Heralded as one of the most enduring and salient novels in American history, “The Things They Carried”, written by Tim O'Brien, is a fictionalized account of O'Brien's very real time as an infantry soldier in the Vietnam War. While, at its core, it is a Vietnam War novel, “The Things They Carried” explores the futility of all war, the power of friendship, and the motivating effects of morality, isolation, shame, and survival. This episode of the Velshi Banned Book Club will feature just one book, “The Things They Carried”, and explore its massive contribution to American literature.

My guest today, the first of the new year, is Nico Walker, author of the novel, Cherry. The book is a fictionalized account of an unnamed character who follows a path very similar to Walker's own life story. He joins the army at 19, serves in Iraq as a medic, spirals into heroin addiction as he deals with crippling PTSD, and finally sets off on a spree of bank robberies. This interview actually came about because Nico reached out to me a few weeks ago following the publication of my investigation into Tony Viola's wrongful prosecution. Walker was Viola's cellmate a decade ago, and the two have kept in touch over the years. On today's show, Walker and I discuss Iraq, the spirals of addiction, the futility of the drug war, and the frustrating tragedy of Viola's case. +++ SUPPORT +++ Likes, Shares, and Subscribes are free, and they help with the Algorithm gods! Talusan reads from her memoir Fairest, and talks about representation in literature, the intersections of their identity as an Asian and transgender woman, and why transphobia is a recurring theme in conversations about problematic faves. Then, Gallagher shares his take on “cancelling” problematic authors, and discusses his recent Intercept article about the new film Cherry, which is adapted from Nico Walker's autobiographical novel. In the piece, Gallagher parses ethical storytelling and how the American romanticization of crime can depend on the perpetrator's identity. He also reads from his most recent novel, Empire City. The two have had an interesting career, getting their start in the late '90s when their short was noticed by Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney, who helped them get their first feature Welcome to Collinwood off the ground. After a stumbling block and a comedy that nobody remembers called You, Me & Dupree, the two of them effectively got off to revolutionizing TV with shows like Arrested Development and Community before their Marvel track began. With their first feature effort post Endgame, the two decided to go in a very personal direction by adapting Nico Walker's book about life post the military that was riddled with heroin addiction. Tom Holland and Ciara Bravo star as a couple who find themselves going through the pitfalls of late adolescence and transitioning into early adulthood, and tackles an area and a class of people that the country has largely forgotten about. Dom and Chris tackle all these and more, including whether the Russos first effort post Endgame really demonstrated their talents effectively, as well as whether some of the more heart-wrenching parts of the movie made up for some of the more problematic elements. In a post-Endgame world, it's no surprise that brothers Joe and Anthony Russo are taking a step back from multi-billion-dollar superhero tentpoles into slightly smaller, grittier territory. Their latest, Cherry, based on the semiautobiographical novel by Nico Walker, certainly achieves that, though with no small amount of style.   As the latest component of Tom Holland's post-Spidey career pivot to a Serious Adult Actor, Cherry casts him in the titular role of Cherry, a cynical Army vet who comes home from the hells of the Iraq war to succumb to opioid addiction (along with his waifish wife Emily, played by Ciara Bravo), turning to bank-robbing to fund their habit. Along the way, the Russos treat us to a jaundiced, blackly-comic version of Cherry's worldview, from his idiot friends to the myopic military leaders and soldiers he meets in his time in the service. And at the core of it all is Holland, leveraging some of that quirky Peter Parker energy to  the role of a manic kid with nothing to lose.   Undergirding the Russos' jaundiced style here, hitting somewhere  between Stanley Kubrick and Harmony Korine, is the off-kilter, experimental score courtesy of Henry Jackman. He's spent the last decade or so scoring one blockbuster after another, an acolyte of Hans Zimmer's school who's scored everything from X-Men First Class to Captain Americas 2 and 3, where he first worked with the Russos. Cherry gives him the chance to try out a bunch of new, weird toys, including some whose provenance is unknown even to him, as you'll hear. The results are fascinatingly disorienting and tongue-in-cheek, which perfectly fits the overwhelming disconnect of Cherry's worldview.   I sat down with Jackman to talk about working with the Russos as they transition out of superhero work, and the vast array of musical techniques and instruments he employed in his freewheeling experimentations with Cherry's score.

Tyler Scruggs returns for a talk about the movie adaptation of Nico Walker’s novel Cherry, which follows a young man’s nightmarish evolution from lovestruck college student to opiate-addicted Iraq War veteran and serial bank robber. With Spiderman’s Tom Holland in the central role, and Marvel dudes (the Russo brothers) directing, the film has a jarringly different tone and effect than the book, and Tyler helps us frame Cherry’s function as both pop political cinema and a glossy advertisement for Apple’s streaming service. Of course, all of this evolves into a conversation about making and consuming art in the ephemeral landscape of hyper-capitalist digital pop culture. RUST BELT FEMME by Raechel Anne Jolie is a beautifully written memoir that addresses working class poverty in Northeast Ohio, identity, the saving grace of music, and the universality of the human condition. With shades of Sarah Smarsh, Michelle Tea, and Nico Walker, it has been called a compulsive read – something about the way Jolie writes just keeps you intrigued, and before you know it, you've read the whole thing in one siting! “I am offering this story of a queer Midwestern life to you in these pieces and parts, like spirits who materialize in the shadows when they are feeling restless and forgotten There is no way to make entirely coherent a life that is more assemblage than intersections, an existence that weaves in and out of time and space. But I think you'll be able to follow along, because whether our neurology is burdened by trauma or not, I think most of us who are drawn to memoir are burdened with an incurable case of nostalgia.” —from Rust Belt Femme by Raechel Anne Jolie With co-host Brody Levesque

HARLEM-SYDNEY — Yo so I fucked with this book heavy. Obviously initially for the hype surrounding its backstory—homie Nico going to war, getting fucked up, getting hooked on opioids, robbing banks, getting caught, going to jail, still in jail now! (till 2020 i think) But the thing is it's written mad well too, on some Denis Johnson voice-driven type shit. Not to mention how in he goes, merking himself for all the wild shit he did. Not to mention how well it captures the petty drug trade in a bleak midwestern spot like outer Cleveland, where it's set. Just fire, all around, this one. Shouts out Gian from Tyrant Books and all the other editors who brought this thing to the world. Tren W. aka Based Mountain is a writer and poet and editor living in Sydney.
