STUFF FROM THE LOFT - Dave Dye

Whatever happened to funny ads?Have clients stopped buying them?Or have agencies stopped writing them? They used to dominate the ad breaks.Humour was the first tool you reached for after being handed a brief. Why? Well, as that Poppins women says ‘A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down'.Actually…did they dominate ad breaks?Maybe I've slipped on my rose-tinted specs again?I reach for an old D&AD Annual.Randomly, I pick up 1991's.34 tv and cinema ads featured; 28 were funny.Of the 28, the most awarded were for Barclaycard and Red Rock Cider. They feel slightly odd today. They aren't ‘advertising funny', they're actually funny. In a way that I can't imagine them popping up between Bake Off?I don't know whether it's because they don't take the product very seriously? Some even make fun of it. (Imagine; making fun of the very people who pay the bills?)Or maybe getting bigger laughs than the programmes that surround you feels like bad form?Like you have aspirations above your station.I decided to do a bit of rudimentary desk research, discovering that humour is still surprisingly popular. The public love it, apparently.Much preferring it to being lectured to or bullshitted. So why the lack of funny ads?Even ad testing companies are urging us to produce more.(Yes System 1, I'm talking about you.)In an effort to better understand this humour thing, I went straight to the Chairman of the Board, the Grand Fromage, the Capo di Tutti Frutti – John Lloyd. Not only did he shoot both the campaigns above, he'd spent two decades beforehand producing the funniest stuff on tv, including Not The Nine O'clock News, Blackadder and Spitting Image. We had a lovely chat, hope you enjoy it.

Welcome back! Whilst we pride ourselves on being candid, this episode we get a little more serious as we are discussing boycotts and art washing. We're gonna focus on the boycott of SXSW (sponsored by the US Army) and Barclaycard sponsored events such as The Great Escape, Lattitude and other Live Nation/Festival Republic festivals. Many artists scheduled to play The Great Escape boycotted the festival in solidarity with Palestine, however Irish trio Kneecap didn't. Alfie and Fionnán discuss Kneecap's reasons to not boycott the festival and why they instead pointed the finger at the company behind the sponsorship, Live Nation. Whilst on the subject of Live Nation, CMAT was among artists and performers who publicly announced that they won't be playing their planned sets at Latitude because of their sponser, Barlcaycard. This episode the lads try to answer the question, do boycotts work? It's good news as this year artists have proven that they have power to make positive change. But does it come at a cost? Carers Allowance and Minimum Payments on Credit Cards

A senior MP has told Money Box that the government must take urgent action to stop carers working up thousands of pounds of debt after unwittingly receiving overpayments of Carer's Allowance. Unpaid carers, who look after a loved one full time, are entitled to nearly £82 per week in Carer's Allowance. On top of that they can earn up to £151 take home pay. But stray above that earnings limit, even by just a few pence, and they lose the full allowance. The Department for Work and Pensions is alerted on a month by month basis when this happens, but in some cases carers were not told of their mistake for years. Labour MP Stephen Timms, Chair of the Work and Pensions Select Committee says it should never have taken so long for carers to be notified. The UK's biggest credit card provider, Barclaycard, is cutting minimum payments on its card to 1% from July. It is not the only credit card provider to allow 1% minimum payments, and Barclaycard says it's made the changes to increase flexibility for customers. We look at what it means in practice for customers, in terms of how much more you'll ultimately pay in interest and how long it'll take to pay off the debt. And we return to the subject of ISAs - Individual Savings Accounts. New changes this month should mean that customers can open multiple ISAs of the same type in the same tax year, and make partial transfers of funds between them. Money Box has learnt that many of the biggest ISA providers in the UK are not yet offering customers these new freedoms, why?Presenter: Paul Lewis Reporter: Dan Whitworth Researchers: Sandra Hardial and Jo Krasner Studio Producer: Craig Henderson Editor: Beatrice Pickup(first broadcast on Saturday 27th April 2024)

He explains that traditional banks have struggled to automate lending decisions for SMEs due to regulatory constraints and manual underwriting processes. However, with the emergence of open banking and the ability to access transaction-level data, fintech companies like TRIVER can use data science to automate underwriting decisions and provide instant capital to small businesses. TRIVER's platform allows SMEs to apply for short-term financing in a few clicks, using bank data and credit bureau information to make lending decisions. The capital comes from a combination of equity and debt raised by TRIVER, and the company is also exploring partnerships with non-financial institutions to embed its technology and offer instant capital to their SME clients.  MENTIONED IN THE CONVERSATION TRIVER's Website: https://bit.ly/3OiT1RNJerome's LinkedIn profile: https://bit.ly/3ubNWUz Topics: Fintech, lending, SME, SME finance, Open Banking, Underwriting, API Companies: TRIVER, Funding Circle, Barclays, Barclaycard, Capital One ABOUT THE FINTECH BLUEPRINT

Sabine VdL talks to Pravina Ladva, Group Chief Digital and Technology Officer at Swiss Re. Pravina's career reads like a playbook for digital transformation and has answers that could redefine the way we look at insurance economics. This conversation is not just timely, it's urgently needed in a world where data is the new oil and AI is the new electricity. Pravina tells us about why Swiss Re is taking the lead with its groundbreaking Sigma Research Report from the Swiss Re Institute, what are we – as an industry – standing to gain or lose, uncovering the blueprints for the future of insurance, digital risk, and how technology could either be the ladder or the snake in this high-stakes game of digital transformation. KEY TAKEAWAYS          Today you can't turn a corner without talking about AI, tech and data. This means there's a huge amount of opportunity that's been untapped. There are a whole load of new business models that we haven't even dreamed of yet.  Digitisation is taking the analogue world and putting it into a digital system so that it can be transmitted around the world both in terms of data and conversation in a digital context as opposed to a paper context. Digitalisation is how you take that information and apply it to your business processes. Many organisations deal with some kind of legacy technology, you need to be aware of you digital environment and work within that as well as what are the opportunities to change it and where some of it is OK, because not all legacy is bad.  BEST MOMENTS ‘If you type digitisation and digitalisation the come up together on autocorrect, it shows we really have a mixed view on what they both are and mean.'‘Every one of my peers that I speak to are all facing the same challenge: There is a war for talent because we all want the same kind of people to come and do similar kinds of things.'‘No organisation on its own can achieve what it wants to achieve, you need to be very open minded about who you're partnering with, whether that's InsurTechs, large global service providers, whoever it is in the end-to-end ecosystem to really bring the value in the right way.'‘It's not about your core technology, it's about what you do with it and how you operate it that makes a difference.' ABOUT THE GUEST Pravina Ladva started her career at Abbey National/Santander, gaining experience in the financial technology sector, with responsibility for various areas from strategy to delivery and financial results. She joined Barclaycard in 2008 and held various roles including COO Digital Marketplace and CIO Barclaycard Business Solutions. The effects of weak pay bargaining power are starting to catch up with developed economy consumers. Real spending is tending to be negative. The UK British Retail Consortium survey of retail sales and Barclaycard credit card data showed falling real consumer spending. High food prices meant money had to switch to food retailers—profit-led inflation can move profits from sectors of the economy with weaker pricing power to those that can get away with margin expansion.

One thing we always remember from our childhood is our favourite teddy bear. This soft, ragged toy was our comfort and companion. As we grow up, we normally give up our childish ways, and our furry friend often ends up in storage or at a jumble sale. But that's not the case for everyone. It seems that some grown-ups continue to need their cuddly toy by their sides. One sleep survey suggested a tenth of people in the UK need a teddy bear in bed. And for some adults, soft toys remain an essential presence – they take them wherever they go. A cuddly toy can come in many forms – animals, strange shapes or just a piece of stuffed material. But it's the teddy bear in particular that seems to have an enduring appeal – it gives us a nostalgic feeling and a reminder of our younger days. Writing for the BBC, historian David Cannadine says, “Perhaps it's that bears represent the happy security of a childhood friend who never changes or lets you down.” For whatever reason, teddies appeal to both children and adults of all ages. The teddy bear is much celebrated these days, and they've become something that we don't just grow up with – people buy them as adults too. There are shops which sell only teddy bears, there are teddy bear museums in many countries, and teddy bear festivals regularly take place around the world. While our soft toys offer us a kind of comfort blanket, some experts say it's nothing to be ashamed of. It's sometimes good to let go of the constraints of adult life and be a big kid again. And research commissioned by Barclaycard in the UK found 44% of adults have purchased playthings they enjoyed as children because they bring back happy memories. Colouring books, cuddly toys and board games were top of the list. So, if you're still keeping your teddy a secret, don't worry – you're not alone!

House prices have soared in the pandemic boom – with the average home an astonishing £44,000 more expensive at £260,000, according to Nationwide. But mortgage rates are rising, the cost of living crunch is hitting hard, and the idea of a post pandemic Roaring Twenties seems very distant right now, so is a reckoning for Britain's property market on the way. On this week's podcast, Georgie Frost, Lee Boyce and Simon Lambert dive into the housing market to look at why homes are now the most expensive they have ever been when compared to wages – and what could send them even higher or tip them into decline. The team also look at the mortgage market, where the best bargain basement fixed rate deals have long vanished and rates have been rising rapidly. But while they might be going up, mortgage rates are still very cheap and the Bank of England is weighing up loosening some lending rules, so where does that take us next. Simon also has some advice for anyone whose mortgage fix is up for renewal this year. Spoiler alert: it's to start looking into a new fixed mortgage now. And a reader question – and yes, this was a genuine one – of whether taking $1million-plus in payment for a property in the Caribbean in crypto is a good idea? And finally, credit cards are dead, it's all about buy now, pay later… or is it? There's a new Avios-earning Barclaycard out and Lee's excited. Find out why by listening to the end.

You are in for a treat today! We are delighted to be speaking to Ashanti Bentil-Dhue. Ashanti is the CEO of EventMind, which provides training and consultancy for businesses looking to engage virtually with their audience. She comes from the corporate world where she was Regulatory Compliance AVP for Santander Bank, Barclaycard, and the Financial Ombudsman Service. Ashanti co-created the UK's first nation-wide anti-racism and allyship project for women in Human Resources (HR), an industry that is 83% female and white. She is also a co-founder of 100 White Allies, Diversity Ally, and Black In Events, which are consultancies that provide support for organizations to be proactively anti-racist and inclusive. In this episode, we cover three main topics. They are diversity and inclusion, starting and running your own business, and online events. You will learn a lot from our fascinating conversation with Ashanti today. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did! Ashanti Bentil-Dhue's bio: Ashanti Bentil-Dhue is Founder and CEO at EventMind, a market leader in the virtual meetings and events sector. EventMind provides training, consultancy, and delivery for businesses looking to engage virtually with their audience and community. Ashanti is currently a judge on several awards panels, including the Eventex Awards, Independent Publisher Awards, and the Virtual Event Institute Awards. She is also a co-founder of 100 White Allies, Diversity Ally, and Black In Events, consultancies that provide support to organizations who want to be proactively anti-racist and inclusive, both internally and for their service users. You can connect with her on Linkedin.  Ashanti can bring the experience she gained from five years spent as a Regulatory Compliance AVP for the likes of Santander Bank, Barclaycard, and the Financial Ombudsman Service. This experience has given Ashanti an understanding of corporate governance and challenges associated with change management and workplace culture shifts. Diversity initiatives It was during her time in the world of compliance that Ashanti began to work on diversity initiatives, and she also started to use events as a vehicle to communicate the importance of being as diverse and inclusive as possible.  Arranging events When she was working for a bank, Ashanti did not see herself as an event planner. She saw herself as the compliance consultant who also arranged events. Building communities When she decided to start her own business, Ashanti naturally gravitated towards using events to build communities, her business brand, and her personal brand.  Racism Ashanti first encountered racism when she was four years old, and she was the only black child in her class. It was the first time she realized she was different because she got treated differently. She experienced bias, micro-aggression, and being stereotyped. An event to raise awareness During an awareness month, while she was in the financial industry, Ashanti decided to put on a diversity and inclusion event for the employees. She invited local school children to participate and help raise awareness and highlight the diversity in the area within which the bank operated. It all happened very naturally for her.  HR and diversity HR is a discipline in the UK where most of the stakeholders are female and white. Those individuals often influence the processes and systems that impact how much people are getting paid and who gets hired, fired, promoted, or trained, even though they may not have lived the experience of difference or being a minority. Ashanti's mission was to help those stakeholders understand how to contribute to becoming more diverse. Diversity Diversity can be attained by hiring different people, paying everyone on equal scales, and investing in people through resources and training. Ashanti Bentil-Dhue's visibility epiphany Ashanti Bentil-Dhue realized that her consistent visibility was a way to create more diversity. That realization prompted her to create 100 White Allies, Diversity Ally, and Black In Events.  100 White Allies, Diversity Ally, and Black In Events She created those consultancies with a mission to simplify things. She wanted to make it accessible for organizations and companies to become more diverse. And highlight to people of color that there is a place for them in the events industry. Encouraging more diversity  Ashanti understood that to encourage more diversity she needed to show up consistently, be good at what she does, and add value for other people. Starting her own business Ashanti always wanted to start a business. Having learned enough from the corporate experience to add value to tech startups, she thought she would have more freedom, independence, and control of her income by starting a business of her own. Instead, she discovered that being an entrepreneur is like being an employee squared. Ashanti Bentil-Dhue's entrepreneurial challenges As Ashanti Bentil-Dhue discovered, being an entrepreneur is not easy. The challenge in owning a business is that you have to be astute, you have to make decisions under pressure, and you have to love what you do. You also need to be driven from within and able to cope with uncertainty and rejection. Monetizing your experience and skills It is vital to know how to monetize your experience and skills. Without knowing how to do that, you will struggle with starting a business. Mindset Ashanti maintains a healthy mindset with the help of several coaches and the support of a community of other entrepreneurs. She has also done a lot of work on her personal mindset.  Scaling Scaling your income is very different from scaling your business. They require different skills, resources, time, and energy. They will result in different outcomes for you as the business owner. Making more money You don't have to create or scale a company to make more money. You need to understand how to make that happen and how to manage all the elements.  Ashanti Bentil-Dhue and online events Ashanti Bentil-Dhue got into creating online events before COVID. She started with live streaming to teach people how to do various things and sell her service. Then, other companies started asking her how to live stream and sell. That was how she got into helping companies create online experiences and events to build communities.  Since COVID  Since COVID, there is much more technology available, and the rest of the world now understands the sustainability benefits and the low cost of the online launch.  Post-pandemic Online events will become a part of a digital and social strategy. They will become more informed and sophisticated than pre-COVID. What's new You can now have global insights on attendee behavior at online events. Online events can now get integrated into a marketing strategy, a recruitment strategy, or a brand-activation strategy in a way that they were not getting done readily, pre-COVID.  A global directory Ashanti has decided to launch an accessible global directory. She feels that her company is in a position to do that because they are unbiased. They will be listing every event technology company out there in one place.  Connect with Eric On LinkedIn On Facebook On Instagram On Website Connect with Ashanti On LinkedIn
