The first customer today reports that the previous night, his right nipple had moved away from its usual location. He noticed its absence when he looked in the mirror and found it in his armpit. ‘Wow,' I say with a slight frown. I have never heard of a migrating nipple before. ‘Let's have a look.' I slide the door shut and motion to him to pull his T-shirt off. ‘Oh, it has moved back now,' he says. Dr Anne Biccard is a medical doctor who lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa. In this episode, I chat with Dan about his book and his journey so far. Dan Moyane was ten years old when he lay on his back on a patch of grass at his parents' home in White City Jabavu, Soweto, looking at the moon and thinking, ‘I don't want to die unknown.' The year was 1969, and Neil Armstrong and his team had recently achieved immortality by completing the first moon landing. It was the knowledge that the astronauts would be remembered as long as the world turned that made Dan realise that he, too, would like to be remembered by people outside of his immediate community, just as he would like to find out more about what lay beyond his horizon. Dan's insatiable curiosity and love of learning have ensured that his name has, indeed, become known throughout South Africa. This is the story of how he achieved his goal – from his days as a student at the apex of South Africa's political turmoil to his years in exile in Mozambique and his first job in media, and the trajectory of a career that would see him become one of South Africa's most highly regarded and influential broadcasters. It is a career that led Dan to interview prominent leaders in Mozambique and South Africa and become acquainted with the likes of Nelson Mandela and Graça Machel and saw him cover the country's birth into democracy and help shape South Africans' understanding of the changing world around them. I Don't Want to Die Unknown delves into these experiences, giving a glimpse into the inquisitiveness and desire to know more, do more and be more that has driven Dan Moyane. It offers a rare insight into the man behind the microphone – his ambitions, trials, and motivations. Part memoir, part legacy, this book bears testimony to the fact that far from dying unknown, Dan is one of South Africa's most important, high-profile media players, and his story provides the framework for his next significant question: How best to use his public profile to benefit his countrymen.

In this episode, I chat with Alex about how he built Capital Legacy. We also talk about why Wills are so important. Testament to their mandate of making it easier to get your Will in place is the 380,000 clients they have assisted over the last 10 years. This number grows monthly with, on average, 11,000 new clients placing their trust in Capital Legacy to ensure their Legacies are protected too. Passing away without a Will is problematic in quite a number of ways. Shortly put, though, it means that the deceased dies intestate and his/hers last wishes will most probably not be adhered to. Capital Legacy draws up Wills at no cost to their clients, puts plans in place to cover legal fees and takes care of deceased estates. Because of the company's focus on wills and its specialised processes, it finalises estates on average much quicker than industry standards. Word of mouth regarding Capital Legacy has been a big part of the thousands of enquiries the company gets every month and is a testament to their focus on good old-fashioned client service. In this episode, Mills and I have a frank and open chat about South Africa and where we are heading or where we could be heading. At the core of the dismal state of the current world order is the failure of global governance … the seismic global economic power shift – from industrialised to emerging economies … is taking place within the context of a glaring leadership vacuum.' – Mills Soko. Over the past 20 years, the global political economy has experienced its most profound shifts since the industrial revolution. In South Africa and the World, Mills Soko reflects on some of the salient issues that have pervaded public discourse during this time, analysing them within the context of the contemporary South African political economy and the country's position in the world. Arranged thematically, the essays were all written during a defining period in recent history, a period that has witnessed, among others, the accession of China to the WTO, the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the US, the invention of the iPad, the birth of Facebook, the 2008/9 global financial crisis, Brexit and the global coronavirus pandemic which began at the end of 2019. The turbulent multipolar world demands visionary political and economic leadership, supported by institutions well attuned to contemporary conditions. Such leadership is in short supply. Nor is the existing institutional architecture sufficiently equipped to deal with a complex array of economic, social, environmental, technological and demographic challenges. Mills Soko highlights what has not worked in politics, leadership, foreign policy, the economy, the African development trajectory, corporate ethics, international trade, global governance, and the thread which underlies all these issues – the importance of strong, decisive and accountable leadership. He counters his criticism with what has worked and offers views on how some of the problems that have constrained progress in South Africa and the world can be solved. A central message emerges from his writings: leadership and governance matter, whether in the national or international context. It is a message that permeates all the chapters in the book. And it goes to the heart of what South Africa has gone through over the past two decades and where it is today. Click here for the EBook.
