In this episode of the Rox Lyfe podcast, I get to chat with Meg Martin (@megsutherland) Meg recently became the HYROX Mixed Doubles world champion in her age group – along with her husband Will Martin – when they finished in a time of 54:58 in Nice. At the time that was only her second ever HYROX race. The day before we recorded this Meg also finished 2nd overall in the open in Melbourne. But not only is she an impressive athlete but at the age of 26 has already done so much. She's set up run clubs, an apparel brand, coaching, shes done a Mega Goggins challenge, a 100 mile run, and lots more. We talk about all those things, her training, what shes been doing to improve her running so much since her first HYROX and lots more. It was a great chat with a fantastic person who is energising, inspiring and a savage of an athlete, who has her eyes set on the Elite 15, and I think you'll really enjoy it.
There are only around 51 Rice's whales left in the world. And they're the only whale that stays in one country's territory: they live exclusively in the Gulf of Mexico…in US waters. A uniquely American whale. This also means the responsibility to protect these whales lies with the United States, but are we protecting them? That's a question NPR Investigations reporter, Chiara Eisner had. With so few Rice's whales left on the planet, she wanted to know what–if anything–is being done to prevent their extinction. Today on Sea Change, we hear the story of this shy, baleen whale who was only discovered as a new species a couple of years ago. And is already swimming in controversy. This episode was hosted by Carlyle Calhoun, and edited by Meg Martin and Halle Parker. Our sound designer is Maddie Zampanti. Sea Change is a WWNO and WRKF production. There are more than a thousand miles of levees and floodgates lining each side of the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Thousands of dams also hold back water and sediment throughout the Mississippi basin. But the thing is, you can't totally harness a river such as the Mississippi. And, research has shown that our efforts to tame the river have actually made our risk of flooding worse when you add climate change to the mix. As we experience worsening impacts from climate change, we're wondering: How can we rethink engineering? Instead of trying to control nature, can we design with nature? Today on Sea Change, we talk to MacArthur award-winning landscape architect, Kate Orff, and renowned environmental scientist, Don Boesch, about how they envision a future where instead of concrete, we turn to nature to protect us. Produced by Carlyle Calhoun who co-hosts the show with Halle Parker. Our managing producer is Carlyle Calhoun. Editing help from Meg Martin. Our sound designer is Maddie Zampanti. We've kicked off our Summer series on the Family Brand Podcast, and guess who's back? It's Meg Martin, our first repeat guest. Meg and her family have this fascinating tradition of Screen-Free Summers. She's here to share all about it, including the reasons behind this decision and the amazing impact it's had on their family life. Now, Screen-Free Summer isn't about completely ditching screens. Instead, it's about cultivating a thoughtful and intentional relationship with technology. Meg was genuinely concerned about the possibility of screen addiction, especially in young boys, which sparked this unique tradition. She was determined to prevent her home from turning into a nest of 'screen zombies', and that's how Screen-Free Summers began. Meg embarked on this journey as a preemptive measure, aiming to address screen addiction before it took hold in her children. Like many of us, she was aware of the unsettling statistics on children's screen time and noticed similar tendencies in her own usage. Being a proactive person, she decided it was time for a change. Meg highlighted the addictive nature of screens - something we can all relate to when we find ourselves absorbed in social media or binging on Netflix. But it's this very challenge that transforms Screen-Free Summer from a protective strategy into an exciting family adventure. Transitioning into Screen-Free Summers wasn't an overnight process for Meg's family. They used incentives like LEGO sets or a ticket to Hamilton to make the shift more appealing. Recognizing that changing behaviors, especially regarding screen use, is no easy task, these rewards helped to not just make screen-free time bearable, but something the kids would actually look forward to. There's more to our chat with Meg than just being screen-free. We also shared some of the fun activities Meg's family engages in when screens are off the table. So, hit play to discover more about this screen-free journey. Here's to a wonderful summer, perhaps with a bit less screen time! See you on the next episode! Welcome to the Lancaster Story Slam podcast! Our June Story Slam was themed “Awkward Pause!” We had so much fun listening to stories about those awkward moments in people’s lives. It was fascinating to hear people’s takes on this theme and we’ve chosen three of our favorite stories from the night. First up, Tony Crocamo won the Story Slam with his awkward love story. If you love storytelling because you are a writer, check out HippoCamp 2017! HippoCamp is a three day conference for creative non-fiction writers, and this year features keynote speakers Tobias Wolff and Dinty W. Moore. The conference includes special breakout sessions on writing, publishing and even storytelling. It’s all happening right in downtown Lancaster this September eighth through tenth. Our next story is from first-time storyteller Marc Anthony. Marc cracked us up by telling this story of how his celebrity crush led to some very awkward moments. Sometimes awkward moments can bubble up into rage. That’s what happened to Meg Martin in this Awkward Moments story. A word of warning - Meg’s story contains foul language so turn the dial down if kids are listening. Meg’s story was a crowd favorite and her mannerisms on stage made the story even better. You can watch Meg’s story and all our stories on the Lancaster Story Slam YouTube page. Our next Story Slam will be Tuesday, July 25th and the theme is “That One Time!” This is really an open theme - tell us that epic story you always share with family and friends! Our events are held at Tellus360 and we start telling stories at 8pm. If you enjoyed the podcast, we’d love it if you you would leave a rating and review on iTunes, or let your friends know they can listen to Lancaster folks telling true tales each month. Thanks for listening!
Welcome to the York Story Slam podcast, where we feature select stories from our monthly open mic storytelling events in York, Pennsylvania. On June 21, 2016, 10 storytellers shared their stories with our audience at Holy Hound Taproom in downtown York. Our theme for the evening was The Naked Truth. Meg Martin won with a story about being completely honest with her friend about that friend's boyfriend. Next up is Bryan R. Caine. Bryan told us about the teacher who told him and his classmates the truth about sex. Our final story on this month’s podcast comes from photojournalist Jason Plotkin, who recounts a time he pissed off some firefighters while trying to get a shot. Our next event is scheduled for Tuesday, July 19th, when we’ll draw 10 names from the hat to tell stories based on the theme “Brush With Fame.” Remember you can purchase tickets on our website, YorkStorySlam.com, and while you’re there, you can sign up for our monthly newsletter. You can also follow us on twitter at @yorkstoryslam, as well as on Facebook, and watch videos of all the stories from our events on our YouTube channel. Agent Alvin - August 2009 Studio Mix Panda presents Agent Alvin. The acclaimed New Zealand Drum N Bass producer is just finishing off collaborations with Viper Recording's own Futurebound which will hit this year. Agent Alvin's single "Don't Look Back" has become a straight-out Drum N Bass hit. Alvin has mixed his most recent work exclusively for Panda Drum N Bass TV. Tune in to hear New Zealand's best. Out now: Agent Alvin - Super Highway (Hospital Records) Out now: Agent Alvin - Wicked Man (Viper Recordings) Out now: Agent Alvin - Don't Look Back (Viper Recordings) Out soon: Agent Alvin & Futurebound - Untitled (Viper Recordings) █ ABOUT █ Music has always been a part of Agent Alvins life. Alvin aka Warren Field was brought up on a steady diet of classical composers, later giving way to the experimentation of jazz, rock, funk and hip-hop. It was in his teens that he picked up the guitar and set upon learning everything he could about the music he was listening to. The guitar would have to give way to samplers and keyboards however when Field caught the rave bug in the late 90`s. His first tune, a laid-back dub affair, was released by New Zealands LOOP recordings, gaining nation-wide airplay and hinting at a sign of things to come. In 2004, he released his debut album on New Zealands Capital Records, featuring Spikey Tee, Ruth Minuit, MC Kyla and Meg Martin to great critical acclaim. The self-titled album was nominated for best Electronic release in New Zealands 2005 B-net Awards. It was around the same time that Alvin released his first Drum & Bass 12 with his debut release on the New Zealand based Random Recordings. Fast forward to 2006. It was a big year for the Agent, with tunes released on labels as diverse as the legendary Full Cycle, Klute's imprint Commercial Suicide, Gain, G2 and Resin Records. His tunes were getting airplay on the BBC's Radio 1 by Zane Lowe, Grooverider, Annie Mac and Ras Kwame. As well as high radio play, DJ's such as High Contrast, London Electricity, Roni Size, Pendulum, DJ Craze, The Scratch Perverts and countless others have been playing his music all over the world cementing him as a serious player in Drum and Bass. 2008 heralded the debut release for Agent Alvin on the highly regarded Hospital Records. Super Highway was released on the Friendly Fire EP alongside tracks by Blame, Makoto & T-Ak and Fracture & Survival.
