What if food didn't have to come from animals—or even plants? In this episode, Nil Zacharias sits down with Thomas Jonas, CEO and co-founder of Nature's Fynd, to explore the origins of Fy, a microbial protein discovered in a Yellowstone hot spring that's grown through fermentation without soil, sunlight, or traditional agriculture. They discuss the company's unconventional path, why they stayed quiet while others chased the hype, and how Fy is powering a new category of food—from dairy-free cream cheese to meatless breakfast patties. It's a conversation about building what comes after agriculture, the future of protein as a platform, and how to stay focused when the rest of the industry loses its way. Karuna, an entrepreneurial brand builder, shares her journey with Nature's Fynd, a company that developed a new protein source from a unique fungus discovered in Yellowstone National Park. 1. From Outer Space to Your Plate: The Unlikely Origin of Nature's Fynd Nature's Fynd's story began with a NASA research project aimed at understanding how life could survive in extreme environments. This research led to the discovery of a remarkable fungus thriving in Yellowstone National Park's volcanic springs. 2. Revolutionising Protein: A New Frontier in Nutrition Nature's Fynd's fungus can produce protein in just 3 to 4 days, compared to the months or years required by animals and plants. This rapid growth makes it a game-changer in meeting the dietary needs of a growing global population. The protein is also incredibly nutritious, containing 50% protein, 30% fiber, and a variety of vitamins and minerals. Additionally, the fungus thrives in an acidic environment, eliminating the need for antibiotics, pesticides, or hormones, making it a cleaner and healthier protein source. 3. Marketing the Unthinkable: Turning Fungi into Food One of the biggest challenges Nature's Fynd faced was convincing consumers to embrace a fungus-based food. The company focused on taste, understanding that no matter how sustainable or healthy a product is, it must taste good to succeed. Nature's Fynd built its brand around the Explorer archetype, a rare identity in the food industry, which aligned perfectly with their innovative story of pioneering new territories in food production. Through strategic branding and storytelling, they successfully shifted the narrative from “weird” to “wonderful.” 4. Launching in a Pandemic: Nature's Fynd's 2020 Debut Nature's Fynd was set to launch in March 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic began. While this timing seemed unfortunate, it turned into an opportunity as consumers sought innovative solutions during the crisis. The brand's message of optimism and innovation resonated with consumers, making their launch a symbol of hope in uncertain times. 5. Navigating Consumer Skepticism: Building Trust with Taste Understanding that taste is the top priority for consumers, Nature's Fynd focused on making their products delicious to gain acceptance, even among skeptics of fungi-based food. Early market research revealed that younger, more open-minded consumers were the most interested in the product. By carefully segmenting the market, the company effectively targeted the most promising customer groups. Recognizing the deep cultural connection people have with food, Nature's Fynd introduced their product in familiar forms like yogurt and cheese spreads, easing the transition to fungi-based foods.

Have you ever heard about Infotel Broadband Services Limited (IBSL)? Even if you haven't, I'm very much sure that you can't deny that you don't know its current rebranded form. I'll give you a hint; this company currently has the largest market share in terms of wireless subscribers (i.e. telecom) in India, even greater than Airtel. Yes, you've got it right, it's Jio. Before getting rebranded as Jio, the original company IBSL, was the only company that won broadband spectrum in all 22 circles in India in the 4G auction in 2010.And later that year Reliance Industries acquired the company. After Jio's official launch in September 2016, it gained the first 50 million customers in just 83 days of launch and currently has an overall subscriber base of 414.9 million customers. “That's the Reliance way of doing things”, quoted by Farooq Adam, during the podcast. What he means is that at Reliance, just the sheer scale at which they launch and operate their product and make their marketing strategy, ensures the success of the product. And when Reliance approached him in 2019 after he had raised the Series-C led by Google, this is exactly what convinced him to combine Fynd with Reliance and support the rollout of JioMart.During the podcast, Farooq talks about the early days at Shopsense (rebranded as Fynd), getting rejected by investors during the first round, and his experience being an Angel Investor. Notes - 01:18 - Early childhood in Kuwait; getting into IIT Bombay 05:01 - Initial stint with Adsale; adding another sale by recommendations & coupons10:12 - Visiting Diesel (clothing store) on Juhu Tara Road (Mumbai)14:58 - Problem statements solved by Shopsense17:24 - Getting benchmarked against Capillary Technologies by investors22:40 - Rebranding Shopsense as Fynd to cater to hyperlocal marketplace31:26 - “How & when you collect your NPS is very interesting.”32:08 - Acquired by Reliance after getting Google-led Series-C funding51:39 - Experience as an Angel investor52:10 - Co-investing with First Cheque VC57:47 - Advice to his portfolio companies59:44 - Book recommendations for founders

To say Karuna Rawal has won a lot of awards is an understatement, and she brings to our conversation today a well-rounded view of why Adweek named her the 2021 Trailblazer Working Mom of the Year. I am always curious what it takes as a woman to artfully achieve leadership while simultaneously raising kids. If you think motherhood will hold you back, guess again. In 2019, Karuna was recognized as one of Forbes CMO NEXT 2019 50 Game-changing Marketing leaders who are re-defining the CMO role. In 2015 she won 14 Lions at Cannes Festival  including the coveted Titanium Lion, an inaugural Glass Lion for promoting gender equality and an Emmy for Outstanding Television as the  lead strategist on the wildly successful P&G Always #LikeAGirl campaign.  Currently, she is the Chief Marketing Officer for Nature's Fynd, a food-tech startup where she is commercializing a new-to-the-world sustainable alternative protein that can help feed the world.    Originally born in New Deli, India where her dad worked for the Indian government, Karuna moved to Egypt as a young girl,  and then lived all over the world which is how she learned to adapt. Her grandfather had a house near a famous beach in India called Elliot Beach that she would walk to, and was tickled to read that Kamala Harris also had walked on that same  beach near her own grandfather's house!    When Karuna became a brand manager for the first time, she got pregnant and there were not many women successful at juggling both career and parenthood. Still, she raised her kids through her entire ascent in business and leadership. While she credits her success to adaptability, pivoting, and supportive bosses, she emphasizes building a really strong team, both at home and at work.  Balancing priorities has also been key to her ability to expand in her career.  She has learned, don't look back at a day but at the month.  Everything may not be perfect, but looking back, she strove to evaluate without carrying any guilt. We don't have time as women to be in guilt!   When I asked her what is the next glass ceiling women have to break, she said, women of color are not in enough leadership positions or in business.   How do you bring more diverse voices to the table? She even ponders why shouldn't the whole Supreme court be women.   All of the women who are contemplating staying working at home after liking the work life balance in Covid, Karuna worked from home for many many years in her career.  There is a way to make this model work, and moms are incredibly efficient.
