The Future of the Pro-Life Movement - Interview with Matthew Lee Anderson

As we hit the homestretch of the 2024 election, we're witnessing significant changes to the demographics of the Democratic and Republican coalitions. Political scientists call this “realignment” and we haven't seen one this big in a generation. Just this last week, a new report came showing that for the first time ever, registered Republicans outnumber registered Democrats nationwide. That expanding tent creates a more favorable electoral map for the GOP, but it also creates some difficult realities for constituencies that have long formed foundational blocs in the GOP. One such group is the pro-life movement that has anchored the social conservative vote in the GOP for the last 50-plus years. This year, however, it's different. As public opinion has shifted on abortion and pro-life sponsored legislation on abortion failed in battleground states (and even some red ones), the GOP platform for 2024 followed the lead of Donald Trump and visibly distanced itself from the pro-life position. In this interview, I sat down to chat with Baylor University's Matthew Lee Anderson and unpack a recent article he wrote for The Dispatch on the future of the pro-life movement. We discuss the shifting political realities that appear to have put the pro-life movement on its back foot, before delving into how the pro-life movement can use this time of being in the proverbial “political wilderness” to hone its outreach and messaging to the broader American culture. Churches rightly warn against gossip, but also the need to hold people accountable for their sins. Matthew Lee Anderson of Mere Fidelity argues for that certain specific circumstances may permit the use of gossip to protect a vulnerable third party. He draws from the moral and theological tradition of the church to identify specific criteria for the usage of gossip as well as a warning about the dangers of gossip. Episode Notes The Christian faith provides intellectually and existentially satisfying answers to many of life's questions. But it likewise challenges us to consider whether the things we're most curious about are really important and liberates us to ask new and better questions. Dr. Matthew Lee Anderson is convinced that the call to follow Jesus is a call to a life of questioning (to be distinguished from doubting). He writes in his book Called into Questions: Cultivating the Love of Learning within the Life of Faith: “We can only question well when we believe there are answers—but we will only live our way into the answers if we orient our questions toward the good and the true as Jesus reveals them.” In this episode, Dr. Anderson and Dr. Keith Plummer talk about the vital role a stance of questioning should play in the individual and corporate life of discipleship.

Jared Moore is the Pastor of Homesteads Baptist in Crossville, TN. In his recent book, “Lust of the Flesh,” Jared examines current movements within the American evangelical church related to sexuality. Jared takes to task various proponents of same-sex attraction within the church. He also looks to church history to give weight to this important matter. My endorsement of Jared's book: “In this accessible volume, Dr. Moore has done a tremendous work for the church today. The issue of sinful desires and lust is a fierce battleground for Christians, and many are harmed by bad teaching on these matters. Dr. Moore's contribution to the church is certain to build her up to think clearly on such crucial topics. We need not fear questions. By the grace of God, we have the safety and security to rush headlong into them and find ourselves better for it on the other side.In our embrace of questioning, we must learn to question well. In our uncertainty, we must not give up the task of walking worthy of the calling that Christ has placed upon us. We are living in the age of deconstruction. We are constantly bombarded online, in schools, and sometimes even in our homes by attitudes and arguments aimed at deconstructing our faith.  Professor Matthew Lee Anderson stopped by to show us, and the ones we love, how to grapple with doubt in a redemptive way—in a way that brings us closer and leaves us more secure in Jesus Christ. https://www.moodypublishers.com/called-into-questions/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Then they discuss the specific ethical issues of in vitro fertilization, and reflect on the technologization of fertility through the lens of C. S. Lewis's novel That Hideous Strength. Then, Susannah speaks with Pater Edmund Waldstein about the role of monasteries in Christendom, and how their witness to the supernatural life of the church complements the life of the natural family. They go on to discuss questions of political order: since grace perfects but does not destroy nature, how should we think about polity? Is an ethnostate the only “natural” polity? Should we be trying to restore the Holy Roman Empire? Pater and Susannah solve all these problems definitively.

Christians have been called a “people of the book,” yet how often do we spend time gathering together to read deeply? In a fast-paced technological world, taking time to read deeply and well, let alone alongside others, can feel like a daunting task. And while reading alone has extraordinary value (and, research shows, is intriguingly linked with spending more time with others), reading in community is a uniquely formative endeavor that shapes how we think, what we value, and our ability to have genuine and meaningful dialogue and relationship with others. The Trinity Forum hosted an Online Conversation with Matthew Lee Anderson and Anika Prather to explore the importance of reading together and the impact that such small but meaningful interactions can have on ourselves, our communities, and our civic structures.

All of us have questions about God, the purpose of life, the problem of evil, and other serious issues. How do we ask those questions in a manner that honors God, and how can Christians create communities in which people feel free to explore? It was my pleasure to interview Matthew Lee Anderson for our podcast last month. I'll start with the usual introductory matters. Matt is an Assistant Research Professor of Ethics and Theology at Baylor University's Institute for Studies of Religion and the Associate Director of Baylor in Washington. He's also an Associate Fellow at the McDonald Centre for Theology, Ethics, and Public Life at Oxford University, where he completed a D.Phil. in Christian Ethics. As you'll hear in the interview, Matt is the author of two books:  Earthen Vessels: Why Our Bodies Matter To Our Faith and The End of Our Exploring. Matt is also the founder of Mere Orthodoxy, a site that has consistently published thoughtful, irenic, and theologically informed Christian writing for over 15 years. Moreover, Matt's writing has appeared in Christianity Today, The Gospel Coalition, The Washington Post, and elsewhere. Finally, Matt's newsletter, The Path Before Us, offers moral and theological analysis of contemporary culture and politics. In our conversation, we ranged over a variety of topics, but I'd say that reflection on the moral life was a unifying theme. Below is an outline of the conversation with timestamps so that you can navigate your way to places of interest. I especially enjoyed our discussion of the role that literature can play in shaping our moral imagination beginning at the 40:34 mark. 1:54 — Matt's vision for Mere Orthodoxy and the nature of writing online10:20 — Earthen Vessels, issues related to the body19:05 — The End of Our Exploring, the distinction between doubt and inquiry, and the art of asking good questions28:13 — The work of theologian Oliver O'Donovan, author of Begotten or Made? and Resurrection and Moral Order35:37 — The task of moral reasoning40:34 — Literature and the moral life51:33 — Shakespeare1:01:47 — The value of memorization We hope you enjoy this conversation. You can look forward to others like it in the coming weeks and months. Peace, Michael SacasasAssociate DirectorStudy Center ResourcesOur Readings in the Christian Imagination reading group is now reading Alan Jacobs's The Year of Our Lord 1943, which focuses on the work of five Christian intellectuals—C. S. Lewis, W. H. Auden, T. S. Eliot, Jacques Maritain, and Simone Weil—who, in the middle of World War Two, turned their attention to the question of education and the life of the mind. We will discuss the first half the book on Monday, October 26th over Zoom at 8:00 p.m.The rest of our program is in full swing. Our Director's classes are meeting via Zoom and in-person and our Dante group meets via Zoom on Wednesday afternoons. When Arendt added ‘Ideology and Terror' to Origins in 1958, the tenor of the work changed. The elements of totalitarianism were numerous, but in loneliness she found the essence of totalitarian government, and the common ground of terror.— Earlier this year, Jay Parini reflected on his meeting with W. H. Auden:"I've learned a little in my life," he said. "Not much. But I will share with you what I do know. I hope it will help."He lit a cigarette, looked at the ceiling, then said, "I know only two things. The first is this: There is no such thing as time." He explained that time was an illusion: past, present, future. Eternity was "without a beginning or an end," and we must come to terms with what underlies time, or exists around its edges. He quoted the Gospel of John, where Jesus said: "Before Abraham was, I am." That disjunctive remark upends our notions of chronology once and for all, he told me.I listened, a bit puzzled, then asked: "So what's the second thing?""Ah, that," he said. "The second thing is simply advice. Rest in God, dear boy. Rest in God." This is a public episode. In this episode, Dr. Anderson and Shane discuss what a sexual ethic is and whether or not the body actually matters. Watch on Youtube: https://youtu.be/8YsFmkVeBR8Matthew Lee Anderson is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Baylor University's Institute for Studies of Religion, and the Associate Director of Baylor in Washington. He is an Associate Fellow at the McDonald Centre for Theology, Ethics, and Public Life at Oxford University, where he completed a D.Phil. in Christian Ethics. Academically, Anderson writes on a wide range of subjects, including pro- and anti-natalism, political theology, and bioethics. Anderson has an M.Phil. from the same university, and is a Perpetual Member of Biola University's Torrey Honors Institute. In 2005 he founded Mere Orthodoxy, a web-based magazine that provides both long- and short-form commentary on matters of religion, politics, and culture from a broadly conservative, evangelical standpoint. He is the author of two books. Earthen Vessels: Why Our Bodies Matter to Our Faith was one of the first efforts (2008) within evangelicalism to develop a robustly theological account of bodiliness. The End of our Exploring is an attempt to articulate a spirituality and theology of questioning. Anderson writes occasionally for Christianity Today, The Gospel Coalition, The Washington Post, and elsewhere. He was listed among Christianity Today's ‘33 under 33' list of younger evangelical leaders, and co-hosts Mere Fidelity, a podcast on faith, theology, and ethics. He lives in Waco, Texas, and in his spare time enjoys beating fourth-graders at basketball.

By now, you’ve probably seen the 2005 video of Donald Trump bragging to then–Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush about his aggressive groping and kissing of women. If you’re running for election as a Republican, it may have encouraged you to change your strategy. (Arizona Senator John McCain dropped his endorsement. GOP House Leader Paul Ryan has said he’ll stop campaigning for Trump.) But so far, Trump’s most vocal evangelical supporters—including James Dobson, Eric Metaxas, Tony Perkins, and Jerry Falwell—haven’t wavered in their support. (Read CT’s full report.) “The whole thing is baffling yet predictable,” said Jemar Tisby, the president and co-founder of the Reformed African American Network. While allegations of Trump’s previous sexual attacks on women currently make the news, his campaign won the primary while proposing a ban on Muslims from entering the US and attacking a Mexican-American judge for his heritage, actions indicative of a larger thread in Republican history, said Tisby. “That Donald Trump, out of 16 candidates, would end up being the nominee is on one hand utterly perplexing. On the other hand it doesn’t surprise me in the sense that what he’s playing to what has been present in the GOP for decades,” he said. But will this be true in the future? “I’ve seen a lot of people want to say ‘The Religious Right is finished. They don’t have the clout that they had,’” said Matthew Lee Anderson, the founder of Mere Orthodoxy. “I think that it’s way too premature to say that sort of thing. We do need a couple of election cycles…One of the things that I will watch very carefully will be what happens at Liberty University on November 8.” Tisby and Anderson join Morgan and Christianity Today’s editor-in-chief, Mark Galli, on Quick to Listen this week to discuss what has and has not changed for evangelicals following the latest Trump scandal, how Billy Graham’s political philosophy shaped Christian engagement, and what personal blind spots have been revealed in their own lives over the course of the election.

The Calling
Matthew Lee Anderson's Vision for Top-Shelf Ministry

“The church is anti-intellectual.” If you're a church leader—and especially if you're an evangelical—you've probably heard that claim a thousand times before. (Heck, we've even made it.) But while the prophetic shadow of Mark Noll's The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind may still loom large over the landscape of American Christianity, a growing number of bright lights are giving an increasingly thoughtful church reason to hope. One of those lights is Matthew Lee Anderson. You probably know Anderson as the founder and erstwhile regular contributor to the blog Mere Orthodoxy, where he's written lengthy essays on everything from Trump's implications for evangelicals to sexual ethics to why “deep reading” is vital for a robust faith. His most recent book, The End of Our Exploring (Moody, 2013), argues for the importance of question-asking to the Christian faith, urging a dogged pursuit of intellectual integrity that, as he says in this week's episode of The Calling, has implications for local church ministry. What does that kind of top-shelf ministry actually look like? Find out by joining CT managing editor Richard Clark as he chats with Anderson about teaching Sunday school, evangelicalism's bad rap, and why we reason about what we love.
