Parents Navigating the Teen Years
111: Raising An Entrepreneur

Parents Navigating the Teen Years

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 24, 2025 22:57

Nearly two-thirds of today's teens want to become entrepreneurs according to a 2022 survey. But how do parents raise their children so they have the right traits to succeed? Many parents resist letting their children figure out their own path for fear that they won't succeed. However, only doing what their parents think will make them successful will result in young people becoming dispirited and unhappy. The So-What: Parenting expert Margot Machol Bisnow interviewed 70 entrepreneurs and their parents to learn what's needed to incubate an entrepreneur successfully. A recurring theme was letting their children take the lead in their own life and then providing steadfast support. Parents need to lead by following, regardless of where their child wants to go. Children who are allowed to figure out their own passion, and then are encouraged in that passion, live lives filled with joy and purpose. Margot Machol Bisnow spent 20 years in government, including as an FTC Commissioner and staff director of the President's Council of Economic Advisers. For the last 10 years, she has spoken to parent groups about raising creative, confident, resilient children who achieve their dreams. She served as an Advisor to EQ Generation, an after-school program in New York City that gives children the skills to succeed; on the Advisory Board of the MUSE School in Malibu, that prepares young people to live consciously through passion-based learning; and on the Board of Spark the Journey in Washington DC, that mentors low-income high school students to achieve college and career success. Her new book is Raising an Entrepreneur: How to Help Your Children Achieve Their Dreams – 99 Stories from Families Who Did. Learn more at raisinganentrepreneur.com. Why is it important to let children choose their passion and work really hard at it? And why should parents support that passion, regardless of what it is? Why is it important to let children compete if you want a child with grit? What should you teach children about losing if you want a child who isn't afraid to take risks? And why is that important? Why is it important to encourage children to be curious and think of new ways to solve problems? Why does raising kind, compassionate children enable them to find solutions the world needs? And how does that make them more successful? Are grades and test-taking ability key to entrepreneurial success? If not, why not? Here at the Plant-Strong Podcast, as you can tell from all of our guests this season, having “the heart of a hero” means throwing your whole being behind a mission. It means putting health before everything else -- and not just OUR own health, but the health of animals, the planet, and...perhaps most importantly...our children’s health. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a bigger advocate in this work than Suzy Amis Cameron. For over 30 years, she has dedicated herself to caring for the health and sustainability of our planet and Suzy is unapologetically passionate about plant-based foods as a solution to so many of these issues we face today.  She’s the author of THE OMD PLAN: Swap One Meal a Day to Save Your Health and Save the Planet. This book was so powerful that she was even featured as a guest with Oprah on “Super Soul Sunday.” Suzy, along with her sister, also founded the MUSE School in 2005, the first school in the country to be 100% solar powered, zero waste, and with a 100% organic, plant-based lunch program. And, perhaps most importantly, Suzy is also responsible for initiating her husband, film director, James Cameron, into a whole-foods plant-based lifestyle after watching “Forks Over Knives” together a few years ago. If not for this life-changing moment, the documentary, “The Game Changers,” Executive Produced by James and Suzy Amis Cameron, may never have had the global impact it’s having right now. In fact, it is the most-watched documentary of all time with almost 100 million downloads...and counting. So, thank you, Suzy, for your tireless efforts on these and all of your plant-based ventures that you’ll learn about in this episode. In this episode of Veggie Doctor Radio, I talk with Dr. Reese Halter, a forensic naturalist and lover and protector of the earth.   About featured guest: “Dr. Reese is to global warming what Steve Irwin was to wild animals,” a student says of Reese Halter, a prolific author, broadcaster and environmental advocate who vociferously warns of the imperative need to save trees, bees and seas. Halter designed Muse School’s science curriculum and is a former professor at California Lutheran University. He’s a forensic naturalist who broadcasts extensively in Australia, and he mourns its habitat and ecosystem losses. He’s also an ardent supporter of Gen Z’s efforts for climate justice.   “I’m a full-time advocate for Mother Earth, and my forthcoming book, GenZ Emergency, addresses the need for climate justice,” he says. “If we have no trees, we have no life. American cities have lost more than 180 million trees, which cast invaluable shade, afford habitat for our planetary partners, recharge aquifers and provide oxygen.” Just like our planet’s climate, insects are also in trouble, Halter warns. He urges “lawmakers to enact laws mandating stringent environmental measures be implemented and enforced.” Malibu is a leader, but “it needs to pass an ordinance to protect all ancient trees,” he says.  Written by Malibu Magazine   DR. [5:12] Jeff describes how the current education landscape is not able to keep up with what students will actually benefit from, and that’s where the core values of MUSE School come into play. [7:22] Josh agrees that there does seem to be a disconnect between the traditional way of learning and where we are now as a society. [8:41] Rebecca points out that not all kids learn the same which calls for a variety of teaching methods getting implemented in the classroom. [11:27] When Rebecca and her sister opened MUSE, they quickly got a lot of international recognition which led them to start building their model towards a global franchise. [12:56] MUSE Global has decided to focus on early childhood development to start, so they are currently offering early childhood opportunities domestically but hope to expand this in the coming years. [15:14] Rebecca shares that just after a year or two of opening their doors, people were contacting them about potential opportunities to open a MUSE School location themselves. Now that they are finally finished building their intellectual property, they are focusing on their expansion efforts. [16:20] The niche franchisee that would fit the MUSE Global LLC system is someone who both wants to make money but also make change in the education industry. When the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve, the internet will explode with searches for the best diets, which yield all kinds of good, bad, and absurd advice for getting healthy and fit. Vegetarians duke it out with Paleo people, macrobiotics argue with raw foodists, and the cycle goes on and on with no obvious winner. Even with the best intentions, 92 to 98 percent of diets fail in the long term, and by Valentine's Day, most people have abandoned their resolutions for the eating habits they've always had. So what's a person to do? Well, what do you want to do? What will be important to you in the coming year when it comes to your diet? Food is complex and deeply personal. It's a question of culture, tradition, environmental concerns, ethical questions, and socioeconomic status. Over the years, I've become much less interested in what to eat and more obsessed with how to eat. I've seen people eat and live well on all kinds of diets—and no diet at all. On this week's podcast, you'll meet actor, activist, and plant-based advocate Suzy Amis Cameron, who endorses a very moderate ‘one plant-based meal a day' approach. Whether you're a hardcore meat eater or a die-hard veg-head, it's valuable to experiment, reevaluate your assumptions, and find a balanced diet that works for you. Listen & Learn: How Suzy founded MUSE, the only solar-powered, organic, plant-based school Why hope is not a strategy How our current food system is broken (by anyone's standards) How a move away from animal agriculture seems inevitable Why a ‘one meal a day' approach can be an interesting way to experiment with new diets and foods Links & Resources:   MUSE School Suzy's site Link to Suzy's book   ABOUT THE HOST Suzy Amis Cameron is an environmental advocate, the mother of five, and the author of OMD: The Simple, Plant-Based Program to Save Your Health, Save Your Waistline, and Save the Planet. As an explorer, in 2012, Cameron set the world's solo deep diving record of 35,787' in the Challenger Deep in a vehicle of his own design.A dedicated environmentalist, Cameron founded The Avatar Alliance Foundation to take action on climate change, energy policy, deforestation, indigenous rights, ocean conservation, and sustainable agriculture. He is currently in production on Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5.Suzy Amis Cameron (@suzymusing) is a noted environmental advocate, mother of five, and the author of OMD: The Simple, Plant-Based Program to Save Your Health, Save Your Waistline, and Save the Planet and the founder of the OMD Movement, a multi-pronged effort to transform eating habits and the food system. She is also a founder of Plant Power Task Force, focused on showing the impact of animal agriculture on climate change and the environment, founded in 2012 with her husband James Cameron and Craig McCaw. In 2005, she founded MUSE School, the first school in the country to be 100% solar powered with zero waste and a 100% organic, plant-based lunch program. Additionally, she is a founder of Verdient Foods, Cameron Family Farms, Food Forest Organics, and Red Carpet Green Dress. As an actor she has been featured in more than 25 films, including The Usual Suspects and Titanic.I thought this episode would be a good opportunity to give some air time to discussion of plant-based diets, but even if you disagree with the idea of plant-based diets, I suggest listening for at least three reasons: One, there's plenty of non-plant talk. Two, as an exercise in patience. I do my best to expose people to different perspectives, and this is no exception. Three, OMD (One Meal Per Day) is worth learning about to understand the discipline that goes into conscious eating and habit formation. And not to be missed, James mentions that unlike on previous films he didn't get sick during the simultaneous filming of Avatar 2 and 3, which is astonishing considering, as he put it, that "they [meaning all staff] know coming in when they sign up that it's going to be the most difficult production in human history." So how did he do it? He credits it to his new routine, including a plant-based diet, supplements, exercise, etc. I asked him for a sample day, which he provided. You can find James's super dialed-in daily routine for Avatar 2 and 3 at tim.blog/jamescameron.Please enjoy!P.S. And if you want to hear more from Suzy and James, you can find two bonus episodes published on the Tribe of Mentors podcast. This podcast is brought to you by Four Sigmatic. I reached out to these Finnish entrepreneurs after a very talented acrobat introduced me to one of their products, which blew my mind (in the best way possible). It is mushroom coffee featuring chaga. It tastes like coffee, but there are only 40 milligrams of caffeine, so it has less than half of what you would find in a regular cup of coffee. I do not get any jitters, acid reflux, or any type of stomach burn. It put me on fire for an entire day, and I only had half of the packet.People are always asking me what I use for cognitive enhancement right now -- this is the answer. You can try it right now by going to foursigmatic.com/tim and using the code Tim to get 20 percent off your first order. If you are in the experimental mindset, I do not think you'll be disappointed.***If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? “95% of all of the environmental issues out there trace back to animal agriculture and the havoc that it creates.”Suzy CameronPerhaps you know today’s guest from one of her 25+ roles on the silver screen appearing in movies like Titanic, Fandango and The Usual Suspects. Or maybe you know her as the better half of the world’s most successful film director, James Cameron – the incomparable mind behind the biggest cinematic blockbusters of all time: Aliens, Terminator, Titanic and of course Avatar – the highest grossing movie ever. But Suzy Amis Cameron is so much more than all that. In addition to raising five kids, she is a pioneering environmental activist. A passionate philanthropist. An education innovator. And the maverick co-founder (along with her sister Rebecca) of MUSE. Grabbing international headlines last year when it became the first U.S. school to implement a 100% plant-based school lunch program, MUSE is an incredibly progressive, paradigm breaking K-12 institution devoted to sustainability; creative & critical thinking; and preparing young people to live consciously within themselves, one another and the planet. A pretty great vision if you ask me.A living example of selfless advocacy in action, for the last 25 years Suzy has tirelessly dedicated herself to an array of environmental causes, working non-stop to reform education; combat global climate change; raze our execrable system of animal agriculture; overhaul our fatal addiction to the standard American diet; defeat chronic lifestyle disease; and engineer a better, healthier food system for all.Towards this end, in 2014 James and Suzy founded Food Choice Taskforce, a non-profit organization targeting the impact of animal agriculture on climate change to mobilize a global shift in food choice. She is also a founder of Food Forest Organics, a New Zealand-based plant-based cafe and marketplace, and Red Carpet Green Dress, showcasing socially and environmentally responsible fashions. This is a great conversation about her extraordinary life. It’s a conversation about the intricate, intertwined relationship between our actions and the biosphere. It’s about championing sustainable values – from what we do, to what we wear, to how we teach our children, to the food we eat. It's about how our consumer choices impact our personal health and the current and future health of this spinning blue globe we call home. And of course, it’s about what it’s like to be married to Hollywood’s most successful director.Specific topics covered include:* the impact of ‘Forks Over Knives’* environmental concerns and advocacy* animal agriculture as the center of all health issues* health sector and environmentalist summit* Chatham House research on agriculture & environment* communicating with the average person the powers of a plant-based diet* bringing about hope by changing what’s on our plate* the importance of support systems* MUSE School & MUSE Global* educating the community on the plant-based lifestyle* sustainability pledge & One Meal A Day* our youth, the global champions of tomorrow* typical day in the life of the Cameron’s* sustainable fashion* future projects to catalyze changeSuzy stirs me to do and be better.
