Liz Allen Buries the Lede  Our season 5 closer is a real treat! We have an incredible guest, Liz Allen, improv performer, director, coach, teacher and guru Liz Allen. Liz has performed and coached improv for 32 years! She works primarily out of iO in Chicago, (This is a big deal people!) but she has performed and coached improv all over the world, notably at the Edinburgh Fringe and, oh, by the way, she coached The Commune, the improv ensemble in Mike Birbiglia's 2016 feature film Don't Think Twice, NBD. (This actually blows Sarah's mind as Mike Birbiglia is her fave comedian.) Recently, Liz has been delving into solo show writing and performance, she recently performed her first solo show, Tonight I Am My Mother, and is completing her next solo show, There Were Signs, about her years in Las Vegas with her husband and their offspring. This is how Sarah met Liz, on an online solo show class with The Barrow Group, which is one good thing we can say about the pandemic. Okay, she sounds amazing, but how does she end up as a guest on Comedicine? Well, before discovering improv, Liz was a mechanical engineer! What? She worked for fifteen years as a consulting engineer and pharmaceutical technical writer. One night, on a lark, she joined some friends seeing a show at The Second City in downtown Chicago…and Liz got bit by improv. Do engineering and improv mesh? Elaine Miller, Fanny and Me!  In this episode of Comedicine, we get to talk to pelvic physiotherapist and comedian, Elaine Miller. Elaine Miller is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, specialising in women's health.  She started doing stand-up comedy as a hobby, finding the lighter side of female urinary incontinence. In doing so, she found a way to reach and educate women about their fannies.  Elaine lives in Edinburgh, home of the biggest Arts festival in the world, so the obvious next step for her was to write and perform a solo show about pelvic floors at the Edinburgh Fringe. Gusset Grippers, won the Comedy Award at Fringe World, Australia in 2020.  Her second show, Viva Your Vulva, the Hole Story, was one of only two shows to be awarded five stars in 2023.  She collaborated with Monash University on a paper examining humour as a health promotion tool and her #DryByChristmas social media campaign reminding women to do their pelvic floor exercises was published by Rosie Haper from Bournemouth University. Elaine shares some incredible facts, like 50% of women don't know the difference between the vulva and the vagina. FIFTY PERCENT PEOPLE! This is just not acceptable to Elaine. It is also not acceptable that it takes and average of 7 years for women to get medical help with incontinence. SEVEN YEARS!! The good news is that once you find a pelvic physio, most women get better! Through humour, Elaine is trying to change the world. One vagina at a time.   Clip – https://youtu.be/XODY8eqbG4I?feature=shared  More information on Elaine: https://www.csp.org.uk/frontline/article/3-minutes-elaine-miller  Scientific papers on humour: https://www.monash.edu/news/articles/could-humour-be-the-key-to-a-healthier-society  https://staffprofiles.bournemouth.ac.uk/display/rharper1  @gussiegrips   SCRIBENOTE  Thank you to our season 5 title sponsor, Scribenote! Scribenote is an AI-powered veterinary scribe that saves you hours of record-keeping every day, boosts clinic efficiency, and helps you leave work on time.  Promo code: COMEDICINE15 for 15% off Scribenote for 1 year Link: https://app.scribenote.com/auth/register?referralCode=Comedicine-Bonus (use this linke to double the regular free trial usage!)Thanks for listening to Comedicine! It's Opposite Day With Rob Lewin!!! This episode is very exciting because it is opposite day with Rob Lewin! Rob is an improviser and sketch comedian living in Guelph, Ontario. His live comedy credits include The Second CityToronto FamCo,The Making-Box Brigade, The Bad Dog Featured Players and festivals such as Toronto Sketchfest, Detroit Improv Festival, Del Close Marathon NYC, and Montreal Improv Festival. He teaches improv and sketch classes with Pinch and you see his sketch duo Corpse perform around Guelph and Kitchener-Waterloo. Unlike every other (wonderful) Comedicine guest, who is a health care professional first and then transitions into comedy, Rob has been improvising since before his brain was fully formed. (Grade 9!) Rob is currently in his second year of the Practical Nursing program at Conestoga College. Yes, he is going to keep on doing improv, sketch and teaching improv AND doing nursing, but not at the same time. Would it be cool to teach nurses about improv with his background? Maybe it would, but that's not what Rob is doing here people! Have a listen, Rob is a wonderful improviser, comedian and human and he whoever ends up with him as their nurse and/or in his audience and/orin his improv class is very lucky!!!Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/rob.lewin/Thanks for listening to Comedicine! On today's episode we talk to our first paramedic! Brad Pittman has been a paramedic and stand up comedian for 34 years. He works the nightshift as a paramedic outside of Atlanta. Guys, Brad has seen some sh*t. Maybe you think your job is stressful, but do you wear a bullet proof vest to work? Do you? Well Brad does. Brad also had a stroke 8 years ago while at work. This is terrible, but if you are going to have a stroke, having one in an ambulance with another paramedic is a close second to having one in the hospital. Brad's stroke left him with an intermittent stutter which he has had to work through on stage. Brad is also a Youtuber with some super fun characters that he has cooked up, and a podcaster. His podcast is called Smoked Meat, named after his love of meat! And his meat-related hobbies that helped him get through some tough times. Getting to know Brad was super fun! I'm glad he is out there! On today's show, Alex and Calvin are thrilled to be joined by Dr. Patricia Fancher, a Continuing Lecturer in the Writing Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In her fabulous new book Queer Techné: Bodies, Rhetorics, and Desire in the History of Computing, Dr. Fancher offers a groundbreaking history of how the Manchester University Computer and discourses about it were shaped by queerness, embodied gender performativity, and invisibilized gendered labor in the early 1950s. Some of the figures that Fancher's book offers new understandings of include Alan Turing, Christopher Strachey, Audrey Bates, and Cicely Popplewell, with each case study capturing how technical communication and technology development are about more than just usability, efficiency, and innovation. A recurring theme in Dr. Fancher's rhetorical reading of Turing and his colleagues is that there is something queer, performative, and playful about intelligence, and that these dimensions are mostly ignored by the hype around so-called “artificial intelligence” tools like large language models. To explore this theme, we chat about Christopher Strachey's rudimentary love letter generation program, comparing its output to ChatGPT's for similar prompts. We ultimately explore what Turing might have thought of LLMs, and how we can begin to ask queerer questions of our digital tools to produce more interesting and intelligent discourses and technologies. Welcome to the third episode of Season Nine of the Bagley Wright Lecture Series on Poetry podcast. Season Nine is comprised of lectures written and delivered by Lisa Jarnot during her tenure as a Bagley Wright Lecturer. Lisa Jarnot's autobiographical lectures are an intimate, uncompromising, and generous glimpse into a remarkable life in poetry. Throughout these talks, Jarnot explores what it means to be a woman in a male-centered experimental tradition, to have white privilege and to write poetry. She examines the prophetic tradition in American poetry as inflected through counter-cultural spirituality, investigates the generative tensions at the intersections of formal and informal, traditional and experimental; develops relationships between ‘deep gossip' and ecstatic connectedness; and asks, finally, what does it mean for the poet to act as prophet in envisioning a new heaven and a new earth. Today we'll hear “Epistle to the Summer Writing Program (On the Metaphysics of Deep Gossip),” given June 24, 2021, in partnership with the Naropa University, via Zoom. Jarnot's book based on her BWLS lectures, titled, Four Lectures, is forthcoming from Wave Books, and is available here. Visit us at our website, www.bagleywrightlectures.org, for more information about Bagley Wright lecturers, as well as links to supplementary materials on each lecturer's archive page, including selected writings. The emergence of ChatGPT has sent shockwaves through many secondary and post-secondary English departments. There's no shortage of doomsaying and prognosticating about the future of writing instruction, even the discipline itself, in the wake of the large language model revolution. Luckily for us, my guest today is Dr. J Palmeri—Professor of English and Director of the Writing Program at Georgetown University. J's work exploring the past, present, and future of multimodal composition is some of the richest, most comprehensive scholarship I've seen. Better still, J practices what they preach in the classroom. Over the course of our dialogue, J details the ways they use new media pedagogy to learn with students, embrace play, compose for real audiences, hack technology, center learning, and ultimately to rethink teaching and learning. There is no shortage of philosophical questions and practical suggestions, but my favorite part of this episode is the way J situates his work on multimodality within a broader story—one that will likely resonate with many of you. This episode is a powerful reminder of why technology is only a tool. Whether that technology is tactile, digital, or artificial intelligence, there is no replacing the deeply human parts of teaching, learning, and communicating alongside others.Faculty Page100 Years of New Media Pedagogy (Open Source Book)Academic Research (Google Scholar)Support the show

Does Alyson Sinclair sleep? We had to keep asking ourselves as we chatted it up with Alyson from the floor of AWP (Association of Writing and Writing Program)'s Conference and Bookfair. She's done it all when it comes to the writing world—bouncing between the bureaucracy of big-four publishers—um, she sent faxes to Seamus Heaney?—to the hustle and bustle world (emphasis on the hustle) of independent presses. Currently, Alyson is the Owner/Publisher at The Rumpus and founder of Nectar Literary, a boutique publicity and communications firm for authors, independent presses, and literary organizations of all ilk. Making literary community might just be the crux of our conversation. After learning that hunker-down-and-drink-tea-all-day-with-page-turny-manuscripts editorial roles are not the default at an eye-opening internship, she turned to publicity. Connecting authors to the broader writing ecosystem thrilled her. Publicity and pitching media, in Alyson's eyes, is a fascinating form of problem solving. Her insight comes from a wide range of experiences in all corners of our ecosystem, spanning from soliciting advertising at a magazine, to setting off individually in the convoluted publishing universe, to coexisting with other literary collectives that share the same mission. Let's just say—both before and after soaking in this conversation—Bloomsday is a certified Alyson Sinclair fangirl. For her second act, she is an improv performer, actor in film and TV, voiceover artist, stunt performer and podcaster. She is also a medical consultant for film and TV where she tries really hard to make art medically accurate, but that's hard because sometimes medically accurate doesn't look good on TV.
