Globular clusters are the oldest members of the galaxy. They’re tight balls of hundreds of thousands of stars, most of which were born when the universe was no more than a couple of billion years old. Their most-massive stars have long since died. And most of the stars that remain are cool and faint. So a globular tends to be fairly quiet and calm. But that doesn’t mean that things don’t change. Consider Messier 13. It’s in Hercules, which is high in the east at nightfall. Under dark skies, the cluster is just visible to the unaided eye, looking like a faint, fuzzy star. The cluster is about 25,000 light-years away, and it contains up to half a million stars. But the stars at the edge of the cluster aren’t held as tightly as those in the middle. So the gravity of the rest of the galaxy can pull some of them away. In fact, astronomers have identified a few dozen stars that appear to be escapees from M13. But the cluster also can grab stars from the space around it. One especially young star probably became a member of the cluster that way. And stars inside the cluster can change. Some of them merge, forming bright, blue stars that look much younger. And stars die. M13’s brightest member is dying right now. It’s about as massive as the Sun, but it’s puffed up to dozens of times the Sun’s diameter. Soon, it’ll blow away its outer layers, leaving only its tiny, dead core – one more change in an ancient family of stars. Script by Damond Benningfield

On this week's Modern Retail podcast, senior reporters Gabriela Barkho and Melissa Daniels discuss the rising challenges toy companies are facing in planning for inventory under Trump's China tariffs. As Mattel executives said in the company's quarterly earnings this week, the Barbie maker is trying to future-proof its supply chain to minimize potential price increases. In M&A news, DoorDash announced it acquired reservation platform Seven Rooms and delivery service Deliveroo, for $1.2 billion and $3.86 billion, respectively. In other acquisition news, Skechers was taken private by 3G Capital in a $9.42 billion deal, which is said to be the biggest footwear buyout to date. In this episode, Daniels also speaks with John Tabis (19:30), co-founder and chairman of flower delivery company Bouqs on how the floral industry is dealing with tariffs, with Mother's Day right around the corner. They get into the source of florals, and how Bouqs uses its internal technology to navigate high-demand times. Tabis, who is also a venture partner with M13, also got into best practices for companies with global supply chains at a moment of uncertainty.

The first intentional message to other civilizations was beamed into the galaxy 50 years ago tomorrow. There wasn’t much to it – just 1,679 bits of data. When properly decoded, the message yields a picture – stick-figure outlines of a person and the message’s planet of origin, for example. The image also features the facility that beamed it into space: the giant Arecibo radio telescope, which collapsed a few years ago. The Arecibo message was conceived by Frank Drake. He was a pioneer in SETI – the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. He’d conducted the first search for radio signals just 15 years earlier. One of his collaborators was celebrity astronomer Carl Sagan. The message was intended primarily as a publicity stunt. Arecibo had just received a major upgrade, and astronomers wanted to show it off. So the message was transmitted just once – it wasn’t repeated. Other messages have followed, from radio telescopes around the world. Today, though, scientists and others are debating the wisdom of alerting the rest of the galaxy to our presence. They wonder whether messages to the stars might bring an unpleasant response. The target for the Arecibo message was M13, a giant star cluster in Hercules. It’s in the west-northwest at nightfall, and it’s an easy target for binoculars or a small telescope. But it’s so far away that the message won’t get there for another 25,000 years. Today's guest is Suzanne Kianpour, an international journalist who seeks a genuine place for women in reporting and negotiating from conflict zones around the world. From her start at Emory University to the BBC, Suzanne understood that more young women needed to be encouraged and supported in journalism reporting, and that women can play a vital role in both informing people and, simultaneously, helping to offer differing perspectives on defusing international conflicts. Suzanne has covered issues ranging from the "Mueller Report" on Donald Trump's alleged ties to the Russian authorities, to the current conflicts in the Middle East. In this episode with Liss and Kristi, she also navigates the balance between personal and professional ambitions, particularly for women in journalism. Drawing inspiration from pioneering journalists like Barbara Walters and Savannah Guthrie, we discuss the pressures and challenges women face in balancing career aspirations with personal life goals. For aspiring Journalism and Reporting students - it's a huge advantage to speak a foreign language (in Suzanne's case, Farsi and others) or to have studied Economics ,or a related practical social science. Suzanne's website:- https://www.helmettoheels.com/p/about-helmet-to-heelsSTORIES:-00:00 - Start00:24 - Kristi's social networking capabilities00:39 - Introducing Suzanne from Cyprus and "Helmets Appeals"02:10 - "Who said I had a stroke?"02:26 - When Suzanne came to the ranch - "That Girl"03:26 - Inspiring young female journalists05:26 - Suzanne's career08:10 - Delivering Savannah Guthrie's mail at NBC 08:45 - "Hey, you're Persian"09:30 - Sinclair is taking Russian10:33 - Mike Pompeo comes to talk at Texas A&M13:10 - "You register them for camp when they come out of utero"16:20 - Emory "Southern Values" and "Melting Pot"19:00 - Barbara Walters' memoir21:25 - I was raised by other people22:34 - "You guys are good journalists"26:59 - Supportive Relationships and Ironies 28:10 - RBG documentary28:40 - "You had to marry a rich man"29:57 - The ISIS massacre in Northern Iraq30:33 - No role for women in these conflicts zones31:44 -  Women in Diplomatic Negotiations34:11 - Empowering Voices for Change40:08 - Power Summit Message 42:02 - Forgiving Donald Trump42:49 - Holding memories

Episode 343 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Jonathan Corbin, Co-Founder & CEO of Maven AGI and our first sponsored podcast episode! Yes, please welcome Silicon Valley Bank (more info about SVB below) as a supporter of The VentureFizz Podcast. Any time I see a funding announcement for a new company, I get excited, as I'm an optimist and I hope that every company will scale and reach great milestones… but when I saw the news about Maven and how they are using Generative AI for enterprise customer experience… it was different… it was a no-brainer moment and I'm calling it now… this is going to be an anchor company in the Boston tech scene. Why? The team. They have a world-class team from HubSpot, Google, Meta, Amazon, and Stripe. Take Jonathan for example. He was the Global VP of Customer Success & Strategy at HubSpot where he led a team that was responsible for over 200,000 customers. Prior, he held leadership roles with major tech companies like Sprinklr, Marketo, Adobe, and others. He is one example of a team that is uniquely qualified to solve this problem. The problem. The use case for Generative AI at Maven just makes a world of sense and they already have early customers with amazing results which he gets into in during our discussion. Backing. In May, Maven announced that it had raised $28 million from investors Lux Capital, M13, E14 Fund, Mentors Fund and 786 Ventures, with participation from executives from OpenAI, Google, HubSpot, and Stripe. Maven is absolutely a company to keep an eye on and one of the key companies that are part of the next wave in the Boston tech scene. Oh... and they are hiring - you can check out their jobs here. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * What the fundraising process looked like for Maven. * Jonathan's background story and a journey through his career path, plus his early entrepreneurial roots as a kid. * How he learned to lead a global organization of over 1,000 team members at HubSpot. * What led Jonathan and his two co-founders Eugene Mann and Sami Shalabi down the path of starting Maven. * All the details about Maven and the velocity they have been operating under in terms of building the platform and getting early customer adoption. * Advice for startups on building out a customer success function. * The vibe for the AI startup community in the Boston tech scene. * And so much more. Episode Sponsor: As a longtime champion of the local startup ecosystem, Silicon Valley Bank supports innovative companies with the solutions and financing they need through every stage of growth. In our region of the Milky Way Galaxy, the stars are a long way apart. The Sun's nearest neighbor is more than four light-years away — 25 trillion miles. In the core of a globular cluster, though, the stars are packed hundreds of times more densely. That means the stars are only a few light-months apart, or even light-weeks — much closer than in our own neighborhood. One of the most prominent globular clusters is in Hercules, the strongman. M13 — the Hercules Cluster — is perhaps 25,000 light-years away. It contains several hundred thousand stars. M13 and the other globular clusters are thought to be the oldest inhabitants of the Milky Way. So most of the stars in the cluster are more than 10 billion years old — more than twice the age of the Sun. Such stars are fainter, redder, and less massive than the Sun. From a planet near the cluster's middle, you'd see a whole bunch of stars in the night sky, and almost all of them would be yellow, orange, or red — remnants of the early galaxy. M13 is low in the northeast at nightfall. It's along the line that connects the top two stars in the “Keystone” — a lopsided square of stars that outlines the strongman's torso. Under clear, dark skies, the cluster looks like a dim fuzzball. It's easier to see if you look out of the corner of your eye. It's an easy target for binoculars — the glow of an ancient family of stars. Script by Damond Benningfield

Welcome to Observing With Webb, where a high school astronomy teacher tells you what you're looking at, why it's so cool, and what you should check out later this month…at night.  Venus shines bright at sunset all month, with Mars nearby, while Saturn, Jupiter, and even Mercury shine in the mornings, and the Beehive Cluster gets two wandering guests, all in the solstice month of June. 21st – Summer Solstice – This is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.     Spring Constellations: Big Dipper, Boötes, Virgo, Corona Borealis, Hercules – Gaze almost vertically as you face the NW, and you'll easily find the Big Dipper: seven very bright stars that form a saucepan shape. Now if you take the handle of the Dipper, follow its curve to the next bright star you see, about 20˚ away, which is Arcturus. “Follow the arc to Arcturus.” That's the brightest star in Boötes, which looks like a kite.    Take that same curve, and follow it about another 20˚ to “South to Spica”, the brightest star in Virgo, one of my favorite constellations, since it reminds me of the Dickinson Mermaid.  Now go back to Boötes, and just to the left of Boötes are seven stars that form the northern crown Corona Borealis, which looks more like a small bowl or a “C” in the sky.    Continue a little further to the left and you'll find the keystone asterism which is part of the constellation Hercules. Extra Challenge! Look for M13, the Hercules Cluster in between two of Hercules' “keystone” stars.  It known as the best globular cluster in the northern skies.  It will be a fuzzy spot in binoculars and will be even cooler through a telescope.   We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs.  Just visit: https://www.patreon.com/365DaysOfAstronomy and donate as much as you can! Globular star clusters are like skyscrapers in the suburbs. They're densely populated structures surrounded by a lot of open space. Most of them are well outside the Milky Way's disk. They're tight balls of hundreds of thousands of stars, so they're easy to spot. An example is Messier 13, in the constellation Hercules. It climbs into view in the northeast by 9 or 10 p.m. Under dark skies, it looks like a faint smudge of light. Binoculars enhance the view. M13 is about 25,000 light-years away. It contains several hundred thousand stars, packed into a ball about 150 light-years across. Most of its stars are right in the middle. They're packed more than a hundred times tighter than the stars in our own galactic neighborhood. As a result, many more bright stars would speckle the skies of any planets in that region. Most of those stars would look faint, and yellow or orange. That's because M13's original big, bright, blue stars have long since expired. The survivors are less massive than the Sun, and a good bit older. Such stars look redder and fainter than the Sun. A few stars have passed beyond the prime of life, so they've puffed up and gotten extremely bright. They'll soon lose their outer layers, though, leaving only their hot but dead cores, known as white dwarfs. A few stars in M13 have merged. That's made them hotter, brighter, and bluer — the stand-out residents of a galactic skyscraper.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

Introduction: Welcome to Five & Thrive: a weekly podcast highlighting the Southeast's most interesting news, entrepreneurs, and information of the week, all under 5 minutes.  My name is Jon Birdsong and I'm with Atlanta Ventures.  Beta Product of the Week: Former Atlanta Ventures intern and Georgia Tech student, Aidan Pratt has a new and fun beta product called PinPoint. Here is how it works. You go to pinpoint.city and login with your Twitter account. After authorizing the app, you're taken to a picture of the world and you immediately see where everyone you follow is located in the country or world. Now this data is not real time, it only records the static location from your Twitter Bio. It is cool to see where everyone who has publicly stated the city they live in, especially post-covid. If you're looking for a fun, free rabbit hole to dive down for 15-30 minutes check out this neat product from Georgia Tech undergrad.  Events of the Week: This week we caught up with Joe Colopy of Bronto Software fame which sold to NetSuite in 2015. Today Joe and his team started Jurassic Capital and he also helps run GrepBeat - which is a Triangle specific publication on all things startup. The dates for the 2nd Grep-a-palooza have been set and it is June 1st at the Durham Convention Center. Put that one on your schedule for the summer now.    Raise of the Week: This week some strong national news occurred from Fortune announcing Atlanta-based Parable which raised $2.75M co-led by M13 and and Break Tail Ventures. Brian Davis is the Co-CEO and started the company nearly 2 years ago. Parable provides daily nutrients your brain needs in one scoop. The product is called Daily and comprises of eight active ingredients; including green tea extract, ginseng, lemon balm, and a few I won't attempt pronouncing. Check their link out in the show notes.  Also, out of Richmond, Virginia the HopDrive team raised an $8M round led by Cox Automotive as well as ACERTUS and Ally with existing investors, Overline participating as well. HopDrive provides short distance vehicle delivery solutions for automotive dealerships, independent service centers, and fleet management companies. Congrats to Nick Mottas and Rob Newton of Richmond on the raise.     Podcast of the Week: This isn't some form of inception promoting content other content we do but we did just launch a new Atlanta Story Podcast with a company that is hiring, more in the next clip. Lemon Perfect is the name of the business and it's a CPG company that sells healthy lemon water and is the 4th fastest growing water brand in the country. If you don't listen to the podcast, here are the main three takeaways: Yanni Hufnagel is the CEO and started the business after spending the first nearly 20 years of his career as basketball coach: point 1, it's never too late to pivot your career. When identifying factories to produce his product, found a company with two partners in the plant. Those partners ended up splitting up but Yanni built the relationship with the one who still produces the product today: point 2, just like in basketball or any sports, business is a game of inches and you need the ball to bounce your way to be successful. Make sure to put yourself in a position for the ball to bounce one way or another and keep at it. When I asked him what is in store for the future of Lemon Perfect, his answer was simple: “wake up and win tomorrow.” Spoken like a true coach. Keep it simple and let's all win today.   Companies Worth Applying To:  Just yesterday, I ran into Joshua Silver the CEO of Rainforest and he has been hiring like crazy. We've covered them a few episodes ago after their raise. Josh is currently looking for a zero to one marketer and ideally someone who has already been in fintech. We put their company link in the bio.  Also, Lemon Perfect's team of 79 is also hiring. They are looking for several marketing specialists to bring their drink in the hands of more consumers.   Annnnd that is five minutes!
