A leading expert in AI is urging lawmakers to rapidly pass new legislation to regulate Agentic AI, a ground-breaking new form of AI capable of completing complex goal-oriented tasks without the need of a human prompt. President of the European Responsible AI Office (EURAIO) Nell Watson made the call today during her keynote speech at Learnovation 2024, the annual summit on the future of work and learning, which took place at the Aviva Stadium. Alongside her role as head of the EURAIO, Nell is an executive consultant for Apple and a senior scientific advisor to The Future Society, an independent non-profit focused on developing and implementing governance mechanisms for AI. She has also been a senior fellow to The Atlantic Council, a US think tank. The theme of Learnovation 2024 is 'Navigating the Future of Learning', with speakers and workshops focused on preparing learners for the challenges of the 21st century and the future of work. Learnovation is the annual summit organised by The Learnovate Centre, a leading global future of work and learning research hub funded by Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland and based at Trinity College Dublin. Nell told Learnovation 2024 this morning that autonomous Agentic AI represents a significant upgrade on traditional AI and generative AI models which require human prompts. In response, industry must prepare workers for the introduction of the technology with new workplace training and upskilling programmes that teach innovative and independent thinking. She also told the conference that, while applications of Agentic AI will have positive effects for many, especially those with disabilities, lawmakers and officials must still move quickly to pass new laws and regulations to defend workers' rights from bad corporate actors. They must also, she says, legislate to ensure developers impose limits on the AI itself so that it does not breach the law while working to achieve its goals. President of the European Responsible AI Office Nell Watson says: "Agentic AI promises to dramatically change the world of work and learning. It's vital that we start preparing people for that change through education, training and upskilling, and new laws and regulations to ensure that the rights of people are not sacrificed in the pursuit of corporate profit. "This technology has vast potential. Applications in virtual reality will allow people to learn new skills in low-stakes virtual environments. It will make learning more inclusive with applications for people with reduced hearing or sight loss, or those with speech issues. Applying Agentic AI to learning will have life-changing effects for many people. However, it remains hugely important that officials take action now to regulate this technology and protect workers' rights before Agentic AI becomes ubiquitous, rather than spend valuable time playing catch-up later." Director of The Learnovate Centre, Nessa McEniff, said: "Learnovation 2024 is looking at some extremely interesting and topical issues including how to recognise and remove barriers for innovation in learning and how to embed AI in education in ways that are both effective and responsible. We will also explore AI's role in learning technology and focus on corporate learning in the 21st Century and how to prepare for the challenges of the future workplace." The event's host is Dr. Mary Kelly, Academic Dean at Hibernia College, who also gave the opening address. Other speakers at Learnovation 2024 include: Richard Culatta, CEO at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and the Association for Supervision of Curriculum Development (ASCD), non-profit global education organisations based in Washington that are focused on accelerating innovation in education and elevating learning to meet the needs of all students. We have the wonderful Nigel Paine back in the house for an exciting and banter-filled episode about leadership. It's a continuation of the previous Nigel show, The "Follow the Leader" Episode. Nigel and Matt continue the conversation about the nuance of leadership-- what the heck is it practically as organizations struggle to get their arms around it. A bulk of the discussion centers on the work of the wonderful historian and leadership expert, Keith Grint from the Säid Business School of the University of Oxford and also the University of Warwick, both in the UK. Truth in Learning: in Search of Something! Anything!! Anybody?
In this episode, podcast host, Matt Richter is joined by Nigel Paine, organizational learning and leadership expert. Together, they spend the whole episode exploring that nebulous and vague concept of leadership. They fail to definitively lock in a definition for leadership— thus demonstrating one of the inherent challenges organizations face when leveraging LD programs. But, more importantly, they look at what we can do, when we effectively develop leaders within organizational contexts. Leaders are all about managing… managing the context. No one style, approach, model, theory, or consultant prescription will work in all scenarios… of at all. So, what is one to do? Focus on flexibly adapting and managing that aforementioned context. Recognize that that there are so many different perspectives— the leaders, the followers, other players, etc. And then find ways to accept and leverage those different perspectives. In other words, leadership is utterly founded on adaptation and change. It is about systems thinking. To paraphrase Keith Grint, leadership is all about working to solve those wicked problems we face.Nigel answers the question about how we can predict or forecast whether someone will be a good leader. Which then leads to a discussion of how we conceive of leadership in our culture and how we describe leadership success.Below are some references and notes from the show:We referenced both Barbara Kellerman and Jeffrey Pfeffer:Kellerman, B. (2012). The End of Leadership. New York: Harper Collins. Kellerman, B. (2015). Hard Times: Leadership in America. Stanford, CA: Stanford University Press. Pfeffer, J. (2015). In response to the COVID pandemic, remote working became the norm for organisations to continue operating. As restrictions eased and employees both proved that remote working was viable and preferable, Hybrid Working emerged as a term to describe the mainstream adoption of this flexible approach to working from home and commuting, when required. However, in line with a new way of working emerged a new approach to learning. Or did it? In this episode, David, and Nigel Paine, who has 25 years of L&D experience and teaches on a doctoral programme at an Ivy League University, discuss this. KEY TAKEAWAYS Hybrid learning is a bit of a cliché, which is great for marketing, but is not for customers. We need to ask if remote/hybrid learning is the optimum solution for all hybrid workers, rather than assume that is the case. The L&D industry is prone to following fads and to re-badging old products. Doing fieldwork is essential if you want to understand what will work and avoid being tempted to follow a fad that does not do the job. When gathering data, ask lots of why questions to gain a deeper understanding of the issues. Don't be afraid to discuss things that don't necessarily fall under the learning remit as a way of improving your understanding. Few of the influential L&D software vendors have worked in the industry, so their tools and services often miss the mark. See yourself as a practitioner, bring your experience to bear and act together with your stakeholders to solve their problems. BEST MOMENTS 'I see so many terms that just come and go …. and hybrid learning is one of those' 'The last thing I would ever do to anyone in an organisation is to tell them what they need. I would help them to work that out for themselves.' 'Go in there with a partnership approach and ask the right questions. 'I would like to see more L&D people who are in control of their practice…not just working out what software to use.
