This month on the Purple Patch Podcast, we're highlighting Purple Patch Performance Case Studies.  We wanted to share practical insights about performance, so we're analyzing real-life examples rather than just theories. In this episode of the Purple Patch Podcast, IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon begins our case study series by examining the performance journeys of two prominent members of the Purple Patch Pro Squad, Matt Lieto and Meredith Kessler.  Matt and Meredith played a crucial role in the success of the Purple Patch Pro Squad and were instrumental in developing the coaching approach that is now central to Purple Patch Fitness. Matt shares insights on personal performance development based on the experiences of these two world-class triathletes who have excelled in their sport and beyond. Matt discusses their initial performance struggles, his coaching analysis and suggestions, and the results of their new approaches. The stories of Matt Lieto and Meredith Kessler offer valuable lessons that are relevant to anyone, regardless of their skill level or goals.  Next week's show will feature two current Purple Patch athletes, David Farsai and Chris Hughes, discussing coaching, community, and the key factors that have contributed to their success. Both athletes embody the Purple Patch methodology in practice.  To learn more about the Purple Patch methodology and the evolution of the Purple Patch Pro Squad, Click Here. About Meredith Kessler Meredith grew up in Columbus, Ohio where she was a 4-sport athlete and was inducted into her high school's Athletic Hall of Fame. Meredith went on to receive a Division I athletic scholarship at Syracuse University where she participated in field hockey and track. After graduation in 2000, she used her graduation money to purchase her first triathlon bike and entered a full Ironman (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, 26.2-mile run) two weeks later. From that moment on, she caught the spirit of IRONMAN competition and has not looked back. Since that first Ironman in 2000, Meredith has completed over 60 full Ironman races all over the United States and the world. She is an 11-time full-distance Ironman and 23-time half-distance Ironman champion. About Matt Lieto Matt Lieto has been involved in the endurance sports community for nearly two decades, but his journey to get there was quite unique. In 1998, Lieto was inspired to pursue a healthier lifestyle after watching his brother compete in the Ironman World Championship. He shed 80 pounds by skateboarding at a local park and since then has spent a significant amount of time as a professional triathlete and cyclist, participating in some of the world's most prestigious races such as the Ironman World Championships and the Unbound 200. Recently, he has been focusing on sharing his expertise by coaching, hosting a podcast, and serving as a lead commentator for Ironman events while making appearances on NBC, Peacock, RedbullTV, and other platforms. 'It blows my mind.' I remember being in kona for the first time in 2006 and I was star struck but the whole journey was really really fun, especially those first few years. 23:00 How the last few years have been for Linsey. 'it's been up and down' 'During covid, i took a sabbatical from triathlon and I didn't push through or do any of the dry-land swim training. Before covid, I was intimidated by the idea of triathlon but during covid, I spent more time in the mountains and with my husband and it was really refreshing to find out there's more to me than Linsey the triathlete' 27:00 Why retirement is so hard to talk about publicly. 31:30 What linsey is most and least looking forward to doing 'one last time.' 35:00 Linsey explains how triathlon as changed her as a woman and made her more confident as a woman. It's time to say goodbye to Witsup. The thing is, I don't want to write “it's with a heavy heart that we say goodbye … “ because my heart has done so much heavy lifting the last few weeks, if not months, as I have come to the incredibly tough decision to close down WITSUP and move on. I want to say that I'm finally in a space that it's with a light and happy heart that I can close this chapter, be excited about the next one and truly celebrate all of the awesomeness that WITSUP has achieved over a decade. From day one, WITSUP was a fight for improving the media landscape and the community for women in triathlon and sport, and we achieved so much in this space. But, for me, I now need to move on and find what lights my fire again. We decided to give WITSUP a send off via a podcast, so if you want to join us for an emotional trip down memory lane, we asked some of our faves to help share some stories. Hot tip: Don't edit your own finale podcast - it was brutal, but a beautiful thing. Thanks to Linsey Corbin, Belinda Granger, Mirinda Carfrae, Laura Siddall, Jordan Blanco, Meredith Kessler, Caroline Steffen, Rachel Joyce and Lizzy Blatchford. So what's next? I'm not entirely sure, but I know I'll dive in with the passion and drive I had when we launched WITSUP. And stay tuned, maybe the podcast will be back but will just be slightly different. Who knows. But firstly, and most importantly, I'm going to change the batteries in Frankie's toy that I've been telling her I'll do for weeks, steal a few extra cuddles, and probably have a gin. Thank you everyone so so much for all of your support over the years. It's been a hell of a ride.

In episode 14 of Fitter & Faster, we dive into all aspects of indoor cycling—from the pros and cons of training inside, how to set yourself up for success in virtual racing, as well as all the gear and equipment you need to maximize your experience. We chat with professional triathlete and Ironman champion Meredith Kessler and hear from Joe Friel and Jim Rutberg, endurance coaches and authors of the book Ride Inside. We close out the show with our Gear Up! section with Triathlete's resident gear guru and senior editor Chris Foster.  Indoor riding has undergone a huge evolution in recent years and is no longer considered something athletes do just because of adverse weather outside. It's a legitimate form of training that can lead to significant boosts in performance and can considerably help when time is tight and you're looking to balance training alongside work, family, and social commitments. Friel and Rutberg give us some insights into how they think indoor riding can work in a triathlete's training program, as well as some of the advantages and limitations of only riding inside. Kessler, a self-proclaimed "promiscuous Zwifter" who won the latest Zwift Pro Tri Series (Series 3) tells us how she's currently doing 100% of her riding indoors—and gives us some helpful tips for when you do return to riding outdoors again. She also gives us the rundown of her "She Shed"—the name she's given to her pain cave where she rides and runs throughout the winter. Our gear guru Chris Foster runs us through all the gear you need to ride inside—and it's not a short list, what with smart trainers, rolling tables, fans, waterproof earphones, and more—but if you're going to be spending significant amounts of time riding indoors, it's an investment well worth making.

While The IRONMAN Group’s mission is to provide exceptional, life-changing race experiences for athletes of all levels, from their first step to the finish line, we can only accomplish this by providing the safest possible environment, and safeguarding the citizens of our host communities. COVID-19 has substantially altered the global sports landscape and will have material impact on the mass participation industry in the immediate term. We want to reassure you that the health and well-being of our community is our primary concern. To this end, we are doing our part to communicate effectively and follow public health agencies and governmental authorities’ recommendations. We expect that there are going to be substantial and widespread event postponements in the coming weeks and months. The decision to proceed, restrict, modify or postpone an event will be based on availability of community resources and ongoing event-specific risk assessment in coordination with the relevant healthcare and government authorities and the IRONMAN Global Medical Advisory Board, an independent medical advisory board focused on health and safety. For events that will continue, The IRONMAN Group, along with the IRONMAN Global Medical Advisory Board, has outlined a series of pragmatic and practical actions designed to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 or any other infectious agent to athletes and to members of our host communities. These steps will help athletes achieve their goals while allowing communities to secure the benefits of hosting mass participation sporting events. They will be implemented worldwide at all IRONMAN Group events beginning March 19 and will continue indefinitely. Providing Flexibility to Athletes Certain races will be postponed or cancelled due to the outbreak and we will communicate these as soon as practical. Our goal will be to move the race to a date later in the year. We work in close partnership with the relevant public health authorities in the territories where the races take place and err on the side of safety for our athletes and the host community. If an event cannot occur on the scheduled date, we will take the following actions: Postponement: Registered athletes for events that are postponed due to COVID-19 by the local health authorities are automatically transferred to the rescheduled date. For those that the new date does not work, we will allow deferrals into the same event the next year. Cancellation: Registered athletes for events that are cancelled due to COVID-19 by the local health authorities are automatically deferred to the same race in 2021. Other options: We are vetting other options to allow displaced athletes to race in 2020 and will communicate those in due course. Athletes in Quarantined/Restricted Territories: For athletes in certain designated quarantine or restricted territories who have registered for races that take place before June 1, 2020 and have NOT been postponed or cancelled, we will aid in finding alternative races later in the season. For those who are sick, feel unwell, or have been potentially exposed to an infectious agent in advance of a race that will take place, do not come to the race; instead seek medical care. Once you have done so, contact the relevant Athlete Services representative for your race and we will attempt to find you another solution. Safe Event Experience In order to provide the safest experience for our athletes, we are instituting the following at our races, effective March 19.   Reinforcing Social Distancing in all elements of the event The hours of on-site event registration will be expanded. Athletes will be allowed to pick up their athlete race kit/race bib and immediately exit expo area. Athlete density will be decreased by increasing individual race space staging, corrals, etc. No-handshake behavior will be encouraged for the duration of the event. Athlete briefing information will be available digitally only. Non-core, high-contact services (e.g. wetsuit peeling) will be suspended.  Hygiene First Staff and volunteers who are interacting with participants pre-race, on race day and post-race will be provided gloves. Hand-washing stations and sanitation stations around the venue for athletes, volunteers and spectators will be increased No-touch waste disposal stations and receptacles will be rolled out as available. Frequently touched surfaces at race venue locations such as workstations, product distribution areas, tables and electronic devices will be cleaned regularly. When possible, on-course food and fluid supplies will be single use/single serving closed packaging Athletes planning to return home by airplane or rail are encouraged to avoid travel post-event for 24 hours allowing their immune system time to recover post-race. No onsite interviews or press conference with professional athletes. No handshake/contact on the race podium. Printed document distribution will be eliminated.  Medical Service Education and awareness training regarding signs and symptoms of COVID-19 will be provided to all medical and volunteer staff. Frequent communication with health authorities and healthcare facilities will be implemented to assist in assessment, referral and initial management of suspected COVID-19 illness of staff, participants, volunteers, and spectators.   This is a highly dynamic situation and we will continue to adapt and adjust as appropriate. We appreciate your patience in the coming days and weeks. We recognize that this is a challenging time but our community will endure. We are inspired by your ambition, and endeavor to be worthy of your commitment. You want to create a schedule that allows you to run easy days in Zone 2 to illicit a recovery response, increase aerobic capacity, and increase fatty acid usage. The latter is a major benefit of Zone 2 running, true aerobic running will make you a better fat burner. Zone 3 running will leave you burning a mixture of carbs and fat, never making you super efficient at being a carb burner or fat burner!   "What's New in the 303": https://303triathlon.com/kara-goucher-nearly-collides-with-mountain-lion-on-morning-training-run/ Goucher set out around 8:45 a.m. local time on Monday, May 6, toward the trail systems west of Boulder. As she passed alongside a parked truck outside a residential construction site on Sunshine Canyon Drive—still a Boulder road, not a trail—a mountain lion sprinted across the front of the vehicle. The two were inches away when they saw each other, Goucher told Runner’s World. https://303cycling.com/how-we-talk-about-drivers-hitting-cyclists/ “a perfect day to ride,” she says—and the 46-year-old triathlete was travelling east on Nelson Road, a straight, treeless rural route roughly nine miles north of town. After signaling with her arm, she started to turn left onto North 65th Avenue, a quiet stretch of pavement where she would be able to worry less about traffic. She never made it. Midturn, “I bounced off the grill of a brand-new Ford F-150,” she recalled. “I flew through the air and landed on the westbound shoulder.” According to a story that ran later that day in the local newspaper, the Boulder Daily Camera, Willerton made her turn in front of the driver, Stephen Gray, then 62, who was traveling in the same direction and hit her from behind. Willerton never lost consciousness, but she suffered six broken ribs, a triple pelvic fracture, chipped teeth, and a collapsed lung, among other injuries.   Upcoming Interviews:  On 303Radio you will hear the interview with Justin Blalog on the film Shared Territory: Gravel Bike Across Iceland Debbie Potts, host of The Whole Athlete Podcast has published her most recent episode on chronic stress and performance.  I was honored to be a guest on her podcast an recommend you check our discussion about the causes, signs and affects of chronic stress. Meredith Kessler is a busy woman, but never one to disappoint. So she knocked on our hotel room door at 11pm after the Ironman New Zealand awards function, to sit down and record this episode with us. Still reeling from her surprise on stage, Kessler fills us in on the emotional roller coster of a Kona roll down, and we compare notes on laid back husbands, team sports as kids, and dumbbell shaped uteruses (that one is all hers). Enjoy our chat with Meredith Kessler, a fan favourite, who is open to discussing anything!

This post from Meredith Kessler to her son Mak after a rough day at the office in Kona was the original inspiration to have Meredith back on the show. Part of being a good athlete is keeping perspective. There are races that go well and races that don't. "Dear Mak: Sometimes cherished dreams come true and other times they repeatedly slip away. This picture symbolizes both. You and your dad are my most sacred dream while a dream of a quality race with gusto in Kona fell yet again by the wayside. Today your mom couldn’t finish what I started. It was not my best nor proudest moment in sport. While this may continue to haunt me, as Kona usually does, I will keep learning, growing and recalibrating from it all. On repeat! And always relentlessly hug you in between

ONE STEP AHEAD: Visceral fat and its relationship to athletic performance. HOT PROPERTY INTERVIEWS – BRADEN CURRIE & JOCELYN MCCAULEY: Both Braden and Jocelyn stunned Taupo with wins at IM New Zealand this year beating Cam Brown and Meredith Kessler for their first IMNZ victories. Braden is one of New Zealand’s most well-known multisport athletes, but his talent extends far beyond multisport. In this year alone he’s raced to a 2nd place at Coast to Coast, won Red Bull Defiance, won IM New Zealand and most recently took out the short course win with his teammate Courtney Atkinson at the inaugural Breca Wanaka Swimrun.   Jocelyn hails from Texas and whilst growing up there excelled in both swimming and running. The end of 2016 brought Jocelyn her first Ironman win at IM Mallorca and this year she accomplished her dream of winning IM New Zealand. The heart rate straps that I mention that are compatible with the app are the following: Wahoo Tickr ($49) or the updated and more feature rich Wahoo TickrX ($99) Polar H7 ($49) I personally use the Wahoo Tickr and love it.
