I’m Doug Apple...and my heart is on fire. (Luke 24:32) “She put the Bible there on my nightstand…right next to my ashtray.” Bibles and ashtrays. I knew this story was going to be good! I was talking with Mike Sharman and I asked him the simple question, “How did you come to faith in Christ?” It didn’t come until he was deep into life, married, making money and advancing professionally. His wife had become a Christian, and he had attended a Bible study with her, but spent most of the time finding things to argue about, so he quit going. But his wife had taken that one simple step, putting a Bible on his nightstand, and there it sat, like an ancient treasure chest just waiting to be opened. Then came the night he was lying in bed, his wife fast asleep, and he heard a voice, a resonating voice. It simply said, “I exist.” He wasn’t sure what he’d heard, or even if he was dreaming, but he heard it a second time, then a third time, and he quickly came to the decision that it was God. Well. Now what? Mike was open at this point, and ready for what might come next. What came next was the voice saying, “Pick up that book,” and he knew what “book” was being referred to: the Bible on his nightstand. The voice said, “Pick up that book. Begin at page one. Read as though you believe.” Well Mike had picked up “that book” before, but here was the key, the instruction to “read as though you believe.” In other words, God was saying, “Set aside your bias. Put away any anti-Bible or anti-Christian bigotry you may have and simply read the Bible ‘as though you believe,’ and see what happens.” And he did. And the rest is history. And Mike Sharman has been following Jesus and making a difference in the world and in the Kingdom of God for many years now. So what about you? Perhaps this is God’s word to you today. Pick up that book. Begin at page one. Read as though you believe. May God bless you today. I’m Doug Apple.

In this episode, Courtenay invites Share Healthcare's chief of legal counsel, Mike Sharman, back to the show to discuss the benefits of Share Healthcare's model, especially during inflation. There's no surprise that things are becoming increasingly more expensive and unfortunately, when it comes to cutting costs, most people are turning to their healthcare burdens first. Mike discusses the ways that Share Healthcare promotes medical freedom, the Christian virtue of sharing burden (which makes medical care more affordable), and ultimately the achievement of happy and healthy lives! Mike received his JD from the University of Wyoming and his LLM in International Taxation from Regent University School of Law. Since the early 1990s, Mike has represented and advocated for Health Care Sharing Ministries. Mike has represented Health Care Sharing Ministries in administrative agencies, courts, and legislatures in over twenty states. Mike Sharman considers himself to be a creative and an entrepreneur. He used both of these traits to build a successful $1m social media agency called Retroviral, which is responsible for making more brands go viral than any other agency in Africa. After successfully launching and then scaling Retroviral, Mike sold a majority stake in the business to a large corporate. That's when the gaps in his financial knowledge started to affect his role as CEO, the stability of the acquisition and put the day to day running of the business into a precarious position. In this episode, Mike and I talk about his financial shortcomings, how he muddled through the acquisition and the impressive turnaround that followed.Buy Mike's new book - http://brandalismbook.com/Work with Retroviral - https://retroviral.co.za/Follow Mike on Twitter - @mikesharman

The COVID-19 pandemic has altered sports sponsorship For much of the pandemic, the world's leading athletes were sidelined, working for reduced pay, playing to empty seats or isolated in competitive bubbles designed to thwart a pandemic that has sapped billions in revenue from professional sports. Still, for the best of the best, things couldn't be better—at least in terms of their financial heft. The ten highest-paid athletes in the world took home pretax gross earnings of $1.05 billion during 2020, 28% more than 2019's top earners. The combined haul falls just a few million short of the $1.06 billion record set in 2018. And athletes like Connor McGregor, last year's top earner, are putting their wealth to work in whiskey ventures, or tennis stars launching their own footwear But the question is for brands who pile money into sports, what does the value proposition look like sponsoring events in empty stadia? To discuss this Michael Avery is joined by Jean Willers, Managing Director of Nielsen Sports South Africa; Justin Sampson, MD of Octagon in SA and Mike Sharman, co-founder of MatchKit, a DIY website builder aimed at athletes

TechCentral — Mike Sharman, founder of digital marketing agency Retroviral, joins TechCentral editor Duncan McLeod for a chat about MatchKit.io, a new website builder aimed at sports professionals. Founded by Sharman, Springbok rugby player Bryan Habana, and sports content creator and broadcaster Ben Karpinski, Retroactive - which owns MatchKit.co - intends to help professional sportsmen and sportswomen worldwide develop a digital presence for themselves. In the podcast, Sharman explains that while most sports people have a presence on social media, they often don't have their own website. The idea behind the website is to make it easier for sports professionals to develop an online presence, raise money for their chosen charities and make money from selling merchandise. In the podcast, Sharman explains how the business model works, how he and Habana came up with the idea for the platform, and where they see it going next. Sharman also looks back at 10 years of Retroviral and some of the big campaigns the agency has worked on in that time, including with Nando's and RocoMamas. Don't miss the discussion!
BizNews — Athletes would have descended on Tokyo in July and August this year, hoping that four years of sweat and blood would bring them the glory of an Olympic medal. But their dreams have been dashed by the Covid-19 pandemic. It has affected every single sports star with a resultant loss in income. New Zealand's rugby players will be the world's first sports people to play in front of crowds as it had eliminated Covid-19 from its shores, but Covid-19 is likely to hang around in most other countries for the foreseeable future. Organisers of other major sports events have tried to put together events without crowds, but have had difficulties luring big names to participate. The US Tennis Open Championship suggested that every player should arrive with just one team mate for this year’s championship in September, but last year’s winner Rafa Nadal indicated that he would not be interested if that is how the event would be run. So, what do athletes do in the interim to earn money and stay relevant? World Cup winning Springbok legend and try scoring machine Bryan Habana has teamed up with a former school mate, Mike Sharman to launch Matchkit.co – a platform that gives athletes a solution to grow their commercial brands. Marketers have long known that we listen more carefully to the advice of those we trust than messages from corporates trying to sell us their wares. So, for decades they’ve drawn on endorsements by celebrities, primarily movie stars and athletes, to generate additional sales for their clients. The digital age has ushered in a fresh army of influencers, authentically independent individuals including previously unknown youtube video heroes or twitter superstars (think Joe Sugg of Strictly Come Dancing). As their influence mushrooms, so has their ability to turn their newfound fame into full time careers. Some South Africans were among the world’s first to spot what has now become a global trend. Five years ago, Webfluential was launched in Johannesburg – a business which now represents 35 000 global influencers with a reach into well over a billion people - including eight from SA who have become millionaires through their influencer marketing efforts. To find out how it all happened, I caught up with Webfluential's Mike Sharman - who co founded the business with Murray Legg and David Philip.

Storytelling. It’s one of the biggest buzzwords in business—storytelling—and it’s how savvy companies are satisfying the public’s never-ending hunger for content. With compelling characters, relatable plots and, most important, authenticity, innovative story tellers are connecting with consumers, colleagues and investors on an emotional level – something which will always distinguish your business from that of a competitors. I chat to Mike Sharman about how entrepreneurs can craft a great story for the businesses and its products and services.
