主播:Meimei(中国)+ Maelle(法国) 音乐:Until I Found you天气转冷,大家都纷纷开始“花样保暖”。 Warming Up in Winter - Daily Life Habits It's a warm and sweet way to welcome the season. 主播Maelle表示hot tea(热茶)、 hot chocolate(热巧克力)和hot chai(印度香料茶)是她的“go-to(首选)”,她总是会go to these things first。 Boil these spices with milk and add black sugar (红糖)。 They love starting “raclette season” (瑞士奶酪火锅季) in winter! Super rich, super warm! It's called “vin chaud” in French. 人们通常会在Christmas markets(圣诞市集)中喝。 03. Heating Traditions - How People Stay Warm at Home That sounds very comfortable and cozy It is a great way to stay warm. 以前人们会将花椒碾碎(grind up),然后再和泥土混在一起(mix it in the mud)抹在墙上。花椒is a warm-natured food (暖性食物) as well.不过主播Maelle表示她还不是很适应(not used to it)桑拿,因为在里面不久就会呼吸困难(can't really stay long and breathe well inside)。04. You Are What You Eat 一方水土养一方人人们冬天的保暖御寒方式(how people warm up in winter)也反映了不同国家和地域的文化及生活方式(culture and lifestyle)的差异。 主播Maelle表示:“The longer she has lived in China (在中国住的越长), the more she starts liking soups and‘热水'。” 无论是烤炉上的水果(a fruit on the grill),还是土豆上的奶酪(cheese on a potato),亦或者是茶里的生姜(ginger in tea)- what matters (真正重要的) is the warmth we bring into our lives.冬天来了,大家要多多保暖,也可以试着做一做我们提到的这些food that can keep you warm! What tips do you have to keep warm in the winter season?

01. Athens: the Ancient and Modern World 希腊古今交融之都——雅典主播Maelle一共去了四个不同的地方:Kefalonia island (凯法利尼亚岛), the little town of Fiscardo (菲斯卡多), the capital of the island (岛屿的首都) called Argostoli (阿尔戈斯托利), and Athens (雅典)。 Athens was a huge surprise for her. It wasn't even on her travel list before. 但主播Maelle说:“Once I got there (一到那里), I fell in love with it. The history, the food, the kindness of the people and the ruins (古遗址)! The architecture is breathtaking.”Architecture /ˈɑrkɪˌtektʃər/ n. 建筑Breathtaking /ˈbreθˌteɪkɪŋ/ adj. One part of the trip that really stood out (引人注目的): the connection between the modern city and the ancient past (现代与古代的连接). Acropolis /ə'krɒpəlɪs/ n. 雅典卫城Parthenon /ˈpɑ:θinɔn/ n. It made people feel like time is layered Like we're walking on top of thousands of years of stories. What's even more amazing is how the ancient and modern worlds exist side by side (共存). There's something really humbling (令人肃然起敬) about that. 不管现代社会发展的如何,we're still connected to this deep, ancient past (我们的根都深深的与过去连接). It's quiet, but powerful.02. Greek Food and Island Culture Representative Maelle thought everything was super fresh. Even a simple salad with feta cheese (希腊奶酪) and olives (橄榄) tasted like summer. 除此之外,尤其在Kefalonia(凯法利尼亚)这样的岛屿上还有很多grilled fish and seafood(烤鱼和海鲜)。 Clear blue waters, colorful buildings and cats everywhere... It's the kind of place where you just slow down. Fiscardo (菲斯卡多) was like a postcard (明信片). Because cats in Greece are kind of part of the culture. 它们大部分是strays(流浪猫), but they're well-fed (吃得好的) and respected. People feed them, and they just roam (漫步) freely. 它们几乎已经成为了岛上生活的象征(become almost symbolic of island life)—— calm, independent (独立的),and always lounging (懒洋洋地躺着) in the sun! 在希腊,像Athena(雅典娜)、Apollo(阿波罗)、Hermes(赫米斯)等神话名字常常被用来作为街道的名字。It really gives you the feeling that mythology (神话) is still alive in the city. One place that stood out (引人注目) to Maelle was the Acropolis Museum (卫城博物馆). So when you're up there, you're facing the original temple (真正的神庙) as if you're inside it. It is really well thought out (这是很巧妙的构思). The fun fact is that the museum is also at the center of a big controversy (争议、有争议的话题) - the Elgin Marbles (“埃尔金大理石雕塑”或“帕特农神庙雕塑”). What is the Elgin Marbles controversy?“埃尔金大理石雕塑”争议的核心是什么? 所以现在大英博物馆还存有Greek sculptures(希腊雕塑)。When you go to the Acropolis Museum (雅典卫城博物馆), you can actually see the original spaces left empty (原来的位置是空的). It really adds another layer (增加了另外一层内容) to the experience. Greece is like a real-life (现实中的) storybook. (Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war)。Athena /əˈθinə/ n. 她献上象征和平与繁荣(peace and prosperity)的橄榄树(olive tree),最终赢得了民众的拥戴——雅典由此得名(how Athens got its name)! 主播Maelle的希腊之旅wasn't just a vacation - it was a discovery (探索). It reminded (提醒) us how travel opens your heart and mind. Have you had any really amazing or incredible travel experiences?

Hosts' Feeling on Returning Home 主播回国后的感受主播Meimei在美国留学6年,她觉得回国后适应的过程很棒,but there are also struggles, too(但也有一些需要努力的地方)。 像“U-turn”这个词,she just couldn't find the word“掉头”来表示。主播Maelle也有同感,特别是当她需要switch (切换) between French, English and Chinese的时候,it's like the brain's stuck in translation(在语言转换之间卡住了)。 从另一个文化回到自己的本国文化中,language is definitely one of those first big challenges (语言无疑是最初的重大挑战之一)。02. What Is Reverse Culture Shock? 海归或者留学生们回家后,that's so special reuniting (重聚) with people you love! Sometimes with family and friends you haven't seen for a long time, it feels like nothing has changed (感觉什么都没有改变) - and yet, everything has changed (一切又变了). But at the same time, people are also at completely different life stages now (完全不同的人生阶段). Where you were, where you are now, how your experiences have shaped you (塑造自己). Through seeing people who knew you well back (曾经最了解你的人), it makes you realize (意识到) how much you have changed! And differences can be good (差异自有其价值), the uncomfortable feeling sometimes can be a reverse culture shock (反向文化冲击). 03. Home as a Fluid Concept Maelle has traveled to so many countries. Where do you consider home now (你现在认为家在哪里)? 对于主播Maelle来说,this is a question with a not so simple answer (不是那么容易回答)。在三种文化背景下长大,speak English at school, French at home, and surrounded (围绕) by Chinese culture every day, 主播Maelle认为she is a TCK, and the world is her home. Someone who grows up in a culture that's different from their parents' culture, usually due to (一般是由于) moving abroad during childhood. So your identity (身份) is formed through a mix of cultures (由多种文化的融合而形成的).主播Maelle表示:“When I moved to France for university, I felt like an outsider (局外人) there too. I looked like I belonged (归属), but I didn't feel fully French in the way people expected (期待的). After living in Spain, Australia, and Hong Kong, 主播Maelle表示home is not just one place. 确实如此,home is a fluid concept (家是具有流动性的)。 It is the people, not the place that makes us feel at home. 04. Beyond Comfort: The Growth in the Culture The restlessness craves for movement and new experiences. In English, we say “step out of your comfort zone (走出舒适区)”. It's risky (冒险的), but exciting and so rewarding (很值得的).Stepping out: 走出去;跳脱。Comfort zone: 舒适区。It is such a blessing (何其有幸) to feel at home in many places. To keep moving, growing. And take risks (敢于冒险), meet new people, experience new cultures, learn new languages and build a life somewhere so different from what we know (在与我们熟知的世界截然不同的地方,再次塑造自己的生活). It is so exciting! And of course sometimes it's also uncomfortable, but that's where the real growth happens. 比如在完全陌生的城市,navigating (导航探路) unfamiliar streets, learning to express yourself in another language, or sharing meals with people from completely different backgrounds. They open our minds and stretch our hearts It is not always easy of course, but it truly teaches us so much about the world and ourselves. 欢迎留言告诉我们:你是否也经历过这样的“反向文化冲击”呢?Have you experienced “reverse culture shock” like this as well?

主播:Meimei(中国)+ Kevin(美国) 音乐:September最近几年,一项“复古风”运动在美国掀起热潮——它就是pickleball(匹克球)。 01. Pickleball: The New Trend in Hybrid Sports 匹克球:融合运动的新风潮 What exactly is pickleball?简单来说,匹克球是融合(mix)了网球(tennis)、羽毛球(badminton)和乒乓球的一种球类,上手难度低,you can get the hang of it(新手也能快速找到手感)。 It's a plastic paddle (塑料球拍), and the paddle size is way smaller than a tennis paddle (球拍尺寸比网球拍小).用的是带孔的塑料球(a plastic ball with holes)。Because of the plastic material (塑料材质), pickleball doesn't bounce that far like tennis. That's why it's usually on a smaller court (场地更小).It has two core advantages (核心优势):Not too physically demanding (体能要求不是很高)Super social (社交性很强)所以,pickleball真的是一项对老年人也很友好的运动了。 别以为它是一项很niche(小众)的运动,you can always see people from different age groups playing pickleball——目前在全美有超过3600万人的参与度。Even NBA superstar LeBron James (勒布朗·詹姆斯) invested (投资) in professional (专业的) pickleball leagues (联赛).On TikTok, the hashtag (标签) #pickleball has almost 1 billion views (10亿播放量). It's gone mainstream (主流).02. Why Is Pickleball So Addictive? At first, Kevin thought, “This is just a silly backyard (后院) game for kids or retirees (退休人群).” 主播Kevin向大家分享自己的糗事:He once got destroyed (被打败) by his parents while playing, and it made him question his life choices (怀疑人生)! So that's it. “A lot of older people are crazy good at pickleball.” Why do Americans love it even more than tennis? Because it has some clear advantages.Lower cost (成本低)Smaller courts (场地小)Easier to pick it up (易上手)Incredibly social (社交性强)Most important of all - Americans love trends (潮流、趋势). 从之前的冰桶挑战(Ice Bucket Challenge)、拼字游戏(Wordle),再到现在的pickleball,美国人在面对全民性热点时,往往倾向于跟随潮流,主动融入其中(it's all about hopping on the bandwagon)。Bandwagon(读音/ˈbændwægən/)字面意思是“乐队花车”。 03. Can Pickleball Become Popular in China? That's why frisbee (飞盘) and pickleball blow up (流行) there.国人往往更倾向于专业性(technical skill)和竞技性(competitiveness)更高的运动,like badminton and ping pong。 Would you try pickleball? What's your opinion on this sport?

ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT. Am Mikrofon mit dem ersten Eindruck: Johanna und Thomas.

During those three days, Bella went from a happy, bubbly baby to alternately crying hysterically and becoming quiet and withdrawn. Then her parents noticed a distinctive pinching bruise on Bella's thigh. An investigation turned up hours of CCTV footage from inside the daycare, showing three workers abusing the baby, including pinching, shoving, crushing, slapping, shaking, and smothering her.Bella's parents, JD and Kaitlin Kuykendall, assumed their baby's abusers would immediately face consequences, but instead, officials seemed hell-bent on sweeping the incident under the rug. The daycare workers responsible remained working at the CDC for months. Only when Bella's parents went public with her story were any charges pressed, and those were woefully inadequate. In this episode, you'll hear my conversation with Kaitlin Kuykendall about what Bella endured, how it continues to affect her to this day, and why Kaitlin and her husband went public with her story. This is the inspiring story of Operation Mei Mei.Operation Mei Mei on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61573058332219Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. By supporting me on Patreon, you'll also access rewards, including a shout-out by name on the podcast and exclusive rewards. We talk about knowing who you are as a destination, being true to your strengths, and why honoring history, culture, and people is a must for tourism leaders. Rosa also shares examples of several Cayman Island campaigns and how her tourism brand partners with lifestyle brands. What You Will Learn in This Episode: How the “Dreaming Cayman” campaign aims to stand out in the Caribbean market to attract the family market's interest Partnerships the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism is involved in including collaborations with luxury brands like Saks Fifth Avenue and influencers like Mei Mei Why agile and flexible leadership is important as a leader in the tourism industry Why the Cayman Islands is focusing on becoming the go-to destination for luxury experiences in the Caribbean. How community involvement contributes to authentic cultural experiences and effective marketing strategies for the Cayman Islands. Showcasing Authentic Cultural Heritage An integral part of distinguishing the Cayman Islands is its commitment to offering tourists an authentic cultural experience. Rosa shares details of the collaborations with local artisans and highlights initiatives like the Caymankind campaign, which embodies the warm and welcoming hospitality of the Cayman people. Rosa and her team held town halls to invite public input, helping ensure the community's voice was clearly heard in branding efforts. Local tourism operators also played a pivotal role by having conversations with visitors. These initiatives ensured that the brand promise aligned seamlessly with the actual visitor experience, creating a cultural connection that left a lasting impression. Strengthening Community and Collaboration Rosa highlights her role with the Caribbean Tourism Organization, focusing on coopetition and shares examples such as partnership with the aviation committee, working towards enhancing travel options within the Caribbean to promote multi-destination travel. This boosts tourist experiences but also extends visitors' stays in the Caribbean. Rosa also introduces the “Dreaming Cayman” campaign, an initiative that aims to help the Cayman Islands stand out among Caribbean destinations with nature imagery. In a crowded market commonly showcasing sun, sand, and sea imagery, the Cayman Islands are carving a niche with unique, eye-catching campaigns. Targeted primarily at the family market, the campaign's objective is to evoke a sense of wonder and curiosity, drawing attention to the Cayman Islands as a luxurious yet intriguing destination. Future-Proofing Through Creative Partnerships Looking ahead, Rosa discussed exciting partnerships to further enhance the Cayman Islands' appeal. A significant collaboration with Saks Fifth Avenue during New York Fashion Week will feature Cayman Islands-themed window displays, showcasing the destination's unique charm to a broad audience. Meanwhile, a partnership with Gen Z influencer Mei Mei will capture authentic Cayman experiences via TikTok, engaging a younger audience through contemporary social media platforms. Mei Mei Hu, the CEO and Co-Founder of Vaxxinity, focuses on an approach to vaccines that aims to break immune tolerance to get the body to produce the antibodies to target self-antigens causing chronic conditions. Initial trials are being conducted to slow the progression or prevent the onset of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and hypercholesterolemia. Motivating this effort is the desire to democratize health and make transformative medicines available to a larger population at a lower cost.   Mei Mei explains, "Interestingly, in 1900, the average global life expectancy was 32. Today, when you hear someone died at 79, you're like, oh my gosh, what happened? We get these two bonus lifetimes now, and those three lives total for three main reasons. The first is the Green Revolution feeding us all. The second is hygienic plumbing, and the third is vaccines. But when we think of vaccines, they're usually crying babies or kids pre-COVID. What they did was able to banish the biggest diseases of our early lives." "What we're looking to do now at Vaxxinity is do the same thing but for the diseases plaguing us in our second and third lives. That's why we go after things like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, hypercholesterolemia, which is a leading cause of heart disease. We're going after big population health things, and the best way to do them is with a vaccine approach." "One of the main attributes of a vaccine is that it trains your body to attack pathogens or causes of disease. In our case, we're just teaching your body to produce drugs that help neutralize things like cholesterol, plaques, or CGRP, which is the culprit of migraines. Next-Generation Vaccines Breaking Immune Tolerance to Slow Progression or Prevent Onset of Chronic Conditions with Mei Mei Hu Vaxxinity TRANSCRIPT

That's what we mean when we talk about creating a vaccine for a chronic condition."  #Vaxxinity #Vaccine #Parkinsons #Alzheimers #ChronicDiseases #ClinicalTrials #DemocratizeHealth vaxxinity.com Listen to the podcast here

There's big money to be make in drug development. But is that necessarily a good thing? Pharmaceutical companies capitalize on years of R&D work with exclusive patents. Approved drugs typically commercialize in developed markets that can support higher pricing through mature insurance reimbursement networks. Yet serious diseases don't only occur in the developed world. Billions of people in developing economics need treatments as well. And they're often not able to afford the hundreds of thousands of dollars it costs for innovative approaches such as CRISPR gene editing or CAR-T gene therapy. There's currently an unmet market need for treating serious chronic conditions like Alzheimer's Disease in a way that isn't prohibitively expensive. And sometimes, it's worth veering from the herd and thinking about big problems in an entirely new way. In today's 7investing podcast, 7investing lead advisors Simon Erickson and Dana Abramovitz chat with Mei Mei Hu, the co-founder and CEO of Vaxxinity (Nasdaq: VAXX). Vaxxinity is using a disruptive synthetic peptide platform to provide cheaper, safer, more convenient, and more effective medicines for chronic diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease. It is also developing a late-stage vaccines for the prevention of COVID. In the conversation, Mei Mei describes how Vaxxinity's technology is "turning the human body into its own drug factory" to avoid the excessive costs and immune response issues of traditional monoclonal antibodies. She discusses their unique approach to clinical trials, the progress their making in their programs, and what it's like to be the CEO of a newly-public company. When Chef Irene Li opened a food truck, mei mei, with her siblings, hoping to have fun together, build something cool, and reimagine Chinese comfort cuisine with a playful, modern twist, what happened next took everyone by surprise. Mei Mei exploded, becoming the talk of the town within months. They soon found themselves looking for space and opening a full-service restaurant that was perpetually abuzz. The restaurant was a big success. But, beyond the chance to do something cool with her brother and sister, and push the culinary envelope, there was something else going on.Growing up, Irene's grandparents immigrated to the US and slowly built up their own restaurants. While her brother had been in fine dining for years, she'd developed a deep passion not just for food, but also for the environment, viewing agriculture, the food and restaurant industry as a potential vehicle to change people's lives, to completely upend the way restaurants run, and weave in a powerful thru line of social justice, advocacy and impact. And, of course, fun and love. As mei mei took off, Irene and the restaurant landed features everywhere from Food & Wine and The New York Times to People, Bon Appetit and more. Irene gained acclaim for her creativity and innovation, being named a Zagat 30 Under 30 and Forbes 30 Under 30 winner, six-time James Beard Foundation Rising Star Chef nominee, and James Beard Foundation Leadership Award winner. Her cookbook is Double Awesome Chinese Food: Irresistible and Totally Achievable Recipes from Our Chinese-American Kitchen.Like many restaurants, though, the pandemic was a brutal experience, the restaurant space eventually closed its doors, but mei mei - the creative, joyful food innovator brand - transformed itself into a next-generation direct-to-consumer and wholesale food manufacturer, focusing on their signature dumplings, with a heartbeat that remains deeply rooted in industry reform and social justice.
