Maxine Clark came up with the idea and opened the first Build a Bear store inside the St. Louis Galleria in under a year. But it wasn't her first experience in retail. The Florida native moved to St. Louis with her job with The May Company and would go on to be president of Payless Shoes. In her career she became an innovator in the retail industry. She joined me on the podcast for an in-depth conversation inside Delmar Divine, the former St. Luke's Hospital turned hub for non-profits. Maxine's passion for life and improving the lives of those around her shines through each of her endeavors and she's got quite the story to share.

On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined by Kristin Johnson and Maxine Clark to talk about equality. KEY TAKEAWAYS Equality is something that we're born with, it's our birthright, but depending on the circumstances it doesn't always show up. But it is something that is ingrained in the human condition, and I passionately believe in it. When I was a child my mother was a civil rights activist who had worked during WWII for Eleanor Roosevelt as a secretary who traveled with her and my Mum learned a lot from her, When she moved back to Miami after Franklin died, she married my Father and she and several of her friends started a school for children with Down's Syndrome to stop them being put in asylums. That was my introduction to the idea that we all have something to contribute and a reason for being on this planet. Growing up when I did in the 50s and 60s it was much more equitable, there was a much larger middle class, you had people in your neighbourhood who were doctors, lawyers, policemen, truck drivers, my father was an electrician. You didn't know what people made, you didn't know their politics, you just lived in a neighbourhood with people, humans, friends, dogs and cats, and all the other things that go along with being a child in those days. I feel like we're all craving that connection, that needing to be seen as a person not as a skin colour, a gender, as tall or short, not as 17 or 75 years old, but as a human being that has something to contribute. That's how my family lived, I didn't know there were differences in people just because they looked different than me – everybody looked different than me. I have a million questions when I meet someone: Where did you come from? How long have you lived here? How many times have you moved? In asking questions you find common ground and by listening and not talking yourself you find out so much about life and you didn't have to do it yourself, you can live through someone else's experiences. That's how I see it: I'm a problem solver, like both my Mum and Dad, if something's broken and I know there's a solution somewhere – or I don't know yet and I want to see if somebody else is fixing it properly – I'll go and do that, or I'll bring people together to do it. BEST MOMENTS ‘Equality is giving everyone a chance no matter where they start from, where they come from, it's the American Dream and a dream throughout the world.'‘We all want to be safe, we all want to have friends, we all want to live in a nice home in a nice street where there's good schools, shopping and transportation.'‘We have so much potential in each of us.'‘Our job is to make sure that we see everybody as an individual.' Delmar Divine is the brainchild of Build-A-Bear Workshop founder and philanthropist Maxine Clark. Occupying the site of the old St. Luke's Hospital just north of Delmar Blvd. in St. Louis' West End neighborhood, the project is Clark's way to bridge the “Delmar Divide.” Delmar Divine Executive Director Jorge Riopedre and CEO/Founder of SoulFisher Ministries Shawntelle Fisher discuss how the effort is meeting the needs of local nonprofits and neighboring communities.
Carol Daniel continues her in-depth look at Delmar Divine. We hear from Build a Bear founder Maxine Clark who talks legacy and reviving the region

Stuff it, fluff it, stitch it, dress it: Build-a-Bear Founder and former CEO Maxine Clark built a retail-entertainment empire by letting people make their own furry friends. Two hundred million of them. What's the secret to her success? Listen as she tells EconTalk's Russ Roberts how she developed a customer-focused culture, why she sought to join (and not beat) her competition, and about some of the (seriously) strange things people have stuffed into their bears.

By: David M. Foster, CFP®, CAP®Hello, listeners, and welcome to the 16th episode of the Gateway Giving Podcast! My guest today is Maxine Clark. You may or may not be familiar with her name, but, especially if you are from the St. Louis area, you are almost certainly familiar with her work. She is the founder of Build-A-Bear Workshop.Since she stepped down from her role as Chief Executive Bear in 2013, she has been spending her time using her wealth and influence to improve the lives of others in the St. Louis region, primarily through the foundation she and her husband, Bob Fox, founded in 2004. In particular, right now she is focused on putting the finishing touches on the Delmar Divine; a mixed-use development for social innovators that will provide office space and shared resources for nonprofits, as well as approximately 150 affordable apartments designed for young, diverse professionals.I wanted to have Maxine on the podcast, not only because I wanted to hear more about her work with the Delmar Divine, but also because I am fascinated by how people with significant wealth think about the opportunity and/or responsibility they have to use that wealth to give back to the community that helped create it in the first place. One of my missions in life is to convince people with excess wealth to give more of that wealth away to people who aren't related to them, so I want to know how I can help to replicate Maxine's attitude about philanthropy and the responsibility we all have to one another across our region and our country. As you'll hear in this interview, it's impossible to interact with Maxine and not come away from it feeling more optimistic about the future of St. Louis. This was a delightful conversation, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!As always, if you have any questions, requests, or suggestions for people or organizations for me to interview, you can email me at david@gatewaywealthstl.com. Entrepreneurs are often known for working around the clock to keep their business afloat. But is sacrificing sleep for work actually what’s best for business? According to Jeff Gish, an Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship at the University of Central Florida, the answer is no. Gish’s research shows that a lack of sleep can have a negative impact on decision making. “We found that when you're sleep deprived, you still come up with the same amount of ideas, but they're just not as good. So they aren't as commercially viable when you're sleep deprived. And you're more likely to fall for or pursue an ill fated business opportunity,” Gish said. On the latest episode of the Speaking Startup podcast, we dig into the subject of sleep in entrepreneurship. Plus, we hear from Maxine Clark, the founder of Build-A-Bear Workshop. The entrepreneur made her name building a retail empire but has focused her recent efforts on enabling other entrepreneurs and bridging racial and economic divides in St. Louis.

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to another edition of The Avid Reader. Our guest today is Maxine Beneba Clarke, author of Foreign Soil, published by 37 INK/Atria on January 3rd. Maxine is a novelist, poet and editor living in Melbourne Australia. She was the Hazel Rowley Fellowship winner for Biography and also won the 2013 Victorian Premier Award for an Unpublished Manuscript. Foreign Soil is Maxine’s first book. And is a collection of 11 short stories, stories that are full of pain, meanness, nostalgia, fear, monsters, sometimes happiness and sometimes a bit of a harbinger of what America has done to itself with our election of Donald Trump. The stories are engaging, surprising, emotionally riveting and haunting and each conveys something that at the time of reading the first word, one didn’t expect. Hard to do. They take place all over the world. America, London, Australia, Jamaica, Africa, yet they all knife us with a stark reality about the world around us, not necessarily a world we choose, but a world that increasingly and most recently, closes in around us. These stories are different than what you’ve read lately, and for that reason alone (amongst many others) I encourage you to come by the shop and pick up a copy.
Shep Hyken interviews Maxine Clark, the Founder and former Chief Executive Bear at Build-A-Bear Workshops. Maxine opened her first store in 1997 when a ten-year-old girl suggested she open a store where kids could "build" their own teddy bears. The successful chain grew to more than 400 stores worldwide. That story by itself is amazing, but Maxine shares much more as she talks about her background, role models who influenced her, tough decisions she has made and her belief in giving back.
