In February of 1998, WWE were on the road to WrestleMania XIV, arguably one of the most important wrestling shows in the company's history. That month they were presenting No Way Out of Texas: In Your House, to be headlined by an 8-man tag match featuring 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin, Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie versus D-Generation X with one drawback- one of their biggest stars, and WWE Champion at the time, Shawn Michaels, was unavailable, owing to the back injury he'd suffered at that year's Royal Rumble (and would keep him out of action after WrestleMania for years). Who WWE would book to replace Shawn Michaels in the match was a major talking point going in...and coming out of the event. Also on the show, Kane continued his path to a first-time confrontation with his brother The Undertaker, in a bout with Vader and The Nation of Domination had what was termed a 'War of Attrition' match with Ken Shamrock, Ahmed Johnson and the DOA.  The Random Wrestling Review is brought to you this week by Stephen, Alex and Tinky.

The House Show 20 - WWF No Way Out of Texas: In Your HouseThe Mad Libs of pay per views! Throw people together. Throw matches together. Give me two nouns. This is an odd yet interesting show taking place right in between the Royal Rumble and next month's WrestleMania at which Stone Cold Steve Austin won his first WWF World title. This event took place February 15, 1998 at the Compaq Center in Houston, Texas in front of over 16,000 fans. Stone Cold is the biggest thing in wrestling, followed closely by D-Generation X, and you should hear the ovation for Sable. But one person is missing. Shawn Michaels was injured "training" (or during his Casket Match at the Royal Rumble) and won't be wrestling tonight. Who is a big enough star to take the place of the current WWF champion? Your favorite wrestling podcast hosts deep dive into every match. Kevin gets confused. Count the Pantera references! Where should announcers draw the line? Who got their NWA peanut butter onto my WWF chocolate? What does attrition mean? And does this show feature the worst match in the entire series? Tonight's matches include:  The Headbangers vs. The Artist Formerly Known as Goldust (with Luna) and "Marvelous" Marc Mero (with Sable).  Taka Michinoku (WWF Light Heavyweight champion) vs. Pantera.  The Godwinns vs. The Quebecers.  Justin Bradshaw vs. Jeff Jarrett (NWA North American champion) (with Jim Cornette).  Ahmed Johnson, Ken Shamrock, and the Disciples of Apocalypse (8 Ball, Skull, and Chainz) vs the Nation of Domination (The Rock, Faarooq, Mark Henry, Kama Mustafa, D'Lo Brown).  Kane (with Paul Bearer) vs. Vader.  Cactus Jack, Chainsaw Charlie, Owen Hart, and Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. The New Age Outlaws, Triple H (with Chyna) and a Mystery Partner in a Non Sanctioned Match.  The Retro Network's own Kevin Decent (@MaskedLibrary) along with his two best friends “Sweet” Matty Treats (@MattyTreats) and Matt “the Educator of Excellence” are revisiting the WWF's In Your House pay per view events over the course of the worldwide quarantine. This trios team has been watching wrestling all their lives and debating the outcomes since high school. Its a good show that had its ups and downs. The Rumble itself was quite slow until the fantastic finale and the Main event between Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker was brilliant. Episode 44 was a real banger, plenty of good stuff happening on this one.  It went out live at midnight on 15 Nov 2019. The show kicked off with Rammstein and then a bit of ACDC and Van Halen.  Thanks to a great comment on the WhatsApp line the Roth vs. Hagar argument has been won, it's all about Eddie.   The highlight of the show was the reaction that new kids Equator got for a track off their debut EP called ‘No Mercy'.  Equator are 3 brothers ranging in age between 14 and 18 and they have a seriously good sound.  When it comes to rock bands people often say “They don't make ‘em like that anymore”  to which it can now be argued, “They just did”. The other highlight was W.A.S.P.'s nearly 8 min monster-piece Chainsaw Charlie.  It's probably the only example of lead chainsaw in existence.  I am very grateful to be able to play this music for you guys and the speakers in the Mix 93.8 studio are amazing, when Hanoi Rocks' ‘Don't You Ever Leave Me' blasted through it was like time stood still.  ‘Lions' by Dire Straits was also like cool water in a heatwave.  As always I ran out of time so it was the Big Goodbye until next week.       Artists featured included:  Rammstein, David Bowie, Van Halen, W.A.S.P., Venom, Equator, Fokofpolisiekar, 12th Avenue, Dire Straits, The Horrible Crowes, ACDC, Bruce Springsteen, The Lazy's, Tom Keifer, Black Label Society, Great White, aKing, Metallica, My Chemical Romance, Dokken, Stiff Little Fingers, The Burning, Slash, Therapy?, Tom Petty & Hanoi Rocks

The School of Morton Podcast with Ricky Morton and Scotty Campbell

Ricky Morton goes in-depth with his memories of wrestling at WrestleMania 14 and during the Attitude Era. He recalls “Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s feud with “The Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels and the involvement of boxing legend Mike Tyson. The fifth episode of the School of Morton podcast co-hosted by WWE Hall of Fame Inductee Ricky Morton of the Rock n’ Roll Express is available for download right now! Ricky Morton shares this backstage memory from WrestleMania 14: “What I really recall is… I was walking down the hall in the back and I heard somebody say ‘Hey Ricky Morton’ and it was Mike Tyson”. The WWE Hall of Famer offers his thoughts on an outsider such as Mike Tyson being brought in to participate in a WrestleMania. Ricky said, “I know where everything is going… it is to better our business. To look to him to come to be in the main event and having Shawn Michaels against Steve Austin with Mike Tyson (as referee)… it was great.” Matches that night at WrestleMania 14 featured the first time the Undertaker faced Kane with Paul Bearer being a part of the evening. Ricky also details memories of wrestling Paul Bearer who was then known as Percy Pringle. He talks about him booking in Memphis Wrestling with “Dirty” Dutch Mantell and the man that went on to be the Undertaker. Then he goes on to talk about the Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak ending. Ricky talks about the first time he ever saw a dumpster being a part of a finish, which was during the match with Mick Foley, Terry Funk (as Chainsaw Charlie) vs. the New Age Outlaws. Ricky speaks on their time in WWE in 1998 while feuding with multiple tag teams including Hawk and Animal, The Legion of Doom, the Road Warriors. He also shares his memory of wrestling a bear and reveals his family kept one caged in their yard. Plus an incredible story about Don and Jackie Fargo and their on the road antics. March 30th, 1998 "Monday Night Raw": Vince McMahon presents "Stone Cold" with an ultimatum that will come to define their relationship for the next several years. Triple-H thinks Shawn Michaels has "dropped the ball," so he forms a new version of D-Generation-X with two current roster members and one of his pals who is returning from WCW. The Rock & Faarooq take on Ken Shamrock & Steve Blackman, and the resulting fallout completely changes The Nation of Domination. We get the debut vignette of one of the most controversial superstars from The Attitude Era, and he wants the world to know that he is coming. Paul Bearer challenges The Undertaker to a rematch on behalf of Kane, but this time he wants it to be......... an Inferno Match. In a rematch from "WrestleMania," Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie go up against The New Age Outlaws in a Steel Cage Match for the WWF Tag Team Titles. The new-look Legion of Doom square off with two members of Los Boricuas, so you can probably imagine how that goes. The Headbangers put their NWA Tag Team Titles on the line against The New Midnight Express, and Jim Cornette brings a former UFC competitor into his NWA stable. Luna Vachon wants a rematch with Sable at "Unforgiven," and she invents a new type of match which will ultimately end up being trotted out quite a few times during The Attitude Era. March 23rd, 1998: It's the go-home episode of "Raw" before "Wrestlemania 14," and special guest co-host Martin Dixon is here to discuss what happens! Steve Austin eagerly awaits the arrival of DX and Mike Tyson, but Commissioner Slaughter preoccupies him by booking him into an impromptu match with The Rock. Kane attempts to prove that he is superior to his brother by victimizing an unsuspecting stagehand in a very memorable way. Meanwhile, The Undertaker cuts a surprisingly tender promo in front of his parents' gravestones (and by that I mean he's on a fake set somewhere). Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie square off with The Quebecers while WWF Tag Team Champions The New Age Outlaws look on from the entrance ramp. Chainz goes one-on-one with Faarooq, and The Rock seeks to help out his Nation of Domination pal....... or does he? Sable is presented with a commemorative plaque by Vince Russo(!), but Luna Vachon and The Artist Formerly Known As Goldust crash the party. Steve Blackman puts his undefeated streak on the line against "Double-J" Jeff Jarrett. Former tag team partners Bradshaw and Barry Windham attempt to settle their feud over who is the WWF's most dominant overweight cowboy. The New Midnight Express have their debut match against Skull & 8-Ball, but the appearances of several other tag teams end up complicating things. Enjoying the Podcast? March 17th, 1998: This week, it's a special Tuesday episode of "Raw" because The USA Network wanted to air a whale movie in the WWF's Monday timeslot instead! Four months after The Montreal Screwjob, Vince McMahon finally embraces his inner bad guy and tells the world what he really thinks about the possibility of a "Stone Cold" Steve Austin title reign. The Rock introduces not one, not two, but three of his most popular catchphrases! Ken Shamrock uses some rather racist language to describe D'Lo Brown, which he later pays for by receiving one of the most horrific chair-shots in wrestling history. Sable calls out Luna Vachon, but an unexpected guest ends up crashing the party. Triple-H attempts to coerce an injured Owen Hart into defending his European Title less than two weeks before their scheduled match at "Wrestlemania 14." Chainsaw Charlie goes head-to-head with Billy Gunn, and The Road Dogg ends up being the victim of a rather bizarre form of humiliation. The Rock 'n Roll Express & Jim Cornette take on The Headbangers in a 3-on-2 Handicap Match, but Cornette's newest proteges end up getting the last laugh. "Double J" Jeff Jarrett goes up against Tom Brandi, and the result of the match causes someone to blurt out a very loud f-bomb (which The WWE Network thankfully leaves uncensored!). Plus, an appearance by a local sports mascot, The Undertaker openly plagiarizes "Pulp Fiction," and three more superstars get inducted into Wrestler Heaven! Enjoying the Podcast? March 9th, 1998: Steve Austin is still irate about Mike Tyson joining DX so he calls out Vince McMahon, and "Stone Cold" is willing to hold the show hostage until the boss shows up. Later, Tyson himself gives a very brief, pre-taped interview to Jim Ross in which he basically says nothing important. Owen Hart defends his European Title against overweight cowboy Barry Windham while Triple-H and Chyna lurk at ringside. Kane and Paul Bearer claim that they are not afraid of The Undertaker, but The Dead Man puts that theory to the test by literally haunting the arena (yes, you read that correctly). The Rock & Faarooq take on Ken Shamrock & Steve Blackman (a.k.a. The Most Awesome Tag Team In History) as The Nation of Domination's internal turmoil continues. The Artist Formerly Known As Goldust goes one-on-one with Marc Mero in a match where Sable and Luna are needlessly handcuffed to opposing ringposts. Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie square off with The Quebecers while The New Age Outlaws seek to make even more mischief. Aguila squares off with "Too Sexy" Brian Christopher, who provides us with an incredibly creepy soundbite. Enjoying the Podcast? Owen Hart defends his European Championship against Mark Henry while Chyna attempts to make her presence felt. Jeff Jarrett has left The NWA and inconceivably returned to his former country singer gimmick, and his new pal Tennessee Lee is along for the ride. The New Age Outlaws claim they are unable to defend their WWF Tag Team Titles after being assaulted by Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie last week, but Commissioner Slaughter is not buying it. Tom Brandi renews his rivalry with Marc Mero, who continues to feud with The Artist Formerly Known As Goldust, Luna Vachon, and his own wife. Steve Blackman faces Kama Mustafa, whose Nation of Domination pals are banned from ringside. Taka Michinoku and The Headbangers team up to face Barry Windham and The Rock 'n Roll Express as The NWA continues to struggle. February 23rd, 1998: The New Age Outlaws defend their WWF Tag Team Titles against The Legion of Doom, but the ensuing fallout may spell the end for Hawk and Animal. Kane and Paul Bearer call out the company's biggest star........ but they want to wait until next week's show to face him. Shawn Michaels, Triple-H, and Chyna have a pre-taped message from HBK's home in San Antonio because they can't be bothered to make the long, 180-mile trip to Waco this week. Owen Hart defends his European Title against Marc Mero in a match which is somehow the main event. Another major sports celebrity is confirmed for "Wrestlemania 14," but The WWE Network edits out his message to the fans (thankfully, we found it!). The Rock squares off with the somehow-still-undefeated Steve Blackman as the dissenion within The Nation of Domination continues to grow. Ken Shamrock goes one-on-one with Jeff Jarrett, who may no longer want to be part of The NWA. The Disciples of Apocalypse take on The Truth Commission in what is thankfully the final "Raw" match for one of these factions! NWA Tag Team Champions The Rock 'n Roll Express put their titles on the line against The Headbangers, but this time the match will be contested under WWF rules. The Artist Formerly Known As Goldust mocks his legendary father and then takes on an unamused Bradshaw. Taka Michinoku faces Barry Windham in a ridiculous THIRD match of the night which features an NWA member. Plus, Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie are lurking backstage, and Sable gets called out by Luna Vachon, whose insane promos are surprisingly awesome. Chyna is threatening to sue Steve Austin for his recent actions, but "Stone Cold" does not seem to be very remorseful. Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie take on Marc Mero and The Artist Formerly Known As Goldust in the main event as the rivalry between Sable and Luna escalates. Owen Hart defends his European Title against Jeff Jarrett in a match which is actually quite enjoyable. The Rock attempts to soothe things over with his Nation of Domination pals by presenting them with gifts, and an irritated Faarooq then squares off with the undefeated Steve Blackman. The slumping Legion of Doom go up against The Quebecers while WWF Tag Team Champions The New Age Outlaws look to cause more mischief. Ken Shamrock battles Sniper as The Truth Commission continues to squabble internally. NWA Tag Team Champions The Rock 'n Roll Express put their belts on the line against The Headbangers in a match which is contested under NWA rules. The New Age Outlaws attempt to make this show entertaining by reenacting their Dumpster attack from one week ago. Kane and Paul Bearer seek to intimidate Vader by mildly burning a clock (yes, seriously).
