From sending audition tapes to Metallica and The Rolling Stones to becoming one of wrestling's most iconic figures, Hulk Hogan's journey through entertainment spans nearly five decades of unexpected twists and reinventions. In this deeply personal conversation, the 71-year-old WWE Hall of Famer pulls back the curtain on his early years, revealing how he transitioned from playing bass guitar six nights a week in southeastern clubs to wrestling as "The Super Destroyer" for just $25 a match. Hogan shares surprising stories about living in his van on Pensacola Beach, quitting wrestling multiple times to work as a longshoreman, and how Vince McMahon Sr. gave him the name that would change pop culture forever. The wrestling legend divulges shocking behind-the-scenes details about his breakthrough role as Thunderlips in Rocky III – including how he negotiated his $14,000 payment with Sylvester Stallone and subsequently got fired from the WWF for taking the part. Even more surprising is his revelation about the famous 1984 Madison Square Garden match against the Iron Sheik, where a competing promoter allegedly offered the Sheik $100,000 to legitimately break Hogan's leg.Beyond the nostalgic wrestling tales, Hogan speaks candidly about his spiritual journey, describing how he's found peace through faith after the physical toll of ten back surgeries and countless other injuries from his wrestling career. Now running Hogan's Hangout in Tampa and promoting his Real American Beer, he reflects on the profound impact his character had on generations of fans worldwide.Whether you grew up watching Hulkamania run wild or simply appreciate stories of perseverance and reinvention, this conversation offers a rare glimpse into the man behind the 24-inch pythons. Recently described as the worst ever Christmas movie, Chris has chosen movie starring Thunder Lips himself, Terry Gene Bollea, or better known as Hulk Hogan. It's the Christmas movie oddity you've never heard of. And probably for good reason, until now. Directed by John Murlowski, the film was produced on a relatively modest budget, which was probably spent entirely on Hogan's appearance fee and the special effects, none of which were convincing enough to make this a holiday classic. Attempting to blend action, slapstick humor, and Christmas cheer into one very messy package, the result is a film that feels as awkward as a wig on a bodybuilder. Despite the lack of chemistry, a confused premise, and a budget that was far less than what was needed for the visual effects, the production team managed to pull something together—although “together” seems a generous term. The filming was done mostly on location in the sunny California suburbs, which doesn't exactly scream "winter wonderland." And yet, there were attempts at creating Christmas magic, including a series of disjointed action sequences, an obligatory villain, and a final scene that looked like it was filmed in a single afternoon, probably after the crew had already packed up for the holiday season. Hogan himself was reportedly less than thrilled with his role but went through with it because, well, it was work. When it was finally released, Santa with Muscles didn't exactly set the box office on fire, but it did secure a spot in the annals of 'so-bad-it's-good' cinema. After the accident, he stumbles into a mall where a group of orphans and their caretaker are being threatened by a villain who wants to take control of the orphanage. With his newfound belief that he is Santa, Blake, now in the role of an unexpectedly jolly and bumbling hero, must save the children and foil the villain's plans. All while struggling with his confused identity and learning the true meaning of Christmas. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

When I was 10 years old, my dad took me to see the movie Rocky III and aside from buying the whole champion has a fall from grace, becomes underdog again and fights his way back to the top storyline, hook, line and sinker, I was completely enthralled with one scene in particular where the world boxing champion took on the wrestling champion in a charity match. Rocky Balboa vs Thunderlips the ultimate male. This was my first look at Hulk Hogan which eventually kickstarted my childhood guilty pleasure of watching wrestling. It had the full checklist of items to attract a young me. You had your heroes, villains, colourful characters, wild storylines, chiseled physiques, crazy athleticism….Despite my parents standing in the room and watching with me for a few minutes before walking away laughing and shaking their heads asking ``how can you watch this?” I loved it and I so admired these athletes with their muscles, strength and ability not to mention microphone skills. The 80's wrestlings  so called golden era eventually gave way to the 90's attitude era. Me now in my 20's  living on my own and free from my parents judgement would instead laugh along with the ridiculousness either by myself or with friends when we would get together for the latest pay per view event. We would entertain ourselves going along  with the wrestlers, in character of course as they made their way through their far fetched storylines each  more wild then the last All the while marvelling at the incredible stunts and feats of strength these guys were putting their bodies through. As the months and years went on some really sad stories started to come out about aging wrestlers and how their lifestyle was leading to some tragic consequences. There was drug and steroid abuse (surprise, surprise), alcohol, pills, early death...and even murder! There were so many wrestlers dying young that you can go through your list of favourite wrestlers as a kid and the majority of them are now dead, most before they even made it out of their 40's. Those who didn't happen to drop dead suddenly had suffered from broken bodies, weight gain, depression….definitely not a great way to live out your golden years. Through all these tragic stories of wrestlers retiring to a sad life with debilitating injuries, depression and  addiction  there was one success story that stood out,  Diamond Dallas Page (DDP) had taken his fame that he built through his wrestling career and in retirement started  DDP Yoga. Despite walking away from shark tank without a deal Diamond Dallas Page has created a HUGELY successful brand with his program using his unique form of power yoga using traditional yoga positions, rehabilitation techniques, calisthenics and dynamic resistance. I always talk about the 23/1 rule saying that you need to make the most out of your 23 hours outside the gym to get the best results from your 1 hour in it, a mobility program like this could be a great step to help the strength athlete….After all if it can bring back Jake “The Snake” Roberts from the brink of disaster that he was, it sounds interesting to me! Let's have a look at DDPY for the strength athlete. jQuery(document).ready(function(){ cab.clickify(); }); Original Podcast with clickable words https://tinyurl.com/y7nn6su3 Rocky 3 is a 1982 American sports drama film written, directed by, and starring Sylvester Stallone. Scannán drámaíochta spóirt Meiriceánach 1982 é Rocky 3 a scríobhadh, a stiúraigh agus a léirigh Sylvester Stallone. It is the third installment in the Rocky film series, and the second in the franchise to be directed by Stallone. Is é an tríú tráthchuid é sa tsraith scannán Rocky, agus an dara ceann sa saincheadúnas a bheidh faoi stiúir Stallone. Three years after winning the world heavyweight championship against Apollo Creed, Rocky Balboa has had a string of ten successful title defenses. Trí bliana tar éis dó craobh trom-mheáchain an domhain a bhuachan i gcoinne Apollo Creed, tá sraith de dheich gcosaint teidil rathúla ag Rocky Balboa. His fame, wealth, endorsements, and celebrity profile have increased, leading him to participate in an exhibition charity event against the world wrestling champion, Thunderlips. Tá méadú tagtha ar a cháil, a shaibhreas, a fhormhuinithe, agus a phróifíl cáiliúla, rud a thug air páirt a ghlacadh in imeacht carthanais taispeántais i gcoinne an chraobh dhomhanda wrestling, Thunderlips. Rockys manager, Mickey, worriedly eyes a young and powerful contender rapidly rising through the ranks named James "Clubber" Lang. Is cúis imní do bhainisteoir Rocky, Mickey, iomaitheoir óg cumhachtach a ardú go tapa trí na céimeanna darb ainm James "Clubber" Lang. While unveiling a statue of himself at the stairway by the Philadelphia Museum of Art just prior to announcing his retirement, Rocky is publicly challenged by Lang, now the number-one contender. Agus é ag nochtadh dealbh de féin ag an staighre ag Músaem Ealaíne Philadelphia díreach sular fhógair sé go raibh sé ar scor, tugann Lang dúshlán poiblí do Rocky, an t-iomaitheoir is mó anois. Lang accuses Rocky of intentionally accepting challenges from lesser opponents, and goads Rocky into accepting his challenge for a championship fight. Cuireann Lang i leith Rocky gur ghlac sé d'aon ghnó le dúshláin ó lucht freasúra níos lú, agus tugann sé aghaidh ar Rocky glacadh lena dhúshlán i gcoinne troid craobhchomórtais. Mickey initially wants no part of it. Níl Mickey ag iarraidh aon chuid de i dtosach. Pressed by Rocky, Mickey confesses that he handpicked the opponents for Rockys title defenses in order to spare him from another beating of the kind that Creed gave him in their rematch. Faoi bhrú ag Rocky, admhaíonn Mickey gur phioc sé na hagóideoirí as cosaintí teidil Rocky d'fhonn é a spáráil ó bhualadh eile den chineál a thug Creed dó ina athchur. He explains that Lang is young and powerful, and most of all hes "hungry", and that Rocky wont last three rounds because he hasn't been hungry ever since he won the title and became "civilized". Míníonn sé go bhfuil Lang óg agus cumhachtach, agus go mór mór tá “ocras” air, agus nach mairfidh Rocky trí bhabhta mar nach raibh ocras air riamh ó bhuaigh sé an teideal agus go raibh sé “sibhialta”. Rocky, now knowing that he never really defended his title against the best opponents, convinces Mickey to work with him for one last fight. Cuireann Rocky, agus a fhios aige anois nár chosain sé a theideal i gcoinne na bhfreasúra is fearr riamh, ina luí ar Mickey oibriú leis le haghaidh troid dheireanaigh amháin. Despite his promise to Mickey to live in the gym, Rocky trains in a Las Vegas-style environment that is filled with distractions, and is clearly not taking his training seriously. In ainneoin a ghealltanais do Mickey ‘maireachtáil sa seomra aclaíochta', traenálann Rocky i dtimpeallacht i stíl Las Vegas atá líonta le seachráin, agus is léir nach bhfuil sé ag glacadh dáiríre lena oiliúint. In contrast, Lang trains with ruthless determination and vigor. I gcodarsnacht leis sin, traenálann Lang le diongbháilteacht agus le fuinneamh neamhthrócaireach.

Suburban Commando was a 1991 family-friendly comedy starring Hulk Hogan, Christopher Lloyd, and Shelly Duval. Hulk Hogan stars as Shep Ramsey, an intergalactic bounty hunter that seeks refugee on Earth after his space ship is damaged. Lessons are learned, characters grow, and mimes are hurt in gratuitous ways. It’s fun for the whole family!Suburban Commando was Hulk Hogan’s attempt at mainstream movie stardom. After becoming an ‘80s pop culture icon and the biggest star that wrestling and WWF had produced up to that point (based largely on his appearance in Rocky III as Thunderlips), the next place that Hulkamania wanted to run wild on was your movie screens. No Holds Barred wasn’t the platform that provided that boost, so maybe a cameo in Gremlins 2: The New Batch and a family-oriented comedy featuring proven actors would help.Just as Hogan paved the way for future wrestlers to transcend the square circle, did he also make the Hollywood transition easier for guys like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and John Cena?If you’re a fan of vintage WWF or current WWE, it’s worth checking out this movie for the rare out-of-character performance from The Undertaker. The Dead Man plays a silent bounty hunter who is trying to capture Shep Ramsey…but this bounty hunter has a reason for his silence: he sounds like a baby when he talks. Few wrestlers have transcended the sport of professional wrestling. Sure, you've got the Rock and Batista now, but during the 80s, the business was still an oddity. It was a culture within itself. Then came the boom of the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE). Their rise was a swift one, but it could not have come without stars. And in the 80s—even into the late 90s—there was no bigger star than Hulk Hogan. In the early 80s, Hogan had appeared in the box office behemoth Rocky III as "Thunder Lips" and even graced the cover of Sports Illustrated. He was a face recognizable to not only fans, but general audiences. Thus, in 1989, Hogan was catapulted into his first starring role on the big screen No Holds Barred. The movie was a modest hit, grossing over $16 million on an $8 million budget. Its success, though, came with notoriety; enough that Hogan would be selected for another high profile part—that of Shep Ramsey in Suburban Commando.  Unlike his previous film, Suburban Commando—a fish out of water tale of an intergalactic warrior forced into a vacation on earth—failed to make a profit, grossing only $8 million on a budget of $11. Despite its earned infamy as a flop, its a movie that must be seen; it's an unapologetic, ridiculous B-movie that works simply because of how committed Christopher Lloyd (Doc Brown from Back to the Future) is to the shtick. I can't say that you'll love it, but you'll sure find plenty to laugh at (a good bit of it unintentionally)—Shep punching a mime, skateboarding in Zubaz, and engaging in a clash with a yet to premiere in the WWE Undertaker included. So sit back, grab a spare vial of anti-freeze, and enjoy as I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), and the Irate Lover embark on a podcasting adventure to not only save the neighborhood, but the galaxy at large. The roles we play and the rules we think are guiding an interaction drive our behavior. In this episode, we talk about how roles, stereotypes, and rules guide what people do. We also get a chance to talk about how the groups people belong to impact how they experience life. At the micro level, we can see people, but as we back away, we see how individuals are merely the pieces that make up groups that are categorized so that we can make sense of situations we are in. This episode is valuable to understanding how people interact in different situations and gives some tools people can use to help them understand others and analyze situations they are in. As yourself:1. Who is playing what role.2. What stereotypes drive their behavior.3. What game do they think they’re in?4. Who is making the rules?5. Who knows the rules? This episode is a special clip show collecting the first 8 rounds of our fictional fighting tournament called UNDEBEATABLE, where we childishly discuss who would win in a fight between two randomly drawn fictional characters (from movies/comics/video games/television/and more). It's as dumb as it is fun. (Spoilers) The fights include: Ceasar the Ape Vs. 90's era Lobo Ash Williams Vs. Shredder Django Vs. 70's TV Version of Captain America The T-Rex from Jurassic Park Vs. Furiosa John Constantine Vs. Frankenstein's Monster From Hell Venom Vs. Thunderlips the Ultimate Male Sinestro Vs.  The Predator Swamp Thing Vs. King Leonidas

Movie Meltdown - Episode 369 This week we are joined by our special guest co-host comedian Justin Golak, as we discuss one of his favorite movies - Rocky. We look at not just the movie itself, but also it's impact on pop culture - and just how much we actually remember based on how much Rocky has seeped into the public consciousness. Plus we also look at how this first installment fits into the long-running series that will continue over the next 40 years. And as we discuss Stallone-adjacent characters, we also mention... comedy or baseball, cable the way it used to be, arm wrestling is the thing, reading comprehension, Ghostbusters 2, organized crime, garblyness, it's very different going back and rewatching it now... having not seen it in years, how do you fight you, creating a rig for the scene, the sub-genre of boxing movies, Survivor, escaping Cleveland, music video culture, Cobra, drinking raw eggs, on VHS taped from TV, I want to be better, Thunderlips, being weird and awkward, Over the Top, three pages of dialogue in ten seconds of body language, spattered with training, running with your girlfriend up the stairs, at every turn... he makes a different choice, Copland, going heel, it's essentially an origin story... but you didn't know that if you didn't know there's be sequels, novelizations, outsourcing the property, Apollo Creed, being literal, Irwin Winkler, forceps, Ruskies, office sign dialogue, Batman Begins, this is like a thing everyone will do forever now, losing the right way, getting your hands bloody, that's a real person and all art is drug-fueled from the beginning of time. Spoiler Alert: Spoilers for Rocky... and the entire franchise. You have been warned.  "I'm a huge fan... it's the only thing I geek out about... it's like my Star Wars." What's your first memory of professional wrestling? That's the impetus for this week's story, and it evolves into a conversation between host Tim Kail and his brother Ben Kail about art, pro-wrestling, and the lasting impression Rocky III left on their lives. In part one, The Lockup (11:33), Tim Kail reviews the latest episode of NXT and discusses the uncertain state of the WWE's best product. He poses a question to you, the listener, about whether or not his NXT anxieties and his fears about Vince McMahon's wrath are irrational. In part two, The High Spot (18:15), Ben & Tim discuss the effect "quasi-reality" has had on the culture of entertainment, and how "kids today" might be missing out (through no fault of their own) on the power of kayfabe. In part three, The Finish (37:42), Ben shares a story about how professional wrestling, specifically Hulk Hogan as "Thunderlips" in Rocky III, left an unexpected, lasting impression on his life. Follow Tim on Twitter @MaximusWrestler. Follow Ben on Twitter @BenKail. And remember to go to www.workofwrestling.com for all the latest wrestling reviews and editorials.
