President Obama recently posted an open letter to librarians, praising them for their work amid book bans and other forms of censorship. Nick Higgins, chief librarian of the Brooklyn Public Library, talks about work BPL is doing to fight back against book challenges and expand access well beyond New York City.
God is expanding the mission and vision of Able Shepherd. What started out as Duty To Act ten years ago, God has turned into a movement. A family and community that expands from the west coast to the east coast. In part two of this episode we look at two Able Shepherd's, men who have felt a burden and calling to take the community Jimmy has built and start to build their own in Montana and Maine. How can we continue to expand what Able Shepherd is doing and equip more communities?
Nick Higgins, Able Shepherd #075, and Jason Campbell, Able Shepherd #086 share how God is positioning them in their own communities to use the capabilities and skills acquired through their training with Able Shepherd. Nick and Jason both heard about Able Shepherd through the Mike Seeklander Podcast and knew that they needed to be a part of this community. Jimmy also shares the convictions that God has been putting on his heart to move from a CHRIST-CENTERED company to a CHRIST-FIRST company.

Modern politics has often sought to create coalitions through shared objects of fear and anger. Yet, we know that a political community cannot survive with these emotions turned up to 11. Having set the background beginning with concepts from Aristotle in Session 1, in this episode Dr. Higgins answers what role that forgiveness and repentance have in the political order when friendship seems so distant, and whether our Biblical understanding can serve as a model for our political relationship.
Modern politics has often sought to create coalitions through shared objects of fear and anger. Yet, we know that a political community can not survive with these emotions turned up to 11. How can the ancient concept of friendship, particularly expressed in Aristotle provide a better understanding of political relationships, and how can it bring about the goal of a limited power in the political order?

I'm back this week with another guest episode - this time featuring Nick Higgins from The Firehouse Tribune! We dig into his new book - The 5-Tool Firefighter - and have some amazing conversation. "It has long been said that firefighters are truly a special breed of athletes. In fact, firefighting and sports go hand in hand. Instead of training for world championships or gold medals, firefighters are training each and every day to protect life and property all around the world. So, what separates good firefighters from exceptional well-rounded firefighters? Simply five key attributes obtained and implemented through Nick's time in the fire service and as an athlete." So, what are the attributes that make a 5-Tool Firefighter? Join us as we go all in. You won't want to miss this one. Nick and I end the episode with another segment of "Family Firefighter Survival". Each guest episode, we will dig into how the job works & intertwines with family life, what they wish they would have done differently, what they have learned along the way, and how they make the best of it with their family today. As always, I don't claim to be an expert. I just love to talk fire. All I want is to give the inspiration to anyone listening to take the steps to bettering their volunteer fire department however they can. Have a topic or question you want me to cover? If you do not value libraries then you do not value information or culture or wisdom. You are silencing the voices of the past and you are damaging the future. -Neil Gaiman When most of us think of the public library we think of musty smells, old librarians judging us over their readers reminding us that we are breaking the cardinal rule of the library by whispering to one another. But what would happen if we thought of libraries in the context of what they actually do? This week, Amanda speaks with Brooklyn Public Library's Chief Librarian, Nick Higgins, Library Journal named ‘Mover and Shaker'. Amanda and Nick talk about the history of libraries, and why access to information continues to be a threat to those in power. Nick explains why the Dewey Decimal System is problematic and Amanda instigates an unintentional pop quiz of the five library laws of science. Nick explains the correlation between literacy, poverty, intentional underfunding, and what an ideal outreach program looks like. Serving over half a million card holders, BPL strives to be an institution that responds to the needs of the public it serves; a democratic space where everyone is welcome regardless of age, gender or ethnic group. It turns out, the library is much more of a political powerhouse than it gets credit for, and Amanda is ready to get libraries on the next presidential ballot.
