Mitsuharu Misawa. Toshiaki Kawada. Kenta Kobashi. Akira Taue. These were All Japan's “Big Four” during of the 1990s, the four most influential players of the decade. English-speaking fans in 2021 have more and more often been referring to these four wrestlers as AJPW's “Four Pillars of Heaven,” and recently, the term “four pillars” has turned into hip new short-hand for “top four wrestlers.” What's ironic about this is that “Four Pillars of Heaven” is actually a mistranslation of the word “shitennō” (四天王). In colloquial Japanese, they're often referred to as the shitennō of AJPW. Shitennou is a common Japanese phrase to describe the top four people, places or things within a set context. In modern English, we often share our “Mt. Rushmores” of wrestlers, the top four of (fill in the blank); “shitennō” in Japanese works the same way. So, the phrase “Four Pillars of Heaven,” which is now an accepted addition to the pro wrestling lexicon, was actually born out of a mistranslation and misinterpretation of the the original kanji characters. Fumi Saito & Justin Knipper break this down in more detail while giving the overarching backstory behind Misawa, Kawada, Kobashi and Taue. They also discuss at length how important Stan Hansen was during this period, and how important his relationships with each AJPW shittenō were. We are replaying a previous podcast by Justin Knipper and Fumi Saito on Antonio Inoki. This is part three of a five part series on Inoki that was recorded early in 2022. There is a link to all five episodes after Justin's original summary. In the next installment of their profile series on Antonio Inoki, Fumi Saito and Justin Knipper continued covering Inoki's full in-ring career, this time focusing on years 1974–1980. After Inoki's (and Seiji Sakaguchi's) NJPW and Giant Baba's AJPW established deals with television channels, the rivalry between the two companies began heating up. Fumi and Justin talked about the hot time it was for pro wrestling Japan during the mid-'70s, the influence of television and print media at the time. The two also went over Inoki's inventive and bloody December 1974 vs. IWA champion Strong Kobayashi, Inoki's year-long feud with Tiger Jeet Singh, his famous hour-long bout with Karl Gotch-trainee Billy Robinson, and his series of matches with Andre the Giant. They also talked about Vince McMahon Sr.'s involvement with and appearances for NJPW at around this time, which subsequently led to NJPW and the WWWF's 11-year working relationship. The partnership would also lead to Inoki's international breakout bout against Muhammed Ali in what many would call the world's first MMA fight, which Fumi and Justin also covered in detail towards the end of the show. On this week's show, Fumi Saito & Justin Knipper talked about the history of pro wrestling schools and pro wrestling “literacy” or education over the years. From Farmer Burns' mail-order wrestling manual to Verne Gagne's camps run by Billy Robinson in Minnesota; from the methods of important figures like Eddie Sharkey & Brad Rhenigans to the rise of wrestling schools like the Monster Factory and all the detail in between. How did the old generation of trainers react to so many schools opening up around the US in the '80s and '90s? Fumi & Justin went over that and much more in this one. Modern pro wrestling's backstage drama has become a hotter topic than the wrestling itself. Today's fans crave “reality” in their wrestling, something from the news to attach to the story that's already there, the one presented by the wrestling company. Once again, “Reality” is in, and somewhat similar to how it was 25 years ago, when the Montreal Screwjob happened, when the kayfabe curtain came down off the rails and pro wrestling changed completely, and we—both the industry and the fans—became more fixated on what was fact or fiction, what the boundaries were. “What really happened?” “What did so-and-so do for that to happen?” People were skipping the entree for more tea. Modern Society sips on gossip all day. CM Punk? The AEW media scrum? The melee? “That's so Montreal.” That's what Fumi Saito and Justin Knipper call it now; an adjective. It's shorthand for saying “this type of pro wrestling is, intentionally or not, blending objective reality with storyline fiction.” Join the Patreon for just $5.00 per month here: https://www.patreon.com/fightgamemedia Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/fightgamemedia Join our Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1958473677605950 Follow our Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/fightgamemedia Subscribe to our YouTube Page: https://www.youtube.com/c/FightGameMedia Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fightgamemedia Learn more about your ad choices. In lieu of Riki Choshu: Part Three, which will air next week, Write That Down! presents The Life & Times of Jumbo Tsuruta, a super-cut of the two episodes Fumi Saito & Justin Knipper did on Tsuruta last year. Part One: Fumi & Justin went in deep on the early days of Tomomi “Jumbo Tsuruta, from his early days growing up in Yamanashi prefecture on his parents' grape & peach farm, playing basketball in high school, and his quick transition to amateur wrestling which led to him competing at the 1972 Munich Olympics. They also talked about Tsuruta's move to pro wrestling shortly after the Olympics. Both Giant Baba and Antonio Inoki were courting the young phenom before he decided on joining All Japan Pro Wrestling, where he'd go on to become a company legend over the next few decades. They also touched on Jumbo's early training days with the Funks in Texas, his 1984 AWA World title run, his very special rivalries with Bruiser Brody and Stan Hansen, the unique PWF ruleset, and his subsequent image change in the late '80s ahead of the Super Generation Army era of the '90s. Part Two: This episode picks up in 1985–1986, which is when Riki Choshu turned heel on Tatsumi Fujinami and left NJPW for AJPW with the rest of his ISHIN-GUN crew. It was around this time that Jumbo evolved into a type of enforcer for All Japan, as his character from the '70s and early '80s became bigger, gruffer and meaner. They also talked about Jumbo's relationships to Stan Hansen and Genichiro Tenryu, two of his most important rivals, his use of the power bomb, Tenryu leaving AJPW to help form SWS, and his truly legendary Nippon Budokan match vs. a young Mitsuharu Misawa. Part four of Fumi Saito & Justin Knipper's profile series on Antonio Inoki has arrived. The show picks up where the two left off last time, during the mid-1970s, and finishes at around 1985 in Inoki's career. The two went over the nature of the 11-year NJPW-WWF relationship and Inoki's relations with Vince McMahon Sr, plus how Giant Baba, Bruno Sammartino, and “Superstar” Billy Graham fit into the picture at the time. Fumi also gives out a bit of deathmatch trivia involving Inoki and Umanosuke Ueda before diving deep into Inoki's rivalry with former WWF World Heavyweight champion, Bob Backlund. Fumi goes over the dense and somewhat convoluted story of Inoki winning and vacating the WWF World Heavyweight title from Backlund and how important the Japanese print media was in spinning the angle to the Japanese fanbase. Before wrapping, Fumi & Justin covered Inoki's rivalry with Stan Hansen as well as his storied history with Hulk Hogan and the infamous 1983 IWGP finals match between Inoki and Hogan. Justin also posits the question: Did “Hulkamania” start in Tokyo? Tune in next week for part five, the final episode of Antonio Inoki's profile series on Write That Down! In the next installment of their profile series on Antonio Inoki, Fumi Saito & Justin Knipper continued covering Inoki's full in-ring career, this time focusing on years 1974–1980. After Inoki's (and Seiji Sakaguchi's) NJPW and Giant Baba's AJPW established deals with television channels, the rivalry between the two companies began heating up. Fumi & Justin talked about the hot time it was for pro wrestling Japan during the mid-'70s, the influence of television and print media at the time. The partnership would also lead to Inoki's international breakout bout against Muhammed Ali in what many would call the world's first MMA fight, which Fumi & Justin also covered in detail towards the end of the show. The next episode will focus on Inoki becoming WWWF World Heavyweight champion after beating Bob Backlund, which was never recognized by the WWWF, plus his rivalries with Stan Hansen, Hulk Hogan, Bruiser Brody, Rusher Kimura and a lot more. Justin Knipper was joined by NJPW's English broadcast statistician, Chris Samsa and writer Jeremy Finestone for an extensive breakdown each of the matches and angles on both shows, with lots of thoughts on where the company's creative direction may be headed in 2022, a bit of talk on the news of NJPW returning to AXS TV, and, of course, our thoughts on everyone's favorite faction in pro wrestling: House of Torture!
