On the show with me today is John Tabis, founder and Chairman of TheBouqs.com; an online flower retailer that delivers flowers and plants fresh from eco-friendly, sustainable farms to doorsteps nationwide. Since their founding in 2013, the company has raised $75M and delivered millions of flowers around the world. In our conversation, John and I talked extensively about three main themes. The first one is how to craft - and iterate - a story that gets people excited about your brand. In John's case, it took approximately 6 months to do this, and the story was so compelling that their first year ad spend was under $5K; yet their revenue rapidly climbed to six figures per month. The second theme we talked about was about how to create mutually beneficial partnerships, and in John's case, these partnerships have had a significant impact on the growth of the company. And finally, we talked about how his first attempt to raise money was a total flop, what he learned, and how he was eventually able to raise a total of $75M for the company. If you are a D2C brand founder looking to start or scale your company, make sure you have a pen ready because when you listen to this interview, you are going to uncover plenty of actionable golden nuggets! John Tabis has been at the top of the floral industry for quite some time now...but it wasn't always that way. After moving on from his first startup, John started working at Disney (not the worst career move lol) and after several years he decided he wanted to get back into the startup world. John felt like he could take the floral industry by storm and he did just that. After years of steady growth and hard work, he appeared on Shark Tank (where I first saw him). He didn't get a deal on the show but he's actually one of the first people ever to get a deal years AFTER the show aired (I don't want to spoil the story so you'll just have to listen). I hope you enjoy the story of how a brand new CEO created one of the most successful floral/shark-tank companies in history!
John Tabis, CEO of The Bouqs Co, believes that the consumer brands that are going to win are the ones that are where customers want them to be. That is why he thinks of Bouqs as much more than just an e-commerce company, with plans to be in retail and anywhere else a customer might want them to be. I sat down with John to talk more about the journey of Bouqs, his viewpoint on business models, and how launching a brand has changed in the last decade.

Today’s guest is a former Shark Tank competitor whose idea was rejected and business name was teased. He didn’t give up, though, seeing a real opportunity to disrupt the flower industry and has successfully done so – even having one of the Sharks return, invest in his company and have him do the floral arrangements for this Shark’s wedding. He is John Tabis, the Founder & CEO of The Bouqs Company. John believes so strongly that in order for a consumer brand to get off the ground you have to have a great story and a lot of hustle – two things he has an abundance of. Starting the company with a co-founder half-way around the world – communicating by WhatsApp, Skype and email – John built a brand with consumers at the heart of it, simplifying the flower-buying process and telling a wonderful story of where each stem come from and who are the people cultivating them. John shares many of his personal tactics that have helped him scale the business to success, his passion for big picture ideas and much more.

When John Tabis, CEO of The Bouqs Company, shared with his mentor that he wanted to start his own company, his mentor said he was crazy. John decided to bet on himself and started the company anyway and the rest is history. When the vast amount of people see the end result of successful entrepreneurship, they think it looks easy. The truth is entrepreneurship is really hard. You have to get used to not paying yourself. You toil and struggle and live in near obscurity for many years until you hit success if that ever happens. That's why it's important to have a larger mission or why. You have to ask yourself, what does my company represent? For John, flowers represent not just a product but all the special moments in life that elicit emotions such as a birth, promotion, anniversary, graduation, etc. In other words, "moments of pure emotion" and in the end, that's what The Bouqs represents and that's what drives John to build his brand. Listen to this episode and hear John Tabis, CEO & Founder of The Bouqs Company shares his MBA-like entrepreneurial advice and his story of building a brand. I write about all of our podcast! In today's world, we have grown accustomed to asking where our food comes from and is it sustainably sourced but why not with flowers? This is something that John Tabis, CEO of The Bouqs Company is trying to change. The way John sees it, if the Bouqs model works, all ships will rise. It's the reason why Bouqs pays their farmers 25% more than competitors. They've come to realize that their customers care about the environment and the dignity of human life around the world, and so they will pay a little more for a better, fresher product if it is sustainably sourced and if the farmers follow the right labor practices. Of course, having this model is more difficult than what is the norm in the Floral Industry, so John gives us an MBA-like discussion on starting a company, raising capital, dealing with rejection, the difficulty of living life as a founder, and making the transition from founder to CEO and more. Listen to this episode and hear John Tabis, CEO & Founder of The Bouqs Company share the inside story of building a brand. I write about all of our podcast!
