In Life Hacks for a Little Alien, both the narrator and protagonist are unnamed. The debut novel from Alice Franklin is written from a second-person perspective and follows a little girl who experiences the world differently. Little Alien is neurodivergent, but undiagnosed, and often finds that people don't understand her. When she encounters an ancient text written in an unknown language, she sees parallels between its indecipherability and her own experiences. In today's episode, Franklin speaks with NPR's Scott Simon about the way she plays with language in her story, her own diagnosis journey, and our collective definition of normalcy. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Although they'd achieved some hits with ballads that they had produced, Stock Aitken Waterman were better known for their uptempo pop/dance tracks, but in mid-1990, four ballads in a row emerged from the Hit Factory. Three of those were the latest releases in the jukebox era series of remakes, with Big Fun ("Hey There Lonely Girl"), Sonia ("End Of The World") and Jason Donovan ("Rhythm Of The Rain") all reinterpreting golden oldies. In the cases of those first two artists, it would be their final singles with SAW — and we discuss what became of both Big Fun and Sonia after they parted ways with PWL. Also this episode, Lonnie Gordon's long-awaited follow-up to "Happenin' All Over Again" finally hit stores, but it was a complete change in style from the song that had taken her into the UK top 5. Mike Stock, Julian Gingell and Lonnie herself talk about the situation involving soulful ballad "Beyond Your Wildest Dreams" being chosen over clubbier tracks "How Could He Do This To Me" and "If I Have To Stand Alone".Subscribe for bonus material at chartbeats.com.au/sawTwitter: @ChartBeatsAU, @MrMattDenbyInstagram: @chartbeatsauFacebook: Chart Beats: A Journey Through PopEmail: chartbeats.au@gmail.com

Hiiiiya pals! This month, we're talking all about Jessie Tu's debut novel, A Lonely Girl Is A Dangerous Thing. It's a novel about a young Taiwanese-Australian woman named Jena Lin, who - after being recognised as a prodigy throughout childhood - has re-introduced classical violin back into her life as a 20-something Syndey-sider. We see Jena navigate relationships of all kinds in this book, and how those relationships affect the way she views and treats herself. The novel explores themes like sex, power, desire, and of course, the loneliness Jena can't quite shake. Today on the show, Mich, Zara, and Annabelle discuss it all: From whether you need to like a main character to like a book, to those graphic sex scenes and mysterious, unresolved plotlines. With her witty and self-deprecating takes on dating and the single life, the narrator of Miriam Karpilove's Diary of a Lonely Girl: Or the Battle Against Free Love is the 1918 Yiddish precursor to Girls' Hannah Horvath, Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, and Bridget Jones. instagram : https://www.instagram.com/vinephilo/http://vinephilo.comtwitter: https://twitter.com/vinephilohttps://www.tiktok.com/@vinephiloWhy are so many hot, sexy, girls lonely? The Hot, Lonely Girl in short is a lone wolf. She can't maintain a friend group to save her life. She has a hard time finding people to date, or is not interest in the ones that want to date her, thus leaving her without an "other". While all her friends are in long term relationships, getting married and having babies, the HLG seems to be falling the wayside. The HLG might even be content in singledom. The HLG paradox is not exclusive to women or relationships either. It is the person, who decided at 25 to take a chance on themselves and start their own business, while their friends have been on a set path since high school. The HLG is anyone taking the harder, longer, lonelier path--the path, that as hard as they may try--no one, except someone on a similar path, understands. This episode is about that. It's about having to be your own support system and your biggest advocate. It's about being there for yourself.
Jazz couple Petra Van Nuis and Andy Brown join Rick Kogan in studio to talk about their careers and their new album, Lonely Girl. Later, Rick reacts to a few of their songs off the album.

This week we will be discussing her personal life and next week we will be looking more specifically at her different works. During this episode we will be discussing her through the lens of the lonely girl and whether or not we think she was one herself. This episode is great for Jane-ites and those who half watched an adaptation five years ago. Her life alone is worth discussing and we do hope you will join us. ALSO, if you want to read or listen to the book that Rebecca got most of her information from go and check out Lucy Worsley's biography, Jane Austen at Home. Rebecca listened to it (as usual) but maybe buy a used copy to support small businesses! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
It's time to party because this week we're talking about all around good time Barbara Milicent Roberts. How DARE you think we would talk about anything else. The female-gaze-pink-tulle haze of Barbie movies began when Madelaine and Rebecca were the perfect age. At every sleepover, car ride, or babysitting gig there was sure to be a VHS with Barbie being a princess, fairy or fairy princess and we think that's AWESOME. Listen in to learn about why it's important for your children to play with dolls, what we can learn from a Barbie parable, and (obviously) if Barbie is a true Lonely Girl. Don't forget to follow us @lonelygirlspodcast for updates and we guess you can follow @turnermadelaine and @rebeccabotter if you want to. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Welcome all you Lonely Girls- to the premiere episode of The Lonely Girls Podcast. Today, Madelaine Turner and Rebecca Botter will be discussing the Patron Saint of Lonely Girls, writer Frances Hodgson Burnett. Sexy, right? This author and playwright is most famous for her children's novels A Little Princess and The Secret Garden. After learning a bit about the life of our Patron Saint, we use these two works to establish and analyze what truly is a Lonely Girl (and what truly is not). Do lonely circumstances make a Lonely Girl? Does having a dead dad make you hotter and cooler? Will either of us be able to pronounce Frances Hodgson Burnett correctly even once? Are diamond mines a good investment? Listen along and find out. Don't forget to follow us @lonelygirlspodcast for updates and we guess you can follow @turnermadelaine and @rebeccabotter if you want to. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
There is going to be one less lonely girl after this episode! This week we are discussing how to be alone, whether we even like alone time, and how independent we feel when we are alone. So let's charge up that social battery and figure it the f*** out because we need to run to Target and have some ~me time~.
This week we're covering non-binary trans filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun's screen life film, We're All Going To The World's Fair (2021).Along for the ride is Dread Central's Editor-In-Chief - and found footage expert - Mary Beth McAndrews, who praises World's Fair as a great example of a hybrid screen life film.Using interviews and quotes from Schoenbrun's director statement, Trace adds context to this ominous tale of internet celebrity while Mary Beth shares details of her childhood online, which includes catfishing!Plus: debates about what is real online, predatory behavior vs smart teens, Joe's fascination with Lonely Girl 15, Internet memes and creepy pastas, and our multiple interpretations of the film's ambiguous endingReference: Orla Smith. This week's episode is a doozy. Divine has had a rough couple of weeks. She's been spiraling while trying to get her life together but life does not care to be gotten. She's lowkey desperate for stability at this point, even going as far as seeing a psychic (not a tik tok one) for some hint of guidance. It helped but clearly not enough. In this episode Divine talks about the long, spiral of loneliness. The isolation, the self-doubt, and judgment that comes along with it. She details the spiral from just wanting a hug to her therapist asking her if she needs grippy socks

This episode is rated PG-13 as it discusses the significance of sex and sexuality in society and culture. The Speech Guys read and discuss excerpts from the final interview Marilyn Monroe gave just a few weeks prior to her taking her life in August 1962. This is the second episode in the "Speeches Before They Died" series. Questions and topics explored in this episode consider how Marilyn Monroe experienced both conflict and satisfaction with her fame and her depiction as a sexual object in culture, the masculine-feminine dynamic in the sexualization of women, the nature of beauty, glamor, and "sexualness", and the challenges in articulating and implementing an egalitarian notion of sexual responsibility! Special guest hosts include Anne Marie Williams and her sister Clare Schultz! Anne Marie references the contemporary academic consideration of sexual consent as an objective barometer of moral sexual behavior. Two pieces of scientific literature concerning this question are investigated in detail below. The first URL links a literature review published by the University of Tennessee in January 2017. The second links a paper published in Frontiers in Psychology in February 2020. This week, we're excited to be bringing you a collection of stories, poems and songs performed live at Boundless Festival of Indigenous and Culturally Diverse writers. Boundless is presented by Writing NSW and Bankstown Arts Centre and is made possible with the support of Create NSW, the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund and the Australia Council for the Arts. For more information about Boundless Festival, you can click here. In this episode we're sharing sharing three beautiful performances from the Boundless Program. The first two come from 'When Breath Meets Air,' a performance event curated by Tina Huang which aims to showcase the power of the spoken word and to highlight why– as Eileen Myles writes, we should “believe in sound.” Why we should believe in the tiniest shakings, in the smells dispersing, in the tingling moments between breath and between air. First we hear from Gomeroi poet, essayist and law academic Alison Whittaker. You can find Alison on Twitter @AJ_Whittaker. Next we hear from human rights activist, poet and writer Sara Saleh. Sara is the daughter of migrants from Palestine, Egypt and Lebanon and is currently living on Gadigal Land. Her work has been published in English and Arabic in various national and international outlets and anthologies. Sara was the first poet to win the Peter Porter Poetry Prize and the Judith Wright Poetry Prize, she is currently developing her first novel. You can find her @SaraSalehOz on Twitter and @instasaraade on Instagram. To close our episode, we have a poem performed by Nicole Smede as part of 'Empty City, Lonely Girl,' also curated by Tina Huang this performance event featured stories of loneliness and connection. Nicole is a multi-disciplinary artist of Worimi and European descent and uses language, song and poetry as a form of connection. Her voice can be heard on award-winning film scores, and poetry in visual and sound works, and publications including Guwayu: for all times, and 20x20x12 Sensing Place. You can find her @nicolesmede on Twitter and @nicole.smede on Instagram. Trudging towards the end of 2020, Crabb and Sales come together one last time. Ordinarily this end-of-year reckoning would occur on stage at the ANU amid low-grade insults directed at vice-chancellor and Bundt-auteur Brian Schmidt, but as with many pleasurable events in 2020 it was binned. Screw you, 2020! With their remaining nanoparticles of neural capacity, the pair recap what they can remember of what they read, watched, cooked, and listened to in this plague year.
