Episode 22: Pastor Jordan R. N. Brown & The Holy Bible

The Book Leads: Impactful Books For Life & Leadership

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 11, 2022 93:45

For this episode, the second of my discussions covering The Bible, Pastor Brown talks about the real messages in this sacred text, those that seem to get lost and even hijacked (my word) in the chatter and noise of today's society. Through his early ties to Christianity via his father, who is also a Pastor, and his own work with youth, running a faith-based non-profit, teaching as a professor, and co-hosting his own podcast, Jordan has grown and enhanced his engagement and study of society and community, seeking out conversations to understand what it is people might need. Because he is realistic, understanding that a growing number of people is turning away from religion and that his own faith has been misinterpreted and misunderstood, he seeks to help people find its true meaning and applicability to all our lives, meeting people where they are. Some highlights from this episode: -- What TGI Friday's (yes, the restaurant) has to do with empowering the effectiveness of Jordan's pastoral duties. -- That it's okay to wrestle with that in which we believe. We shouldn't pledge blindly to a belief without questioning for our own understanding. Faith in anything doesn't have to be all or nothing, perfectly tied up and neat. Instead, it mimics life, which is about chaos and struggle. -- I realize how much of my own leadership foundation is built from my own exposure to the stories in The Bible when I was a child. The Bible was also covered in Episode 19 of the The Book Leads with Karen Hinds, but each of these conversations is just as powerful, with my partners in conversation providing different voices and vantage points, experiences and stories when it comes to how the book has impacted their understanding of our tumultuous human lives. The MAIN QUESTION that underlies my conversation with Jordan is, Are you willing to learn for yourself what others have already claimed to master, to take on and understand for yourself that which can be a point of contention and disagreement? Jordan's Bio: Jordan Brown is the Lead Pastor of [OV]Church in Norfolk, VA. He's been in this position since October, and was previously the director of the Urban Renewal Center, a faith based social justice non-profit. In addition to this, he's a professor at Wave Leadership College in Virginia Beach as well as co-host of the I-2-I Podcast (short for Inspired to Inspire). He's resides in Suffolk, VA where he lives with his wife, Michón and their dog, Little Bear the Muppet. He is glad to serve as a confrontational peace maker and conversationalist. Listeners call in to talk about what they feel unsure about in this age of certainty and political polarization. @BrianLehrer re: ambivalence, on the one hand, I don't think China has the best humanitarian track record, but on the other hand, ours isn't much better (our for-profit prison systems, refugee detention), nor are any of the countries WE support (Saudi Arabia is a great example) — Jordan R (@falkelord) February 7, 2022 @BrianLehrer I'm ambivalent over the Whoopi Goldberg/Holocaust issue. I don't agree with her BUT the collective anger seems misplaced since the conversation over banning books and/or teaching the Holocaust & slavery in 14 states has been ignored — Fred Howard (@bushwickbaby) February 7, 2022 @BrianLehrer re: the ambivalence segment, I am very torn about if or how to engage with the Olympics. The athletes have worked so hard for the opportunity to compete, and I want to support them, but supporting the IOC, China, and sponsors' transgressions also feels bad. — audragetsatyou (@audragetsatyou) February 7, 2022 I'm becoming more ambivalent on masks. I always wear a mask in public indoor spaces, but I'm torn about whether people should take their own risks. If my elderly parent is 3x vaxed &wears a mask, should I still feel anxiety when I see a indoor unmasked person @BrianLehrer — JG (@ResisterVoter) February 7, 2022 Masks for kids in elementary schools Many are unvaxxed. Some are vulnerable. Staff can be vulnerable. Yet masks ar detrimental to social, emotional, and academic development. — Sha Sha (@francescatututu) February 7, 2022 @BrianLehrer I am ambivalent about IDs to vote. I'm always surprised that I don't have to show one to vote but I don't want to disenfranchise but I think it might take teeth out of fraud complaints. — Ben Abelman (@benabelman) February 7, 2022

Jordan is a professional software engineer consultant and for the last few years, lived and worked in the San Fransisco bay area, designing and developing software for a range of clients in Silicon Valley. He decided to flip the script, sell all his stuff to live and work full time remote with no home base. I have long admired Jordan's unique perspective on the world, Mostly because it causes me to challenge my viewpoint. (great traits I tend to look for in friend) We talk about this and so much more in our almost 2-hour conversation together. The biggest thing to look at in this conversation is this, notice how Jordan says things like, “I’m not sure if a agree with this but I am trying this notion on s a possible viewpoint...” Or, “let's just say [this notion or believe] is true…now let’s follow this logic”. It's his ability to try on a new concept to see if it could add value or understanding. He allows himself to be "wrong" in order to discover more clarification. In further conversation with him, he said: "I think that I don't identify myself as 'I know the Truth' but rather 'I am one who can uncover truth'". Brain Jordan of Jordan R & D, and TechPort Intern, Tabitha Dunn, join Paul and I as we jump into the parallels of creativity and the creative "spark." We find ourselves asking, "what is the mother of invention," or rather the "Mothers of Invention?" This question takes us on a path that lands on how creativity taps us into the universal connection or consciousness and how necessary that actually is in our lives. Also, How important is devotion on the journey to do something different? How important is failure? It certainly would be a stroke of luck to find success without failure, and quite possibly a whole load of failure. But it seems pretty clear that we all agree that creativity and passion--your creativity, passion, and contribution to life IS IMPORTANT! Practical Terrorism Prevention: Reexamining U.S. National Approaches to Addressing the Threat of Ideologically Motivated Violence (RAND Corporation, 2019), examines past countering-violent-extremism (CVE) efforts, evaluates Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and interagency efforts to respond to ideological radicalization to violence, and recommends strengthening programs focused on non-law enforcement means to address the threat of terrorism. The authors (Brian A. Jackson, Ashley L. Rhoades, Jordan R. Reimer, Natasha Lander, Katherine Costello, and Sina Beaghley) found that current terrorism prevention capabilities are relatively limited. Most initiatives are implemented locally or outside government, and only a subset receive federal support. Among interviewees in law enforcement, government, and some community organizations, there is a perceived need for a variety of federal efforts to help strengthen and broaden local and nongovernmental capacity. However, doing so will be challenging, since concerns about past counterterrorism and CVE efforts have significantly damaged trust in some communities. As a result, terrorism prevention policy and programs will need to focus on building trust locally, and designing programs and federal activities to maintain that trust over time. This week, we bring back our #AMA segment and answer your questions, as received through our Facebook community page. If you're not already a member, you can join at https://passionatedj.com/community. This is the fourth time we've done this segment, and we really had a great selection of questions to choose from. Here's what we answer in this episode: Vinyl. We are seeing a strong return of the physical support for the music. For a beginner DJ, is it still worth it? Does it still represent an added value from the point of view of club managers, people, fans, etc. (Giacomo R.) Specifically for Tony, how do you figure out what you're willing to pay when booking talent? I've heard rough numbers like 50% of expected ticket sales, any insight to guidelines such as that would be appreciated! (Jackson F.) I wanna hear your views on the new Akai Force. Game changer? Can I trash my Mac, yet? (Jordan R.) Production of this show. Is there a profit in there, or is it completely a labor of love? What makes you do what you do? How much would you say you have invested into the show since day one? (Corey S.) I played live for over 6 hours this weekend, and there were multiple intoxicated dancers that were banging things and making so much noise that I couldn't hear in my headphones, monitor, or even the PA to correct the pitch during mixing. What do other DJs do when things like this are happening? (Matthew M.) I'm looking for advice on how to organize my music on USB stick without using playlists, rekordbox, iTunes or anything else... just by using folders and subfolders. (Eren K.) Where's the line between being pushy and asking for help? As a newer DJ, I've been asking friends and fellow DJs to listen to mixes. Just want to revisit some best practices for breaking in to the scene to get behind the decks in the club. (Adam C.) What do you do when you hit a long bridge? Continue working on your beat matching and EQ? Take a break? Look forward to possible tracks down the line? I occasionally find myself frustrated just waiting for the track to kick back in. (Scott C.) What was the longest set you prepared for? How do you prepare for sets? (Christopher L.) When do you upgrade your gear? When it breaks? When a new version comes out? What motivates you? Being forced or enticed? (B-Funk) How long do we plan on being DJs?
