Maggiori dettagli sui temi trattati in ogni singolo incontro saranno diffusi a partire dalle prossime settimane.

Tributes are being paid to the Clare woman who provided a light in the darkest moments to countless women and young families across the county. Mary Fitzgerald, who was one of the original founders of Clare Haven over 30 years ago, will be laid to rest this lunchtime after a funeral mass at Kilnamona Church. Before establishing the county's first dedicated 24/7 refuge service for victims of domestic abuse in 1993, Mary took vulnerable women and their children into her own home. For her efforts, she was named the Christine Buckley volunteer of the year in 2018 and was inducted into the Clare Association of Dublin Hall of Fame two years later. Today, Mary's workshops to establish abusive patterns early in relationships, still remain part of the SPHE programme taught in secondary schools. Director of Clare Haven Services Dr Siobhán O'Connor says Mary's legacy will be everlasting.

Susan and Cissy continue their conversation with Mary Fitzgerald.  She gives great advice like watching peers of the same age as the individuals you are working with to see what makes for fun social activities.  Uno can be fun, but if no one in their school is doing that, we should do something else.  They also talk about the impact inclusion has had such that individuals with special needs participate regularly in activities in their school and community.  She also talks about the importance "consent for touch".  Asking for permission to provide physical support teaches that others should ask as well and that we all have the right to say "no".

Mary Fitzgerald is a master educator.  She has worked with school districts, educational service centers, and with business partners for many years making education better for many, many students.  In this conversation, she emphasizes the importance of presuming competence with students as we interact with them and around them.  In this first half of the conversation, she talks about a student who had been hitting peers who were interacting with her.  Presuming that she could participate in a conversation with her peers about this made a big difference.  She has many stories to illustrate such a difference it can make to remember that everyone should be treated with respect.  Have a listen and come back for the rest of the conversation next week.  Thank you!

It was a chance meeting in 1992 which brought Ennis women Colette Reddington and Mary Fitzgerald together. When their paths crossed, both were seeking shelter for victims of domestic abuse, but were struggling to find local services. After realising there were no refuges available, not only in their hometown of Ennis, but in the entire county of Clare, the women decided to take action. Now, their incredible thirty year journey helping those fleeing abusive homes, is the subject of a new book Light On The Horizon, which details the establishment of Clare Haven refuge services and the charity Haven Horizons. In this episode, Róisín Ingle is joined by co-founder Colette and by Madeline McAleer, who is director of research, training and development. They speak about the humble beginnings of the refuge, the expansion in services over the years and why education is key to breaking the cycle of domestic abuse. Hosted on Acast.
