Week 8 has arrived and Y-Option has you covered with college football through the lens of the West Coast along with special guest Max Browne. To kick things off, we think Saturday has the best individual matchup of the season with Travis Hunter of Colorado facing Tetairoa McMillan of Arizona. Last year, I was able to call that game and it came down to the final snap and this year, all 32 NFL teams will be glued to every snap when the nation's top DB lines up opposite the nation's top WR. I'm off to the east coast for UCLA at Rutgers on FS1, as both teams need a win. The rest of the slate is full of sneaky good games, trap games or must-win games. Action with the West Coast schools kicks off Friday night with Oregon at Purdue in a classic trap game while the action wraps up Saturday with UNLV at Oregon State and an old school Mountain West Conference game with Utah and TCU. Jim Thornby and I dive into the X's and O's of each game, the narrative around Dan Lanning's “loophole” shared around social media and Cam Rising's impact at Utah. Thanks to our founding partner 76, we also had Max Browne, the lead analyst at The CW, join the podcast to share his insight on the ACC and Pac-12 and explain how a fun social media post turned into the biggest interview of his career with the Governor of Minnesota & possible U.S. Vice President Tim Walz at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Max shared insights into how he even got the interview, as well details on their conversation. We also dove into the concept around being a backup QB, how to navigate the world of social media in that role and the reality of being at your best when you do step onto the field. As always, be sure to follow @YOptionfb all weekend long as our social media is dialed in!Thanks for the love and support, off to Piscataway!YogiThis episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor Ren.This podcast is a Best Coast Media production.Y-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. College football analyst talks 2024 season, Sam Darnold, and more.
The Helium Boys Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino back behind the microphones to break down and react to Miller Moss being named the Trojans' starting quarterback after USC announced Lincoln Riley's decision Monday evening. The podcast also features an assessment of other notable position battles for the Trojans as they head into mock game week with the season opener less than two weeks away, and later in the episode, Chris breaks out the Over/Under betting lines to get Shotgun's feel on how the USC team will perform this season. This Helium Boys episode opens in a unique way as Shotgun is too excited about the impending college football season and skips right past the podcast staple opening 'Two-Minute Drill.' Instead the podcast duo jump right into the conversation about the impending season and Riley's decision to name his starting quarterback. Chris nearly gets pinned in the corner when thrown a potential comparison of this year's quarterback battle and decision with the one Clay Helton made in 2016 choosing Max Browne to start over Sam Darnold to open the season. Chris and Shotgun also break down some of the other position battles for the Trojans, including a couple like the right guard and inside linebacker spots that seem as if a decision may have already been made and a couple others on the defensive side that will continue at least for the next two weeks. After a break, Chris quizzes Shotgun with his Over/Under lines. The Helium Boys also answer your mailbag questions about recruiting, quarterbacks and the potential of the Trojans' offense this season. Max Browne's dream to play in the NFL began in kindergarten, his trajectory began in 6th grade and by 12th grade, he was the National Player of the Year. His parents laid out a process with unconditional support, humility and ingrained the effort required to build confidence and achieve success. However, his college experience revealed that sometimes hard work and talent are not enough. Declared a “bust” by many, he became frustrated with being frustrated and made the choice to invest in his mental wellbeing and community without football. The skill set he developed on the field gave him the confidence to become risk tolerant, bet on himself and learn to, “treat success the same way he treats failure.” He shares his life post football to motivate and inspire others that, “life can be amazing even when Plan A doesn't work out.” @maxbrowne
