placement and history working at the cinema (as most movie theatre employees unfortunately know very little about AD), more about his first experiences and memories learning what audio description is and how it works, and the struggle to be taken seriously as a film critic who's blind, but his specialty focusing on AD only makes his videos all the more well rounded and interesting. What does John look for in a film as far as good quality audio description goes? He answers this question and much more, along with giving examples of shows and films he's found with it because he's done the work and knows the lay of the land, putting his thoughts on his Mac The Movieguy Youtube Channel. Plus, he shares his pics for the best paired films with their AD of 2023. We discuss audio description all the time on this show, as a way of getting listeners familiar with what it is and why it's important. In this compelling book, storyteller extraordinaire Matthew Dicks presents wonderfully straightforward and engaging tips and techniques for constructing, telling, and polishing stories that will hold the attention of your audience (no matter how big or small). It's an all new That Real Blind Tech show. Kicking off the New Year, Brian and Ed welcome in Dr. Joel Snyder, from Audio Description associates and the Founder of the Audio Description Project.   We start the interview  finding out how Joel started working in audio description. Joel explains what the early days of audio description was like including how difficult it was to convey what audio description actually was when people had no clue what it was.   We find out that a certain somebody who the Force is strong in is aware of audio description.   Joel walks us through some of the work he has done with museums to make the museums an accessible experience to the blind.   We then discuss how the initial work flows to deciding what would and would not work for audio description came about, and how audio description has changed over the past several decades. We discuss what audio description was like in the VHS and DVD days.   We then find out what Joel's goals were when he founded the Audio Description Project.   we discuss how different describing a museum tour is compared to film and TV, and how different describing a live event is compared to pre-recorded. We then discuss how amazing most Audio Described content is on the streaming services.    We then discuss Joel's book Audio Description, The Visual Made Verbal.   The conversation then moves to the networks, Congress requiring a minimum number of described hours, and the job the networks are currently doing with audio description.    It would not be an interview about audio description if we did not discuss the controversial topic of text to speech audio description. Which then turns us to the topic of when content switches from one streaming platform to another, why doesn't the audio described tracks follow with it.   We wrap up discussing methods of streaming audio described content to your phone and Spectrum Access.   To contact That Real Blind Tech Show, you can email us at ThatRealBlindTechShow@gmail.com, join our Facebook Group That Real Blind Tech Show, join us on the Twitter @BlindTechShow , or leave us an old school phone message at 929-367-1005.

Educator and advocate Joel Snyder is one of the pioneers of audio description which makes the visual verbal for people who are blind or have low vision. Just as captioning or signing gives people who are deaf or hard of hearing access to media and performing arts, audio description provides a similar service to people who are blind or have low vision.  It's a specialized skill: AD must provide a narration of what a show is depicting visually, and it must do so without stepping on dialogue or musical cues. And there is no question: the use of AD is removing barriers to culture for blind people. And Joel Snyder was there from beginning. In the podcast, Snyder takes us back to the origins of AD, the differences in providing AD for live-theater or dance as opposed to film, television, or streaming, how technology is shaping the future of AD, and his work at the Audio Description Project at the American Council of the Blind. Brian and Ed welcome Carl Richardson, Co-Chair of the Audio Description Project for the American Council of the Blind to the show. We start off discussing how Carl came to be at the ADP and what his role is  at the ADp.   We then discuss the panel that Carl moderated at this year's ACB National Conference on Audio Description. All 8 major streaming services were represented on the panel about Audio Description.   We then discuss some of Carl's favorite features of Audio Description, and the age old question with Audio Description should the describer describe it before or after it happens?   Carl and Brian then share some of their more interesting experiences with Audio Description at the movie theater. What's a movie theater? It's a big room where people used to conjugate to all watch the same movie at the same time, but that's not important right now.       Just like us, Carl is also a podcaster. Carl's podcast Picture This is all about audio description, and you can subscribe to it here.   We then discuss some of the various ways for you to get audio Described content, as there are so many ways to access this content these days.   The conversation then turns to the controversial topic of Text to Speech Audio Description. .    We also discuss what to do when your local Network affiliate breaks audio description being passed through. And if you have had it with cable make sure to read Carl's excellent article about cutting the cord which can be found here.   For any and all your questions about audio description, find out what is playing on Network TV with audio description, find out what is streaming where with audio description, and pretty much find anything about audio description in the universe please visit the Audio Description Project.   You can find the full ACB 21 Audio Description Project session that Carl moderated with the 8 major streaming services here.         To contact That Real Blind Tech Show, you can email us at ThatRealBlindTechShow@gmail.com, join our Facebook Group That Real Blind Tech Show, join us on the Twitter @BlindTechShow , or leave us an old school phone message at 929-367-1005.
