Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless TD, has announced €847,820 in funding to support 36 projects taking place nationwide as part of Science Week 2025. Marking its 30th anniversary this year, Science Week is coordinated by Research Ireland and celebrates science in our everyday lives. Running from 9th-16th November, with 14 festivals and hundreds of events taking place nationwide, the theme for this year's campaign is 'Then. Today. Tomorrow'. For Science Week 2025, Research Ireland is encouraging people to explore how science and research have shaped and improved the lives we live today, while also looking at the questions and challenges of tomorrow, and how insights from the past can influence our future decisions. Speaking at the launch, Minister Lawless said: "Science Week is now a key event across Ireland, connecting people with science through engaging activities. I am delighted to announce my department's support for this year's programme with over €847,000 in funding for 36 projects. Science shapes every minute of our daily lives, from protecting the environment to driving healthcare and technological innovation, and so much more besides. This year's theme, 'Then. Today. Tomorrow.', invites us to reflect on past progress and future possibilities, and, above all, enjoy the experiences. I encourage everyone to get involved and attend one of the many events happening around the country this Science Week." Welcoming the launch of Science Week 2025, Director of Research for Society at Research Ireland, Dr Ruth Freeman, said: "For 30 years, Science Week has been sparking curiosity and bringing people together through science. Our anniversary theme of 'Then. Today. Tomorrow.' is a chance to both celebrate the endeavours of yesteryear that have brought us to where we are today, and to consider what may lie ahead for individuals, families, communities, Ireland, and the entire planet. We're delighted to see such a wide range of events taking place across the country again this year. The success and appeal of Science Week is due primarily to the creativity and tireless work of local organisers and volunteers. I want to sincerely thank them for making Science Week such a vibrant, nationwide celebration." Science Week 2025 Festival highlights include: DUBLIN: Luke Jerram's spectacular Museum of the Moon - a seven-metre diameter sphere featuring detailed imagery of the lunar surface - is coming to Dublin's Merrion Square from 13th-15th November. A specially-curated programme of performances will accompany the installation, offering audiences an exciting and thought-provoking experience in celebration of 30 years of Science Week. The event is free to attend and will open to the public on Thursday, 13th November. (booking information will be accessible on scienceweek.ie closer to the time); CORK: Renowned spectacle theatre company, Macnas, makes its Cork premiere at Marina Market, Cork, for Science Week 2025.?On Sunday, 9th November, Macnas will bring its vibrant troupe of drummers, stilt walkers, and puppets to Cork city to tell a powerful story about biodiversity loss and the gradual disappearance of the corncrake across Ireland. Known for its distinctive and recognisable call, the corncrake's decline serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need to protect habitats and biodiversity. An installation inspired by the performance will remain at Marina Market, alongside the Science Week-funded?SpaceFest, until Thursday, 13th November. Full list of Festivals and Events awarded funding: Sligo Science Festival (€50,000) - The Sligo Science Festival is a 10-day event that takes place during Science Week. Lá India in Áras Farmleigh ar ceal ar chúinsí sábháilteachta. The Indian Council of Ireland has announced that there will be no major festival celebrating India's National Day in Farmleigh House in Phoenix Park next Saturday as planned due to safety concerns in light of recent attacks on people of Indian origin. Tá Comhairle India na hÉireann tar éis fógairt nach mbeidh féile mhór ag ceiliúradh Lá Náisiúnta India in Áras Farmleigh i bPáirc an Fhionnuisce Dé Sathairn seo chugainn mar a bhí beartaithe ar chúinsí sábháilteachta i bhfianaise ionsaithe atá déanta le gairid ar dhaoine de bhunú India. Speaking in front of Government Houses after a meeting with the Tánaiste, Council chairman Prashant Shuki said "it is not currently appropriate to celebrate the national holiday, and we will review in the future to arrive at a new date for India Day." Ag labhairt dó os comhair Thithe an Rialtais tar éis chruinniú a bheith aige leis an Tánaiste dúirt cathaoirleach na Comhairle Prashant Shuki "nach bhfuil sé fabhrach faoi láthair an fhéile náisiúnta a cheiliúradh, agus beidh athbhreithniú againn amach anseo le theacht ar dháta nua do Lá India." Mr Shuki said they had consulted extensively, with the Gardaí and others, and said it was a difficult decision. Dúirt an tUasal Shuki go raibh caidreamh déanta go forleathan acu, leis na Gardaí agus le dreamanna eile, agus dúirt sé gur cinneadh deacair a bhí ann. He said they had been advised that there was no cause for concern about the events planned in Phoenix Park but "we were concerned about the celebration of the festival in other parts of the country." Dúirt sé go raibh comhairle faighte acu nach raibh aon údar imní faoi na himeachtaí a bhí beartaithe i bPáirc an Fhionnuisce ach "bhí imní orainn faoi cheiliúradh na féile i n-áiteacha eile sa tír." The Council has organized India Day every year since 2015, without any problems they said until this year. Tá Lá India eagraithe gach bliain ag an gComhairle ó 2015, gan aon fhadhb a dúirt siad go dtí i mbliana. Another group, the Federation of Indian Communities in Ireland, which also met with Minister Simon Harris, says it will continue as planned with Saturday's festival on Merrion Square in the centre of the capital. Deir grúpa eile, Cónaidhm na bPobal Indiacha i nÉirinn, a raibh cruinniú freisin acu leis an Aire Simon Harris go mbeidh siad féin ag leanacht mar a bhí beartaithe le féile Dé Sathairn ar Chearnóg Mhuirfean i lár na príomhcathrach. Last week, Colm Brophy, the Minister of State with Responsibility for Immigration, called for greater and stronger action from the Gardaí, and the newly appointed Garda Commissioner, following a series of attacks on people of Indian origin. An tseachtain seo caite a d'iarr Colm Brophy, an tAire Stáit ar a bhfuil Freagracht faoin Imirce, gníomh níos mó agus níos láidre óna Gardaí, agus ón gCoimisinéir nua- cheaptha ar na Gardaí, tar éis sraith ionsaithe a bhí déanta ar dhaoine de bhunú India. This was after the Indian Embassy in Dublin issued a warning to Indian citizens living and working in Ireland. Ba shin tar éis d'Ambasáid India i mBaile Átha Cliath foláireamh a chur amach ag saoránaigh de chuid India atá ina gcónaí agus ag obair i nÉirinn. Ghlac breis is 100 duine as an tír sin ó dhúchas páirt in agóid chiúin ag an Roinn Dlí agus Cirt an mhí seo caite. The Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, Dermot Farrell, said he was deeply saddened by the attacks and said he understood that people from India were scared and fearful of the unprovoked attacks. The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) is hosting its annual science festival with a Celtic Halloween twist - Samhain agus Science. The festival brings together researchers from DIAS and around the world to make the scientific questions of our time and that of Celtic history relevant, accessible, and fun. During the festival, researchers will explore everything from black holes to spooky space weather, how space spooks your skeleton, the whispering fin whales who sing off our coasts and Christian curses in medieval Ireland. Beginning Wednesday, 30 October, 'Samhain agus Science' will run until 12 November. All events are free, geared for a general audience, and will take place at 7 pm in DIAS HQ, 10 Burlington Road with one event (12 Nov) in DIAS Geophysics 5 Merrion Square. To register your attendance and book your place, visit https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/samhain-agus-science-2024-3749889. Speaking about the annual event, Dr Eucharia Meehan, CEO and Registrar of DIAS, said: "This is such a unique festival bringing together our three schools of research - Celtic Studies, Theoretical Physics and Cosmic physics - capturing both the eerie strangeness of the universe and that of our own medieval past". Samhain Agus Science 2024 Programme of Events: 30 Oct: Primordial mountains and dancing giants: black holes in cosmic history. Dr Syksy Räsänen, Senior Researcher, Theoretical Physics, University of Helsinki, will discuss the regions of space that are possible to enter but which you can never leave. Expect to learn about time travel, dark matter and the formation of galaxies. 4 Nov: Spooky Space Weather and the Halloween Storm Dr Alexandra Ruth Fogg, Space Scientist at Dunsink Observatory (DIAS) will discuss the "winds", "storms" and "rains" on earth which are caused by Space Weather. She will explore the famous Halloween space weather storm of 2003 and its impacts on human technology, the Northern and Southern lights, and images of the aurora as seen from Ireland. 5 Nov: Christian Curses in Medieval Ireland Dr Jesse Patrick Harrington, research fellow at the School of Celtic Studies (DIAS) will delve into the rich traditions of Christian curses and their associated beliefs in medieval Europe and Ireland. Exploring why many of Ireland's most prominent saints, including St. Patrick, St. Adomnán of Iona, and Dublin's patron St. Lorcán Ó Tuathail, were celebrated or feared as champion cursers. 7 Nov: How Space Spooks Your Skeleton Dr Lisa McNamee, a medical doctor with a special interest in aviation and space medicine, will share the impacts of the "alien" space environment on the human skeleton, how the body adapts and the learnings which can help us live more healthily on earth. Lisa is a nominee for the Women in STEM Rising Star Award 2024. 12 Nov: Fin Whale Whispers Beneath Your Feet Dr Martin Möllhoff, Director of Seismic Networks (DIAS Geophysics), will be discussing Fin whales - the second largest animal on earth - who produce one of the loudest vocalisations. Martin will reveal how, in some coastal regions, whale song vibrations can be recorded with low-cost citizen science seismometers, helping encourage engagement with our marine environment and giving vital information on migration patterns and climate change. He was twenty-two, and she, Nora Barnacle, was twenty and employed as a chambermaid in Finn's Hotel. They agreed to meet on June 14th, outside No. 1 Merrion Square, the home of Sir William Wilde, but Nora did not turn up. After a dejected letter from Joyce they met on June 16th, a date which came to be immortalized in literature as Bloomsday. Edna O'Brien paints a miniature portrait of an artist, idealist, insurgent and filled with a secret loneliness. In Nora, he was to find accomplice, collaborator and muse. For all their sexual escalations, Joyce considered their relationship 'a kind of sacrament'. Their life was one of wandering, emotional upheaval and poverty. It was also one that was binding and mysterious, and defied all the mores of intimacy. In prose brimming with life and energy, Edna O'Brien resurrects a relationship of magnificent intensity on the page, and in doing so shows herself to be touched by the genius of the writer she loves above all others.

Sir Robert Woods and his wife, Lady Margaret, lived with their family at No. 39 Merrion Square. Sir Robert Woods was an Ear Nose and Throat specialist and a surgeon at Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital. His medical clinic was located at No. 40 Merrion Square. As casualties mounted during Easter Week, this building was hurriedly converted into a field hospital. Robert Woods, grandson of Dr. Robert Woods, reads from a long and detailed letter written by his aunt, Molly Woods, about her day by day experiences during the Rising. She is writing to her brother Thornley who is fighting with the British Forces in Flanders and who is later to lose his life in the Great War. Into the letter she has drawn some detailed diagrams of the positions of the Irish rebels and of the British forces in the area close to her home. Dorothy Dunlop, who now lives in Belfast and is the daughter of Molly Woods and Professor Gilbert Waterhouse of Trinity College Dublin, describes the memories and the extraordinary stories handed down to her through her family. Fascinating details are provided about the running of the temporary field hospital at No. 40 Merrion Square and about the defence of Trinity College by her father and others during the Rising. At that time he was a lieutenant in the Dublin University Officer Training Corps. After the fighting, he was presented with a sword by the grateful business people of Grafton Street for his efforts in preventing the destruction of the street, and saving it from the dire fate of nearby Sackville Street. The sword remains with the family today.
