In the 23rd century Johnny Rico enlists in the Mobile Infantry, the heart of the human military. As he nears completion of an intensely rigorous training program to learn how to fight and use his power armor, war breaks out between humanity and the bugs. The bugs are aliens with a hive mind, who attack and destroy Buenos Aires, and Johnny and his friends must strive to survive and defend humanity through the brutal war. It's also full of deeply interesting (and controversial) ideas about duty, service, crime and punishment, and so much more. If you like military sci-fi this is a must-read, and if you are into philosophical SF you are going to be pleasantly surprised how much it will stick with you and make you think.Join the Hugonauts book club on discord!Or you can watch the episode on YouTube if you prefer videoSimilar books we recommend:The Forever War by Joe Haldeman (listen to our interview with Joe)Columbus Day by Craig AlansonThe Parafaith War by L. Starship Troopers is iconic Robert Heinlein. One of his best sellers, and arguably his most recognized novel, Starship Troopers explores life under the Terran Federation through the eyes of Johnny Rico as, after high school, he joins the military. In true Heinlein fashion, he does this to impress a girl. After failing to meet the standards for anything more elevated, Rico finds himself in the Mobile Infantry, combat soldiers who wear powered armor and specialize in lightning strikes.

Ian and Cole lock pincers for a very special look at Starship Troopers! In the distant future, mankind has expanded its reach into deep space, united by an omnipresent military culture. When a far-flung species of giant bug-like aliens threatens to destroy Earth, a young Mobile Infantry recruit finds himself thrust into a world of gut-wrenching combat, moral challenges, and the chilling prospect that a new lifeform is viciously ascending the food chain.Paul Verhoeven's 1997 big-budget flop was billed as a biting military satire set against a sci-fi action backdrop. But in adapting Robert Heinlein's serious-minded, award-winning 1959 novel, the Robocop director appears to have (literally) lost the plot.In this spoilerific examination, the guys approach this dilemma from very different angles: one loved the book and disliked much of the movie; the other hated Heinlein's novel and found the film to be goofy but enjoyable. From teen drama love triangles, to a debate on propaganda, to the mystery of the missing mech suits, this installment of "Page2Screen" establishes a wide perimeter for its scorched-earth bug hunt!Show Links:Watch the Starship Troopers trailer.Keep up with all of Cole's literary criticism at:The Quill to LiveTorPlus: In case you missed it, check out Cole's recent appearance on NBC's revival of the classic game show, Password! It's been twenty five years since our pop culture classic was made!! We're going all the way back to 1997 in order to revisit a cult classic! I'm not sure that this was ever a huge deal when it was originally released, but since that time it has developed a good amount of following, not because of how "good" the movie is, but because it just seems to be a fun watch!"In the distant future, the Earth is at war with a race of giant alien insects. Little is known about the Bugs except that they are intent on the eradication of all human life. But there was a time before the war... A Mobile Infantry travels to distant alien planets to take the war to the Bugs. They are a ruthless enemy with only one mission: Survival of their species no matter what the cost..."This movie has a very simple plot. It's a futuristic society in which humans are trying to find the home planet of a species of alien bugs, in order to destroy them all. There are some ups and some downs, and Rico goes through a lot of stuff in order to gain the trust of his fellow soldiers, even going through a ton of heart ache. Through it all though, there is plenty of bug guts! If anything else, this is just a fun watch. I'm doing my part! Young people all over the globe are joining up to save the future. We must meet this threat with our courage, our valour, indeed with our very lives to ensure that human civilization, not insect, dominates this galaxy now and always! All right, let's sum up. This year we explored the failure of democracy. How our social scientists brought our world to the brink of chaos. We talked about the veterans, how they took control and established the stability that has lasted for generations since. You know these facts, but have I taught you anything of value this year? The only good bug is a dead bug. Every day, Federal scientists are looking for new ways to kill bugs. Shoot a nuke down a bug hole, you got a lot of dead bugs. This is for all you new people. I have only one rule. Everybody fights, no one quits. If you don't do your job, I'll kill you myself. Welcome to the Roughnecks! I expect the best and I give the best. Here's the beer. Here's the entertainment. Now have fun. That's an order. They're doing their part. Are you? Join the Mobile Infantry and save the world. Service guarantees citizenship. Starship Troopers (1997) is an unlikely blockbuster - divisive by design. Director Paul Verhoeven has called it the most expensive art film ever made - a movie that ostensibly looks on the surface like any other big summer action film, but one that intentionally baits and switches over and over again. It's a movie meant to make you sick to your stomach - to set off all kinds of alarm bells. And yet, many fans have championed its fascist ethos at face value.Yikes! Will the real proto-fascists please stand up?Starship Troopers follows a young soldier named Johnny Rico and his exploits in the Mobile Infantry, a futuristic military unit. This week on Total Movie Recall, Steve and Ryan watch the most subtle satire ever made — Starship Troopers. What exactly is this movie skewering? We're not sure. We thought we might have figured it out with the Nazi uniforms and Leni Riefenstahl shots and Aryan actors, but then we got distracted by the nudity and gore and decided not to think about it anymore. Starship Troopers is a 1997 American satirical military science fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Edward Neumeier. It follows a young soldier named Johnny Rico and his exploits in the Mobile Infantry, a futuristic military unit. It is better than Battleship. USS Callister is the first episode of the fourth series of anthology series Black Mirror. It follows Robert Daly, a reclusive but gifted programmer and co-founder of a popular MMO who is bitter over the lack of recognition of his position from his coworkers. He takes out his frustrations by simulating a Star Trek–like space adventure within the game, using his co-workers' DNA to create sentient digital clones of them. This week we’re hunting down some big ol’ bugs with Doogie Howser and the chick from Wild Things, all while discussing the 1997 action cult-classic ‘Starship Troopers’. Starship Troopers is a 1997 American satirical military science fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Edward Neumeier. It originally came from an unrelated script called Bug Hunt at Outpost Nine, but eventually licensed the name Starship Troopers from Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 science fiction novel. The story follows a young soldier named Johnny Rico and his exploits in the Mobile Infantry, a futuristic military unit. Rico's military career progresses from recruit to non-commissioned officer and finally to officer against the backdrop of an interstellar war between mankind and an insectoid species known as "Arachnids". This episode was recorded on the afternoon of Friday, 19th October from Showroom 5 of the Showroom Cinema in Sheffield. We are using Shure microphones as opposed to our usual condenser mics so apologies for any weird sound anomalies, plosives or whatever. Episode 26 sees Andy and Mitch LITERALLY joined by André Gower, fellow podcaster, star of Fred Dekker's 1987 cult classic, The Monster Squad and, now, director of the definitive documentary on the film, Wolfman's Got Nards, as they put their heads together over drinks and with an audience at Celluloid Screams! His chosen film? Starship Troopers! Following the success of Basic Instinct and the critical and financial failure of Showgirls, director Paul Verhoeven returned to form with his satiric bug-stomping space saga, Starship Troopers! However, it's fair to say that the reception at the tiime was less than kind. Hammered by critics and barely recouping it's $100 million budget, Starship Troopers is only now finding the love it deserves. But does it? Watch it for yourself! Ultra-violent and actio-packed, the film features an all-star cast including Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, Dina Meyer, Michael Ironside and Jake Busey. The synopsis is as follows: In the distant future, the Earth is at war with a race of giant alien insects. Little is known about the Bugs except that they are intent on the eradication of all human life. But there was a time before the war... A Mobile Infantry travels to distant alien planets to take the war to the Bugs. They are a ruthless enemy with only one mission: Survival of their species no matter what the cost... ALSO, we have a LIVE installment of MITCH'S PITCHES! Due to his well documented ignorance towards films, Mitch is shown a film poster with all titles, taglines etc removed and tasked with attempting to decipher the plot. Will it go well? The poster image can be seen below with the image that Mitch was working from on the left... Once again, just massive thanks to Andre for taking the time to join us, to Rob, Polly and the team at Celluloid Screams for putting us on, to the guys at Arrow Video for sorting us out with goodies to give away and, of course, to the audience who joined us. This week on the show, we're diving back into the twisted world of Paul Verhoeven and his biting social satire/giant bug sci-fi actioner STARSHIP TROOPERS! SYNOPSIS: Set in the future, the story follows a young soldier named Johnny Rico and his exploits in the Mobile Infantry. Rico’s military career progresses from recruit to non-commissioned officer and finally to officer against the backdrop of an interstellar war between mankind and an arachnoid species known as “the Bugs”. Much derided upon release, over the last 20+ years, Verhoeven's film has found new life as a clever send-up of fascism, the American military complex, gender politics and more. We'll delve into all of these themes as well as provide some little-known information about the film's creation! And of course, we also discuss whether or not it belongs in the Psychotronic Hall of Fame, a decision that we leave up to our listeners.
