Welcome to Mysteries to Die For.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you in the heart of a mystery. All stories are structured to challenge you to beat the detective to the solution. These are arrangements, which means instead of word-for-word readings, you get a performance meant to be heard. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. This is Season 7, Games People Play. Games are about competition conducted according to rules with participants working toward a goal. Games are a part of every culture and are one of the oldest forms of social interaction and engagement. Games can be fun, challenging and exhilarating. They can also be intense, cutthroat, and lethal. This season, our authors have fashioned deadly games and unscrupulous villains to test your detection skills. This is Episode 7, Dungeons and Dragons is the featured game. This is Death of a Dungeon Master by Erica ObeyPRE-ROLLErica's currently hard at work on THE DECOVERLEY RIDDLE, the sequel to THE BROOKLYN NORTH MURDER In the meantime, why not check out another Watson & Doyle adventure, “Dead Man's Switch,” in Mysteries to Die For Season 6: Move it or Lose It? DELIBERATIONThe fates were not smiling upon Darrell “The Dungeonator” Mahoney this day. But good fortune shines upon him with the sharp wits of Watson, Doyle, Mack Byrne and us. Here are the characters we have met, in order of introduction.• Gorgo Manglebit, the gnome who was more interested in ratings than Darrell• Alidor Silverleaf, the elf who likewise was in it for the viewers• Tyrion Quickster, the halfling who was out $5,000 for designing his avatar• Trixie the Mage Trainee, who was getting harassed for her deal with the pet gem start-up• Tim the Enchanter, the head of the IT Lab who is rumored to be a hacker in his spare time• Percy “Catstaff” Giles, the professor of poetry and reportedly powerful bardHere is what we know:• Mary Watson and Doyle were called to the auditorium by an alert indicating an IT issue at the D&D event. Tim had set up and was digitally running the event and reported the system crash was caused by too many people signing on simultaneously.• Darrell was reading the introduction to the dungeon when Catstaff Zoom-bombed the event, challenging Darrell to a riddle off.• Darrell was angry and responded by attempting to unplug the power to the virtual audience. The cord he grabbed was stripped to the wires. He died on the stage by electrocution, not by mocking as the audience really did believe.• Tim testified that The Dungeonator and Catstaff were bitter rivals. The 176 videos supported his story.• Percy “Catstaff” Giles testified he had moved past the rivalry and hadn't interacted with The Dungeonator in over two years. He denied Zoom-bombing Darrell and killing him by any method.• The gnome, elf, halfling, and mage trainee were sitting at the table on stage during the event. All had reason to be upset with Darrell.• The video of Darrell's death had a backdoor to a virtual world where some character had been taking bets on the outcome of the D&D game.Byrne doesn't have bard dread, but he does have handcuffs. On whom should he use them?PRINT AND E-BOOKA reminder to mystery readers, check out our print and e-books. About the book Seventeen-year-old Savannah is cursed. It's a sinister family heirloom; passed down through the bloodline for hundreds of years, with one woman in every generation destined to die young. The family call them Hella's girls, named for their ancestor Hella; the enslaved woman with whom it all began. Hella's girls are always angry, especially in the months before they die. The anger is bursting from Savannah - at the men who cat-call her in the street, at her mother's disingenuous fiancé, even at her own loving family. Each fit of rage is bringing her closer to the edge and now Savannah has to act to save herself. Or die trying. Because the key to survival lies in the underbelly of Cape Town, where the sinister veilwitches are waiting for just such a girl. Blood to Poison is a furious and mesmerising story about discovering magic, historical rage and love in all its guises. About Mary Watson Mary Watson is a South African author who won the Caine Prize in 2006 for her short story Jungfrau. Watson is the author of Moss, a collection of short stories published in 2004. We hgglight books that feature strong woman for Womans History month. Her Perfect Familyby Teresa Driscoll Published November 1st 2021 by Thomas & MercerA gripping psychological thriller from the bestselling author of I Am Watching You. The perfect family? Or the perfect lie? It's their daughter's graduation and Rachel and Ed Hartley are expecting it to be one of their family's happiest days. But when she stumbles and falls on stage during the ceremony, a beautiful moment turns to chaos: Gemma has been shot, and just like that, she's fighting for her life.PI Matthew Hill is one of the first on the scene. A cryptic message Gemma received earlier in the day suggests someone close to her was about to be exposed. But who? As Matthew starts to investigate, he finds more and more layers obscuring the truth. He even begins to suspect the Hartleys are hiding something big—from him and from each other. While Gemma lies in hospital in a coma, her would-be killer is still out there. Can Matthew unravel the family's secrets before the attacker strikes again?Murder at the Royal Botanic Gardens(Wrexford & Sloane #5)by Andrea Penrose Published September 28th 2021 by Kensington Publishing CorporationThe upcoming marriage of the Earl of Wrexford and Lady Charlotte Sloane promises to be a highlight of the season, if they can first untangle--and survive--a web of intrigue and murder involving the most brilliant scientific minds in Regency London...One advantage of being caught up in a whirl of dress fittings and decisions about flower arrangements and breakfast menus is that Charlotte Sloane has little time for any pre-wedding qualms. Her love for Wrexford isn't in question. But will being a wife--and a Countess--make it difficult for her to maintain her independence--not to mention, her secret identity as famed satirical artist A.J. Quill?Despite those concerns, there are soon even more urgent matters to attend to during Charlotte and Wrexford's first public outing as an engaged couple. At a symposium at the Royal Botanic Gardens, a visiting botanist suffers a fatal collapse. The traces of white powder near his mouth reveal the dark truth--he was murdered. Drawn into the investigation, Charlotte and the Earl learn of the victim's involvement in a momentous medical discovery. With fame and immense fortune at stake, there's no shortage of suspects, including some whose ruthlessness is already known. But neither Charlotte nor her husband-to-be can realize how close the danger is about to get--or to what lengths this villain is prepared to go...No One Notices the Boysby Michelle Birkby Published November 7th 2020 by Felony & MayhemPatients are dying in the hospital ward. Surely this isn't news. But to Mrs. Hudson, ill and dizzy from medication, the deaths--one patient, then another, and all of them women!--seem sinisterly connected. Even if she's the only person who sees the connection. Mary Watson knows just how she feels, though her focus is less on sick women than on missing boys--the skinny, grubby, poor ones that nobody wanted in the first place. Sherlock Holmes isn't interested in either issue; he and Dr. Watson have more important puzzles to solve. So once again, it is left to Mary and Mrs. Hudson to help the truly vulnerable, to draw lines between the dying women and the disappearing boys, and to follow those lines to their grim conclusion.

The first keeper was Alexander Pesonen and later when he married his wife, Mary Watson, she joined him. In June of 1923, after nearly 25 years at North Head, Mary went for a walk with the dog and never returned. Earlier that month Pesonen had taken his wife to the doctor where she was diagnosed with depression. But the returned because she was in high spirits and happy. Why is it called Cape Disappointment? "Though the cape was first mapped by Spanish explorer Bruno de Hezeta in 1775, its naming is credited to English Captain John Meares, who approached the cape in 1788, but could not locate the river's entrance. Meares, therefore, named the headland Cape Disappointment." *TW* Episode talks of suicide and depression --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tameandunruly/support
Death is a fact of life, but the experience of grief is unique to each of us. This poignant and thought-provoking anthology gives us portraits of grief as seen through the eyes of writers and poets. The contributions range from the deeply personal: a poet chronicles her relationship with her troubled, abusive father, a World War II survivor – to the political: an investigator from the Missing Persons Task Team draws us into the ongoing search for the remains of activists who were murdered by the apartheid state between 1960 and 1994 – to the philosophical: a writer ponders the ethics of killing small animals. Perhaps grief never truly ends but these stories transform the pain of death into something beautiful so that we can find ways to live with loss. Featuring contributions by Sisonke Msimang, Mary Watson, Karin Schimke, Hedley Twiddle, Ishtiyaq Shukri, Dawn Garisch, Shubnum Khan, Malika Ndlovu, Toni Stuart, Stacy Hardy and more.

Richard Ayoade became famous for playing Moss in the IT Crowd and went on to present Gadget Man, Travel Man and The Crystal Maze. He was nominated for a BAFTA for directing his first feature film Submarine and has directed music videos for Artic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend and Radiohead. Despite that, he describes himself primarily as a writer and his third book Ayoade on Top has just been published. Choreographer, dancer and artistic director Kevin Turner was spotted for his talent as a child. However, as his career soared, his mental health suffered. He describes how he used dance to recover and now coaches other mentally ill people in how to use movement to heal. This week on Tea & Tattle, I’m joined by the author Mary Watson, to discuss Mary’s latest novel, The Wickerlight. Mary was born in Cape Town, but now lives on the West Coast of Ireland with her husband and children. Her struggle to adapt to a new place inspired Mary to write a story that drew on the beautiful landscape of Ireland, as well as the fascinating tales of Irish mythology. The result was Mary’s first YA novel, The Wren Hunt, a captivating tale that reflects Mary’s own love for fantasy blended with the everyday world we all recognise. In The Wren Hunt, Mary created a magical world that exists in the shadows of the real world, run by two warring factions: the judges and the augurs, members of which are both able to draw on the power of the natural world to create their own kinds of magic. The Wren Hunt was shortlisted for the Irish Book Awards, and Mary’s sequel, The Wickerlight, which is published this Thursday, May 30th, has been eagerly anticipated by her many fans. The Wickerlight introduces a new character, Zara, who has recently moved with her family to the small village in Ireland in which The Wren Hunt was also set. Shortly after their arrival, Zara’s teenage sister, Laila, is found dead on the village green, with no obvious cause of injury. In a quest to solve her sister’s death and understand why Laila had become so involved in the local stories of magic and folklore, Zara is drawn deeper and deeper into the mysterious and dangerous world of Judges and Augurs. As Zara hunts for answers to her questions, she meets David, a young Judge man who is struggling to find his place within his family, as well as his role in an ancient magical feud. I particularly enjoy Mary’s stories for their brilliant plots and intrepid heroines, and I would recommend both The Wren Hunt and The Wickerlight as gifts for any teenagers in your life, but they’re also brilliantly entertaining reads for adults. I had a wonderful time chatting to Mary about her books and was intrigued to learn how she first started writing YA fiction and how her own reading and life experiences shaped her work. "not long after my marriage" [ENGR] In this episode, we look at how married life was treating Dr. Watson in "The Adventure of the Boscombe Valley Mystery." William S. Baring-Gould placed this at June 6 or June 8, 1889. It was published as the fourth short story in the collection known as The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. In the opening scene, Holmes sends for the recently married Watson to accompany him on a case, and Mary Watson, far from nagging her husband about his penchant for dashing off with his friend, actually urges Watson to go. Watson gives her a charming compliment in return by alluding to their romantic meeting in The Sign of Four. The affectionate circle is completed when Holmes gives Watson very gracious thanks for agreeing to come along on the trip. What are we to make of Watson's home life? Is he simply using a literary technique by making his marriage seem able to weather the storm of Holmes? Or was Mary genuinely understanding of the push-pull relationship between the doctor and the detective? A tribute to the late Peter Sallis, an appearance by Felix Unger and Oscar Madison, and more surprises await.
