How risky are the high volumes blasting through the earpods that poke into our kids' ears? What about our adult ears? In this episode, Dr. Delaney Ruston explores the fascinating world of hearing health and the risks associated with exposure to loud noises, especially through headphones and earphones. Delaney is joined by Dr. Robert Jackler, MD, a researcher and neurotologist from Stanford, who discusses the mechanics of hearing loss, the dangers of excessive noise exposure, and practical steps to protect hearing. The show provides numerous productive ways for parents and youth to engage in conversations about all the loud sounds streaming into their ears, whether from platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, or from online content and video games. It is intended for adult and youth audiences. On this episode, Marc talks to Bill Sassenberger, author of “Toxic Shock Records - Assassin of Mediocrity: A Story of Love, Loss, and Loud Music,” published in the spring of 2024 by Fluke Publishing. Bill and his wife Juliana ran Toxic Shock Records from the late 80s up until about 2012 - it was a store, a label, a distributor, and tour booker, and much more.Bill's book is both a personal memoir and a history of his business, as well as a diary of his time with Juliana after she had a stroke in the early 2010's. Julianna passed away before Bill wrote the book, but he includes her voice via an interview she did, which he puts right after his introduction. All together, this is a compelling portrait of two people who worked hard to get deserving music heard. As Bill writes, “We preferred to work behind the scenes. Much to our chagrin, it was this fact that probably kept us from being more successful in a business where who you knew led to your success or failure. It was just us against the world and we preferred it that way.”We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Bill Sassenberger!

In this episode, both Gary and Jason talk about some of the things that can be a bit frustrating at times; like loud music!Latin cultures love their loud music. Often times the music is so loud that the people who are listening to it cannot even talk with each other because of the volume. Although the loud music can be a bit frustrating at times, this love for loud also spills into other areas of Dominican culture like street preaching. There are many street preachers in the Dominican who preach and yell so loud that it is nearly impossible to understand what they are saying! The discussion of loud music and loud preaching led Jason and Gary down the trail of discussing how we contextualize the gospel in a way that it is understood. Contextualization had nothing to do with a compromise on doctrine, but rather the manner in which the gospel is presented so that the hearer can understand in their own cultural way.Don't worry! Gary and Jason didn't convert into wind-sucking preachers who yell at every street corner, but their observations of culture do play a significant part in how they prepare and share.Listen to how contextualization is important in every culture including American culture!

Sign up! https://www.youtube.com/c/IELTSRyan/join Do you work or are you a student? I'm currently a student. What do you study? I'm pursuing a degree in Environmental Science. Let's talk about noise. Would you describe yourself as a noisy person? No, I wouldn't say I'm a noisy person at all. I generally prefer a calm and quiet environment. In what situations does noise bother you? I find noise particularly bothersome when I'm trying to concentrate, especially while studying or working on important tasks. It can be quite distracting. Do you like to listen to loud music? Occasionally...yes, I do. However, I prefer it at a moderate volume. I find it more enjoyable, and it doesn't disturb others around me. How do you feel about noise in your living environment? I value a peaceful living environment. Excessive noise can be disruptive to both relaxation and productivity. I believe in maintaining a balance to ensure a harmonious atmosphere. Do you think cities are becoming noisier? Absolutely. It's evident that urban areas are experiencing an increase in noise levels. Factors like traffic, construction and a faster-paced lifestyle contribute to the overall rise in noise pollution. It's a concerning trend that impacts the quality of life for many city dwellers.

Sax player, composer and author Phillip Johnston lives in Sydney, Australia, but for many years he was a familiar figure on New York's downtown jazz and new music scene. He cofounded the Microscopic Septet – the band that did the theme song for the NPR show Fresh Air, led the bands Big Trouble, and the Transparent Quartet, and was an early pioneer in writing new music for old silent films. In fact, his book Silent Films/Loud Music, has just come out in paperback, and it brings Phillip and his New York gang to the studio to play some special trio arrangements of his film music.
