Kris Myers was born on April 5, 1977. Receiving a drum kit at the age of 8, he took an early interest in jazz, rock and punk music. During high school Myers co-started his first musical outfit, a ska/punk band called the Skalawags. The group received a decent amount of success but denied an offer to tour Japan to instead pursue college degrees. Myers attended Elmhurst College from 1995 – 1999 where he was a music major and the drummer in the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Under director Doug Beach, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band played gigs in the U.S. and Internationally at events such as the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jakarta Jazz Festival and the Montreaux Jazz Festival. In 2001 Myers enrolled in DePaul University where he earned his master's degree in jazz drumming and was a member of the Rob Parton Orchestra.  In addition to his involvement in school bands, Myers was playing in festivals with a variety of jazz artists such as Nicholas Payton, Diane Schuur, Randy Brecker, Dennis DiBlasio as well as local musicians Mark Colby and John McLean.  Myers also was a member of Chicago jazz fusion band Kick the Cat.  Myers began playing drums for progressive-rock band Umphrey's McGee in 2003 following the departure of original drummer Mike Mirro. With Myers at the helm, Umphrey's has released ten albums and maintains a rigorous touring schedule of over 100 live shows per year.  Umphrey's has performed at legendary festivals and venues such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Fuji Rock Festival, South by Southwest, Red Rocks, The Ryman Theatre, The Beacon Theatre and more. With Umphrey's, Myers has shared the stage with countless notable musicians such as Buddy Guy, Huey Lewis, Ivan Neville, Les Claypool, Stephen Perkins, Mike Keneally, Joshua Redman, Bela Fleck, Taj Mahal, Victor Wooten, Adrian Belew, Stanley Jordan, Gene Ween, Derek Trucks and Jason Bonham. In 2011 Myers was honored with the title of Best Jam Band Drummer by DRUM Magazine, beating jamband stalwarts such as Butch Trucks (The Allman Brothers) and Jon Fishman (Phish). In 2018, Myers was featured on the cover of Modern Drummer's July issue. Myers placed second in the Experimental Rock category of the publication's “Readers Poll Awards” behind St. Vincent drummer Matt Johnson. In this part one of a massive conversation we take it back to where is all began for Dylan in Long Island, NY the music room in his childhood home, his journey with music that included excelling at recorder in elementary school and eventually gravitating toward guitar. Dylan shares what it's like being a lefty and how that actually helped him learn to play, and how "Reelin' in the Years" by Steely Dan and Jimmy Page are part of the equation that resulted in Dylan getting his first real guitar, a Les Paul. We talk about other musical influences, Suhr guitars and the Jake Blade, winning a Primetime Emmy Award for his insanely creative contribution for Netflix drama thriller Mr. Robot. Then we get all into Eminence Ensemble, their history and Dylan joining the band in 2020. This week on the show, Sara J is joined by drummer Scotty Zwang, who recently sat in with Umphrey's McGee for four songs at the Mishawaka Amphitheatre in Bellvue, CO on September 7th, 2023. Sara and Scotty cover an array of topics throughout their conversation, that begins with Scotty sharing how drumming has been beneficial to his life since the age of nine. Scotty then tells the story of how going to his first jamband show at 15 with his brother to see Soulive, forever changed the music he listened to. Scotty talks about how The New Deal has been a big influence and shares the “full circle” moment when he played two sets with them on JamCruise this past February. Scotty takes Sara J through his resume; Sonic Spank, Greenhouse Lounge, Dopapod, Ghostlight & More! to name a few. The “full circle” theme continues as Scotty takes us back to The Jammys in 2005 where he saw Kris Myers play for the first time, calling the experience a “game changer”, and attributing that moment in helping him take the big leap toward his path of wanting to be a musician. This week on the show, host Sara J chats with Lotus drummer Michael Greenfield fresh off his recent four night run with Umphrey's McGee, where he filled in for their drummer, Kris Myers. Kris Myers began playing drums for progressive-rock band Umphrey's McGee in 2003. Since then, the band has released eleven albums and maintains a rigorous touring schedule of over 100 live shows per year. Umphrey's has performed at legendary festivals and venues such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Fuji Rock Festival, South by Southwest, Red Rocks Amphitheater, The Ryman Theatre, The Beacon Theatre and more. Myers attended Elmhurst College from 1995 – 1999 where he was a music major and the drummer in the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Under director Doug Beach, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band played gigs in the U.S. and Internationally at events such as the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jakarta Jazz Festival and the Montreaux Jazz Festival. Myers has played with a variety of jazz artists such as Nicholas Payton, Diane Schuur, Randy Brecker, Dennis DiBlasio as well as local Chicago musician Mark Colby. In 2001 Myers enrolled in DePaul University where he earned his Master's Degree in Jazz Drumming. Myers works as a studio musician in the Nashville for various projects. He continues to play with musicians such as Mike Keneally, Bill Evans, Jeff Coffin, and Billy Strings on a variety of projects in both the Nashville and Los Angeles area. In this episode, Kris talks about: Getting started around Chicago's network of educators, drum shops, and universities Umphrey's McGee's early jam/funk influences (Galactic, MMW, Lettuce, Bela Fleck etc.) His drumming influences - bringing an adventurous and active drumming presence to Umphrey's Finding a "give and take" band dynamic - giving a band what they need but being allowed to explore and be you Projects outside of Umprhey's he's been involved with along the way Moving from Chicago to LA in 2014, and ultimately settling in Nashville How where you live and whether it suits your personality/priorities is as important as any musical aspect of your life What he sees in the present and future of Nashville
