Friends of the Rosary, We hear the "Parable of the Talents" in Matthew 25:14–30 today. It tells of a master who was leaving his house to travel and, before leaving, entrusted his property to his servants. According to each man's abilities, one servant received five talents, the second two, and the third only one. The first man trades with the five talents. The second does the same, and both receive a rich return on their investment. The third man cautiously buries his talent. When the owner returns, he praises the first two servants and gives them more significant responsibilities, but to the third man, the talent is taken away from him and given to the one with ten.Talents are everything that we've received from God—life, breath, being, powers. Because they come from God, they are meant to become gifts. They wither away if you cling to them like the third servant. As Jesus said, "For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich;but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away." Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Friends of the Rosary, Today's Gospel (Mt 25:1-13) features the parable of the Kingdom of Heaven and the ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five were foolish, and five were wise. Through the parable, Christ Jesus invites us to "stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour." At that time, following the Jewish customs, the bridesmaids would wait for the groom and, upon his appearance, accompany him. This is the Christian community of believers waiting for Christ the groom to arrive. During this long waiting period, we must be wise and pray, live a sacramental life, be people of love, and educate ourselves in the faith. If we neglect these requirements, we won't be admitted to the glory of Heaven. "The divine life, so cultivated, cannot simply be shared with another at the last minute. A saint can't simply infuse his life into another; it just doesn't work that way," explains Bishop Barron. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Come, Holy Spirit, come! Friends of the Rosary, Today, August 29, is the Memorial of the Passion of St. John the Baptist, the greatest of the Old Testament prophets. On June 24, we celebrated the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, and today, we honor the anniversary of his martyrdom. Besides Our Lord and Our Lady, St. John the Baptist is the only one whose birth and death are thus celebrated. Since the fourth century, the Church has commemorated Christ's precursor's martyrdom. The saint's venerable head is venerated at various places. Today's Gospel relates the circumstances of his execution. When John rebuked King Herod for his unlawful union with Herodias, his brother's wife, Herod imprisoned John. Herodias took advantage of an unexpected opportunity to obtain the saint's beheading through her daughter Salome. St. John the Baptist was a cousin of Jesus. His mission was to preach repentance to Israel in preparation for the coming of the Messiah. He also preached the freedom of heavenly peace. By his suffering, John the Baptist showed that Christ also would suffer. The apostle Paul rightly explained: "You have been granted the privilege not only to believe in Christ but also to suffer for his sake." He told us why it is Christ's gift that his chosen ones should suffer for him: "The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed in us." Friends of the Rosary, Today, the Catholic Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Monica (333-387), the mother of St. Augustine — whose feast is tomorrow. Through prayer and tears, St. Monica quietly gave the great Augustine to the Church. Born in Tagaste, northern Africa, Monica was given in marriage to a pagan named Patricius, a man of loose morals with a very irascible nature. It was in this school of suffering that Monica learned patience. Evil-minded servants prejudiced her mother-in-law against her, but Monica mastered the situation with kindness and sympathy. Monica persevered and prayed to convert her husband, who was baptized a year before his death. The Confessions of St. Augustine provide specific biographical details. When Augustine joined the Manichean sect and went astray in faith and morals, Monica's tears and prayers for her son were incessant. She followed him to Milan, where Augustine went to teach, and there continued to storm heaven with her prayers for her son. Finally, the moment came, and her tears of sorrow changed to tears of joy. She had the joy of witnessing St. Ambrose baptize Augustine in 387. Her lifework was completed. She died in Ostia, near Rome, in her fifty-sixth year. The description of her death is one of the most beautiful passages in her son's famous Confessions. Also, today is the feast of the Seven Joys of the Blessed Virgin Mary or the Franciscan Crown. Friends of the Rosary, Today, we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Częstochowa, also known as the Black Madonna. The icon in Jasna Góra Monastery in Częstochowa, Poland, is traditionally believed to have been painted by St. Luke the Evangelist on a cypress wood panel from a table used by the Holy Family in Nazareth. St. Helen, the mother of Emperor Constantine and collector of Christian relics in the Holy Land, discovered the icon. The icon was then enshrined in the imperial city of Constantinople, where it remained for the next 500 years. In the 14th century, it was brought to Poland and is still enshrined in Jasna Góra Monastery in Częstochowa, Poland. The image of Our Lady of Częstochowa is associated with several historical miraculous events, as well as spontaneous healings occurring to those who made a pilgrimage to the portrait. After the liberation of Poland from Nazi occupation, 1.5 million people gathered at Jasna Góra in 1945 to rededicate the nation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Pope John Paul II visited the image of Our Lady of Częstochowa four times during his pontificate. Our Lady's intercession is credited with the liberation of Poland from Communist rule. It is known as the “Black Madonna” because of the soot residue that discolors the painting. The soot results from centuries of votive lights and candles burning before the painting. Today, the Shrine of Our Lady of Częstochowa attracts millions who love and honor Our Lady's intercession. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!Our Lady of Częstochowa, Pray for Us! Friends of the Rosary, At that time in Galilee, many of the disciples returned to their former way of life, and no longstanding accompanied him when they heard about the divinity of Christ reflected in the invitation to eat his body and drink his blood — the doctrine of the Blessed Eucharist, well-known today. The passage—included in the Gospel of John that we read today (John 6:60-69)—continues: "Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?"Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go?You have the words of eternal life.We have come to believeand are convinced that you are the Holy One of God." Today, many people reject the Lordship of Jesus Christ, and even many lukewarm Catholics wrongly believe the Holy Communion is symbolic and not fit for our earthly journey. Two thousand years ago, the "disciples" who murmured saw nothing but a man in Christ. They refused to open their minds, and their minds were earth-bound. Faith is a gift of the Father, and He offers graciously despite many refusing to accept it. Christ left us himself in the Eucharist as a sacrifice and a sacrament for our spiritual nourishment. It was an act of divine power and, as such, beyond full human comprehension. He gave the Communion to his Apostles and their successors the power to repeat this act of divine love when he said: "Do this in memory of me" during Mass. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Friends of the Rosary, Today, August 24, we celebrate the feast of St. Bartholomew, one of the twelve Apostles of Christ. St. Bartholomew, also known as Nathaniel, was a doctor in Jewish law and a dear friend of St. Philip the Apostle. Because Bartholomew was a man "in whom there was no guile," his mind was open to the truth. He went willingly with Philip to see Christ and recognized the Savior immediately as the Son of God. Following the Ascension and after receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost, Bartholomew evangelized Asia Minor, northwestern India, and Greater Armenia. He was martyred there. While still alive, his skin was torn from his body. Today is also the day of Our Lady Health of the Sick, celebrated on the Saturday before the last Sunday of August. This is one of the titles in the Litany to Our Lady of Loretto. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!St. Bartholomew, Pray for Us! Come, Holy Spirit, come! Friends of the Rosary, Today, August 23, we celebrate the memorial of St. Rose of Lima (1586-1617), Virgin, the first canonized saint of the New World. She consecrated her life to God very young, vowing her innocence to the Divinity. She practiced intense prayer and penance daily, living a heroic life of virtue and penance. Inspired by St. Catherine of Siena's example, Rose became a Dominican lay tertiary and devoted herself to works of active charity while living a life of extreme austerity. St. Rose of Lima suffered repeated attacks from the devil, painful bodily ailments, and from her family, scoldings and calumnies. She died at 31, praying, “Lord, increase my sufferings, and with them increase your love in my heart.” Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!St. Rose of Lima, Pray for Us! Come, Holy Spirit, come! Friends of the Rosary, Today, the faithful celebrate the Memorial of the Queenship of Mary. On her Assumption to Heaven, our Blessed Mother was solemnly reunited with her Son, and Our Lord Jesus has crowned Our Lady as Queen of Heaven and Earth. The Church celebrates Mary's, Mother of God's, queenship as a share in Jesus's kingship. This title of Queen is applied to the Mother of God since she was so closely associated with the redemptive work of her Son and is the Mediatrix of all graces. This Feast was established by Pope Pius XII in 1954. However, Mary's Queenship is not only based on Sacred Tradition but anciently rooted in the Scripture. The Archangel Gabriel, at the Annunciation, proclaimed that Mary would “bear a son, Jesus,” who would be given “the throne of David, his father” and “of his kingdom there will be no end” (Luke 1:31-33). Saint Elizabeth, at the Visitation, ardently addressed Mary as “the mother of my Lord” (Luke 1:43). Both narratives point to how the mother of the King is herself a Queen. This Feast reminds us to venerate Mary with devotion and love and to enthrone the Queen of Heaven and Earth in our hearts and homes. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Come, Holy Spirit, come! Friends of the Rosary, Today, we celebrate the Memorial of St. Pius X, Pope (1835-1914). He was a defender of the purity of Christian doctrine and worked for the restoration of the Church's worship. Today is also the anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady of Knock in Ireland. On August 21, 1879, Our Lady appeared with St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist in Knock in County Mayo. 15 people witnessed her. To the left of St. John, dressed as a mitered bishop, stood a simple altar with a young lamb before a cross. Angels encircled this area. The figures, all robed in white, were raised a couple of feet above. In the vision, which lasted about two hours, Mary stood in the middle, clothed in white garments. She wore a brilliant crown and a golden rose over her forehead, and her hands were raised as if in prayer. The silent apparition spoke louder than words with an eloquent message uniting earth and heaven. All knew it was Mary, the Mother of Jesus, Queen of Angels. People not at the apparition site reported seeing a bright light illuminate the area around the church. Many of the sick were healed upon visiting the church at Knock. A golden rose is often the symbol of this Marian apparition. Pope St. John Paul II presented a golden rose to the Shrine on his visit on September 30, 1979. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Friends of the Rosary, Jesus reveals to us that anyone following him will receive a hundred times more in this life and eternal life. As we read today, he said to his disciples (Mt 19:23-30): "Amen, I say to youthat you who have followed me, in the new age, when the Son of Man is seated on his throne of glory, will yourselves sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sistersor father or mother or children or landsfor the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first." Today, we celebrate the Memorial of St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153), the French abbot who perfected the Cistercian monastic rule. It would become the model for 163 monasteries of the Cistercian reform. He was a theologian, poet, orator, writer, and one of the last Church Fathers. St. Bernard of Clairvaux was an apostle of the Crusades, miracle worker, reconciler of kings, the leader of peoples, and the counselor of popes. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Friends of the Rosary, Christ Jesus revealed to us (John 6:51–58), as we read yesterday in the New Testament, "My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him." When we eat this flesh and drink his blood in the Eucharist, we unite with Him and become his image on Earth. Or, at least, that is or should be our goal. We are what we eat. The Eucharist touches our souls, and by receiving Him, we declare that we want to grow in holiness and become saints. The Holy Host immortalizes those faithful who consume it. Christifies us, and not in a metaphorical way. The Doctrine of the Real Presence is a universal truth critical for our survival. The recipient of the Communion sees — or should see — how his life should be transformed in body, mind, emotions, and spirit. He becomes ordered to the realm of God. Bishop Barron wrote yesterday, "The Christified person knows that his life is not finally about him but about God; the Eucharistized person understands that her treasure is to be found above and not below." "Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them;for the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." The Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like children. Bishop Barron writes: "Children are like stars or flowers or animals, things that are what they are, unambiguously, uncomplicatedly. They are in accord with God's deepest intentions for them." Friends of the Rosary, Today, in the reading of the New Testament (Mt 19:3-12), Christ Jesus explains the mystery of marriage. "From the beginning, the Creator made them male and female and said,For this reason a man shall leave his father and motherand be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, man must not separate." "I say to you, whoever divorces his wife(unless the marriage is unlawful)and marries another commits adultery." "Some are incapable of marriage because they were born so;some, because they were made so by others;some, because they have renounced marriagefor the sake of the Kingdom of heaven.Whoever can accept this ought to accept it." Marriage is God's invention, and his idea was the union between a man and a woman. Marriage has so many enemies who seek to pervert and destroy it. Divorce is rampant, adultery is common, and "same-sex marriage" is now socially accepted. However, marriage is not an artificial construct of a particular culture. It pre-dates cultures, civilizations, political parties, and ideologies. Pope John Paul II, in his "Theology of the Body," saw an integral connection between the mystery of creation and the sacrament of marriage. Friends of the Rosary, Today, August 15, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a holy day of obligation for Catholics. In 1950, Pius XII proclaimed the Assumption of Mary a dogma of the Catholic Church in these words: "The Immaculate Mother of God, the ever-virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heaven." Pius Parsch, in The Church's Year of Grace, wrote: “Now, toward the end of summer, when fruits are ripe in the gardens and fields, the Church celebrates the most glorious "harvest festival" in the Communion of Saints. Mary, the supremely blessed one among women, Mary, the most precious fruit that has ripened in the fields of God's kingdom, is today taken into the granary of heaven." The celebration of the Assumption is the oldest feast day of Our Lady. It was the "Memory of Mary." Its origin is traced to when Jerusalem was restored as a sacred city during the reign of the Roman Emperor Constantine (c. 285-337). On a hill near Mount Zion in Palestine was the "Place of Dormition," the spot of Mary's "falling asleep." The belief in the Assumption dates back to the apostles themselves. Mary expired in the presence of the disciples of Christ, and her tomb, when opened later, was found empty. The apostles concluded that the body was taken into heaven and transferred to the glory of eternity. The location of that empty tomb is today the Benedictine Abbey of the Dormition of Mary, a place of pilgrimage on the edge of Jerusalem. In the seventh century, the feast was celebrated in Rome as the "Falling Asleep" ("Dormitio") of the Mother of God. Today, this solemnity day looks to eternity. It is not just the commemoration of a historical event. It also gives us hope to follow Our Lady when our lives are over. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Come, Holy Spirit, come! Friends of the Rosary, The Catholic faith is a divine gift that surpasses our understanding. Just take a look at loved ones who are not faithful. Consider how much pain they endure in their darkness. We, too, feel pain because we love them. Vatican II explained the faith this way: "God, out of the abundance of his love, speaks to men as friends and lives among them so that he may invite and take them into fellowship with himself." The Father did not put us on earth and left us on our own with nowhere to go except to the grave. He sent his beloved Son on earth. He made us heirs to heaven, leaving all the instruction and aid we need to reach our inheritance in his Church. The unbelievers and free-thinkers may feel free to do what they will, but that is untrue. They are slaves of sin and darkness, while we are children of the light, and we are given freedom for eternity. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!St. Clare, Pray for Us! Come, Holy Spirit, come! Friends of the Rosary, As we read today Sunday (Jn 6:41-51), Christ announced the doctrine of the Eucharist by stating that He gives his body as spiritual food to those who believe in Him and want eternal life. "I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world." The Jews of that time didn't acknowledge this teaching in the Eucharist. Nor did they accept Christ as divine, as the Son of God, and as the only One who had seen the Father. They saw nothing in him but a native of Nazareth, a humble Galilean like themselves. This unbelief is the same today. Man is proud of his intelligence and treats whatever he cannot grasp within the limited confines of that intellect as non-existent. The divine doesn't fit in with man's preconceived ideas. And his finite mind remains the sole judge and arbiter of all truth. But we, the baptized in the true faith, have received the grace to believe in a loving God, and in his divine Son, Jesus Christ, who came on earth to bring us to heaven, and the Holy Spirit, who completes the work of sanctification in us. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank the Almighty for giving us the Christian faith. Today is the Memorial of St. Clare of Assisi, which is superseded by the Sunday liturgy. Friends of the Rosary, Today, August 10, is the Feast of St. Lawrence, the highly venerated Roman deacon and saint of the mid-third century who suffered a heroic martyrdom. This Christian hero's feast is next to St. Peter and St. Paul's. He was arrested during the persecution of Emperor Valerian (253-260), laid upon a gridiron, and slowly roasted to death. At that time, Pope Sixtus II and his four deacons were martyred too. He expired, praying for the conversion of the city of Rome in the hope that the true faith might spread throughout the world. From that moment, idolatry began to decline in Rome. Before being tortured and while in prison, the Roman authorities asked him to surrender the treasures of the Church. Lawrence responded by bringing together the poor and sick he had supported. "Here are the treasures of the Church!" Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!St. Lawrence, Pray for Us! Come, Holy Spirit, come! Friends of the Rosary, Every August, we honor the two martyrs of Auschwitz: St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross and St. Maximilian Kolbe. We need to pray hard that we and our world don't return to the inhumanity of violence and war. The social acceptance of euthanasia and abortion puts us on the wrong track. Today, August 9, we celebrate the memorial of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (1891-1942), Virgin and martyr, also known as St. Edith Stein. Born into a prominent Jewish family in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland), she became a brilliant philosopher, a PhD, a teacher and lecturer at major universities in Germany, and a prolific writer. Captivated by the autobiography and the writings of Teresa of Avila, she converted to Catholicism and entered the Discalced Carmelites in 1933 in Echt, Netherlands. She was arrested by the Nazis when they occupied this country, along with all Catholics of Jewish extraction. Teresa Benedicta and her sister Rosa, also a Catholic, were transported on a cattle train to the death camp of Auschwitz. Friends of the Rosary, Today, August 8, we celebrate the feast day of St. Dominic of Guzman, founder of the Order of Preachers, the Dominicans. This order, the most powerful in Medieval times, contributed immensely to maintaining the purity of the faith. Among the Dominicans were the most illustrious preachers and contemplatives, saints like Vincent Ferrer, Thomas Aquinas, and Pius V. St. Dominic was also the founder of the devotion of the Holy Rosary of Mary. Across history, saints, popes, and faithful scholars have attributed the origin and spread of the Holy Rosary to St. Dominic. At the end of the twelfth century, the Church in France was ravaged by the Albigensian heresy, a social evil doctrine. St. Dominic's Rosary preaching, apostolic poverty, and burning zeal for souls would end with the heresy of the Albigensian. St. Dominic was born in Castile, Spain. His Mother, Juana de Aza, had dreamed during her pregnancy that she was carrying in her womb a little dog that held a burning torch between its teeth, and when she gave birth, it set the whole world on fire. St. Dominic would inflame the nations to practice Christian virtue through the Rosary, his example's brightness, and his preaching's fiery ardor. Friends of the Rosary, This Monday, on the feast of Our Lady of the Snows, we mediated upon the grace that the Mother of God distributes to the Church. "Just like a midsummer snowfall in Rome, grace arouses marvel and amazement. Let us not forget these two words. We cannot lose the ability to marvel and be amazed, as they are part of our faith experience," said Pope Francis during the mass celebration at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. This miraculous midsummer snowfall that occurred in the year 358 was represented by the traditional shower of white rose petals that fell from the ceiling of the Basilica of St. Mary Major. In his contemplation of the gem of the basilica—the ancient icon of Salus Populi Romani (Our Lady Savior of the People)—the pope said the miracle of the snow symbolizes Mary, the only woman created who is full of grace, conceived without original sin, and immaculate. Grace is essential in our faith journey. We are invited to keep a sense of wonder in the action of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Come, Holy Spirit, come! Friends of the Rosary, Today's reading in the Gospel (John 6:24-35) reveals us an eternal truth: "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst." In raining down bread from heaven upon the Israelites, the Lord wanted them to "know that I, the Lord, am your God". Similarly, Jesus reveals to the crowd that He is "the bread of God, which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." The truth is in Jesus, as St. Paul reminds us. We find Him in the Holy Eucharist, in the holy sacrifice of Mass. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Come, Holy Spirit, come! Friends of the Rosary, Evil political and societal structures grow like weeds on Earth as an extension of dark power. We face them through non-stop prayer, avoiding obsessing about the works of the Evil One. Christ the Lord revealed that no entity or power can separate us from Him. We rest confident in His eternal Word. At that time, and as we read in the Gospel today (Matt 14:1-12), the wicked tetrarch Herod had John the Baptist beheaded, trying to disrupt the nascent Church of God. He made the prophet John the Baptist a protomartyr of Christ's followers, the first of many martyrs. Today, from atheistic and Islamic countries to Western secular nations, Christians continue to be persecuted. In too many places, they are risking their lives for their faith. Their courage is admirable, and even if we don't mention them in our daily prayer, we recognize them as our contemporary martyrs facing evil earthly powers. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Friends of the Rosary, August is the month dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It's also the month of the Assumption of the Blessed Mother, when at the close of her earthly life, she was taken up, body and soul, into the glory of heaven. This solemnity falls on August 15th. In the upcoming weeks, we honor beloved saints, including St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Dominic, St. Bartholomew, St. Augustine, St. Monica, St. Clare, St. Rose of Lima, St. Pius X, and St. Lawrence. We add on August 5, Our Lady of Snow — la Virgen Blanca, and here will remember María Blanca, founder of the Rosary Network— and on August 22, Queenship of Mary. Feasts for August 1. Friends of the Rosary, Today is the Memorial of St. Alphonsus de Liguori (1696-1787), founder of the preaching order of the Redemptorists, bishop, priest, and doctor of the Church. He was known for contributing to moral theology — he wrote "Moral Theology." Alphonsus was a great preacher of the Gospel to the poor. Like our Lord did the Apostles, he sent his Redemptorists to announce the Kingdom of God and work among the country people of Italy, who often lacked the opportunity for missions, religious instruction, and spiritual retreats. At the age of sixteen, Alphonsus received his doctorate in both canon and civil law and, for nearly ten years, practiced at the bar. When he found that one of the legal cases he was defending was not based on justice but on political intrigue, he gave up law practice and dedicated his life to God. As bishop of Sant' Agata dei God, he corrected abuses, restored churches, reformed seminaries, and promoted missions throughout his diocese. His charity and generosity were boundless during the famine of 1763-64. He is the patron saint of confessors, moral theologians, and vocations. Friends of the Rosary: We honor today two saints mentioned in the Gospels who lived in the first-century in Jerusalem at the time of Christ: Saints Joseph Arimathea and Nicodemus. Joseph of Arimathea was a wealthy member of the temple council and a secret follower of Jesus. Nicodemus was a Pharisee and member of the Sanhedrin, who defended Jesus' cause. Saint John even says that it was to Nicodemus that our Lord said, “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus prepared Jesus' body, wrapped it in linen, and placed him in the tomb owned by Joseph. Friends of the Rosary: Our lack of trust in the Savior, Christ, damages His sacred heart, not to mention our own souls. Without faith, there can be no hope, joy, or peace. Why do our hearts continue to remain as stones of unbelief? This thought arises when you observe and pray the Rosary while walking the streets of San Francisco, as we are doing this week. Jesus said to St. Faustina Kowalska: “My child, all your sins have not wounded My Heart as painfully as your present lack of trust does — that after so many efforts of My love and mercy, you should still doubt My goodness.” Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Friends of the Rosary: Today, August 29th is the Memorial of the Passion of St. John the Baptist. The Church celebrated the nativity of St. John the Baptist on June 24, and today honors the martyrdom of Christ's precursor and forerunner. Besides our Lord and our Lady, John the Baptist is the only one whose birth and death are thus celebrated. Today's Gospel relates the circumstances of his execution. He had the courage to blame Herod to his face for the scandal of his illegal union with his sister-in-law Herodias, whose husband was still alive. The blessed John suffered imprisonment and martyrdom as a witness to our Redeemer. John shed his blood for the truth of Christ. Paul the apostle said: "You have been granted the privilege not only to believe in Christ but also to suffer for his sake." We pray today's Holy Rosary from San Francisco, California. Friends of the Rosary: Today, August 28, the Catholic Church honors St. Augustine, one of the most influential theologians in the history of the Catholic Church. Born in the town of Thagaste (now Souk-Ahras in modern Algeria), Augustine lived a dissolute life of sin up until his conversion — written in the autobiographical brilliant book of Confessions. He also wrote The City of God. His mother, Saint Monica's tears and intense prayers, along with the sermons of Saint Ambrose, the bishop and Doctor of the Church, inspired him to embrace the truth of Christ. On a visit to Hippo, Augustine was proclaimed priest and then Bishop against his will. He later accepted it as the will of God and spent the rest of his life as the pastor of this North African town. On August 28, 430, as Hippo was under siege by the Vandals, Augustine died, at the age of 76. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!St. Augustine, Pray for Us! Friends of the Rosary: Today, we celebrate memorial of St. Monica, which is superseded by the Sunday liturgy. St. Monica (333-387), the mother of St. Augustine, was a Christian, but her husband Patricius was a pagan. Monica's virtues and prayers, converted him, and he was baptized a year before his death. Monica's tears and prayers for his son son were incessant as well. She had the joy of witnessing St. Ambrose baptize Augustine in 387. St. Monica died in Ostia, near Rome, as she and her son gazed at the sea and discoursed about the joys of the blessed. Today is also the feast of the Seven Joys of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Franciscan Crown, celebrated on August 27 by most Franciscans, and on the 26th by the Conventuals. Friends of the Rosary: Arrogance and pride are our first sins. They led us to the original sin through the disobedience of Adam and Eve. In many ways, we continue in the same manner. Many behave like little gods, deciding what is right and wrong. Consider this week's reading (Matthew 20:1-16) where laborers hired by a landowner demanded to be paid more money than those who worked fewer hours. The landowner — the Creator of the universe — replied: ‘My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?' Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.” The ways of God are not our ways. His deeds are perfect and eternal. Questioning Him with our impoverished minds and sinful condition is absurd. We should surrender and ask Him to take care of everything! Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Friends of the Rosary: Today, August 24th, is the Feast of the apostle St. Bartholomew, also known as Nathaniel. He was a doctor in Jewish law and a seeker of the truth. As a close friend of St. Philip the Apostle, he had the opportunity to see Christ. He recognized the Savior immediately as the Son of God. On that initial meeting, Jesus uttered the glorious compliment: "Behold, an Israelite indeed in whom there is no guile!" After the Resurrection, St. Bartholomew was favored by becoming one of the few apostles who witnessed the appearance of the risen Lord on the sea of Galilee (John 21:2). After having received the gifts of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost, Bartholomew evangelized Asia Minor, northwestern India, and Greater Armenia. Here, while preaching to idolaters, he was arrested and martyred. The Armenians honor him as the apostle of their nation and they proudly claim they were the first Christian State. Friends of the Rosary: Eight days after celebrating Mary's Assumption into Heaven, we commemorate the Memorial of the Queenship of Mary. This feast is a prolongation of the celebration of the Assumption. Down through centuries, Popes, Doctors, and Fathers of the Church have given authoritative expression to the truth of the Queenship of the Holy Virgin. This title is applied to the Mother of God since she is closely associated with the redemptive work of her Son — "The King of kings and Lord of lords" — and the Mediatrix of all graces. In October 1954, Pius XII, by his encyclical letter of October 11, 1954, following a unanimous desire of the faithful, instituted the Memorial of the Queenship of Mary. The same union of Mary with Christ Jesus is the fountain of the efficacy of her motherly intercession in the presence of the Son and of the Father. Pius IX wrote in his Apostolic Constitution Ineflabilis Deus: "More than all the angels and all the saints has God ineffable freely endowed Mary with the fullness of the heavenly gifts that abound in the divine treasury; and she, preserving herself ever immaculately clean from the slightest taint of sin, attained a fullness of innocence and holiness so great as to be unthinkable apart from God Himself, a fullness that no one other than God will ever possess." Friends of the Rosary: Following yesterday's story of the pagan Canaanite woman (Mt 15:21-28), who was granted the cure for her daughter because of her deep faith, we continue reflecting on the mystery and power of prayer. Very often our specific requests to God are not for our good. In that case, the eternal God might not grant what would result in our disadvantage. However, if our prayer is sincere and persevering, we shall always receive an answer — one that is better than what we asked for. We shouldn't doubt God's mercy. Who are we to question God's mercy? The earthly death of our loved one ended up bringing out virtues in us that they would otherwise never have had the occasion to practice. We cultivate these virtues for eternal life. Friends of the Rosary: In today's Sunday reading (Mt 15:21-28), we see the Canaanite woman as a model of deep-seated faith and trust in Christ's power and goodness. The Canaanite woman sees God in Jesus Christ (“Lord, Son of David') and asks for a miracle. She opens herself to Him, insists on the Lordship of Jesus, and her daughter is healed from that hour. “O woman, great is your faith. Let it be done for you as you wish,” Jesus said to her. Prayer is adoration, thanksgiving, and petition. It is necessary to persevere in our prayers of petition before Christ grants our requests. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Friends of the Rosary: On August 19th, 1917, the Virgen Mary appeared at Valinhos, distant about half a mile from the Village of Aljustrel and from the Cova de Iria, in Fatima. That was the fourth apparition. On August 13th, the three shepherds were arrested by the Administrator of Ourém, the district in which Fátima was located. This Administrator or Mayor, Artur Santos, was an apostate Catholic and high Mason. The Blessed Mother asked Jacinta, Francisco, and Lucia to return to the Cova da Iria on the 13th and to continue praying the Rosary every day. She promised that in the last month, in October, she would perform a huge miracle. And then looking very sad, she concluded: "Pray, pray very much, and make sacrifices for sinners; for many souls go to Hell because there is no one to sacrifice themselves and to pray for them". Friends of the Rosary: With faith, nothing is impossible. Our problem lies in our lack of faith. Christ Jesus conveyed this message to His disciples when they struggled to expel a demon from a possessed boy, as recounted in today's Gospel of Matthew (Mt 17:14-20). He stated: "Amen, I say to you if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." Jesus urges us through His disciples to exercise our faith. St. Paul reminds us that "we walk by faith, not by sight." We observe the world around us through conventional categories—political, cultural, and economic. We might be driven by instinct. However, by nurturing our faith daily, we can reach a point where the beauty of the Spirit predominates in our lives because the Divine will grant us the grace to perceive it. Instinct and sensory perceptions will unravel, and we will comprehend that we are wired for God. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Friends of the Rosary: Let's reflect for a second even from a contemporary perspective what Saint Lawrence presented as the “treasures of the Church” to Emperor Valerian when he was summoned before the executioners. He showed up with a handful of crippled, poor, and sick men, and when questioned, replied that ‘These are the true wealth of the Church.' (He was immediately sent to his death, being cooked alive on a gridiron.) Christ came to cure the sick — physically and spiritually ill people — and those trapped in sin. In all cases, every one of us is well represented by the sick, the needy, and the marginalized, just like St. Lawrence said. It's critical to separate sin from sinners, be doctrinally pure, and not fall into the traps of darkness. Sadly, some prelates are becoming confused by our contemporary society's attempt to erase the distinction between sin and sinners, not being able to avoid infiltration into the universal church. Friends of the Rosary: Today, the Universal Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (1891-1942), also known as St. Edith Stein. She was born of Jewish parents in 1891 in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland), becoming an influential and brilliant philosopher following her extensive studies at major German universities. Edith Stein was captivated by reading the autobiography of Teresa of Avila. She would imitate Teresa by becoming a Discalced Carmelite, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. After her conversion to Catholicism, she became a major force in German intellectual life. She was arrested by the Nazi regime in 1942 when she was living in a Carmelite monastery in Echt, Netherlands. Along with all Catholics of Jewish extraction, she was transported by cattle train to the death camp of Auschwitz. Teresa Benedicta and her sister Rosa, also a Catholic, died in a gas chamber in Auschwitz on August 9, 1942. Pope John Paul II beatified Teresa Benedicta in 1987 and canonized her in 1998. In the month of August, we celebrate two martyrs of Auschwitz, St. Maximilian Kolbe, and St. Teresa Benedicta. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, Pray for Us! Friends of the Rosary: Today, we celebrate the Memorial Day of St. Dominic of Guzman (1170-1221), who received the Holy Rosary from the Virgin Mary as a means to combat the destructive heresy of the Albigensian in the twelve century. He crushed the heresy and led many souls to piety and to religious life. The Spaniard priest St. Dominic also founded the Order of Preachers —the Dominicans — in the year 1215. At that time, it was an innovative order since instead of manual labor, as practiced by the Cistercian monks, he required his friars to work with their minds by preaching and teaching. Alongside the Franciscans, the Dominicans became the most powerful Order in medieval times, giving the Church illustrious preachers — St. Vincent Ferrer, Sts. Thomas of Aquinas and Pius V, among others— and contributed immeasurably to maintaining the purity of the faith. St. Dominic, to whom popes and saints have consistently attributed the origin and spread of the holy rosary, had a saint mother, Juana de Aza. During pregnancy, Dominic's mother dreamed she was carrying in her womb a little dog that held a burning torch between its teeth; and when she had given birth, it set the whole world on fire. St Dominic died at Bologna on August 6, 1221. He was canonized three years later by Pope Gregory IX. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Friends of the Rosary: The Transfiguration of the Lord — that we celebrated yesterday — is one of the proofs of the divinity of Jesus Christ. This event also shows us what we can be as a reflection of His love: saints. We will all be transformed into the light of Christ for eternity. As the Transfiguration points forward to the sufferings Jesus is about to experience, it is meant to strengthen our faith for the challenges we will endure temporarily in life. It's a momentary glimpse of heaven to sustain us as we face the challenges of this life. Let's reflect upon how the divine hand is at work to strengthen us on the road that will bring us into the infinite and endless joy of heaven. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Friends of the Rosary: Today, August 6th is the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. This commemoration anticipates the glory of heaven, where we shall see God face to face. Three witnesses chosen by Jesus — Peter, James, and John — saw in Mount Thabor in Israel that our Lord's face and clothes become dazzling with light, and Moses and Elijah appear. Moses and Elijah represent the two principal components of the Old Testament: the Law and the Prophets. Moses was the giver of the Law, and Elijah was considered the greatest of the prophets. A cloud covered Him and a voice from heaven said: "This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to Him!" On the mountain, the three core disciples saw the glory of God's Kingdom shining out of Jesus. They also learn that Jesus himself is the complete Word of God. The Catechism explains that Christ's Transfiguration aims at strengthening the apostles' faith in anticipation of his Passion: the ascent onto the 'high mountain' prepares for the ascent to Calvary. Friends of the Rosary: We celebrate today the memorial day of Our Lady of Snow (la Virgen Blanca, in Spanish), a feast related to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, one of the illustrious churches in Rome. This feast commemorates the miracle of the snowfall that occurred during the night of August 4-5 in the year 358 on the site where the basilica now stands. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared in a dream to two faithful Roman Christians, the patrician John and his wife, as well as to Pope Liberius (352-366), asking that a church be built in her honor on the site where snow would fall on the night of August 4-5. The basilica was completed about a century later by Pope Sixtus III (432-440), after the Council of Ephesus in 431 during which Mary was declared to be the Mother of God. Congratulations to all the women named Blanca o Maria Blanca (white, in Spanish). Also today we join in our prayer Pope Francis and all the participants in WYD in Fatima. Quoting St. John Paul II, Bishop Robert Barron, one of the key figures of the U.S. delegation, said to the pilgrims: “Jesus Christ is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega; he is the king of the new world; he is the secret of history; he is the key to our destiny. He is the mediator, the bridge, between heaven and earth. He is more perfectly than anyone else the Son of Man because he is the Son of God, eternal and infinite. He is the son of Mary, blessed among all women, his mother according to the flesh, and our mother through the sharing in the Spirit of his mystical body.” "It is his name that we proclaim to the ends of the earth and throughout all ages." Friends of the Rosary: As the effects of secularization on belief and practice are deepening, we continue praying along with the participants in the World Youth Day (WYD) in Lisbon, Portugal, this week Pope Francis urged a gathering of bishops, priests, deacons, consecrated persons, seminarians, and pastoral workers in Lisbon to stay in the boat with Jesus and revive their restless enthusiasm for spreading the Gospel. "This is not the time to stop and give up, to drag the boat to shore or to look back," said the Holy Father, acknowledging the discouragement that can be experienced by Catholic leaders in secularizing societies. The pope delivered an encouraging message in his homily for Wednesday vespers, or evening prayer, gathered in the church of Lisbon's iconic Mosterio dos Jerónimos. Pope Francis spoke on the importance of adoration, saying Catholics are lost without Jesus. "Priests, bishops, consecrated men and women, laypeople have to recover the prayer of adoration. It's to be in silence, before the Lord," Pope Francis urged. "Follow the example of St. Teresa of Calcutta, who, despite being involved in so many things in life, never gave up adoration even at times when her faith wavered and she wondered if it was all true or not." Friends of the Rosary: Today, we join in our prayer the hundreds of thousands of young people participating in World Youth Day (WYD) 2023 in Lisbon, Portugal, a faith event that began on August 1 and will last until this Sunday, August 6th. A high number of youngsters witness that true faith is still alive despite the decline in the practice of religion in our secularized world. The high turnout is a sign of hope. Pope Francis' prayer intention for the month of August is for World Youth Day (WYD). Pope Francis explained in a promotional video — see it on our rosarynetwork.com website — why he chose the theme "Mary arose and went with haste" for this WYD. "Because as soon as Mary knew she was going to be the mother of God, she didn't stay there taking a selfie or showing off. The first thing she did was to set out on a journey, in haste, to serve, to help. You too have to learn from her to set out on a journey to help others," he explained in the video. Pope Francis shared that he hopes to see "a seed for the world's future" in Lisbon. "A world where love is at the center, where we can sense that we are sisters and brothers. We are at war; we need something else. A world that is not afraid of witnessing the Gospel. A joyful world — because if we Christians have no joy, we are not credible, no one will believe us." The video concludes with a prayer: "Let us pray that the World Youth Day in Lisbon will help us young people to set out on the journey, witnessing the Gospel with our own lives."
