You’ve planned your budget, built your emergency fund, and followed all the financial advice... but what happens when life throws something so big, so chaotic, that none of it is enough? In this ep we're joined by special guests, and the writers of new book Broken Brains, Jamila Rizvi and Rosie Waterland. Two women whose lives were turned upside down by illness, trauma, and the brutal reality of trying to keep your head above water when your brain and body won’t cooperate, and the bills keep coming anyway. We talk about the invisible costs of being unwell, the gap between public support and real-life needs, and the quiet shame that follows financial instability and even lasagna inequality (yes, really). It’s raw, it’s funny, it’s deeply human, and it might be exactly what you need to hear right now. Content Warning: This episode contains discussions of serious mental illness, trauma, childhood abuse, psychiatric care, and financial distress. Please listen with care, and know that support is available. If you or someone you know is struggling, contact Lifeline at 13 11 14 or visit Beyond Blue. Jamila's craniopharyngioma had been growing for years, unbeknownst to her. In hindsight, it was her son who gave the first clue, when he stopped breastfeeding overnight at 11 months old.Today Jamila is an author, a broadcaster and the deputy managing director of Future Women, dedicated to achieving gender equity in Australian workplaces.A few years back, her life was on a powerful trajectory — she had been the chief of staff for a federal MP, written best-selling books and was a regular guest on TV panel shows. Then in 2017, she realised something was wrong with her health. At first she wasn't worried. Then, at 31 she was diagnosed with craniopharyngioma — a rare and recurring brain tumour. When Jamila left the world of the well, her life changed completely, in funny, strange, and harrowing ways.Jamila's book Broken Brains: For anyone who's been sick or loved someone who was is co-authored with Rosie Waterland and published by Penguin Random House. This interview was produced by Alice Moldovan. It's not until you've spent time in a country where English is an afterthought, where every sign, label, announcement and conversation is a mystery that you get an idea of how much we take literacy for granted.Without a way to understand the language of the country we're in it's almost impossible to get the things we need, things like food, healthcare, employment. You can feel quite powerless, you're even vulnerable to be taken advantage of.There is one language that's spoken the world over - and sorry, it's not love. It's money.Thankfully - we live in a world at the same time as Victoria Devine.Host of the podcast “She's on the Money”, her new book “The Business Bible” a guide to business ownership for people craving flexibility and independence.**LIVE SHOWS**STORY CLUB XMAS SPECTACULAR - Comedy Store Sydney Dec 8, 7pmFt Tanya Hennessey, Harry Garside, Rosie Waterland, Dj Hookie (Tom Nash), Emma Wortley and Zoë Norton-Lodge.LAST TICKETS HERE Hosted on Acast. Reality tv has always been a contentious category of television especially when it comes to authenticity and finding true love. Many of us love the drama, the tropes and stereotyping, even if we're just poking fun at it. This session at All About Women 2023 explored Brooke Blurton's time on The Bachelorette and Rosie Waterland's satirical take on dating shows. Hosted by Nakkiah Lui, they delve into what it's like to participate in traditionally heteronormative dating shows as a queer person, trying to find a genuine connection on tv and what this voyeuristic search for romance reveals about Australian culture. This event was recorded live at the Sydney Opera House in March 2023. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

A BIG, CAPS LOCK HAPPY THURSDAY TO YOU, SHAMELESS PALS!If you haven’t listened to one of these before, this ‘The Archives’ series ventures deep into our backlog of chats to re-visit some of my (Annabelle's) absolute favourite moments of Shameless interviews. Mich and Zara return from their mid-year break on Monday, so this will be the last bonus episode for a little while.Today, we’re talking about mental health. The fact is, a significant portion of the population will be diagnosed with a mental disorder at some point in their life. Yet still, a lot of us find it difficult to talk about our own struggles. What makes it feel a little less lonely, though? Hearing people in the public sphere so honestly share their own stories; stories many might resonate with in one way or another.Today, we hear from: Georgie Dent, Osher Günsberg, Nawal Sari, Brandon Jack, Matt Okine, Abbie Chatfield, Hugh van Cuylenberg, Rosie Waterland, Mitchell Orval, Ash London, Celia Pacquola, Jules Von Hep, and Tanya Hennessy. As for us? Here are all the links your heart desires! Our book-club.Our Insta profile. Our Facebook Group. And our weekly newsletter!Shameless Podcast is very much an independent vehicle that runs on the support of our incredible listeners - that's you! BOO! IT’S ANNABELLE! WITH A SURPRISE EPISODE!As you might know already, the girls are on their mid-year break for three weeks, so I’ve put together a few bonus episodes of some of my favourite moments of Shameless interviews, to fill the Mich and Zara shaped hole in my podcast feed. We hear from past conversations with activists, influencers, entrepreneurs - you name it. In fact, I’ll name them all below and leave links to find their full Shameless interviews there, too.Today’s lineup: Flex Mami, Courtney Act, Dylan Alcott, Emma Isaacs, Cyan Ta’eed, Zoë Foster Blake, Jess Quinn, Marlee Silva, Lana Wilkinson, Georgie Stone, Jules Von Hep, Rosie Waterland, Matt Okine, Clare Bowditch, Jan Fran, and Emma Carey. As for us?
