Tina Arena popped in and absolutely tore the roof off. We’re talking truth bombs, taped boobs, and tour dates, betch. She’s hitting the road around Australia through April and May for her Don’t Ask Again tour (yes, the hits are coming), and she'll be lighting up the Australian Idol grand finale this Sunday night on Channel 7. We covered everything from Splendour memories and Matt Corby duets to keeping the dream alive without chasing the fantasy. And look—Tina says if you’re not in this game for the right reason? Get out. Queen energy only. Also, she might call us next time she’s on mushrooms. Fingers crossed.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Ziggy Alberts over Zoom video!Ziggy Alberts is no stranger to success, having built a dedicated global following through a combination of steadfast touring, captivating songwriting, and an independent ethos that has seen him thrive without the backing of a major label. An artist who has mastered the acoustic charm of busking and intimate venues to the electrifying energy of sold-out world stages - all as a solo act - Alberts is now entering a new phase of his artistic journey with his seventh studio album, ‘New Love'.From his early days busking on the streets of Australia's Byron Bay, Alberts has always understood the power of direct connection with his audience. His rise has been driven not only by his emotionally resonant folk songs but by his determination to bring his music to fans face-to-face. Now a decade into his career, he has grown his fanbase the old-fashioned way: by playing show after show, year after year, turning small rooms into sold-out venues across the globe. His touring record is as impressive as it is diverse. In 2024, as part of his 70-date New Love World Tour, he delivered standout performances, including massive headline sets at Bluesfest Byron Bay and a co-headline SummerSalt run across Australia's east coast with Matt Corby and James Bay. The world tour has taken him across his homeland, Europe, the UK, North America, and Indonesia, with debut shows planned for Mexico and Japan. Among the tour highlights are his biggest German shows, drawing over 3,500 attendees in Hamburg and Munich. He also achieved sold-out shows in Vienna, and both Amsterdam and Mexico City twice over. This remarkable run follows his prolific 2023 Rewind World Tour, where he performed for over 110,000 people at his headline shows, sold out London's Eventim Apollo, completed a packed-out capital city tour in Australia, and made his debut in Brazil, playing to a crowd of 15,000 people at the Floripa Eco Festival.Alberts' audience isn't just global - it's fiercely loyal, built on the back of his tireless work ethic and unfiltered authenticity. His brand of acoustic, sun-soaked folk has struck a chord with listeners worldwide, combining deeply personal storytelling with universally relatable themes of love, self-discovery, and freedom. Alberts' resume speaks for itself: his discography has garnered over 1 billion streams, with hits like "Runaway," "Gone," and "Love Me Now" racking up millions of listens - "Runaway" surpassing 100 million streams on Spotify alone. His 2018 album ‘Laps Around The Sun' achieved ARIA Double Platinum Certification, with several singles also earning ARIA Platinum and Gold Certifications, underscoring his enduring appeal. He's taken home two APRA Music Awards for Most Performed Blues and Roots Work in both 2022 and 2024, further solidifying his standing in Australian folk music. For Alberts, ‘New Love' is a return to simplicity - a reflection of his own personal growth over the years. It explores themes of second chances, choosing joy, and navigating the complexities of modern life, but always with an underlying message of adventure and magic. The first singles from the record, "New Love," "Outlaw," and "Where Does The Love Go?", reveal this connection, blending personal reflection with universal emotions, while the acoustic folk sound and enchanting melodies give space for the stories to breathe. The album's structure, split between a warm, folk-inspired Side A and a more expansive, rock-and-country- influenced Side B, mirrors the duality of life. Side A represents the light, or North, with songs that feel familiar and intimate; while Side B ventures into darker tones and broader instrumentation, representing the South. It's this balance that makes ‘New Love' feel cohesive, giving the album a sense of being made to be listened to in its entirety, much like the records that inspired Alberts early on in his career. The release of ‘New Love' and the ongoing New Love World Tour showcases Alberts at a peak of his powers as a seasoned performer who has mastered the art of connecting with his audience. His determined touring schedule has not only expanded his global reach but has created a fanbase that feels deeply connected to his music and his message. His live shows have become more than just performances - they are shared experiences where fans from different countries and cultures come together, united by his music. We want to hear from you! It looks like you won't be hearing songs by Taylor Swift, Drake, Billie Eilish and more of the world's biggest artists on TikTok. The app has drawn millions of users through the creation and sharing of music content, but one of the world's biggest record labels is pulling its artists from TikTok. Universal Music Group (UMG) is pulling its catalogue of millions of songs — by everyone from Lady Gaga to Post Malone — after failing to come to terms with the hugely popular social media platform on a new licensing agreement, which expired on January 31. Locally, Universal Music Australia represents the likes of Tame Impala, Missy Higgins, Baker Boy, Matt Corby, Tkay Maidza, and Peach PRC, who was one of a handful of homegrown acts that topped the ARIA Album Charts in 2023. ikTok users would no longer have access to recordings controlled by UMG (estimated at 3 million works) or to songs whose rights are represented by its publishing arm (around 4 million songs). Last June, Tik Tok announced it was connected with 8.5 million Australians, and more than 300,000 domestic businesses. Universal says that Tik Tok accounts for 1% of its total revenue UMG released an open letter following the breakdown in negotiations Claiming they faced "bully" tactics and "intimidation" during negotiations. They accuse TikTok of offering royalty payments that are "a fraction of the rate that similarly situated major social platforms pay". TikTok meanwhile, say that "It is sad and disappointing that Universal Music Group has put their own greed above the interests of their artists and songwriters," TikTok wrote in a brief statement addressing UMG's claims and decision to cut ties. "Despite Universal's false narrative and rhetoric, the fact is they have chosen to walk away from the powerful support of a platform with well over a billion users that serves as a free promotional and discovery vehicle for their talent."" The platform adds that they have been "able to reach 'artist-first' agreements with every other label and publisher. "Clearly, Universal's self-serving actions are not in the best interests of artists, songwriters and fans." Thanks for listening! Be sure to subscribe for more content. We had the pleasure of interviewing Matt Corby over Zoom video!Matt Corby recently released his new album Everything's Fine, via Communion. His first album in five years, Everything's Fine vividly captures the personal and creative growth of Matt Corby who, like many, was tipped belly side up recently. Beyond the global touring pause, on the day he was meant to start recording his new album, Corby and his family were instead rescued by a neighbor. Their home had been engulfed by the flood waters that raged through Queensland and New South Wales, Australia, in early 2022. After nervously watching his heavily pregnant partner and young son be whisked away in a small inflatable dinghy, he got to work ferrying provisions to stranded locals and digging rotting mud out from beneath his home. With their home inundated by floodwaters, the whole family moved into Corby's Rainbow Valley Studios during the album's recording process. Juggling familial responsibilities with his creative pursuits was a one-of-a-kind pressure cooker circumstance that galvanized his artistic evolution.Firmly fixed on seeing the best of things, Matt reveals “I'm at a really beautiful point in my life. I'm accepting all this stuff: the good and the bad, but particularly the bad. Which is kind of great. It's a good thing to come to that point. Life isn't always magical, but the moments that are, well you really value them. I think this record is about that, about managing your actual reality. Sometimes I have those moments when you realize: well I'm still breathing, you still have the gift of life, so everything is fine I guess?”About Matt Corby:Recorded at his Rainbow Valley Studios with Chris Collins (Gang of Youths, Middle Kids, Skegss), Matt Corby's third studio album Everything's Fine picks up where his 2020 stand-alone singles, “If I Never Say A Word” and “Vitamin” left off after his J Award-winning 2018 LP Rainbow Valley. In the time since, Matt announced the launch of his own independent record label, in between loaning his production expertise to work by Genesis Owusu, Jack River, Great Gable, Bud Rokesky and most recently, his award-winning collaboration with Budjerah. We want to hear from you! Matt Corby's latest album 'Everything's Fine' was written at the peak of his songwriting powers, following five massive years of growth in his personal life and his artistic practice. The record is an incredible showcase of everything he's learned. But that's not to say this album is the biggest moment in Matt's career. He's been a singer his whole life. He started as a touring musician at 13 years old, became a TV star by the time he turned 16, signed huge record deals immediately after, and then got to work honing his craft, parring things back, and learning how to produce music. He speaks on his journey as a musician, the way his collaborations with other artists impacts their music and his, Sister Act, a room full of freezers, a natural disaster, and the most thoughtfully made end of year presentation of all time. Hello and welcome to episode 157 of the ACPG Podcast. In this episode Ben is zooming with Matt Corby. A solo artist from Australia. We're in the middle of a little run of Austrialian artists. Shame we couldn't record these in person in Australia. But you know, small details. Matt and Ben talk about his new album, Everything's Fine, playing live and Australian idol. The album was recorded at his own Rainbow Valley Studios with long time collaborators Alex Hendrickson and Chris Collins, and pop-writing savante Nat Dunn(Charli XCX, Tkay Maidza, Rita Ora). Together they drew out the sounds that make 'Everything's Fine' Matt Corby's most accomplished record yet. A sonically adventurous rumination on all of life's big stuff, it's a record that pulls together a decade of musical threads and production nous to reveal a body of work that glides even deeper into Corby's RnB roots, while embracing aspects of vintage funk, hip-hop and playful soft rock motifs. We hope you enjoy this episode and we promise normal service will resume next week as James is back from holiday. See you in a week with Hamish Hawk.

As broadcast November 7, 2022 because we just can't seem to get enough. Tonight we open with a dig at weak and befuddled Glasgow Rangers, but that's not the focus...although they are PATHETIC and generally terrible. We focus on the 2020 Rock Hall Inductees of which Depeche Mode was one in a very strong class. After that, it's all our favorite new tunes for the first half of the show finishing with a spotlight on Stella Donnelly playing in Seoul on December 6 at Rolling Hall. Part 3 as per usual we are Poppin' Off with the big new tunes over the weekend, with highlights from Selena Gomez, Masego, and BGYO, the latter of whom dropped a new album Friday! To finish in part 4, it's some of our favorite new Korean indie, with the big highlight coming at the grand finale with JAMBINAI announcing a new EP out next year!#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Depeche Mode – Just Can't Get EnoughPhoenix – After MidnightConnie Constance – KamikazeYves Tumor – God Is a CircleFirst Aid Kit – Palomino Samia – Mad At Me Part II (30:03)Caroline Rose – Love Lover Friendfanclubwallet – RoadkillThe Rare Occasions – Start This OverCavetown – Heart AttackMatt Corby – ProblemsStella Donnelly – Old ManMethyl Ethel feat Stella Donnelly - Proof Part III (59:31)Selena Gomez – My Mind & MeQ – Todayhemlock springs – girlfriendGryffin x Matt Maeson – Lose Your LoveMasego – Say You Want MeBGYO – Game OnAvril Levigne feat YUNGBLUD – I'm A Mess Part IV (90:11)ABOUT feat Hemo & HWI YOUNG – BurnQueenstown – No MatterNAMHYUK – Summer vacationMeaningful Stone – TrashLEEYOUNGWOONG feat JAEHA – DON'T WORRYJAMBINAI – from the place to be erased

We had the pleasure of interviewing Budjerah over Zoom video! Ahead of his first international tour this month, Budjerah reveals the moody official video for his latest single “Get Down”. The track is featured on his second EP Conversations, out now via Warner Records. On “Get Down,” producer Matt Corby's sparkling, glitched-out synths give way to one of Conversations' most affecting songs, a sleek jam whose ebb-and-flow melody underscores lyrics about anxiously forging forward through one's youth. “'Get Down' is about the idea that I've come so far now, I have to keep going, it's too late to stop what I'm doing now,” Budjerah says. “If there's a way, please show me how,” he sings on the track, a spiritual plea amidst a song suffused with an ultramodern atmosphere. On the recently released Conversations EP, Budjerah reunites with longtime producers Matt Corby and Chris Collins, as well as new collaborators MAY-A and Konstantin Kersting. The EP - which features previously released singles “Talk” with MAY-A, “Wash My Sorrows Away” and “What Should I Do?” - reveals a darker, sleeker sound for Budjerah, reflective of the changes that have occurred in his life. In 2020, Australia was introduced to the spectacular voice of Budjerah: a new, homegrown R&B star. Possessing songwriting ingenuity and old-soul wisdom, it quickly became abundantly clear that, for a lot of us, Budjerah was the kind of figure we'd been missing. His acclaimed debut self-titled EP followed in 2021, he took home the Michael Gudinski Breakthrough Artist ARIA award from five nominations; performed coveted support slots with Thelma Plum, The Avalanches and Lime Cordiale, collaborated with dance music superstars PNAU and completed his first headline tour. Most recently, Budjerah won Most Performed R&B / Soul Work for “Higher” and was nominated for Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year at the 2022 APRA Music Awards. We want to hear from you! Montaigne is a singer/songwriter/performer from Sydney, Australia - her new single "Now (In Space)" is out now, details at montaignemusic.com.auWe met on Twitter after she tagged me in a photo that she took of an old notebook full of "I love Matt Corby" signs she and her school friend had held up in a live audience at Australian Idol about 15 years ago. That she now has a job where she's a performer is so wonderful to see. She came around to my house one morning last week, and filled the room with a powerful and loving energy - she's a really special human. Even if you're not a music head or like other kinds of music, I'm sure you'll get a lot out of this chat - we cover what it means to redefine yourself through your appearance, struggles with parents around her sexuality, and what it is to make music for a living. I hope you get as much of a buzz out of listening to this as I did recording it. Enjoy this conversation with Montaigne. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
