Today, we explore the quiet, often hidden, struggle of doubt – the common dilemma we face when trusting God feels nearly impossible. Like Thomas, who needed to see and touch before he could believe, many of us wrestle with uncertainty, unanswered prayers, and the silence of God. But doubt isn't the end of the story. John 20

Last week was Easter — but the story isn't over. For resurrection people, Easter never ends. After the crowds thin and the music fades, a quieter question remains: Is it still true? Is resurrection still real… even now? Like Thomas, we find ourselves reaching out — hoping to touch what our hearts dare to believe. Acts 5:27–32 | Revelation 1:4–8 | John 20:19–31

2025-04-06: Thomas was one of the twelve disciples who followed Jesus very closely. We best know him as “Doubting Thomas.” This is a harsh nickname and probably the wrong one. It was not doubt driving Thomas, but his disappointment when his expectations of God did not match his current reality. Like Thomas, we've most likely experienced disappointment that has resulted in doubt. Is God really who he says he is? Why did God allow this to happen? Are you even there, God? Can we, like Thomas, sincerely ask to encounter Jesus together in community?

Through Thomas' journey, we'll learn that doubt can be a catalyst for spiritual growth rather than a barrier to faith. Like Thomas, we may need to wait and wrestle with our doubts, allowing our roots to grow deep in Christ. Ultimately, Jesus leads us from uncertainty to a deeper, more vibrant faith in Him.

Acts 4:32-35Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. With great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. They laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.John 20:19-31When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors on the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” When he said this, he showed them his hands and his sides, and the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. He said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so now I send you.” And after he said this, he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any they are forgiven them. If you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”Now, Thomas (who was called “the Twin”) one of the twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus appeared. So the disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But Thomas said to them, “Unless I see the marks of the nails in his hands, and put my fingers in the marks of the nails, and my hands in his side, I will not believe.”A week later, the disciples were again in the house and this time, Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your fingers here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt, but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” And Jesus said to him, “Do you believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.”Now, Jesus did many other signs which are not written in this book, but these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you might have life in his name. If I were to meet Thomas today, I would ask him, which would have been harder for him to believe: What we heard about in this Gospel reading from John or what took place in that reading, later in Acts, Chapter 4.In John's Gospel, immediately following Easter's resurrection, we hear the familiar story about the unfairly infamous “Doubting Thomas” with all of that heavy breathing, behind the locked doors of that hideout of a house. There are Jesus' holey hands and scarred sides. There are those commands to be sent into the world with the authority to forgive the sins of others, at their discretion. And there's that invitation to “not doubt, but believe.” That's a whole lot of hard, holy stuff to take in, to buy, and to make sense of.But it's at least as easy to believe, if you ask me, as what happens later in Acts. Did you hear it? Were you paying attention? Did you consider it with at least as much seriousness as Easter's good news and Thomas' doubts? First, it's worth knowing that “the whole group who believed” as we hear about in Acts, was bigger than just the handful of disciples who saw Jesus in that house with Thomas on Easter Sunday. By the time we get to that Acts reading, thousands had been baptized and had come to believe; believers and followers were being added to the mix every day. And this is what we're told:- The whole group of those thousands who believed were of one heart and soul. (How could that be?)- And not one of them claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. (Can you imagine?)- There was not a needy person among them, as the story goes. They sold their land and houses, and laid the proceeds of it at the feet of the apostles' to be handed out, as any had need, no strings attached. (Call me “Thomas.” I'd need to see it, for myself, to believe it.)Because that sounds like a cult to me. Or socialism, God forbid. Nothing most of us – and the culture surrounding us – are willing to believe or buy into, practice or propagate as faithful capitalists. But there it is, in black and white, lifted up as a model for faithful living, right there in the Word of God.And it makes me wonder if people in the world might have an easier time believing the former – the Gospel good news that the love of God, in Jesus, was more powerful, even, than death – if they could see and experience the latter, from his followers like you and me – that kind of radical, selfless, sacrificial, generosity – I mean. And that's a question we're called to ponder, still.…We were blessed enough to have celebrated a couple of baptisms the last couple of weeks here, in worship – one, each, on Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, too. Depending on which service you attended, you may or may not have known that. And, as is customary at Cross of Grace, especially when the family of the baptized and/or a sanctuary full of people who don't usually attend Cross of Grace – or church, generally, for that matter, as is customary on a typical Easter Sunday – we make a deliberate effort at explaining ourselves. What I mean is, we baptize at the back, by the door. We move the baptismal bowl. We encourage everyone to stand and turn to see it. And we explain our reasoning for that is two-fold. First, because baptism is a sign of our invitation, welcome and entry to the Church on this side of heaven. And it's also a sign of our promised welcome into God's heaven, on the other side of eternity. Hence, the doors. And the second reason we turn our attention to the back, is to show that the kind of grace we celebrate, pour out, and promise to one another by way of Holy Baptism, is meant to turn us around, quite literally, in as many ways as we'll allow that to happen. It's meant to change us, utterly. God's love is meant to inspire and transform the way we live and move and breathe in the world – here and now, on this side of heaven, in great gratitude for God's love in our lives and for the sake of the world.…That's what the good news of Easter's grace and love and new life was doing in that room with Thomas and those first disciples – everything was changed and changing. And that's what the good news of Easter's grace and love and new life was doing in the lives of those followers in Acts, just the same – everything was changed and changing, still, for those who wanted in on the action, too. They were so captivated by who they now knew Jesus to be – the Messiah, the Son of God – that they let that good news have its way with every part of their life, as individuals and as a community of faith. They devoted themselves to each other in prayer, fellowship, teaching, worship … and in sharing their money for the good of the cause, too. …Several weeks ago, before we got knee deep into the season of Lent, in preparation for Easter, we engaged some wonderful Holy Conversations as a congregation. Those conversations were about a lot of things – what we've been up to as a family of faith, what we hope to see happen around here in the future, and how we plan to make that happen. And we have some big dreams brewing among us. We heard about building projects, expanding our food pantry ministry, growing our influence in social justice efforts, adding programming for kids and youth, and more. And we'd like to continue those conversations now that we've made it to the other side of Easter. Not in the same way. We won't be hosting special events, happy hours, or luncheons and whatnot, like we did for those Holy Conversations. But we're gearing up to make our General Fund financial commitments in early May, and we want to pray and prepare for that in the context of worship, learning, and service on the other side of the empty tomb – like Thomas and the first disciples; like the apostles and the throngs of the faithful, changed by Easter's good news and wanting to change the world with the same kind of grace, generosity, love, mercy and forgiveness they had experienced, in Jesus. That's God's call and my hope for all of us, every day that we live on the other side of Easter – that we'll be so captivated by the grace and blessing of God's love for the world, that we'll return the favor as much as we're able by sharing ourselves and our resources for the sake of what's so unique about the ministry we share in this place, for the sake of the communities we serve. And our ministry is uniquely beautiful as far as churches go in our community. I'm talking about our wide, sincere welcome of all people – and especially the LGBTQ neighbors among us. And I'm talking about our food pantry, our teaching about and our doing of justice for those others ignore, and our generosity when we get it right. (We have 25 grant applications to review for the $50,000 we get to give away from our Building and Outreach Fund.)…After that baptism on Palm Sunday, one of the family members of the newly baptized little boy came looking for me to very deliberately thank me for whatever I had preached that day and, generally, for the spirit of welcome and grace and whatever else he felt by being here. He lives out west, so won't be back anytime soon, but he could see and feel something different about this placed than is true in so many other churches out there in the world. You all deserve to know that just as much as I do.…Like Thomas, sometimes you just have to see and experience it to believe it. So, I'm praying we're all paying attention. And, like the early Church in Acts – growing and giving and sharing their resources and themselves – I'm hopeful we'll all get in on the action in the days ahead, because I know others will be drawn to and inspired by what we're up to when they see and experience the kind of grace we proclaim, right along with us, just the same.Amen

On this Easter Sunday, Pastora Susan Evangelista powerfully proclaims the significance of Jesus' resurrection from John 11:25-26 - "I am the resurrection and the life." This foundational truth has profound implications for believers: The Resurrection Guarantees Our Salvation (Matthew 28:1-8) Through Christ's victory over death, we are assured of eternal life. While unbelievers face the second death, believers experience true, resurrected life. The Resurrection Validates Our Faith (John 20:19-29) Like Thomas, we can have confidence that Jesus is the risen Lord, the object of our faith. The Resurrection Ensures Our Hope (John 21, 2 Timothy 2:13) No matter our failures or circumstances, the resurrection gives us lasting hope to face tomorrow, for one day we will see Jesus face to face (1 John 3:2). Yet, as 2 Corinthians 4:7-9 reminds us, we are fragile jars of clay carrying this magnificent treasure - the resurrection power of Christ. Though hard-pressed, perplexed, persecuted, and struck down, we are never crushed, in despair, abandoned or destroyed. Why? Because the all-surpassing power at work within us is from God Himself through the resurrection life of Jesus Christ! On this Easter, let us embrace afresh the power and implications of Christ's resurrection for our salvation, faith, and hope. Don't give up! Christ is risen, and the life that is in Him is an unquenchable, resurrection life available to all believers.

So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” John 20: 25 If there was ever a role play and we were to identify with one of Jesus' disciples, my first option would be Thomas the Twin. I would readily admit my need to see for myself. I am forever in search of the divine in the mundane. So if the subject at hand referred to matters of the Spirit, I would insist on seeing Jesus. Like Thomas, it is not that I do not want to believe. On the contrary, I do; I need to know what I believe in. I was that child who asked tons of questions in class, advocating for seeing things from other angles. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/arnajadi/message

John 14:1-14[Jesus said,] “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me. In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go there to prepare a place for you, I will come again to take you to myself, so that where I am, there you will be also. And you know the way to the place that I am going.”Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father, also. And from now on you do know him and you have seen him.”Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and we will be satisfied.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and still you do not know me? Whoever has seen me, has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father?' Do you not believe that the Father is in me and that I am in the Father? These words that I say to you I do not speak on my own, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and that the Father is in me. But if you do not, believe because of the works themselves.“Very truly I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name so that the Father might be glorified in the Son. If, in my name, you ask for anything, I will do it.” Since it's NBA playoff season, I came across what is apparently a phenomenon in the world of the NBA post-game press conference: dumb questions, asked by sports writers of NBA players, after a game. There are compilations of them all over YouTube, but I found this one – kind of short and sweet – thanks to Jimmy Kimmel. So, we've all heard, I suspect, that “there's no such thing as a dumb question.” I've said it before, in classes and Bible studies and whatnot; to adults and kids; to other people's kids and my own, I'm sure. And it's mostly true. If they are genuine and heartfelt and curious, there really is no such thing as a dumb question. This is the way any good teacher should approach a student; how any mentor should engage a protégé; any guide should embrace a follower; any messiah should encourage a disciple, maybe. But some people – kids and adults alike – and apparently sports writers and reporters after an NBA basketball game – put that notion to the test? (I'm looking at every teacher who's ever had a Class Clown in their midst. And anyone who's ever been the Class Clown, too.) There really can be dumb questions waiting to surprise even the most patient teacher or player among us.Anyway, I kind of wonder if Jesus wasn't thinking something along these lines when he was being questioned by Thomas and Phillip in this morning's Gospel. I'm not sure you could call them “Class Clowns,” but Jesus seems sort of surprised, if not exasperated … maybe even disappointed … by their questions.Jesus offers up what seems to be a preconceived notion, a no brainer, something he expected they would have understood. He's like, “And you know the way to the place where I am going.” But Thomas gives us our first hint about his doubting ways when he wants to know more. “Lord, we don't know where you're going. How can we know the way?” He wants a little more clarity, it seems. As is his way.Phillip wants to see something else, too … something more, something different, something better than what he's already witnessed. “Lord, show us the Father and we will be satisfied,” he asks. “Come on Jesus, just show us this ‘Father' you've been praying to and talking about and that'll do it. Just make it clear and we'll know … it'll all make sense … then we'll be satisfied. That will finally make all the difference.”And Jesus is like, “Guys. You've seen it. Don't you know? Remember when I turned that water into wine? Remember when I drank from the well with that woman in Samaria? Remember when I saved the life of that boy who was sick and that time I helped that lame guy walk after 38 years? Remember when I turned that other kid's lunch into a feast for 5,000 people? And when I stood up for that woman who was caught in adultery? When I gave that blind man his sight and raised Lazarus from the dead? Remember when I washed your feet, for crying out loud! Have I been with you all this time, Phillip, and still you don't know me? You still Don't get it? You still don't understand? You still don't see?In Jesus, what had been invisible could now be seen. In Jesus, the power and presence of God showed up living and moving and breathing, in the world. In Jesus the divine who had here-to-for been unknown became knowable. In Jesus, so many of our questions turned into living, moving, breathing answers. And the questions weren't answered by well-crafted sermons, or by theological treatises; by Q & A sessions in between worship services, or with crystal balls, either. Jesus answered the questions of his day and age by all of that living and moving and breathing … by being in the world. I think this is why the disciples didn't always get it and I think it's why we miss the point sometimes, ourselves.Questions about grace were answered when Jesus forgave the unforgivable and welcomed the outsiders others refused to make room for. Questions about mercy were answered when Jesus healed the sick and shared bread with the hungry. Questions about justice were answered when Jesus spoke out against the hypocrites and turned over tables in the temple; when he empowered women, welcomed children into his presence, and when he broke bread with outcasts and sinners.Questions about love were answered by the cross and questions about God's power over all things were answered by the empty tomb. What I get out of today's Gospel – and the questions the disciples raise – is not simple answers, which are always tempting and maybe what we'd prefer. What I get out of this morning's Gospel is a different way of finding answers. Jesus didn't sit around arguing about who might be right and who might be wrong. He didn't debate the theological merits of the questions the disciples were asking. And Jesus didn't shout the answers or scream the instructions IN. ALL. CAPS. from behind a keyboard, by way of a post on social media.Jesus became the lessons his life was meant to teach. He practiced and personified the way, and the truth, and the life of faith everyone wanted to know more about.Jesus didn't just talk about grace – he extended it to anyone and everyone.Jesus didn't just offer up “thoughts and prayers” about justice – he worked for it.Jesus didn't just dream about mercy – he shared it.Jesus didn't just sit in worship or around tables to read and study God's Word for his own benefit – he preached and proclaimed it; he passed it around and poured it out in the form of himself, like so much bread and wine, to whoever would receive it. Jesus didn't just preach about the love of God, I mean. He embodied it.And that's our call, too – for ourselves, for each other, and for the world around us.This morning, we're sharing “first communion” with some of our young people and we're baptizing Clive Blackmon, too. Like Thomas and Phillip, these young people can and should come to us with all kinds of questions about the place and presence and power of God in their lives and in this world. And I hope they will learn from all of us – not just by what we say and teach and preach, even – but by what they see, feel and experience about the lives of faith they witness among us. They will learn about grace by who and how we forgive one another. They will learn about generosity and sacrifice by why and how much we give of our time, our energy and our money, too. They will learn about justice and service by the work we do in the world. They will learn about love by those we welcome among us.And so will we.This can be hard, holy work, for sure. But Jesus promises that we're up for it … that as believers we will do even greater works than his own. And I believe that, along the way, we will reveal and receive answers about our own faith – maybe even the ones we can't always put into words – when we live and move and breathe as the very body of Christ – as the very love of God – as the very presence of the divine – in the world, and for the sake of the world, in the name of Jesus who showed us how to do it all in the first place.Amen

The Village Church - Sermons

The disciple Thomas was a zealous follower of Christ, yet is forever known for his moment of weakness. Right before Jesus commissions His followers, the Word says some still doubted. But Jesus doesn't withhold His mission when His followers doubt. Like Thomas, Christ invites us to move toward Him...

I was so excited, finally the weekend had come when my parents were going to visit us at Living Waters. We hadn't seen them for 3 months, since moving away from the Bay Area. Now everything had changed. Like Thomas had written to his mother, we experienced the miracle of a home birth, and at the same time an even greater miracle, we found the truth. He wrote that God had opened our hearts, to receive the truth of our purpose for living. The absolute truth! In his words in German; Die Wahrheit unseres Seins und Lebens. Die absolute Wahrheit! Thomas had also written his mom, that he was happy that my parents were coming, and that God would reunite our hearts with them. We hoped for a new foundation in our relationship, now that we were also believers. After they unloaded their bags we walked over to our little forest area, unveiling our tipi to them. I think they were pretty impressed to see it, knowing that we actually had made it ourselves, and were now living in it. Now we wanted to start afresh in our relationship with our parents, with them, and his family in Germany. He began saying to mom and dad, that he was sorry for all the trouble that he had caused them the past year. He said he knew now, that we had been deceived by the teachings of the Eastern Religions, and that he had not been open to listen to my dad's warnings, or advice. He asked them for forgiveness, for everything that he had done, especially that we ended up in jail. He thanked my dad, for bailing us out of the mess, and paying for a lawyer.

Today's Reading: John 14:1-14Daily Lectionary: Exodus 33:1-23; Luke 7:1-17 "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it." (John 14:12-14) In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. We always have a tendency to want the full road map of the future. We all crave certainty and understanding. Jesus says we crave that too much. He reminds us that He is sufficient. He is the Way, after all. "I'm not showing you the way, I am the way," Jesus says. "Believe in the Father and believe also in me, and this ought to be enough that your hearts will not be troubled."But questions continue, and that is why we celebrate the Lord's work though Philip and James. They were not ones who are seen as great and mighty heroes of the Christian faith. Like Thomas, Philip questioned the path and the destination. Philip said to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father'?" It's never quite enough for us, is it? Even when Jesus comforts us and shows undying sacrificial love for us, we still want something a little more. The early 2020s have reminded us that we can't anticipate more and that no one has a clear picture of the future. No one can tell us what the world will look like 72 hours from now let alone six months or six years from now. The urge to know what lies ahead of us is understandable. We all want to plan, prepare and be ready. Yet Christ assures us of our greater home, the heavenly place prepared for us already. We will not be able to understand or anticipate every single twist and turn here on earth, and yet His assurance remains: "Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me." And this is enough. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, because of Your tender love towards sinners You have given us Your Son, that believing in Him, we might have everlasting life. Continue to grant to us Your Holy Spirit that we may remain steadfast in this faith to the end and finally come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. In the New Science of Physical Health, the goal is simple - how do we bring two groups together. Those people that are completely disengages with their personal physical health status, and those that are already in love with improving their personal physical health status? The first group is the overwhelming majority. It's up to the second group to help inspire all of those who have not yet lowered their risk of disease so they can feel amazing. To access the Health Coaching Lab, click this link and enter your details.https://forms.gle/GPCTzddz56rekF5FAIn todays episode:DECIPHER THE HEALTH CODE IN THE AGE OF NETFLIX, UBER, GOOGLE AND SCREENS  What to do between 2020-2070 to stay physically healthy as the world changes more than it did over the past 1000 years. What if I could show you there is just one brand new medical discovery that if you took advantage of it, there would be a linear decrease in your risk from sickness, disease and premature death? I am about to share the exact formula on how to stay physically healthy over the next 50 years in the age of Netflix, Uber, Google and screens.  I have spent the past 34 years of teaching health and physical education where I delivered over 30,000 lessons to students. The last decade of my career has been working with over 100 PhDs in medicine, cardiology, oncology, exercise physiology, molecular biology, pediatrics, pedagogy, public health, endocrinology and many more - where  I have been able to turn their complex medical research into simple lessons we all can use. Heart attack, stroke, diabetes (type2), cancer events, metabolic disease, obesity, high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, end stage organ failure, insulin resistance, cardiac hypertrophy, myocardial fibrosis, endothelial dysfunction, pulse wave velocity, vagal tone, nitric oxide release, platelet adhesiveness, electrophysical properties, stroke volume, and much more. These are part of the HEALTH CODE. This complex molecular and physiological world that most people don't know exists - until they are forced to learn about a part of it when a health catastrophe explodes inside their body or that of someone they love. When my father died aged just 46 years old from a heart attack on the spot - we were told that it was ‘sudden' and ‘unexpected'. The truth is he never knew about the HEALTH CODE. His disease and premature death were sudden to us his family, yet in reality it was anything but sudden. But you need to know about the HEALTH CODE, the complex molecular and physiological changes that begin 20 years before you can feel the outcome of a disease like a heart attack. Deciphering the HEALTH CODE means to prevent negative molecular and physiological health adaptations starting inside your body (or that of someone you care about)in your teenage years or 20's - then when you move to your 30's, 40's, 50s, 60's or beyond you are N0T staring down the barrel of a health catastrophe. If you fail to decipher the health code, you will be in the direct firing line of being diagnosed with the two leading causes of sickness, disease and premature death. These are cardiovascular and cancer events. To access the six courses please click this link.https://newscience.podia.com/the-experts-health-blueprint-full-course

To Touch or Not to Touch± There is an interesting dynamic in the Gospel of John when Jesus appears to Mary and later to Thomas (John 20:17, 27).° Mary is not to hold on to Jesus.° Thomas is invited to touch the wounds of Jesus. ± In the healing work of Jesus, there is a time to listen and there is a time to touch. Pondering the Wounds of Christ“He showed them his hands and feet” – Luke 24:40± What is to be seen in the wounds on his hands and feet?± What influence did the exhibit of the hands and feet have upon the disciples?± Why is it that Jesus Christ still bears the scars in his flesh?· Was it to simply establish his identity, that he was the very same Jesus whom they had followed?· Why should Christ wear these wounds in heaven and of what avail are they?· Are they the ultimate proof of His love for mankind? Your Pain is Real± Joy and pain aren’t enemies. They’re companions. The highs and lows of life often dance together. ° Pain is real.° The wounds produce scars.° They will always be there, no matter how much the wounds might heal. ° Pain reminds us that hope brings a longing for what isn't healed yet. ± Looking for Jesus in the pain° Where is Jesus in the pain?° Pain often hides the presence of Jesus in the middle of the circumstances. The Use of the Imagination± The imagination is a place where we can attune our hearts to the deepest realities of our lives with God. ° In the Christian tradition, there is a set of resources popularized by St. Ignatius of Loyola, who founded the Jesuit order. ± Ignatian contemplation encourages readers to step into the biblical story and imagine the scene in our hearts and mind. ± Sometimes you might find yourself relating to a character in the story; at other times perhaps, you are one watching in the crowd.° We must compose the place inviting God to breathe fresh insights into our souls.± God may invite you to remember something that consoles or delights you. What is God saying through those consoling memories?± Sometimes the memory explores hurts. When Jesus is Missing± The moment when Jesus went missing in the gospel accounts is perplexing to the people involved.° When people like Mary and others mourning the death of Jesus – the despair was real. ± On top of the emotional loss, the body of Jesus went missing too (John 20:1).± Was the body stolen? Why?± Mary’s despair was beyond repair. The empty tomb brought reverberating dread.° Then the hiddenness of Christ is disguised as a gardener (John 20:13)± She doesn’t come to realize his presence until she recognizes his voice. ° Jesus tells her not to touch him. Why? The Gift of Thomas± Later in the same chapter, we encounter another disciple of Jesus, Thomas (John 20:24-29).° At this point, all the close disciples had seen him except for Thomas.° Thomas needed to see Jesus’s scars.± Thomas helps us see Jesus’s marks on his hands and sides are necessary for healing.° If he could see them, then a great hope might be true: even our pain is redeemable by God.° Thomas wanted to know whether the pain that thrusts itself at us – the grave disappointments – is redeemable so he had to touch the wounds. To Touch or Not to Touch± When it comes to deep hurts, it is difficult to pinpoint where Jesus fits into all of it.° Like Mary, could you be truly seeking Jesus and feel surprised where you expect him to be?° Like Thomas, do you need something experiential to break through the pain, to remind you that God is still on the move to bring healing and hope?± Sometimes we can’t find Jesus in the emptiness. We want to touch him and want him to touch us. ± Sometimes we are afraid to touch the wounds. We don’t want to feel the pain again. Stepping into pain with open eyes us one of the hardest things we can do.

Understand this while on earth our purpose is tied up in our physical and spiritual resurrection.  When we accept Christ as our Lord and Saviour, we become born again, the old us dies and a new us is resurrected. Remember I told you that the Kingdom of God is the highest government in existence and the only one that reaches beyond the grave, when we die our spirit is resurrected and will go before the King of Kings on judgment day, where our eternal destination is then determined based on what we did after our physical and spiritual resurrection on this earth. The account of Jesus after His resurrection can help to guide us on how we conduct our lives as born-again believers, resurrected in and for the Kingdom of God.Again every aspect of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection is for us to see His glory and learn from it.  Just as learning with the inability to apply what you have learned is worthless, so is our acknowledgment of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ without the proper adjustments made in our lives, hypocrisy. In closing let's review what Jesus did after His resurrection and reflect on what should be our actions and reactions after we have been born again and resurrected as citizens of the Kingdom of God.Scripture tells us that John 20 that Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and began to weep because she saw that Jesus wasn't there and she assumed they had moved him to an undisclosed location.  When she turned around Jesus was standing there and said to her, “Woman why are you weeping”, He went on to say “do not cling to me'' as Mary was wanting to hold onto his physical presence.I need to say this to some of you after you have been born again and resurrected as a citizen of the Kingdom of God there are going to be some friends, family, and associates who are going to want to cling to the old you.But as Jesus continued in his explanation to Mary “I am ascending to My father and your father and to My God and your God”.  For those who are trying to cling to who you were before, it's going to take you proclaiming boldly that you have been resurrected as a new you and are now connected to your father, your God, and committed and submitted to his Kingship. When Jesus appeared to the other disciples, Thomas was not present, when the disciples told Thomas they had seen the resurrected Christ, Thomas said he would not believe unless he saw for himself the nail-scarred hands, and was able to put his hands into His side, he would not believe Jesus had resurrected.Like Thomas there will always be folks who will doubt your resurrection and transformation, who will doubt your commitment to sacrifice your fleshly desires for the Kingdom, they will doubt that the old you is truly dead and they will challenge you, test and tempt you.  But know this,  when they see the evidence of the death of your old self and the resurrection of the new you, it will be the scars from the old you and your commitment to God that will be able to be used as a vessel to draw to the Kingdom of God.And finally, In John 21 Jesus appears to the disciples on the lake and instructs them to cast their nets to the other side of the boat and there they caught an abundance of fish.  Jesus then told them to come onshore and to bring the fish they had caught.  He then invited them to eat with him.As born-again believers, resurrected in the glory of God, we should also seek to steer people in the right direction, to be a blessing to them, befriend and commune with them. The principle of Jesus' resurrection is rooted in sacrifice, servanthood, and sanctification.  We are all destined for resurrection in our lives, and each of us determines whether we receive the “well done” approval seal of God by first accepting Christ in our lives, then allowing the old us to die, as the new us, resurrects as a citizen of the Kingdom of God, w

When Christ appeared to Thomas and invited him to see and touch His wounds, Thomas proclaimed, "My Lord and my God!" Today our doubts are cured through the reading of God's Word (John 20:31). When I think about doubt, my mind wanders to one of the disciples of Jesus. His name was Thomas. For 2,000 years he has been nicknamed “Doubting Thomas.”  We find the story in John 20. Jesus has been crucified. His 12 disciples are in hiding.  The doors are locked.  The resurrected Jesus had already appeared to his disciples.  But, you know, it doesn't hurt to lock the doors!  We learn something interesting about Thomas. He wasn't with the disciples the first time Jesus appeared to them proving his resurrection.  They tell Thomas what had happened and he makes his famous statement, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.”A week later Jesus appeared to the disciples again and this time Thomas was with them.  Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands.  Reach out your hand and put it into my side,  Stop doubting and believe.”  Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God.”Like Thomas, all of us have times when we doubt God in some way.  •Some of us question whether God would love and accept us.•Some of us question whether the Bible can be completely trusted•Sometimes we doubt because we can't reconcile the world's suffering with a loving God.•Some struggle because in all of our difficulty and discouragement we can't see God.Here's what we need to understand:•Our faith is stronger because we have dealt with our doubts.•Tested faith is the strongest kind of faith•You will go through periods in your life where you will ask, “God, are you there?”  “God, are you going to answer my prayer?”  “God why is this happening in my life?”•But as you sort through these things, as you investigate, your faith becomes stronger. So, what should we do with our doubts?1. Identify your doubts - When we get specific about our doubts that's when God will help us work through them.  When I get specific about my doubts, I can look for answers in God's Word.  I can talk with trusted friends.  I can read helpful books.  And most of my questions are answered.C.S Lewis once wrote, “If ours is an examined faith, we should be unafraid to doubt.  If doubt is eventually justified, we were believing what clearly was not worth believing.  But if doubt is answered, our faith has grown stronger.  It knows God more certainly and it can enjoy God more deeply.2. Discover the root of your doubtsWhere are they coming from?•Is it fear?•Is it an incomplete understanding of God?•Is it because we have based our faith on our feelings?3. Don't give up searching for answersJeremiah 29:13 – “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all of your heart.”  4. Ask God to reveal himself to you“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7 NIV)If you are struggling with doubt, you can pray, you can study, you can ask God to reveal himself to you, you can read.  The answers are there.  God will use your doubts to deepen your faith.Today's Challenge: Identify your doubts and bring them to God. Ask for His reassurance. Study his Word. Look for the answers. Hold onto your faith in God. You may be in a difficult season, but you are not alone.Visit the website: 5MinuteDiscipleship.comFollow on social:Facebook.com/5minutediscipleshipInstagram.com/5minutediscipleship

Visit us at https://www.cartecayumc.org/   Grace for the SkepticJohn 20:19-31   What is the Big News here? Jesus is alive! Jesus breathes upon them the Holy Spirit! Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created John 1:1a In the beginning was the Word Genesis 2:7 Then the Lord God …breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person. John 20:22 Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit." But Thomas steals the show.. He wasn't there, he didn't see, he wouldn't believe! How did Jesus respond to him? With compassion, by letting him see. With a final Beatitude Why is there so much “active unbelief” nowadays? God interferes with their "good time" God has let them down (or God’s people) These are often the “burned” or the wounded... like Thomas.  Such skepticism is very often the result of pain, and leads to emptiness We imagine Thomas' disbelief as intellectual, but maybe it was relational He didn't believe his friends' eyewitness accounts, or his Rabbi's past teachings & miracles He was grieving, and this was "too good to be true;" But what are we to make of what Jesus said to Thomas? Can you imagine a case where demanding evidence is wrong? (How about "Prove that you love me!”) Some may think that what is "leaped over" through faith is a lack of evidence. But in my experience, it is more about the struggle in our hearts (insecurities, fear of being hurt, etc.) than the struggle in our heads Like "love," we can say a lot or a little when we say, "I believe" ex 1: "I believe it's going to rain." ex 2: "I believe this airplane is safe." ex 3: "I believe in my wife." "Belief in Christ" is that kind of belief that starts with a realization and moves quickly to trust, then over time permeates the center of your being and fills every corner of your life... (Like Thomas says: "My Lord and my God!") I LOVE talking with those who have honest intellectual struggles, for they are searching for the truth But for MANY this last beatitude could effectively be translated "blessed are those who believe without an injured heart impeding their way" Will we be there to assure them that God in Jesus felt the same grief and pain at the unjustness of this broken world? That is at the CORE of the Good News!

It’s kind of hard for us to accept the supernatural. Like Thomas, we find it difficult to believe something that goes beyond our understanding or transcends our reason. Yet we are drawn to those very things in entertainment, in our relationships, and in the world around us. We are attracted to superheroes, fantasy lands, and mystical plots. We want crazy love and strength from the people we rely on the most. We crave stability greater than what we can see. And it just so happens that the resurrection gives us what we are inclined towards and more. Life, forgiveness, peace with God, fearlessness . . . all of these are ours through the living and enduring promises of God because Easter still stands.

The night before He is killed, Jesus comforts his disciples, telling them He would prepare a place for them, that they would later join Him at that place, and that they knew the way to get there. Thomas objects, saying the twelve did not know where Jesus was going, nor the way to get there. Like Thomas, many Christians are confused about their ultimate destination and the way to get there. In this lesson, we look at Jesus' simple and plain teaching regarding our destination, the way we get there, and the radical implications of this teaching on our lives of Christ's followers.

Faith is not blind. Faith defines how we experience the present, deal with the past, and help with the future. Will trials cause disillusionment in your life? Disillusionment is a feeling of emptiness after something not going as expected, or failed to meet your expectations. Will trials make you withdraw from God, or invite you closer to God? Do you, like Thomas, struggle with fear or understanding what’s happening around you? Thomas’s hope was in what he thought Jesus would do for him. He likely was disappointed and isolated himself. We have a choice when faced with trials--will we turn from God or will we press in to God? Be willing to work through the feelings of disillusionment so that Christ can bring healing. God wants us to find true joy and satisfaction in Him alone. Be willing to allow Jesus to be who He wants to be in your life, not just who you want Him to be. Like Thomas, we can lack confidence and live within safe boundaries that we’ve set up in our lives to prevent us from pain and disappointment. God is drawing us out of these places and drawing us to Himself. He often uses community for us to receive a new way to believe when we have these feeling. Have faith that there is fullness, abundance and plenty for you in God, but if we refuse to come to God, we will find scarcity. Jesus is gracious and will do everything to help us believe. He doesn’t want to leave us in our fear and doubts and He doesn’t ask us to work out our fears before coming to Him. Jesus is kind and opens our eyes to greater revelations of who He is, and His love for us. Wherever you are bound in our mind, Jesus wants to rescue you! The safety and refuge you desire is only found in Jesus.

Spiritual Foundations: The Peculiar Problem Of Doubt Doubt is something most believers struggle with. There was the man who lacked belief, who said to Jesus, “I believe. Help my unbelief.” Thomas doubted the resurrected Christ was real until he could press his fingers in the nail-holes left by the Lords ttorturouscrucifixion. Peter had a clue, when he said to Jesus across the raging storm at sea, “Lord if it is you, call me to come to you.” And because of that request, Pete walked on the water. There are 3 steps that will help us banish the peculiar problem of doubt: Acknowledge it when it is real, but refuse to feed it. Like Thomas, prove the truth to ourselves. The best way is the testimony. Like Peter, ask Jesus to give us faith for the impossible, and then be crazy enough to brave the waves!
