October is already a spooky month with Halloween, but it is also Cybersecurity Awareness Month. If you own or manage a business, you're likely no stranger to the risks of cyber-attacks. Businesses of all shapes and sizes are making headlines due to falling victim of an attack. However, for many, news of cyber-attacks has become white noise. Mike Maddox of Application Specialist Kompany (ASK) is here today to talk with cybersecurity expert, Josh Gembala. As ASK's Enhanced Security Services (ESS) Manager, Josh has just about seen it all. In this episode of the Bottom Line IT Show, Mike and Josh get into the nitty gritty of what today's cyber threat landscape looks like, how it's changed over the last 12 months, and what business owners need to know – especially if working with Managed Service Providers (MSPs). In segment 2, Mike and Josh talk about the devastating impact a cyberattack has on a business. Many business owners think of the financial costs. Many stats on the web talk about the cost per record. While this is most definitely a contributing cost, business owners also need to consider the legal and attorney costs. Additional costs that quickly add up: Legal and attorney fees Loss of production due to downtime Overtime-pay for IT staff, executives, etc. Public relations fees Damage to reputation, trust with customers In segment 3, Mike and Josh hit on an interesting topic about managed IT service providers and cybersecurity. They go into detail on how the wave of cyberattacks in recent years has morphed managed IT service providers into marketing their services around cybersecurity. Mike and Josh caution business owners not to be tricked by the buzz words and marketing tactics. What they encourage business owners to do though is to thoroughly vet and question their MSPs' cybersecurity business model, their level of expertise and training, and how their security services are offered. Check out the full episode to get ALL the details.

In this episode of the Bottom Line IT Podcast, Mike Maddox breaks down the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) requirements and what it means for Defense contractors. Joining Mike are security experts Josh Gembala and John Stephens. Organizations that contract or subcontract with the Department of Defense (DoD) will be held accountable to meeting CMMC requirements – if they want to continue doing business with the DoD that is. Organizations are required to meet these standards by 2026, which might seem like a long time from now but the road to achieving CMMC is a long one. Luckily, ASK has some answers and guidance in how to get started. Tune in as Mike, Josh and John dive into the nitty-gritty details of who CMMC impacts and what organizations need to get started. In April 2021, ASK announced their merger with Convergence Networks / Grade A. This isn’t like other merger announcements though. Senior leaders within ASK knew the individuals of Convergence Networks / Grade A for over 10 years in a peer group. They had a deep relationship with one another, similar business structures, similar entrepreneurial spirits and most importantly, similar values. To shed some insight into who Convergence Networks / Grade A is and why this merger made sense for ASK, Mike Maddox sat down with two of the senior leaders: Mat Lafrance and Eric Gray. As you listen to their discussion, you will notice a few commonalities Mike, Mat and Eric share. All three companies are led by technology enthusiasts that have a deep passion and appreciation for their staff, clients, and customer service. Which is the entire goal and vision for the company – to become North America’s first people-centric managed service provider. You’ve probably heard in the news the many stories of fortune 500 companies, healthcare facilities, and retailers that have been hit hard by cyberattacks. You may have even thought “too bad for them” and went about your day thinking that your business couldn’t possibly be a target. The truth is, cybercrime hits businesses of all shapes, sizes, and industries, and when better to talk about real-life horror stories, than during Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Mike Maddox sits down with three ASK clients (Orbitform, Sinto America, and Fibre Converters) who have all had different cyberattack experience. He talks with them about the impact it had on their business and why they see the value in having a cybersecurity solution in place. Imagine finding out that someone got into your email, mirrored your email signature, and emailed everyone in your contact list…without you knowing. It’s a feeling of violation of privacy for some, but for many, it’s a deep concern of how this hack impacts the business and its reputation. It can happen in a split second and it only takes one time. Ryan Stark of Orbitform explains to Mike their rationale for having cybersecurity protection, “It’s never happened to me…Well, I’ve never gotten in a car crash but I still wear a seat belt and I still have airbags because it only takes once.” Take a listen to Mike’s conversations on these real-life cyber horror stories.
