Join Jim and Greg for 3 Martini Lunch as they discuss breaking news in the New Hampshire Senate race, a poll showing strong public demand for lower federal spending, how Trump-era tariffs may end up weakening Russia, and the strange presidential buzz surrounding ESPN's Stephen A. Smith.First, just two days after President Trump publicly backed former New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu for U.S. Senate, Sununu has announced he will not enter the race. Jim and Greg briefly assess how this could impact Republican chances of flipping the seat in 2026.Next, they dig into a new Wall Street Journal poll showing more than two-thirds of Americans want federal spending cut. While not all support the GOP's approach, the poll confirms deep frustration with nearly $37 trillion in national debt and massive annual deficits. Jim questions how many Americans would agree on where to cut, while Greg recalls the narrow political window when this debt crisis might have been averted in the 1990s.Then, they're pleased to see one way Trump's tariff strategy is already creating pressure on Russia. One of the side effects of the new policy is that oil prices are down significantly since last week. Jim tells us how sustained lower prices could spell big trouble for Putin economically and militarily. Finally, they roll their eyes at growing chatter about ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith running for president in 2028. And now Smith himself is saying he's starting to think about it. Smith gained attention last year for supporting Kamala Harris but frequently calling out Democrats for being out of touch - especially on some key cultural issues. Jim and Greg dismiss the hype and even joke that Smith wouldn't be the best presidential pick at ESPN.Please visit our great sponsors:BetterHelp sponsors this podcast. Your well-being is worth it. Join Jim and Greg for Monday's 3 Martini Lunch as they discuss President Trump urging former New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu to run for U.S. Senate in 2026, confusion among Trump's own advisers over the purpose and length of the latest tariffs, and new reporting on how The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg ended up in a classified White House Signal chat about Yemen.First, they break down President Trump's full support for former New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu for U.S. Senate in 2026. Trump also revealed that he and Sununu had spoken about the race in the Oval Office. It's a notable shift in their relationship, which has previously been tense. They also examine the likely Democratic opponent and key dynamics that could shape the race.Next, Jim analyzes the weekend talk show appearances by several Trump administration officials attempting to explain the new tariffs. He demonstrates how Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, NEC Director Kevin Hassett, trade adviser Peter Navarro, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick offered conflicting statements about the tariffs' purpose, duration, and expected economic impact. Finally, they react to the apparent explanation for how Jeffrey Goldberg gained access to a White House Signal chat about military strikes in Yemen. They dig into the details and why this explanation makes more sense, but Jim still warns that private messaging apps like Signal are not secure enough for these discussions. Please visit our great sponsors:BetterHelp sponsors this podcast. Today, Greg and Jim dissect the positive trend of Republican voters registering in encouraging numbers in several key battleground states, the concerning impingement of Russia on the Estonian border, and a reality at the border that's so alarming that even illegal immigrants are concerned about it. Plus, some fun with outgoing New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu's unvarnished opinions of other governors. First, they analyze the data showing that Republicans are registering voters in higher numbers in battleground states. They consider what the causes of this trend might be, pointing out how anti-establishment young voters might be rebelling against the left, which they see as the establishment.Next, they raise their eyebrows at the news that Russia has moved buoys along the Narva River that distinguish its territory from Estonia. They wonder why the US has so far refrained from commenting on the situation, though Estonia and NATO seem to be on high alert at this encroachment. Then they highlight the testimony of an illegal immigrant from Turkey, who expresses shock at the lack of security at the U.S. Border. Finally, they wrap up the episode with a good laugh courtesy of Gov. Chris Sununu called for a state lawmaker who's repeatedly pushed COVID-19 misinformation to be stripped from his leadership position after he blasted out an email to colleagues suggesting that the coronavirus vaccine contains a “living organism with tentacles” and darkens the eyes of newborns. It's hard for me to fathom that so many of the leaders of our nation actually believe that the COVID-19 vaccine contains mind-controlling nanobots, makes you magnetic, causes people to become zombies, contains tentacle-creatures, makes babies transhuman or any of the other non-proven crap that's floating around on the internet. I can believe that most of the population believes this stuff because so many of us are complete idiots and don't know how to do proper research. But our leaders? They're supposed to be among the best of us. They're supposed to be smarter than what they're proving to be.
This week on Under The Radar: While Massachusetts debates vaccine and mask mandates, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu signed a bill into law last week that supporters say establishes "medical freedom." Residents in the state who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 can still access public facilities and services, under the new law. The law states that all residents have the “natural, essential and inherent right to bodily integrity, free from any threat or compulsion by government to accept an immunization.” But our guest Arnie Arnesen thinks that it will create greater levels of vulnerability, based on the politics of the legislature and the governor. "It is not about science, it is not about health, it is all about politics." Other topics on our Regional Roundtable this week include a potential hate crime on Martha's Vineyard and regional home-seekers buying up Rhode Island property. Guests: Arnie Arnesen, host of The Attitude with Arnie Arnesen from WNHN in New Hampshire. Ted Nesi, politics and business editor and investigative reporter for WPRI in Rhode Island. George Brennan, news editor of the Martha's Vineyard Times.
New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu joins NHJournal's Michael Graham for a wide-ranging, no-holds-barred conversation covering everything from abortion policy to Sununu's potential U.S. Senate bid against incumbent Sen. Maggie Hassan.
