Do you try to coach or control your kids in friendships? Whether sending them off to Kindergarten or College there are so many opportunities along the way to help them be good friends and pick good friends.  Today we are revisiting an amazing conversation with Sissy Goff and David Thomas discussing how to help our kids foster friendships.  As licensed counselors, working at DayStar Counseling Center in Nashville, they provide support, encouragement, and compassion to children, adolescents, and families in need through counseling. This episode has advice at every turn for every age and stage. David talks about dropping his son off at college and how to be a coach - not a fixer. We discuss shifting from focusing on how to get friends to how to be a good friend. Sissy breaks down the girl issues that arise with anxiety, feelings of isolation or being left out, and moms who sometimes care more than their daughters about certain social situations. This is a perfect episode heading into back-to-school season as we prepare to navigate relationships alongside our kids.  Connect with David Thomas and Sissy Goff:  Website:  Raising Boys and Girls Facebook: Raising Boys and Girls Instagram:  Sissy Goff (@sissygoff) and Raising Boys and Girls (@raisingboysandgirls) Podcast: Podcast | Raising Boys and Girls Summer of Mentorship Discussion Questions: What stood out to you in the week's episode? Ask them how they are doing on that scale and if they are looking for people with those same qualities. Can you name one issue one of your kids is having in this area and what ideas this episode brought up for you to try?  Are you praying for your kids' friendships and connections? Today I am SO excited to share with you my conversation with David Thomas. David is an author, a speaker, and a counselor at Daystar Counseling in Nashville, TN. In this conversation, David shares such incredible wisdom, and insight based on his experience as a father of three, and twenty-five years of walking with and working with kids that have come in and out of his office. In all of his work, including the incredible Raising Boys and Girls podcast that he co-hosts with fellow Daystar counselors Sissy Goff and Melissa Trevathan, and his books Wild Things: The Art of Nurturing Boys : A Practical Guide to Understanding the Way, The Mind, The Heart of a Boy and his latest book Raising Emotionally Strong Boys: Tools Your Son Can Build on for Life David shares his passion for boys to be seen for who they truly are from the inside out. These resources are also dedicated to equipping parents and other adults who have young kids in their lives to be able to practically connect with these young hearts and help navigate what they're experiencing as they grow. He shares with us some of those insights and a flyover of the five stages of development we see through a boys life from birth until fully developed maturity in their early-mid twenties, and how we as the adults in their lives can meet them where they are all along the way as well as what challenges they may be facing as they grow.  If navigating raising kids wasn't already a challenge, because it has always been a sanctifying experience,  statistics that David and his partners at Daystar have found show that we are experiencing an epidemic of anxiety in children. So David is passionate about helping us adults think through how can we pivot and be proactive in the emotional lives of kids instead of reactive when we start to really see some signs that something is going on. David says “All behavior is communication,” so with that in mind he tries to peel back the layers and look underneath the behaviors to get to the heart of what's really going on, and also taking into account the hard wiring of how boys in particular process emotion and anxiety in their bodies.  Also, please know this episode isn't just for parents of boys, it has such helpful info for all kids of multiple ages, and its also not just for parents! There's such good stuff here, and I cannot wait for you to hear it.  No matter where you are in this journey, don't forget that you matter, and your story matters, and the Lord will complete the work He has begun in you, and in the lives of the kids you love.  Episode Sponsor: Tony Crabtree of Crabtree Homes with Exit Realty Home buyer guide: http://bit.ly/buyersguidecrabtreehomes Seller guide: http://bit.ly/sellerguidecrabtreehomes Facebook Instagram Website YouTube Connecting with David and Daystar Counseling:  Daystar Counseling in Nashville (This is how you can reach out for a consult with David) Facebook Instagram Raising Boys and Girls Podcast  Website  References: -Wild Things: The Art of Nurturing Boys : A Practical Guide to Understanding the Way, The Mind, The Heart of a Boy -Sissy Goff  -Young Life -Stephen James (co-author of Wild Things) -Raising Emotionally Strong Boys: Tools Your Son Can Build on for Life Are My Kids On Track? -Raising Worry-Free Girls  -David and Sissy working through the stages of development on the Raising Boys & Girls Podcast began with this episode, and then the following 8 podcasts are dedicated to each stage of development for boys AND girls.  -Feelings Chart -Strong & Smart Workbook -Phil Herndon and Sage Hill Counseling (Phil was on the podcast in episode 50 ) -”The Heart of the Matter” by Don Henley  -Sissy's workbook Braver, Stronger, Smarter Scripture Reference:  Philippians 1:6- He will complete the work He began in you. ---- JOIN OUR PATREON COMMUNITY!!!! Perdão na Prática O John Gottman tem uma frase famosa (fantástica) que diz assim: "Admita quando estiver errado, e cale a boca quando estiver certo." Infelizmente, a minha tendência é exatamente a contrária! Ela disse que retirou as frases do currículo Character First. David Thomas joins me for Episode 91. You may remember him from Episode 51 when we talked about raising boys. David has over 20 years of experience counseling kids and families. He’s written 7 books including the newest one, Are My Kids On Trackwhich he wrote with Sissy Goff and Melissa Trevathan where they breakdown the emotional, social and spiritual milestones that kids need to reach. We spend our time together chatting about the four emotional milestones: vocabulary, perspective, empathy and resourcefulness. So with that, we talk about how to equip your kids with an accurate emotional vocabulary, how to help them register emotional pain, how to help them problem solve and how failure and fear are actually necessary in building empathy and courage. If you have ever felt overwhelmed with parenting, I think this conversation will put you at ease.  Takeaways From Our Conversation: I appreciated his advice as to where to start. I am so thankful that his first step was to celebrate what you are already doing. Because, we all know that parenting can feel overwhelming—even working on your own self care in regards to this topic can feel overwhelming. So the fact that you are listening to this or reading the book or having conversations about this is worth celebrating. I want to give each one of you a high five. So as you start to think through how to help your kids reach these different milestones, remember to celebrate where you are and what you are already doing. Pay attention to what's going on inside of you. You can only pass on to your kids what you already possess.  In regulating emotions, model for them the things they don’t yet know, that way they see that emotions are normal and good part of life. Give a dedicated space to sort out their emotions. Use the phase "yellow light" as a cue to let your kid know to pause. Consider getting a dog as a means to help them regulate their emotions. We have to let our kids learn to problem solve for themselves.  Failure and fear both get a bad wrap. We need to reframe that. These are good things. Fear is the birthplace of courage. You can’t be courageous if you never face fear. You want to be a resilient which means you have to stand face to face with failure. You won’t be compassionate unless you land on your face sometimes. That is one of the best teachers of empathy. Pray for failure for your kids. What would it look like if rather than praying for our kids to be happy, we prayed for our kids to be strong? (which is an invitation for failure.) Pray for ourselves that we will allow the space for our kids to be resourceful. We are sometimes too busy trying to be their resources. With that, ask good questions in those moments like what do you want to do with that? What’s your game plan? What are you thinking? What did you enjoy about this episode? What was your takeaway. Let's continue the conversation  on Instagram or Twitter or you can send me an email here.  Thank you for following along life with me. I love being apart of your day. And as always, I hope this show helps you survive a little easier.

Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice. . .including sassiness? Now I'm not a girl mom. But I am a girl. That's gotta count for something. I know how complicated my emotions can be. With all the social media and cultural pressures, I can only imagine how overwhelming it is to raise a girl nowadays. Good news!!! Today's help comes from girl expert and licensed counselor, Sissy Goff. She spends most of her days chatting with girls and their families. The author of eight books including, “Raising Girls”, Sissy brings loads of wisdom and perspective. In this episode we spend the first chunk of time talking on the topic of beauty. Then we move into whining and strong emotions (including the epidemic of childhood anxiety). Sissy shares great thoughts on girl friendships and sister stress. Personally, I love her thoughts on how attention issues (e.g., ADHD) can impact girls socially. Lastly, she gives excellent advice on how to maintain a healthy mother-daughter relationship. And this quote: What we chat about:  Speaking to the different areas of beauty God has placed in each girl, specifically calling out strength and bravery. How we, as moms, talk about OURSELVES influences how our daughters see themselves. Helping girls develop their own identity. Keeping an ongoing dialogue and pulling your daughter back “into the huddle of your family” to discuss external messages. Building up confidence helps lessen the fixation on external beauty. Circling back to the places your daughter is confident and the things she likes about herself. The importance of a girl's father (or other male role model in her life) to show her she is valued for who she is. Helping your daughter realize most girls share her same struggles. Managing her intense emotions at home and recognizing anxiety. Teaching empathy in practical ways. Identifying “balcony friends,” “basement friends,” and “rollercoaster friends.” Respecting her capabilities and fighting the urge to “fix everything” as she moves into the teen years.
