We can't believe it. Can you believe it? We actually finished reading Finnegans Wake. What started out as a podcast to read an "unreadable book" has turned into a journey that has endeared us to a magical community, connected with our family and friends, and reawakened our sense of what art can be. While sometimes it felt like climbing a sheer cliff-face, the toeholds we gained along the way made this a delightfully fulfilling project. For this final episode, Toby and TJ look back on WAKE and consider how you know when a project is over, embracing confusion, and how much we appreciate the spectators at the end of a marathon. We talk Joyce on film, Pinter, the Beatles, Lord of the Rings, and hypertexts, and pinpoint the exact moment the Harry Potter franchise lost TJ. We take on translation, and gimmicks, and mountaineering, and the question of how-fast-is-too-fast-to-read-the-Wake. Then, as we consider the stadium-sized Rubik's Cube that is the Wake, we are visited by the Patron Saint of WAKE for words of congratulations. It's an unmissable end to what has indeed proven to be a surprisingly listenable podcast. This week's chatters: Toby Malone, TJ YoungProgress: 628 pages complete, 0 pages to go; 100% read.Contextual NotesThe Patron Saint of WAKEMichael Ian Black congratulates WAKE! First up, we're diving into next week's Democratic National Convention, where President Biden will endorse Kamala Harris as the next Commander-in-Chief. Rahm Emanuel, Biden's ambassador to Japan, joins Christiane to discuss the successes of Biden's diplomacy and what a Harris foreign policy might look like. Then, we'll explore what a second Trump term could mean for American diplomacy abroad. Former Pentagon official Elbridge Colby shares why he believes the Trump-Vance agenda could help the U.S. avoid World War Three and why it's imperative to have Europe take the lead in supporting Ukraine. Next, Anna Ardin, the Swedish woman who accused Julian Assange of sexual assault discusses Wikileaks legacy, and recounts her trauma, and how her life has changed since the assault in her new book, ‘No Heroes, No Monsters.' We also hear from Darren Walker, President of the Ford Foundation, as he reflects on his transformative work in philanthropy and how his personal life story has shaped the foundation's mission to fight inequality. Marking three years since the Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan, Christian revisits the severe rollback of women's rights with a focus on the restrictions faced by women anchors, who are now banned from showing their face on camera. Finally, Christiane speaks with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado about the recent crackdown by Nicolás Maduro on dissidents following a contested election, as she shares her story from a secret location. DoA and MonteCristo review the first five episodes of the new AppleTV+ show set in the MonsterVerse, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Starring Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt, who plays the younger version of Kurt, and set in both the modern day and in 1950's flashbacks, the show ultimately disappoints. Perplexingly, the show contains surprisingly few actual monsters and spends an exorbitant amount of time on the psychological woes of its boring characters. Furthermore, Monarch fails to even explain any of the mysteries surrounding its titular organization, leaving viewers bored and with few answers gleaned from five hours of watching this show.
This week is a special roundtable episode. An exciting, challenging and very very thought-provoking tour of contemporary Black horror, in the company of three writers at the bleeding edge. Nnedi Okorafor, Maurice Broaddus and Lesley Nneka Arimah are just three of the contributors to Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror. It's curated by Jordan Peele, who knows a thing or two about that particular landscape, and these three authors present a fantastic cross-section of how versatile Black horror is right now. We talk about their stories, about the anthology as a whole and the broader topic of Black horror. What does that even mean? What is the role of history? Of trauma? And of the future? At times, these guests turn the interview around on me, asking me to reflect on my own presumptions and the baggage I bring to these stories. Like I said, challenging and exciting. Hope you enjoy it. This episode we take a look at the second installment of the new franchise we started with our guest. This is one of the few sequels that an argument can be made that it is better than the original, though one of us disagreed with that statement. This film moves a bit away from the horror aspect and ramps up the action.

In this episode of Postcards, I welcome Cadwell Turnbull. author of the science fiction novel The Lesson. His short fiction has appeared in The Verge, Lightspeed, Nightmare, and Asimov's Science Fiction. The short story “Loneliness is in Your Blood” was selected for The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2018, and the story "Jump" was selected for the Year's Best Science Fiction and Fantasy 2019. The Lesson was the recipient of the 2020 Neukom Institute Literary Award in the debut category. In this episode, we are focusing on his second novel No Gods No Monsters that I jokingly called an Anarchist werewolf novel. The first in a series this novel is fantasy, science fiction, and activist themed with multiple layers No Gods No Masters is a delightfully powerful and unique piece of work. I would recommend it for all fans of modern dark fantasy but for the ones that enjoy deeper political reading, it is a MUST READ. In this conversation we talk about Cadwell's origin story, the differences between writing the first book and this one, the influence of Leguin and activism in Pittsburgh where he went to college and writing an anarchist themed monster novel about discrimination and the changing world. My guest is Cadwell Turnbull, author of the novel NO GODS, NO MONSTERS. In Turnbull's second, science fiction/fantasy novel, we learn that many of the creatures of myth and legend are real, and are now coming out of the shadows. Set in current times, Turnbull reimagines these creatures as oppressed and scared, but marching and protesting for equal rights seeking safety through visibility. With the story told largely from the viewpoint of the monsters, he humanizes the creatures, and they serve as a metaphor for oppressed groups in today's world.Cadwell Turnbull is also the author of novel THE LESSON, which won the 2020 Neukom Institute Literary Award in the debut category.

Cadwell Turnbull appeared on New Books in Science Fiction two years ago to discuss his debut novel, The Lesson, about an alien invasion and colonization of Earth, centered around Turnbull's native U.S. Virgin Islands. He returns to talk about his second book, No Gods, No Monsters (Blackstone, 2021), which, rather than aliens from another planet, features monsters who live among us as our friends, neighbors and even relatives. While ostensibly about the fantastical, the novel is grounded in reality with complex characters whose experiences touch on difficult but important issues like police violence, othering, and even fake news. While the two books have different characters and storylines, Turnbull calls them “sister books.” Aliens and monsters “are both versions of human fears manifested through these speculative elements,” Turnbull says. “One is dealing with a threat from without, and one is dealing with a threat from within. And they both have similar thematic concerns.” Among the topics Turnbull discusses in the interview are the human propensity to deny uncomfortable truths; the challenge of those with different beliefs accepting the same version of reality (even when reality is captured on video); how monsters can provide a window on intersectional marginalization; and how writing can be like solving a puzzle.
