How far can reality TV go to engage viewers? Back in the 1990s, a hugely popular variety show in Japan featured a 22-year-old aspiring comedian having to survive solely on magazine sweepstakes, alone and naked in a small room for 15 months. His ordeal was recently revived in the British documentary film "The Contestant". In this edition, Nasubi reflects on the disturbing TV show and shares his thoughts on today's social media craze, with FRANCE 24's Yuka Royer.

Welcome to the third episode of our Seven Deadly Sins series! This time, Fraser takes on Sloth—the sin of laziness, idleness, and doing the bare minimum. But don't be fooled—this episode is anything but dull!Fraser shares the bizarre and hilarious story of Nasubi, a Japanese reality TV star who found himself in one of the most unique (and borderline cruel) social experiments ever televised. Stranded in an empty apartment with no clothes, no food, and nothing but a stack of magazines, Nasubi was tasked with surviving by entering sweepstakes—living only off what he could win. What followed was a year-long saga of boredom, bizarre twists, and unlikely perseverance, all caught on camera.Through this wild tale, Fraser explores how the sin of Sloth isn't just about being lazy—it can also highlight how society turns idleness into entertainment. Packed with humour, insight, and plenty of “did that really happen?!” moments, this episode is a must-listen!#TheMostDangerousPodcast #SevenDeadlySins #Sloth #Nasubi Hosted on Acast. It's The Truman Show meets Naked and Afraid meets Extreme Couponing? We welcome documentary director Clair Titley and the prizewinning participant himself, Nasubi, to talk about their stranger than fiction look at The Contestant. More about The Contestant: This true story of a Japanese reality TV star left naked in a room for more than a year, tasked with filling out magazine sweepstakes to earn food and clothing, prompts innumerable questions about our culture of oversharing. Before the onslaught of reality television in the West, there was an ominous harbinger in Japan of what was to come in our oversharing-obsessed culture. The Contestant traces the experience of aspiring comedian Tomoaki Hamatsu, nicknamed Nasubi, who unwittingly became an extreme case study. In 1998, Nasubi thought he was attending an audition when a successful Japanese TV producer, Toshio Tsuchiya, enlisted him to take part in a challenge. Tsuchiya led Nasubi into a room, ordered him to strip naked and left him with a stack of magazines. Nasubi's task was to fill out contest coupons in order to win what he needed to survive — food, clothing, appliances, etc. — until he reached the prize goal of one million yen. Although Nasubi could have left at any time, he stayed for months with a fierce determination to complete his mission. He was cut off from all contact with his family and the world except for occasional interactions with Tsuchiya. What Nasubi didn't realize was that his experiences were being broadcast to over 15 million people in a TV show called Denpa Shonen: A Life in Prizes. Without his knowledge or consent, Nasubi became the most famous television personality in Japan. The Contestant is streaming now on Hulu. Gladiators in the Colosseum. Sideshow performers. Reality television. We've always loved to gawk at the misery or majesty of others. But this week, we ask the question: What's it like when the tables are turned and all eyes are on you? Prologue: Ira talks to Joel Gold, a psychologist and author, about a strangely common delusion known as the "Truman Show Delusion," in which patients believe that they are being filmed, 24/7, for a national reality television program. (6 minutes)Act One: Producer Stephanie Foo speaks to Nasubi, a Japanese comedian who, in the 90s, just wanted a little bit of fame. So he was thrilled when he won an opportunity to have his own segment on a Japanese reality TV show. Until he found out the premise: he had to sit in an empty apartment with no food, clothes or contact with the outside world, enter sweepstakes from magazines… and hope that he won enough sustenance to survive. (23 minutes)Act Two: Writer Ariel Sabar tells the story of Roger Barker, a psychologist who believed that humans should be studied outside the lab. So Barker dispatched an army of graduate students to follow the children of Oskaloosa, Kansas, and write down every single thing they did. Sabar wrote a book - a Kindle Single - about Roger Barker, called "The Outsider." (8 1/2 minutes)Act Three: Charlie Brill and Mitzi McCall were a comedy duo back in the mid-1960s, playing clubs around Los Angeles, when their agent called to tell them he'd landed them the gig of a lifetime: They were going to be on The Ed Sullivan Show. The only problem was that their performance was a total fiasco, for a bunch of reasons, including one they never saw coming. David Segal reports. What do you do on your downtime at work? Mallory discovers teensy weensy islands in the South Pacific. Tonight, Mallory tells us about one of those islands, specifically Pitcairn Island. It has a population of less than 50 people and by all accounts the people seem happy and friendly. The island is beautiful and the people of Pitcairn are eager to grow their population and become completely self sufficient. But the population is dwindling. Not because of how isolated they are, but because of a horrible history full of disgusting secrets. (Trigger warning: sexual abuse) Then Ashley dives deep into the world of reality TV. Specifically the story of Tomoaki Hamatsu (or Nasubi - his stage name). In 1998, Nasubi, a 22 year old aspiring comedian auditioned for a mysterious reality show. As luck would have it, he would be the star! But little did he know, he would be isolated, starved, and manipulated for over a year. The show was a hit - which leads us to the question - what does this say about us as a species?

Would you believe me if I told that in 1998, a real Japanese man would be tricked into a survival-horror version of the 'Truman Show' in real life? Would you then believe me that this broadcast got upwards of 17 million viewers at a time, and that it was all broadcast and sold under the genre of "comedy"? Well believe it or not, it happened, and this week on Black Hoodie Alchemy I'm explaining the entire harrowing experience of Tomoaki Hamatsu on this gameshow -- the man forever dubbed now as "Nasubi" (which means "eggplant" in Japanese). Through gameshow producers dangling the carrots of fame, glory, and honor in the name a burgeoning comedy career for Nasubi, this man became a contestant of a show that saw him locked naked in a room with nothing but a pillow, a radio, pencils, and index cards to write on in order to enter in as many sweepstakes as he wanted. Nasubi would have to do this -- surviving off of only what he won through the sweepstakes and with no other contact with the outside world -- until he won $10,000 worth of sweepstakes prizes. Nasubi would have to endure these conditions for over a year, with more twists and turns than you could imagine! How was all of this legal, how did this man survive this full-on existential nightmare, and what is he doing now? All this and more on this week's Black Hoodie Alchemy! I hope you dig it.
