Spotting food allergy signs quickly can be tricky, especially since they don't manifest in everyone in the same way. But it's so important to be able to identify the symptoms of food allergies, because a whopping 1 in 13 kids have at least ONE food allergy. And that number is surprisingly high for adults, too. Food allergies are an IgE immune-mediated reaction. Essentially, your body sees a particular food as an invader, so it goes on attack by releasing chemicals like histamine. So if you've ever wondered what causes food allergies, common food allergy signs, and whether you can prevent them altogether, this episode is for you! My guest is not only an expert in food allergies, but she's also a mom raising a child with life-threatening food allergies. Her invaluable information and insight about what's driving food allergies in kids and adults is really sobering, some of which may surprise you (as it did me). My guest today is Ruchi Gupta, MD, MPH, a Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a Clinical Attending at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. Dr. Gupta has over 20 years of experience as a board-certified pediatrician and health researcher and currently serves as the founding director of the Center for Food Allergy & Asthma Research (CFAAR). She is world-renowned for her research on the epidemiology, economic impact, prevention, and management of allergic conditions, and strives to find answers and shape policies surrounding these conditions in order to reduce burden and improve health equity. Do you have personal experience with a food allergy? Are you comfortable identifying food allergy signs should they arise? Share your questions, comments + experiences in the comments below! In This Episode: Dr Gupta's personal experience with food allergies What's driving the explosion in food allergies (in children and adults) Differences between food allergies, food intolerances and food sensitivities Food allergy signs and anaphylaxis signs (you might overlook) Anaphylaxis treatment options (why to NOT use Benadryl if you notice food allergy signs) Shocking food allergy trigger (NEW RESEARCH) Updated food allergy prevention tips for parents Quotes “About 8% of kids have food allergy. Now that's about 1 in 13, or 2 in every classroom. So it's a lot.” “If you only give Benadryl, it may mask some of the symptoms because it takes away maybe some of the rash and some of the itching, but the reaction continues to happen in your body.” “One of the biggest hypotheses right now is if a food is introduced through your skin before your gut, then your immune system goes on the attack.” Links Find Dr. Gupta online | Instagram | Instagram | Facebook | Facebook | Twitter | Twitter Find Yobee online and on Instagram Get Dr. Gupta's book, Food Without Fear Healthy Skin Show ep. 269: Allergy Testing: Everything You Need To Know w/ Dr. Stacy Silvers Healthy Skin Show ep. 321: Before You Invest in Food Sensitivity Testing (What You Need To Know) Healthy Skin Show ep. 291: Can You Stop Eczema, Allergies + Asthma In Kids? w/ Dr. Chris Thompson Healthy Skin Show ep. 265: Problem with Antihistamines That No One Tells You w/ Dr. Chris Thompson, MD Healthy Skin Show ep. 262: Why Your Child's Risk of Allergies, Eczema + Asthma Is So High w/ Meenal Lele

Soon after Meenal Lele's first child was diagnosed with multiple food allergies, new research upended decades of allergy advice. The LEAP study found that consistently adding allergenic foods beginning at four months of age could drastically reduce the rate of developing food allergies. The American Academy of Pediatrics subsequently began recommending that parents give allergenic foods to their babies early and often. As Meenal struggled to prepare allergens three times a week for her second child, she realized how hard it was to mix nuts into baby food without exposing his older brother or contaminating the blender. There had to be a better way! She took my background in chemical engineering and worked with food scientists to develop a solution. Lil Mixins is specially prepared to blend smoothly into breastmilk, formula, or baby foods, so it's simple to give to infants. They use the best quality ingredients and no additives or sweeteners – the same way you would make it yourself, but without the mess. And they've made it so one jar of each product will last from early infancy until your baby can start to eat whole foods. Their goal is to make early introduction easier for busy moms. What is early allergen introduction for babies? Are you still confused about when to feed your baby allergens? Over the past few decades, there has been quite a shift in thinking about the early introduction of food allergens for babies, so your confusion is wholly justified. Dr. G dives into this exact topic and talks to two professionals, Meenal Lele and Dr. Katie Marks-Cogan, in the field of early introduction. She explores why the guidelines for introducing allergens have changed and how to introduce allergens safely and consistently.  What we cover in this podcast about the early introduction of food allergens: What inspired Meenal and Katie to develop products to help parents with early allergen introduction? What is early food introduction? Why are we no longer avoiding food allergens in babies?  What studies have shaped the protocol change around introducing allergens to babies? How does this impact 'high-risk' children? The challenges for the studies and compliance hurdles parents faced.   Why do babies develop food allergies? What hypotheses point to the increase in food allergies in children over the past three decades? The guidelines for early introduction of allergens. How to feed allergens to infants safely? Why do you want to consider the early introduction of allergens with your babies?  The role of food allergies in a baby's eczema: if your baby has eczema, will they develop food allergies? When to see an allergist for your baby? What is the best practice for diagnosing a baby's allergies, and why is testing not always appropriate? How to work with your medical team and rely on something other than online information.  Fundamental studies about the early introduction of allergens: The LEAP study, EAT study, PETIT study Guest Bios Meenal Lele is the founder of Lil Mixins, an allergy prevention company for babies. With experience as a food allergy parent and clinical knowledge, she created the company to provide options for parents introducing allergenic foods to their babies. If you've had children, you may have been given tips (probably unsolicited) about feeding Baby, but what does the science really say about baby advice? Does your child have early eczema or food allergies? Post something you learned in your journey in the comments to help other parents! In this episode: The scary stat of how many kids will develop a chronic immune disease How eczema, food allergies and asthma are all related What is the best time window to introduce common allergenic foods to a baby (this goes against common advice) Why staph and eczema can go hand in hand along with food allergies What should parents do to hopefully minimize these issues? Quotes “Foods become an allergen when your body mistakes a totally normal, safe food and decides it's a parasite.” [12:52] “I feel like we're so unwilling to be even momentarily uncomfortable that we end up throwing things at a problem that don't even help. And that's the case for us with antibiotics. In Sweden, they made doctors report every single time they were using antibiotics, and why, and it cut the reuse of antibiotics by 75%, meaning probably for us in the United States, three out of four uses of antibiotics are completely unnecessary." I learned a lot from my guest today, and I mean A LOT. For example, I had no idea that humans have something called the "Adaptive Immune System." Nor did I know — although I had my suspicions — why it seems that everyone is allergic to everything these days, yet, growing up in the 70s and 80s, no one was allergic to anything. My guest, Meenal Lele, host of the fantastic podcast "Fixing Sick," received two back-to-back Science degrees from Wharton and UPenn in the same year. That background came in extremely handy when her newborn nearly died from an undiagnosed food allergy. She went into advocacy beast mode, taking on the food allergy ecosystem. The result is years of research, data, and new facts that blew my mind and will hopefully blow yours. Did you know that no one is born with food allergies? And that, through shitty US-only ingredients in our food and the hyper-sanitization and "Over-Purell-ification" of society, we've completely eroded our natural immunity to ordinary things that our species has historically never had to worry about for thousands of years? Necessity is the mother of invention, and Meenal's ingenuity has resulted in her founding Lil Mixins, purveyors of solutions to help stop food allergies in infants before they start. Yes, you heard right. Enjoy the show.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Seeds aren't something we often think about feeding babies, toddlers, or big kids, yet in recent years, there's been a growing interest in them. One of the most common questions for parents of newborns is how can you prevent a food allergy? A whopping 5.6 million kids in the U.S. have food allergies, and for their parents, keeping them safe is no easy feat. They spend so much of their time preventing accidental exposures and allergic reactions. They avoid foods, read food labels, ask questions, talk to people who care for their child, have care plans, and carry epinephrine.  Although the guidance for preventing a food allergy was to avoid allergenic foods for a period of time after starting solids, in recent years, research shows that early introduction of allergenic foods is actually effective.  In this episode, I sat down with Meenal Lele, founder and CEO of Lil Mixins and a mom to a child with a food allergy. As a busy working mom, Meenal knew there had to be a better way to make early introduction easy, so she took the research, and her knowledge of food science, and developed infant powders that are protein supplements which make early introduction of peanut, tree nut, and egg protein simple and easy.  Meenal and I talk about a baby's microbiome, gut health, and what it has to do with food allergies. She also talks about her ah-ah moment when she knew, without a doubt, that she had a solution that parents needed and pediatricians would recommend, her journey to launch and grow her company, challenges she encountered, and what the future holds. We also talk about her new book,“The Baby and the Biome: How the Tiny World Inside Your Child Holds the Secret to Their Health," and new research that is likely to identify a cure for food allergy. Welcome  4:00 Let's talk about your story! 4:46 We hear a lot about the gut microbiome, but why is it something that new parents need to know about? 6:28 What do you think about infant probiotics? 8:35 What are the causes of infant gut disruption? 10:32 What has changed in recent years and what do new parents need to know about introducing allergens to babies?  13:20 The protein in peanuts can trigger food allergies—explain! 16:30 Can food allergies and other immune conditions be prevented?  17:48 Is early introduction effective for all allergens? 19:34 Are there babies for which early introduction isn't a good idea? 21:33 Can food allergies be cured? 26:26 Why did you start Lil Mixins? 28:27 What is Lil Mixins? 28:56 Did you conduct market research to determine that parents would buy the product? 30:39 What were the steps you took to get it off the ground? 31:55 What were the challenges you encountered that were also big learning lessons? 34:05 What advice do you have for other parents who may want to start this type of business? 35:09 What is the future for the company? 36:00 Your new book, “The Baby and The Biome” is coming out in September—what can readers expect? LINKS MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Julie mentions her interview with Dr. Tracy Shafizadeh from Evivo about infant gut health.  Meenal mentions this 2021 study that found that gut microbes trigger inflammation that exacerbates brain injury in extremely premature infants.  Meenal talks about this 2016 study that found babies from Russia had different gut microbes than babies in Finland and Estonia, and a higher incidence rate of e.coli.  Meenal talks about the LEAP study, which found early introduction of peanuts can reduce the risk of peanut allergy.  Meenal talks about her new book, “The Baby and the Biome: How the Tiny World Inside Your Child Holds the Secret to Their Health.” Learn more about Lil Mixins on their website. Meenal Lele is the founder and CEO of Lil Mixins, an early food allergen introduction solution.  When her 10-month-old son erupted in hives and his lip swelled after he ate an egg, she and her husband were baffled. All signs pointed to an allergic reaction, yet their baby had just been tested for food allergies and the results were negative for egg.  One week after her son’s first food allergy reaction, the results of the Learning Early About Peanuts (LEAP) Study was released and showed that feeding foods in infancy can reduce their risk of developing a food allergy to that food.  She knew she could do better to help her second son and wanted to help prevent the onset of food allergies in all children, so set out to develop Lil Mixins.  This episode is a wealth of information about the early introduction of foods, gut microbiomes, allergy testing, and food challenges.
