Humans have an extraordinarily high genetic mutation rate — which just means we'll never be perfect. Laurence D. Hurst is professor of evolutionary genetics in the Milner Centre for Evolution at the University of Bath, and he joins host Krys Boyd to discuss why imperfection is baked into our genetic code, why other species can get rid of “junk” DNA better, and what this means for human evolution. His book is “The Evolution of Imperfection: The Science of Why We Aren't and Can't Be Perfect. Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices
As a teen leadership coach and a parent of two teenage boys, I've seen firsthand the struggles teens face—and the frustrations parents feel trying to connect with them. From privacy concerns (like knocking before entering their rooms) to trust issues surrounding phones and social media, and even more serious challenges like vaping, the underlying issue always seems to come back to one question: How are we engaging with our teens? I often hear parents say, “I get it—we had no training for this technology. We're learning as we go, and we're probably getting it wrong.” And that's okay. What matters most is that we start listening—really listening—to our teens. When Was the Last Time You Had a Real Conversation with Your Teen? Not just the usual “How was your day?” followed by a one-word response. I mean a genuine, open-ended conversation where they felt heard and understood. Many teens don't feel comfortable talking to their parents because they're afraid of how we'll react. My 17-year-old shared that a lot of his friends feel trapped in vaping addictions but won't talk to their parents out of fear. Instead of seeking help, they silently accept the health risks because they don't believe their parents will support them—only punish them. When my own son struggled with vaping, he told me he initially did it to fit in and to ease his anxiety. That terrified me. How could something so harmful be seen as a solution? Later, he admitted it was actually making things worse, but at the time, he knew telling me it helped with anxiety would make me listen. And it did. Trusting Your Teen—Not to Be Perfect, But to Make Mistakes Every child needs something different from their parents. One of my sons values privacy; the other benefited from having his door removed when he was struggling. It wasn't about punishment—it was about connection and accountability. We have to trust our teens—not to always make the right choices, but to come to us when they don't. When my kids get in trouble at school, I don't double down with additional punishments at home. I remember being grounded as a teen—it didn't stop me from making mistakes, but it did teach me to hide them better. Instead of reacting based on fear or our own reputations, we need to help our teens navigate their mistakes and learn from them. How Do You Want Me to Help You an Open Conversation? Not every issue is life-threatening. Some are as small as not knocking before entering their room. Others, like phone usage and social media, are bigger. But in all cases, the key is to ask, listen, and engage. Start by asking: How do you want me to help you figure this out? How do you want me to listen to you? How am I showing up for you? As parents, we make the final decisions, but giving our teens a voice in the conversation makes all the difference. If we create a space where they feel safe to talk—where honesty is met with understanding instead of just consequences—they'll be more likely to come to us when it matters. I have found the biggest way to bring your teen home to talk to you is by being honest about your own mistakes. Show them that learning, growing, and making better choices is a lifelong process.

So many of us believe that what we eat or how/how much we exercise are the most importnt drivers of weight loss. But the reality is momentum and the compound effect are far more impactful. What pulls us out of momentum are "little quits" - you still want to lose weight or stop emotionally eating, but you start to doubt you'll be able to hit your goal for a particular week or month. You unintentionally pull back, because the underlying thought is "I won't hit this goal, so why bother keep trying?" Usually we'll follow it up with a consolation thought, like: "I'll start over Monday," or "I'll start over next month." Today we explore this concept and how to stop the "little quits" so that you can build momentum and actually enjoy your life while losing weight. Keep listening for more. And when you're ready to stop emotionally eating and create the life and body you crave, I can help. #ActuallyAutistic Hosts, Dr. Angela Lauria and Matt Lowry, LPP, discuss the many autistic themes and characters in TV show "The Good Place.”The character Chidi displays numerous Autistic traits, including a clear special interest he can insert into any conversation, process complexity, a concrete thinking style, consistent anxiety, interoception difficulties, and a high level of integrity adhering his own personal morality. His method of reading tables of contents to calm down also resonates—especially with Angela!“So Chidi, my god, if there's ever an autistic coded character, it is definitely Chidi.” —MattEleanor is Queer, loyal, and a human “bullshirt” detector. She demonstrates perspective-taking challenges, a tendency to miss allistic social cues, direct communication, and is lectured about her “tone.” Her backstory of trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) also fits the pattern of many late-diagnosed autistic women.Jason embodies passionate interests with his fixation on the Jacksonville Jaguars and Molotov cocktails. This monotropic focus combined with a tendency to be inattentive aligns with ADHD which has a lot of overlap with autism.“Well, so back in May, they discovered that ADHD brains are hyperconnected just like ours. So that's why there's such a large overlap. And now, again, for the longest time…they knew that our brains were immune to the mTORs, which caused the hyperconnected brains, which again, they try to cure us by pruning our brains, which resulted in a lot of brain cancer.” —MattThe gradual evolution of the AI Janet's identity, as she asserts her preferences beyond what her original programming dictated, mirrors an autistic unmasking journey.Tahani is exhausted from a lifetime of masking to fit her family's standards. Actor Jameela Jamil shares she has EDS, POTS, mast cell activation syndrome, and other conditions common among autistic individuals.Architect Michael displays fascination with humans, impatience with excessive details, preference for concrete examples over philosophical debate, and a literal interpretation style.Overall, the hosts see The Good Place as profoundly Autistic in its monotropic moral philosophy focus, diverse representation of neurodivergence, and insightful illustrations of autistic experiences.Starting around 53:24 Angela spontaneously demonstrates which aspects of Autistic Culture? Happy New Year friends! Here are some fun announcements! The You Don't have to be Perfect Podcast is celebrating it's 5th season. We are kicking off the new year with a brand new episode about prayer, are we praying wrong? You can still find me live on Instagram Monday-Friday at 9am Mountain Time for our Daily Bible Reading. 3 Years ago God whispered, read the Bible live. The big purpose was simple, to get the Word of God out across the world. But I want to elaborate on why that matters. Because God's Word is powerful and posses the ability to change lives all by itself. If we want to follow Jesus we need to know His voice, especially in a world full of distractions and deception. To know God's voice we must read His word. It is the foundation of our faith and without it we flounder. Without God's Word we guess, and that won't cut it on judgment day. Judgment day is real and spoken of all throughout the Bible and the words spoken about it come straight from God. Judgment day for some will be the worst terror beyond your imagination so you want to be on the right side of it, God's side. We read the Bible to effectively fight the devil and all the evil that comes with Him. So let's read my friends. Let's hear what God has to say and most importantly, let's obey! 3. I have a new book out, The Wilderness Remains! The Wilderness Remains will immerse you into the Exodus story with profound relatability, deepening your intimacy with the one true God along the journey. Grab your copy today In your favorite format! Kindle, Paperback or Hardback! I'm praising God for my 4th published book and have created a companion journal to enhance your study through Exodus. And God has confirmed that there will be more books in the future. Coming up next is not a Bible study but a book about what it feels like to follow Jesus in the real world. I hope you'll stick around for the next season of the You Don't Have to Be Perfect podcast and I pray that it will nurture your soul as you continue your journey.

In a time and culture that avoids commitment, it's impressive that people still attend church weekly. So what keeps them going? We'll answer this question and more in the final episode of the Why Do You Go to Church series, on the You Don't Have to Be Perfect podcast. I've attended a church service my entire life, and the reason has varied over the years, so I used the You Don't Have to Be Perfect podcast as a platform for this research. If you haven't listened to these interviews yet please do. It may give you insight into your own reasons for attending church. In each interview, there were strong consistencies. For instance, most answered that they went to church for fellowship and to worship God. From infancy through college, I attended a weekly church service (and usually one midweek). I genuinely loved being there. I loved the people, the singing, and the message of Christ's love. Oddly enough, I hadn't really cultivated a personal relationship with God yet. I heard people talk about it but wasn't really sure how to have it. As a young mother, my personal relationship with God began to grow, and I knew what it meant to know Him intimately. Oddly enough, that's when I began to dislike attending church. If you don't know by now, I have practiced a perfectionistic way of thinking (my entire life), contributing to my dislike for church. Perfectionists are known to find problems and quickly implement a plan to solve said problem so that the situation can be "perfect." I soon realized I couldn't fix the church no matter how hard I tried, leading to a weekly dread. As we'd creep closer to Sunday each week, I'd get increasingly uncomfortable, but I'd still go. I continued to attend church to be obedient toward God and in support of my husband and children. "Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (NIV)" -Hebrews 10:25. This verse specifically encouraged me to keep going and not give up even though I felt like I was in a congregation of pretenders. I know God is not fooled by those who pretend, but for some reason, they don't seem to realize that. Jesus said that they would know we are Christians by our love. More specifically, He said, "By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." -John 13:35. All I saw were people functioning by worldly methods and calling it Christianity, or worse, love. I wasn't fooled. God has opened my eyes to who He is through the power of His Holy Word, and I could no longer be fooled. I had gone to church with these people for almost twenty years, and I started wondering, why do they come? What do they believe about the church that has them showing up every week? As I began this series, my family and I began a beautiful transition that breathed fresh air into my soul. Amazingly, the series spanned from the beginning of that transition to where I am now: from California to Montana! I enjoyed every interview and wanted to share some of my favorite parts. My guest Kandee shared that her favorite reason for attending church was to see what God was doing in people's lives because it encouraged her and spurred her on in her faith. I love that, and as we gather together in the Spirit, it should encourage and strengthen our faith. When you meet at the church to fellowship, do you feel encouraged?

Musing with Michael (Mike) Schur is a bit like playing chess with Garry Kasparov. No matter what conversational move you make, he has a counter that will likely stun you. No wonder his book is called How to Be Perfect: The Correct Answer to Every Moral Question… In this episode, host Charlie Bresler is musing with Michael Schur. Creator of the critically acclaimed NBC comedy The Good Place, co-creator on Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn 99, and Rutherford Falls, writer on The Office and Saturday Night Live, Michael has a long history of being both very smart and very funny. Events in young adulthood led him to read philosophy as a way of understanding himself and those around him. In particular, a seemingly very minor incident that got a bit out of control caused Michael to question the morality of what he was doing. Fortunately for all of us, this spiraling minor incident ultimately led to the television show The Good Place, a show that tackles the question of how we judge if a life has been “good” or “bad.” Moral dilemmas also produced the book How to Be Perfect. In his book, Michael talks about the principle of umbuntu, a concept in many parts of Africa that is described as the philosophy of “I am because you are.” “Our happiness depends on the happiness of others and vice versa,” he explains. And in many ways, he says, it's almost the opposite of one of the central precepts here in the west: “I think therefore I am.” It's not a commonly known idea here in the west, but, says Michael, it might be an antidote to some of the selfishness that individualism often leads to. We strongly recommend you read or listen to How to Be Perfect: The Correct Answer to Every Moral Question. You can find out more about Michael Schur on IMDb: Michael Schur––IMDb. We also hope you'll share, rate, and review this podcast so others can find us more easily. Then learn more about The Life You Can Save on our website: thelifeyoucansave.org
Episode Notes In this episode, Rami and Shannon break down some deep moral philosophy inspired by Michael Schur's book "How to Be Perfect," the creative mind behind "The Office" and "Parks and Rec." They get into old-school concepts like deontology (sticking to rules), utilitarianism (doing the most good), existentialism (embracing freedom), and Ubuntu (that universal bond thing). They share thoughts on making good life choices, showing empathy, and even throw in the shopping cart test for some real-world wisdom.
This is the FIRST EPISODE of This Is the Bad Place, a recap podcast of the NBC's Good Place TV show. We're covering the pilot episode, and talking about ethical conundrums, anxiety about the afterlife, religious trauma, and whether Ted Danson's character is some form of Billy Graham. Leaders don't manage people, they manage energy. Drama researcher, thought leader, and New York Time best-selling author Cy Wakeman joins Erin to discuss what it means to manage the energy of your team & the individuals you lead by analyzing emotional waste and how to replace it with good mental processes. If your team is burning out quickly and you're not sure what you can do – this is a good place to start. More about Cy: Cy Wakeman is an International Speaker on Leadership & Management, a Global Thought Leader, and Drama Researcher—which is a career she discovered accidentally and has since quantified how much drama there actually is in the workplace. Her research has shown that the average employee spends nearly 2.5 hours per day in drama, gossiping, tattling, withholding buy-in, resisting change and stepping down from accountability. Drama is emotional waste, any unproductive thought or behavior and like any other waste in the workplace. Now, her work is focused on giving leaders tools to recapture that emotional waste and upcycle it into results. Cy founded Reality-Based Leadership, her company that teaches leaders and individual contributors ways to lead, and reality that diffuses drama in the workplace. Cy is also a New York Times best-selling author and has published four books, the latest of which is Life's Messy, Live Happy: Things Don't Have to Be Perfect for You to Be Content (2022). A banana peel is biodegradable, eventually. And it's the “eventually” part that's ripe for discussion in this edition of Doing What Works. Is that banana peel litter? Is the parent who walks away from a grocery cart with a kid inside putting that child's life in danger? Should you honk or yell or otherwise berate a driver not paying enough attention to cyclists and pedestrians? We don't have all (or really any) of the answers, but you might be inspired by the questions! Here are your show notes…If you want a copy of the advice column Katie brought up at the start of this show, let me know. You might love Michael Schur's How to Be Perfect as much as Katie did!

YouTube's slogan is, “Broadcast Yourself,” and that is what we do online. We produce and express ourselves as a brand to be procured and optimized for online achievement: Me Inc. We sell this brand to Big Tech (Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft) like a contestant on the television show Shark Tank. The show promotes the neoliberal myth of self-determination: only hard workers who push themselves become winners (superiors) and survive (fittest). The recurring storyline is that the Sharks are winners by their own free will (self-made): grit, hustle, determination, triumph over adversity, discipline, etc. Be Perfect and Try Harder. We are scripted to build an Empire of the Self: Be Your “self”, Be Transparent, Never Settle (i.e., never lose your “self”), and Compete (Win)! Big Tech are the billionaire Sharks, and our online activity is incorporated. But in this digital Shark Tank, we own 0% equity in our digital selves. George Orwell understood that an efficient totalitarian regime drowns the consciousness of the citizens. In the book Nineteen Eighty-Four he notes this as “an act of self-hypnosis.” We are hypnotized by the hype of so-called “artificial intelligence” because the claims are that it is traveling in a direction that will succeed human intelligence, e.g., ChatGPT. As Erik Larson (2021) notes, “The path exists only in our imaginations.” The AI system lacks common sense (intuition) and as these systems are trained for general knowledge (rather than just Jeopardy!), they become more erroneous in their responses. Intelligence includes an inwardness and also goosebumps. As has been noted, the relationship with the virtual world is symbiotic (psychologically). Now, it is becoming a physical symbiosis. Ferris Jabr quotes Elon Musk in The New York Times Magazine on his ultimate goal for Neuralink. Musk stated that an achievement of “a sort of symbiosis with artificial intelligence” is necessary so that humanity is not obliterated, subjugated or “left behind” by superintelligent machines. “If you can't beat em, join em,” he once said on Twitter, calling it a “Neuralink mission statement.” Big Tech is after the capture of desire at the neuroplastic level. How do they do this? Big Tech and the new semiocapitalism in general, play the Game called Happy To Help! Digital platforms, applications, and enthusiastic bots (“How can I help you?”) are always Happy To Help! Apps dutifully remember our tasks, memories, documentation, bank records, calendars, social lives, transactions etc., all while having an ulterior motive. If Big Tech is the user's parent, it is saying to us, “Don't think what you think, think what I think.” These monopolies exploit the user's behavioral surplus data to sell it to third party entities for ad revenue. Yeah surveillance! The smartphone, smart home, smart vacuum, and smart bed are all collecting data for what Byung Chul-Han (2022) calls the “information regime.” Han notes that this is how “Surveillance creeps into daily life by way of convenience.” Therefore, the real “value” of Big Tech is its ability to surveil the populace as it is in a symbiotic relationship with governments, intelligence agencies, and militaries. The solution is subversion. Undermine the authority of internal and external cultural conditioning, i.e., artificial system (ego/ideology). Don't be your “self”, be authentic (Martian). This implies having the naïvest possible frame of mind (talk about FOMO) for observing earthly phenomena, thus “leaving the intellect free for inquiry without the distraction of preconceptions.” (Berne, 1966) We must be clueless, an idiot, in order to “set aside preconceived notions and allow oneself to not know what the hell is going on.” (Lennox, C. Ed., 1997; p. 62). As Martian (Zen) we access intuitive knowledge for an appropriate response. www.StayAtHomeDay.com Visit MankatoTherapist.com for more information and to contact Andrew Archer. Here's Fr. Marc's homily from Feb. 19th: "Be Holy. Be Perfect." Enjoy!
Be Perfect as Your Heavenly Father is Perfect . . . How Do We Do That? In today's Mass we have an opening prayer. We turn to the Lord and ask for the Grace that through always contemplating heavenly things we might be pleasing to Him, in words and in deeds. Wow, that's a prayer! As we enter the Lenten Season, hear why this is so important! Hear more within the Homily. The Scripture places before us challenging words today. In the first reading (not included within this audio), we receive a commandment from the Lord, spoken through Moses. Be Holy, just as the Lord thy God is Holy! Many humans will say, Who Me? I am not Holy! Be Holy, just as the Lord thy God is Holy! Hear more within the Homily. Be Perfect . . . Those words in the beginning of the first reading are comparable to the commandment from the lips of Jesus at the end of the Gospel. Be Perfect, just as your Heavenly Father in Heaven is Perfect! Our natural reaction is to say, Lord, you are commanding far too much from me! Lord, who can do that? Lord, how is that even possible, and what is it in the first place? Be Perfect as Your Heavenly Father is Perfect! Hear about the one specific thing that must be characteristic of every living Christian. It is fundamental to being perfect. Hear how being perfect should impact everyone's spiritual life. Hear more within the Homily. Listen to this Meditation Media.
