The traditional class structure of doing a warmup, learning a couple of new techniques, and followed by sparring is NOT an efficient way to learn jiu-jitsu. We can do much better if we use insights from research on coaching and learning. Today's guest is Cal MacDonald, a BJJ black belt and competitor who has dedicated himself to developing his teaching and coaching skills to the highest possible level. Cal is a longtime blackbelt under Rob Biernacki at Island Top Team. Rob and his team are at the cutting edge of teaching and training methodologies that make people amazingly good incredibly fast. Cal coached full time at Island Top Team for five years and is also a fierce competitor, having won Gold at NAGA, Pacific Northwest Open, and many other tournaments. He has travelled to top academies for Worlds and ADCC camps, training with top athletes like Yuri Simões, Mason Fowler, and Caio Terra, so he knows what works at the highest levels. His proudest accomplishments are the successes of his students, and he has spent thousands of hours coaching and cornering competitors as they fight their way to the podium. Cal stays abreast of advances in sports science and cognitive science, and blended that with experience and experimentation to create the BJJ Foundations program - more info about that at https://www.grapplearts.com/foundations Good luck with your training, Stephan Kesting

ADCC has an incredibly unusual ruleset and point system. To help everyone get more familiar with these rules before the West Coast Trials this weekend on Flograppling (https://www.flograppling.com/events/7379684-2022-adcc-west-coast-trial) I wanted to talk about some of the unique aspects of this tournament. I've been watching ADCC live since 2009, and despite becoming very familiar with the rules over the years, there are even a couple new things I didn't know until recording this. For some footage of things referenced...here's the Craig Jones vs Mason Fowler match from 2019 where you can see multiple instances of Craig not getting scored on due to him having a submission locked up while going from top to bottom. The link is time-coded to 7:44. Notice Craig is never on bottom in this transition for more than 3 seconds without the guillotine locked up. As long as that guillotine is on, points can't be scored against him: https://youtu.be/Quwf3HA9d20?t=464 Also, at 8:41 (https://youtu.be/Quwf3HA9d20?t=521) Craig rolls for a kimura and ends up on bottom, but because he initiated the kimura, points are not scored. Here is the moment where Rafa Mendes avoided a -1 in the finals for ending up in guard because he initiated an anaconda choke on Cobrinha: https://youtu.be/5-IZHyH1Vro?t=114 and again later in the same match: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-IZHyH1Vro&t=359sHere's the exact moment in the Keenan Cornelius vs Romulo Barral match where Keenan was gets a -1 for having a knee on the mat for 3 seconds during the points-period (2nd half) of the match: https://youtu.be/4Ij4DaVhhO4?t=474Here's the Gordon Ryan vs Xande match I referenced in regards to regulation vs OT having more weight in the event of a judge's decision: https://www.flograppling.com/video/6012782-xande-ribeiro-vs-gordon-ryan-adcc-2017-world-championshipsFeel free to reach out to me anytime at https://www.instagram.com/drewdarce/

In this episode the guys get a sit down interview with the MIGHTY Mason Fowler, S.U.G champ and IBJJF World Champion. Mason talks how he arrived at CTA in San Jose and what it takes to make it to the top of the competitive grappling world!
We know Saturday nights and 'UFC' go together and this weekend we had 'UFC on ESPN+ 46'. On this card, four fighters REALLY stood out, because the performance they put out was great, but in themselves, they seemed completely rejuvenated. Court McGee and Ben Rothwell both looked like early versions of themselves, but better still. We saw the best version of Norma Dumont Viana we've seen in the Octagon. And you'd never have recognised this Jared Vanderaa from the one who debuted at 'UFC on ESPN+ 43'. We had finishes on the card, as David Dvořák scored a first round rear naked choke, Bruno Silva landed an atomic right hand. And in the Co-main, Carla Esparza put on the type of dominant display, (resulting in a second round TKO) that was the perfect calling card for a title shot! AND, in the Main Event, Rob Font pretty much had flawless coming out party. Even in the first round where he was taken down numerous times, he could never be held. His jab was a piston and now the division definitely knows dem Cartel boyz ain't messing aroundp‼️ And as Steve Jobs would say "and one last thing", cause we had 'Submission Underground 23' on Sunday. Straight out the gate Aaron Tiegs let cats know what type of night this would be. Nicholas Maximov also demonstrated just what slick looked like. And if you didn't know the name Raquel Canuto well, hope you were paying attention. We saw what happens when Richie Martinez ain't bout that smiley ish And anyone who didn't realise Carlos Condit had a ground game, they better take note! Team TORO (Anthony Birchak & Deon Clash) challenged Team SAC (Cris Lencioni & Owen Papworth) for the SUG Tag Team World Championship in a fun arse match. AND then, Mason Fowler & Kyle Chambers went at it. When the dust settled, Fowler is still head of the SUG household So, let's break it all down, in today's (ep 192b) @ChinCheckPod - UFC on ESPN+ 46: Font vs Garbrandt - Submission Underground 23 *(Music) 'Lose My Mind' (Feat. Plies) by Jeezy - 2011 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/eftv/message
