On this week's Modern Retail podcast, senior reporters Gabriela Barkho and Melissa Daniels discuss the rising challenges toy companies are facing in planning for inventory under Trump's China tariffs. As Mattel executives said in the company's quarterly earnings this week, the Barbie maker is trying to future-proof its supply chain to minimize potential price increases. In M&A news, DoorDash announced it acquired reservation platform Seven Rooms and delivery service Deliveroo, for $1.2 billion and $3.86 billion, respectively. In other acquisition news, Skechers was taken private by 3G Capital in a $9.42 billion deal, which is said to be the biggest footwear buyout to date. In this episode, Daniels also speaks with John Tabis (19:30), co-founder and chairman of flower delivery company Bouqs on how the floral industry is dealing with tariffs, with Mother's Day right around the corner. They get into the source of florals, and how Bouqs uses its internal technology to navigate high-demand times. Tabis, who is also a venture partner with M13, also got into best practices for companies with global supply chains at a moment of uncertainty.

On the show with me today is John Tabis, founder and Chairman of TheBouqs.com; an online flower retailer that delivers flowers and plants fresh from eco-friendly, sustainable farms to doorsteps nationwide. Since their founding in 2013, the company has raised $75M and delivered millions of flowers around the world. In our conversation, John and I talked extensively about three main themes. The first one is how to craft - and iterate - a story that gets people excited about your brand. In John's case, it took approximately 6 months to do this, and the story was so compelling that their first year ad spend was under $5K; yet their revenue rapidly climbed to six figures per month.  The second theme we talked about was about how to create mutually beneficial partnerships, and in John's case, these partnerships have had a significant impact on the growth of the company. And finally, we talked about how his first attempt to raise money was a total flop, what he learned, and how he was eventually able to raise a total of $75M for the company.  If you are a D2C brand founder looking to start or scale your company, make sure you have a pen ready because when you listen to this interview, you are going to uncover plenty of actionable golden nuggets! After moving on from his first startup, John started working at Disney (not the worst career move lol) and after several years he decided he wanted to get back into the startup world. John felt like he could take the floral industry by storm and he did just that. After years of steady growth and hard work, he appeared on Shark Tank (where I first saw him). He didn't get a deal on the show but he's actually one of the first people ever to get a deal years AFTER the show aired (I don't want to spoil the story so you'll just have to listen). I hope you enjoy the story of how a brand new CEO created one of the most successful floral/shark-tank companies in history!

When John Tabis, CEO of The Bouqs Company, shared with his mentor that he wanted to start his own company, his mentor said he was crazy. John decided to bet on himself and started the company anyway and the rest is history.  When the vast amount of people see the end result of successful entrepreneurship, they think it looks easy. The truth is entrepreneurship is really hard. You have to get used to not paying yourself. You toil and struggle and live in near obscurity for many years until you hit success if that ever happens. That's why it's important to have a larger mission or why. You have to ask yourself, what does my company represent? For John, flowers represent not just a product but all the special moments in life that elicit emotions such as a birth, promotion, anniversary, graduation, etc. In other words, "moments of pure emotion" and in the end, that's what The Bouqs represents and that's what drives John to build his brand. In today's world, we have grown accustomed to asking where our food comes from and is it sustainably sourced but why not with flowers? This is something that John Tabis, CEO of The Bouqs Company is trying to change. The way John sees it, if the Bouqs model works, all ships will rise.  It's the reason why Bouqs pays their farmers 25% more than competitors. They've come to realize that their customers care about the environment and the dignity of human life around the world, and so they will pay a little more for a better, fresher product if it is sustainably sourced and if the farmers follow the right labor practices. Of course, having this model is more difficult than what is the norm in the Floral Industry, so John gives us an MBA-like discussion on starting a company, raising capital, dealing with rejection, the difficulty of living life as a founder, and making the transition from founder to CEO and more.   Listen to this episode and hear John Tabis, CEO & Founder of The Bouqs Company share the inside story of building a brand. Home is where the heart is....wait there is no place like home, (add heel clicking), better yet, there is no place like home for the holidays—pick your cliché this Christmas Day and enjoy a listen from past ‘Burgers who long for home. The jagoffs interviewed West Coast comedians Joe Barnick and Andy Picarro where else but a ‘Stillers' tailgate as they people watch the Pittsburgh Steeler jersey trend. Then we phone a friend or two to chat about a booming West Coast podcast ‘Givem The Biz' that focuses on day-to-day business tips and stories thanks to Bill Harvanek and John Tabis. Plus, enjoy friend of the podcast, Dan Malarkey singing jagoff holiday tunes. Music: Dan Malarkey, friend of the podcast delights us with his jagoff versions of holiday hymns. SPONSOR: Total Sports Enterprises knows you want to shop til you drop with inventory available beyond the holidays. With public and private signings, TSE will be sure to have that perfect black and gold gift this holiday season and after. Visit the Mall at Robinson for that perfect after holiday gift or check out tseshop.com for all of your black and gold needs Question of the day: What is your favorite Pittsburgh holiday memory? 3:03 Andy/Joe: With tailgate sounds like pump up music and Here We Go Steelers chants filling the air, once ‘Burgh comedians Andy Picarro and Joe Bartnick joined the craziness and weighed in on Pittsburgh looks, the Steelers craze nationwide, and the biggest difference between Pittsburgh life and being on the West Coast. Other than being comedians with busy schedules, both co-host podcasts that are humor based with hockey talk. Check out Joe's Puck off! and Andy's Unhealthy Scratch Podcast. 17:59 Billy/John: John and Rachael get major props for comparing this high-energy typical business realm podcast to no other than the WDVE morning show. These former Rural Ridge dwellers proudly take the compliment and give us a glimpse of the fun and facts to hosting a podcast about the trials and tribulations to building and entrepreneurship anywhere, plus they share Pittsburgh must do's when returning home for the holidays. Who built igloos during a major snow storm? One of these guys reflects on that memory since it never snows in Calli. Thanks Dan Malarkey: Not sure if a CD or song release party is in the works, but since Dan refused to attend the PDP Holiday Karaoke, the jagoffs gave him a platform to perform holiday faves.
