We had the pleasure of interviewing Mark Wilkinson over Zoom video!Australian troubadour Mark Wilkinson shares his nuanced and heartfelt new EP Golden Afternoons. Mark centers around the theme of duality and accepting your own weaknesses and strengths in life. Mark reminds himself to “Embrace the Ride,” to let go and feel alive in each moment. Produced in Nashville alongside Owen Lewis (Paris Paloma, Old Sea Brigade, Snow Patrol), the seven-song effort sees the impassioned songwriter reconcile with his insecurities while finding the confidence to take risks despite the fear of failure. The result is a dynamic release with pin-drop moments and grandiose heights.Mark explains, “The EP explores the fine line between light and dark as well as confidence and uncertainty, which are the two states I'm constantly between as an artist and songwriter. Each song touches on these themes as they float through this body of work. It's a reflection of the balancing act.”Mark is also proud to announce the Golden Afternoons 2024 Australian Tour kicking off on April 11th in Fortitude Valley, QLD. Find the full list of tour dates below and for more information visit: www.markwilkinson.com.ABOUT MARK WILKINSON:Life never follows a linear road. Rather, it often forks as we do our best to keep pace in the middle. Mark Wilkinson treads this path in his music. He acknowledges hardship and darkness, only to step into the embrace of the light. The Sydney-based singer and songwriter acutely details this journey through relatable storytelling and hummable songcraft. By considering and understanding life's extremes from the middle, he gets closer to himself on his new EP, Golden Afternoons. After building an international profile by bringing his music directly to the people as a popular busker, he has creatively leveled up with each successive release. He captivated audiences with the likes of Let The River Run [2013], Hand Picked, Vol. 2 [2015], Wasted Hours [2018], and Blue Eyed Girls [2019]. Along the way, he catapulted to #1 on the Australian Independent Charts and sold in excess of 80,000 units. Since the release of 2022's Mariposa EP, he's impressively racked up millions of streams on Spotify and garnered support from Americana Highways, The Bluegrass Situation, and The Wild Is Calling who said, “We see star power and mainstream potential in the spirit of Mumford and Sons, Mt. Joy, or the Lumineers.” Standout single “Grafton St” also found fans at SiriusXM Coffeehouse. This time around, he changed up the process. Mark decamped to Nashville, TN where he recorded what would become Golden Afternoons with producer Owen Lewis (Paris Paloma, Old Sea Brigade, Snow Patrol) in just two weeks.“It was my first time making a project in Nashville,” he reveals.“It was exciting to see the whole thing come together over a short period and work with some amazing musicians. It progresses from the previous EP—which was made in a space of the end of the Pandemic and not knowing anything about what was going to happen. This music comes out of that period with confidence, trying to trust yourself and looking forward to a brighter tomorrow.”We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing Old Sea Brigade over Zoom video! Life happens between all of the changes around us. We adapt to the ebbs and flows in our environment and ultimately grow in the middle of major milestones. Old Sea Brigade documents the space between those changes in his songs. Atlanta-born and Nashville-based singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Ben Cramer captures anxiety, nostalgia, confusion, love, loss, and, ultimately, hope in tender true-life snapshots colored by folk eloquence, Americana bliss, rock energy, and country heart. He welcomes everyone to flip through those snapshots on his 2021 second full-length offering, Motivational Speaking [Nettwerk]Like any timeless scrapbook, the album evolved as a living and breathing entity over the course of the past two years. Before that, Ben initially debuted Old Sea Brigade in 2015 with his self-titled independent debut EP. It yielded “Love Brought Weight,” which gathered over 41 million Spotify streams and counting. After the Cover My Own EP and Songs for the Holidays EP, he unveiled his 2019 full-length debut, Ode To A Friend. He garnered praise from Boston Globe, UPROXX, Glide, and No Depression and hit the road with Julian Baker, Joseph, Lewis Watson, and Luke Sital-Singh. He developed undeniable chemistry with Luke that carried over to the studio as they teamed up on the collaborative All the Ways You Sing in the Dark EP. With both musicians off the road due to the Global Pandemic, they chose to unveil the project in 2020, and it generated nearly 3 million streams in the span of a few months. In addition to acclaim from American Songwriter, Atwood Magazine claimed, “Old Sea Brigade and Luke Sital-Singh have struck gold on their soulfully soothing new EP.”Simultaneously, Ben had been working diligently on Motivational Speaking with his longtime production partner Owen Lewis [Banners, Maddie Medley] as well as various collaborators such as bassist Eli Beaird [James Bay, Shawn Mendes], drummers Will Sayles [Norah Jones, Drew Holcomb] and Julian Dorio [Eagles of Death Metal, The Whigs], guitarist Kris Donegan [Third Eye Blind, Kelsea Ballerini] and Glenn Duncan [Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings, Mark Knopfler] on dobro, banjo, and bouzouki. As the world shutdown, Ben took advantage of the downtime to perfect these twelve tracks. He initially teased the album earlier this year with “Caroline,” where delicate strumming and strings conjure a gorgeous daydream. He'll kick off 2021 with the single “Day By Day.” A kinetically steady beat from Julian Dorio [Eagles of Death Metal, The Whigs] courses underneath a nimble riff as his full-bodied delivery gallops towards a floating hook, “I think of you growing old and it breaks my heart.”Conceived as his first composition during the COVID-19 quarantine, “American Impressions” conjures up a “fantasy of living the ‘California Dream' with someone” over sunny acoustic strumming and ethereal overtones. Co-written with Sital-Sing over ZOOM, “Mirror Moon” offsets lush electric guitar with a chantable refrain.Lyrically, it's a reminder to myself, ‘Don't get too comfortable'. On the record, I speak on building roots. Some of these roots are tied to relationships, some are tied to places you live. ‘Mirror Moon' explores building roots and the effect change has on them. Metaphorically speaking, you look at the moon and expect it to be there. It's the same as when you're in a relationship and have people you can count on. What happens when that splits in two?”Strains of mellotron swell through “Salt,” which maintains the distinction of being “the first Old Sea Brigade song to feature banjo.” Meanwhile, “How It Works” relays the story of a snarky industry encounter with a gleeful grin.In the end, Motivational Speaking collates the kind of memories and feelings we all could use a little more of right now.We want to hear from you! In this episode, hosts Alan Sanders and Walt Murray chat with classically trained music composer, Douglas Helvering. We start with a look back and Doug's draw to music. He was first pulled in via a choir and became mesmerized with learning more about music and composition. As a PhD professor of music, Doug has spent most of his adult life analyzing and teaching others how to understand music theory. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, he was forced to reevaluate how to reach others while in lockdown. After awhile, he returned to his YouTube channel, commenting on news and thoughts of the day. In the fall of 2020, it was Doug's brother who suggested Doug try a reaction episode. Doug was not really ready for a clash of music genres, but his brother suggested giving an analysis of the Iron Maiden song, "Fear of the Dark." It was a huge hit with YouTube watchers. Within weeks, he gained thousands of subscribers. With a newfound purpose of teaching principles of music theory over top of metal and hard rock pieces, Doug has grown to over 70,000 followers at the time of this recording. Doug truly teaches us what is happening compositionally in the music and how it moves through chords, keys and even lyrics. In some ways, the watcher is getting the benefit of a classical education leveraged on elements of metal and rock. As the episode wraps up the interview, Alan pulls executive privilege and bypasses the normal review of a horrible movie. Instead, they all talk about some of their favorite war films in honor of Memorial Day. After the films, Alan and Walt each provide a pair of odd news items. Then they move into the Entertainment Segment. WATCHING Walt is watching the Robert Kirkman animated series, Invincible. He also re-watched the 70's film, The Towering Inferno. Finally, he just watched the classic 80s flick, War Games. Doug gave two thumbs up for, Mare of Easttown. He also recently watched Real Genius, Schitt's Creek, The Good Place and Hamiliton. Alan also finished Mare of Easttown and gives it a glowing review. Alan re-watched Togo with his Father-in-Law and that led to watching, Iron Will. Alan also gaves two thumbs up for Guns Akimbo starring Daniel Radcliffe. Finally, in honor of its release on May 25, 1977, Alan re-watched Star Wars with his wife and Father-in-Law. READING Walt is reading, "Gun Room, " by Warren Ellis. Alan, in preparation for an upcoming interview on The Marriage Fit Podcast, is reading, "The 4 Intimacy Styles." Doug is getting ready to read, "Zero Fail: The Rise and Fall of the Secret Service," by Carol Leonning. LISTENING Walt plugs the podcast, Radio Labyrinth and Small Town Murder. He also reminds everyone that Old Sea Brigade has a new album out. And, Walt just got tickets to see Dead and Company in Atlanta later this fall. Alan does a shout out to the 60MW Podcast, Measuring the Score podcast, The Daily Doug on YouTube and the new age group, 2002. Doug has been listening to Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers. He recently did an episode on Queen's, "The March of the Black Queen." He has also been listening to the music of Stargazer and Dio. As to radio, he likes to listen to Mike Smerkonish on SirusXM. In this episode, hosts Alan Sanders and Walt Murray sit down with Writer, Director and Actor, Amanda Raymond. After getting caught up on current events since the last episode, Alan and Walt welcome Amanda to the stage. She admits she wanted to be an actress since she was a little girl. As she got older, she also developed a love for animation and used that as a launching point for her career. She bounced back and forth with acting and PA work for a time. She finally started to focus on more of the behind-the-scenes work of production. This eventually led to her writing and directing a short. The short got the attention of others who wanted her to direct a feature, which ended up optioned to Netflix. During this, Amanda began her own production company called 13 Curves Productions. Amanda continues to hone her writing and directing craft, revealing her ultimate goal is to one day direct a Star Wars movie. Amanda Raymond joins in the remainder of the show, weighing in on a terrible movie Walt has to review. Alan and Walt then discuss a couple of outrageous news items before diving into the entertainment segment. WATCHING Walt is binging Jericho and is continuing to watch the Robert Kirkman cartoon, Invincible. Amanda has been watching You on Netflix. Alan finished all of season one of Invincible and watched Midnight Run after the passing of Charles Grodin. Alan never saw it before and liked it, though he felt the score was a little cheesy. READING Walt is reading, "Boundaries," by Dr. Cloud. He is learning how to set limits and reasonable expectations. Amanda just began a book about the Arch Bishop John Hughes, who is also known as Dagger John. She feels there might be a story there worth adapting to the screen. Old Sea Brigade is the work of Nashville-based, Georgia-born musician Ben Cramer, who makes atmospheric Nashville-informed indie folk, infused with 80s synthpop and jangly guitars. "Cramer’s feathery vocals dovetail nicely with the guitars’ indie-rock-in-the-aughts sound," and the melodies are enhanced with warm synths and hazy production (John Schaefer). Old Sea Brigade plays songs from his new album Motivational Speaking, remotely.

When the pandemic hit, Micah found himself in a unique position to get footage of abandoned streetscapes and landmarks. Posting those videos made his YouTube channel explode. He still loves shooting video and hopes to continue to keep it within the family. He plans to keep making aerial videos and post them online for his followers to see. After the interview, Walt dives into another review of a listener selected "bad" movie. This one may have made Walt hit rock-bottom! Then Alan and Walt exchange some crazy news stories from the week. Then they wrap up the show with their entertainment segments, diving into what they are watching, reading and listening to. WATCHING Walt went to see Godzilla v. Kong and thought the fight scenes were good. He found himself entertained. He also recommends WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Alan has been watching a couple of specific YouTube channels. He recommends The Daily Doug and The Charismatic Voice. He has also been watching season 2 of ST: TOS, Falcon and the Winter Soldier and mentioned the release of the Loki trailer. READING Walt is still reading, "Running with the Devil." In preparation for his other podcast, The Marriage Fit Podcast, Alan discussed the questionnaire entitled, "36 Questions that Lead to Love." LISTENING Walt did a pitch for Ben Cramer's latest release from his band, Old Sea Brigade. He is also listening to the podcast ABCD:TOS and Office Space Minute. Alan gave a plug for the History of the Marine Corps podcast. He has also continued listening to the band Nightwish and has been listening to a lot of Iron Maiden.

We welcome to the Listeners Lounge musician Ben Cramer of the band Old Sea Brigade. Ben has been drawn to music nearly his entire life and took time to chat with us about his career thus far. In the way-back machine, he and some friends created a Green Day cover band as young teenagers. His music abilities grew and led him to a tour with the rock band, Kansas. Upon his return from his touring with them and others, Ben decided to refocus his efforts and created Old Sea Brigade. The band name had been conceived many years before, but had not yet been used. Working out of Nashville, Ben has seen his career grow incrementally and steadily and he would not have it any other way. He has a new album releasing in August of 2020 and hopes to be able to get back into the live performance as soon as possible. Movies, television and streaming: Walt really liked The Old Guard on Netflix starring Charlize Theron. He also mentioned some classics from the 80's -- Commando, The Naked Gun and Spaceballs. He said Commando and Spaceballs have not aged well, but The Naked Gun is still as funny as ever. Walt wraps up with a reminder of the remake, Midway, which Ben also said was a great flick. Ben got pulled into the documentary, World War II in Color. He also finds himself going back to binge epsiodes of The Office. He just saw (and liked) Being John Malkovich. Additionally, he admits he had avoided horror movies in his past, so he made himself watch The Shining and Silence of the Lambs. Alan was back to supporting older movies being released in the movie theaters. His recommendation was for The Empire Strikes Back, which just hit it's 40th anniversary. Alan also relayed having seen the Altanta Symphony Orchestra play the score live to the film and suggests everyone should do that one day. Music: Ben is listening to the new Neil Young release of some older pieces called, "Homegrown." He has also been listening to a lot of The Grateful Dead. This led to a conversation with Ben and Walt about The Dead and Dead and Company. Alan went in a different direction and mentioned the New Age group 2002. He also discussed playing the entire Rush discography, one album a night, after the passing of Neil Peart in January of this year. Podcasts: Walt does NOT recommend "Tuesdays with Stories" but loves "TV Confidential." Ben likes "Off Camera with Sam Jones," "The Working Songwriter," "Atlanta Monster," "S-Town" and "Wind of Change," which is about the CIA writing the hit song for the Scorpians. Alan suggests catching up on the new studio look of, "The Golden Rage of TV" with prior guest, Pat McCormack. He also suggested, "The Hitchcock Minute," which just finished.
