Our guest today, Kathy Guillermo, is the Senior Vice President of PETA, and throughout her impressive 30-year career, she's exposed cruelty to animals in laboratories, the horse racing industry, and major corporations. Some of her many victories include persuading Gillette and Estée Lauder to permanently ban animal testing, getting NASA to call off radiation experiments on monkeys, and pressuring the Coast Guard to stop using goats and pigs for trauma training. Kathy also wrote the book Monkey Business: The Disturbing Case That Launched the Animal Rights Movement, which details the landmark Silver Springs Monkey cruelty case that led to the first conviction of an animal experimenter on cruelty-to-animals charges. Tune in to this special episode to hear about the important work PETA continues to do and learn how we can all take steps to effect change! “95% of new drugs that appear effective and safe when they're tested on animals fail in human clinical trials. We have a 95% failure rate in the development of drugs. And when you look at specific disease areas, you see it's even higher. You look at neurodegenerative diseases, for example, it's like 99% failure. The utter failure of drugs for Alzheimer's and stroke, for a whole host of issues, is not working. So the idea that somehow science will come grinding to a halt is a false narrative put out by people who make their living experimenting on animals and by the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. funding agency that pays for more animal experiments than any other agency in the entire world. So you've got an endeavor animal testing that fails 90% of the time, but it gets half of the research budget of the National Institutes of Health. It's utterly ridiculous.” – Kathy Guillermo What we discuss in this episode: The transformative power of connecting with animals. Inside PETA's fight with the barbaric horse racing industry. How you can be certain the products you buy are cruelty-free. Why testing on animals doesn't actually work. Proven alternatives to animal testing. How PETA was able to stop trauma training drills with live animals in the Coast Guard. What you can do to help animals. One of the critical campaigns of Animal Wellness Action is to ensure the modernization of FDA drug-testing standards, which currently require the suffering and entail the deaths of countless thousands of animals each year. Key to this modernization--and the alleviation of this toll on animals--is to eliminate the requirement in the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetics Act of 1938 for animal testing as the only test method for any new drug development protocol. The pharmaceutical industry is burdened by outdated FDA statutes and regulations that bar the use of faster, cheaper, and more reliable test methods. Recently, the work has become more challenging. Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina has introduced legislation to strip all riders from the bill, leaving just the base funding package for FDA. That maneuver would block key reforms of FDA and keep the status quo when it comes to animal testing. There is urgency to address the problem because between 90 and 95 percent of drugs found safe in preclinical tests fail during human clinical trials due to toxicities not predicted by traditional animal tests or because of lack of efficacy. This exposes the public to unacceptable risk and stifles the movement of life-saving drugs into the marketplace. The broader results are extraordinarily high costs for drugs, inordinately long wait periods bringing drugs to market, and, even after the drugs are approved for common use, the potential of serious side effects for consumers. However, significant investments in technology development and research have resulted in transformative breakthroughs in alternative methods, enabling us to leave most animal testing behind. One of the many organizations also in this fight is PETA. Kathy Guillermo, a senior vice president at PETA, joins our founder and president Wayne Pacelle to discuss her organization's work to uncover animal abuse related to medical testing, improvements in science such as organs on a chip, and legislative work to ensure passage of the initiative. The news that the National Institutes of Health funded hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of experiments on dogs in a foreign country sparked outrage in U.S. media. The idea of wasteful spending on useless animal experiments has been the target of PETA for years. But now it's apparent that in the divided political environment of Washington, there's one issue that is truly bipartisan: Saving the Animals, and especially those at NIH. PETA Sr. VP Kathy Guillermo talks about the Research Modernization Deal that could be a bipartisan answer to a cruel and ugly situation at NIH, where nearly $40 billion dollars goes to wasteful animal experiments every year. File this under “now I've heard it all!” In an absolutely bizarre twist, Dr. Anthonty Fauci has come under fire for greenlighting the funding for a horrifyingly cruel medical study that uses caged puppies in North Africa. A bipartisan group of congress members are demanding answers! Lou talks with Kathy Guillermo, Senior Vice President at Peta about what they think should be done about it.
Dr. Francis Collins, the director of the National Institutes of Health, announced he is leaving at the end of 2021. PETA has been calling on him to resign since August. His departure means the biggest supporter/enabler of animal torture and experimentation in government-funded research can now be replaced with someone who is a true visionary of modern science. It could be a major breakthrough that saves animals, redirects money to science that works, as well as help the American public who expect NIH to produce medical advancements. Hall of Fame Horse Trainer Bob Baffert is seen by many as the "face of horse racing." But after an unpredictable win at the Kentucky Derby, Baffert's horse, Medina Spirit, failed a drug test and was shown to have an illegal steroid in his blood. Now Baffert and the entire gambling sport has been shamed and placed under a cloud. The drug scandal is just the latest for Baffert, who has had more than 30 horses fail drug tests in his extensive career. PETA Sr. VP Kathy Guillermo continues to pressure the industry to stop the abuses of horses by trainers. She explains the latest scandal and what it could mean for racing, which has already shrunk in half since PETA's Equine Matters campaign began more than ten years ago. Looking for cruelty-free cosmetics and need a reputable list? Kathy Guillermo, PETA Sr.VP on Laboratory Investigations, knows. She has spent more than 30 years leading the cruelty-free cosmetics campaign at PETA. While most companies have stopped testing on animals, the issue continues to evolve as China still requires testing that impacts hundreds of thousands of animals. Still, PETA knows which companies are reputable. PETA's Beauty without Bunnies app has the most reliable database to guide consumers looking for cosmetics not tested on animals. An evil trend has emerged among vivisectors that includes murder, rape and molestation. Is it somehow connected to vivisectors' cruel and abusive tests on animals? Or merely coincidence? PETA research has found 17 examples of vivisectors involved in serious violent crime against people. Kathy Guillermo, PETA's Sr. VP of Laboratory Investigations says the findings warrant the need for psychological tests on the vivisectors before they are given the millions of dollars in taxpayer-funded research grants. PETA has been the leader in advocating the end to the senseless deaths of horses in the horse racing industry. Now, just in time for the Breeders Cup, PETA has announced its 11-point plan to save horses' lives and plans to take it to corporate boardrooms of racetracks across the nation. From West Virginia to Arizona, small tracks often operate under the radar. Shareholder activism has been effectively employed by PETA in the past, for example, to bring the end of animal testing in cosmetics. Kathy Guillermo, PETA Senior VP in charge of the horse racing effort, talks about the specific items in the plan which include banning the whip, use of a pre-race scan, and a ban on medications. A gambler backed by PETA won a settlement in a lawsuit that sought recourse when the horses he bet on lost to another who had been given illegal drugs. Jeff Tretter got a $20,000 settlement against a trainer and owner at the Meadowlands racetrack, in a case believed to be a landmark for gamblers who bet on a sport prone to cheating through illegal drug use. If you want to put blame somewhere for the novel coronavirus, Covid-19, than don't ignore the live animal markets. China shutdown the Wuhan market in early March, but now PETA is petitioning the World Health Organization to shut down all live animal meat markets everywhere. PETA Sr. VP Kathy Guillermo talks about how a simple matter could have prevented the virus from skipping species afflicting humans. We also talk to Eric Mills of Action for Animals, a grassroots group based in the San Francisco Bay Area , dedicated to closing down live animal markets here. Kathy Guillermo, PETA Sr. VP, talks about PETA's video of Mongolian Groom breaking down in the home stretch of the last race--the $6 Million BC Classic-- at Breeders Cup 2019. It was the exclamation point that ended horse racing's biggest weekend in the U.S. Guillermo also talks about the importance of a pending LA District Attorney's investigation, what the governor of California can do now (including a suspension of racing), and an LA Times editorial which outlines suggestions PETA has made to end the cruelty at the races--not just at Santa Anita but at racetracks all over the country. Guillermo believes the use of scan equipment could have kept Mongolian Groom from racing in the first place. The problem isn't horses on drugs to enhance their performance. The problem is horses are forced to run hurt, given drugs to mask the pain, then break down when they overexert themselves while racing to their deaths. It's the harsh truth of racing and Mongolian Groom's death is just another example of a horse who would be alive today if it weren't made to race to its death. See the video of Mongolian Groom's breakdown. It's what the industry doesn't want you to see--on PETA.org.
