An insured filed a claim for a lost diamond earring. The stud and its match were scheduled as 1.00 Carat each, “I” color and SI clarity, for $8,000. Her insurer asked Gemcor create a match. When we received the mate, we ran our standard test and found something unexpected: the diamond wasn't natural. It was lab-grown. In the years since its purchase, the replacement cost for lab-grown diamonds has plummeted. But the insured believed they were both natural, and wants a natural replacement.   Notable Timestamps [ 00:58 ] - A client filed a claim for a lost diamond earring, but the mate, initially thought to be natural and scheduled for $8,000, was unexpectedly discovered to be lab-grown, with its replacement cost having plummeted. [ 01:28 ] - Lab-grown diamonds are chemically and physically identical to natural diamonds, grown from a seed crystal in a lab, and only very high-quality equipment can differentiate them. [ 02:08 ] - The main difference for lab-grown diamonds is value, as they are not rare. Natural diamonds take millions of years, while lab-grown are created in 30 days, making them significantly less expensive. [ 06:12 ] - An insured's original appraisal correctly stated "lab grown," but underwriting dropped this crucial detail from the policy, as the industry lacked awareness of its importance years ago. [ 10:10 ] - If an insurance company pays for a pair and later discovers the remaining earring is lab-grown, salvage recovery is minimal, as there's no market to resell them when new ones can be easily manufactured. [ 11:27 ] - A lab-grown diamond pair purchased for $8,000 in 2001 (or $2,000 two years ago) can now be replaced by the original jeweler for $1,000 or less due to plummeting market prices. [ 14:04 ] - The purpose of insurance is to make the insured whole by replacing the item with like kind and quality, not necessarily the original dollar amount, which is impactful when lab-grown prices change quickly. Do you have to come close to death to invent a groundbreaking medical device? That's certainly not something we would wish upon every medtech entrepreneur. But it is the story of Shavini Fernando and the connected earring OxiWear that she developed. Shavini lives with Eisenmenger syndrome, a condition where the two ventricles of her heart communicate. This condition dramatically increases the pressure in her pulmonary vasculature and severely limits the oxygen carried in her blood. It's a critical situation that has already caused her four cardiac arrests and three strokes, all of which she has survived. Constantly reliant on supplemental oxygen to live, she dreamed of a way to measure her oxygen levels in real time while staying active. This would allow her to anticipate sudden variations in the future and the life-threatening risks they bring. And she made that dream come true by creating the first connected earring, FDA-certified, capable of measuring blood oxygen saturation in real time. All in a discreet format, lighter than an AirPod, and designed for use during everyday activities, including sports. In many ways, this innovation has transformed her own life, as well as those of hundreds of patients who have benefited from it so far. In this episode, we revisit her story as a patient and survivor. Shavini opens up about the immense challenges of living with Eisenmenger syndrome and developing OxiWear, sharing her vision for this technology and the potential it holds for the future of cardiorespiratory monitoring. Banks were the turn around story with CBA up % and the Big Bank Basket up to $248.66 (1.2%). REITs also in demand as GMG bounced 2.7% and SCG up 1.8%. Financials services still under some pressure, IFT down 1.4% and ASX off 3.0%. Industrials generally firmed, WES up 1.3% and WOW and COL better; Retail was back in demand, as retail sales numbers were released, JBH up 1.1% and PMV up 0.9%. Tech was better, WTC up 2.3% and XRO up 1.2% with ORG rallying 2.7% on news from Earring power station. JHX remained under pressure as the recent acquisition plan continues to spur selling, down 3.9%. Resources were back in demand, BHP bouncing % and FMG up %. Gold miners limped higher, NEM up 1.1% and RMS better by 0.8%. EVN doing well up 1.7%. PLS crumbled 5.5% again as shorts took control, MIN fell 0.8% and LTR down 6.4%.  Oil and gas positive as crude rose, WDS up 1.7% and STO up 1.7%. Uranium under pressure again. In corporate news, AVJ gained 8.3% as it agreed terms with AVID. Looks like Virgin is heading for a June listing. On the economic front, retail sales rose 0.2% slightly below forecasts.
