As Floridians know, the Florida coastline was not always characterized by glitzy high-rises and massive condos that clutter the beach front. Not that many decades ago, it was easy to see the ocean driving down A-1A. The oceanside was a respite that shaped communities, lives, and livelihoods. This was South Miami. The South Beach Shark Club film directed and produced by Robert Ramos and Pedro Gomez is a compelling documentary about real-life shark fishermen who mentored boys and teens who were seeking something bigger than themselves. It tells the story of a club that evolved into an extended family that gave kids a reason to thrive on the shores of Miami and stay out of gangs. It is a step back to a bygone era of South Miami before commercialization. The documentary premiered at The Miami International Film Festival to sold-out audiences and won a MIFF Documentary Achievement award. It captures the South Miami community in the 1960s and 70s and the role the ocean and beach played in shaping a community. It is a story of the rugged, rogue fishermen who mentored the boys as surrogate fathers and taught them how to reel in the biggest catch ever. It is the best fish story ever told. What is the best thing that could ever happen to your unpublished novel? Your friend Rebecca Miller asks if she could adapt it for the big screen. Rebecca Miller (yes, daughter of Arthur) helms her 5th feature as both writer & director in Maggie's Plan - a quirky, academic romance set in NYC with ficto-critical anthropologists, a pickle entrepreneur, and some sensible (and not so sensible) shoes. Loosely based on a story by Karen Rinaldi (which, in turn, was grounded in her real life).   Starring Greta Gerwig (Mistress America), Ethan Hawke, and Oscar-winner Julianne Moore (Still Alice). Co-starring Bill Hader (Trainwreck), Maya Rudolph, Travis Fimmel, and Wallace Shawn (The Good Wife). O'Toole didn't want to leave destiny to, well, destiny, so she saw it twice - the first time at the Miami International Film Festival (with Rebecca Miller in attendance). And, no longer talking about the film's love triangles here, Hollister also discusses her newest guilty pleasure: Fixer Upper.

Ron Chapman  Ron and I talk about his beautiful new film The Poet of Havana, the magic of music, the generosity of poets like Carlos Varela and why piracy at one time was seen as a blessing in Cuba.  Film Synopsis Enter the world of internationally renown Cuban musician Carlos Varela…singer, song-writer, lyricist, one of the most influential and well-loved artists of his time as he celebrates his 30th anniversary in poignant performances.  Discover his cultural, political and social significance. How he was influenced by his country, politics and people, and how he has influenced them in return. His struggle for individual freedoms, and his efforts to build bridges between Cuba, the United States, disenfranchised Cubans, and the people of the world.  Shot in Havana, with unique access, exclusive interviews, stunning concert and insider back-stage moments. Varela is joined by international stars, his friends, Jackson Browne, Benicio del Toro, Ivan Lins, Luis Enrique, Juan and Samuel Formel, Diana Fuentes, X Alfonso, Alexander Abreu and more. Film Trailer Biography Producer, director and entrepreneur, Ron Chapman began his career as a musician, and went on to manage musical artists and produce albums.  His legendary Toronto music club “The Edge” provided a scene for some of the most exciting international artists of the day, and he promoted concerts in the city’s premier venues.   He established a film production company, produced and directed rock videos, and for decades has produced and directed television commercials for some of the world’s leading brands. Chapman founded the successful Canadian advertising agency Brandworks International. Chapman's successful feature documentary “Who the F**K is Arthur Fogel”, released 2014 and distributed by eOne, features Lady Gaga, U2, The Police, Madonna, Rush, and key music industry insiders, and has been released in over 38 countries worldwide: including HBO in Canada and South America,  EPIX and Netflix USA. His award-winning documentary film “The Poet of Havana”, released on the festival circuit in 2015 and picked up by HBO USA, documents the life and career of Carlos Varela, one of Cuba’s most influential, beloved artists.
