(Editor's Note: Welcome to our Reissue series! For the next several weeks, Basic Folk is digging back into the archives and reposting some of our favorite episodes alongside new introductions commenting on what it's like to listen back. Enjoy!)Listening back, I feel like this 2018 interview with Anaïs Mitchell holds up. Originally published on January 10, 2019, 'Hadestown' was about to debut on Broadway, the pandemic was still over a year away, and we were young and full of autumn. Our Basic Folk interview includes a really interesting discussion about feminism (with just one squeamish reference to fourth-wave being about “non-binary” from yours truly. Eeek!). Anaïs talks about her childhood on a sheep farm in Vermont. She unpacks her love for and loyalty in her collaborations and the mystical way she found her visual artist (Peter Nevins) for 'Hadestown.'We also talk about 'Hadestown' receiving some “viral” attention in 2016, thanks to a Tr*mp campaign promise to build a wall on the southern border. People latched onto her 2006-penned song, “Why We Build the Wall,” which is one of the pinnacle tracks from her Tony Award-winning Broadway musical. Anaïs opens up about how she met her husband, Noah Hahn, and her early musical beginnings in Boston at Club Passim. This episode was recorded just as 'Hadestown' was set to open at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway in March 2019. This was also a year before her band, Bonny Light Horseman, would release their debut album. I'm proud of our conversation, which includes some chiming in from Anaïs' guitarist Austin Nevins, who was on tour with her at the time of the recording. We three are old friends and we were trying to record the interview and hang out at the same time. I'll leave it up to you to decide if we succeeded!Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? Growing up in a musical family gave JT an early start into sound and rhythmic exploration. He set on the path to becoming a working musician while playing in his father's big band as a teen. Over the years he remained steeped in the improvised music scene, both as a performer and presenter. As a session drummer JT has appeared on Grammy record of the year “Folklore” (Taylor Swift) as well as the follow up “Evermore”. Grammy nominated “s/t”(Bonny Light Horseman) as well as critically acclaimed records by Bon Iver, Big Red Machine, Cassandra Jenkins, The National, Maya Hawke, Ed Sheeran, and many others. In this episode, JT talks about: Getting opportunities to record for Taylor Swift and others through older, more localized relationships Going from deep in the jazz world to deep into electronic music Being. not just your own marketing department, but your own HR department Being a booker for a music venue in Minneapolis, and balancing modern metrics like social media following with old school legwork What insecurity causes us to do and not do How your identity as a drummer is cumulative, not compartmentalized
This is the 50th episode of this podcast! I'm joined by friend Eric D. Johnson (Fruit Bats, Bonny Light Horseman) to talk about handclaps. We talk about handclaps in the songwriting and recording process, play some of our favorite songs featuring handclaps, and also have a bunch of digressions about other stuff. Songs played in this episode (maybe not exactly in this order): The Shins - Kissing the Lipless (2003) Led Zeppelin - Bron-Y-Aur Stomp (1970) Fruit Bats - When U Love Somebody (2003) The Routers - Let's Go - Pony (1962) Rose Royce - Car Wash (1976) Boston - Foreplay / Long Time (1976) Erasmo Carlos - Mundo Deserto (1971) The Cure - Close to Me (1985) The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band - Eighteen Is over the Hill (1968) Air - La femme d'argent (1998) Alice Coltrane - Govinda Jai Jai (1977) The Meters - Hand Clapping Song (1970)
Multi-talented musician and producer Josh Kaufman is known for his work with Josh Ritter, The National, and his band Bonny Light Horseman. I've known Josh for many years, after meeting him in Pittsburgh while he was on tour with Dawn Landes. I felt instant friendship with him (and honestly with the entire Dawn Landes band that day). We haven't seen each other very much over the last 15 years, but since he left that impression on me I've always rooted for him in his career. In our Basic Folk conversation, Josh shares anecdotes from his childhood, including memories of his journalist mother interviewing legendary musicians and the backstage snacks that left a lasting impression. He reflects on his early musical influences, the role of music in his family, and how his parents supported his passion for music from a young age. Then we dive into Josh's experiences playing in bands in New York City during his high school years and how those formative experiences shaped his relationship with music and the city itself. As a producer, Josh discusses his approach to working with artists, emphasizing the importance of capturing the raw, live energy of a performance. He talks about his instrumental album, 'What Do the People in Your Head Say to Each Other,' and how embracing imperfection has become a central theme in his work. He also touches on his collaborations with notable musicians, including Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, and the impact of those experiences on his career. Josh Kaufman is the most sought out producer in roots music these days. Look out for him producing some great records in 2025 and beyond.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? Josh Kaufman is my guest on this episode That's How I Remember It. Josh is a massively talented musician and producer. He plays in the band Bonny Light Horseman and also has produced records for Bob Weir, Cassandra Jenkins, Anais Mitchell, The Hold Steady, and myself. Outside of my bandmates, no other person has made such an impact on my musical life. I'm honored to have Josh here to have this conversation, which was really great. Listen and subscribe!

Today we're going to be chatting with the band Bonny Light Horseman. That's right, all three of them! Over two and a soon-to-be-released third record, Bonny Light Horseman have crafted and created an immediately recognizable folk sound all of their own and picked up a Grammy nomination along the way. A bit of a supergroup comprising Eric D. Johnson, who you may know from Fruit Bats; Anais Mitchell, highly-acclaimed musician and writer of the wildly popular musical, Hadestown; and Josh Kaufman, a musician and producer you'll have heard on countless records, including ones by The War on Drugs, The National, His Golden Messenger, and a new artist who's starting to make a bit of a name for herself, Taylor Swift. Join us for the first Secretly Frequencies episode of Season 3, where we test artists and labels on their own catalogs and hear a few stories about the songs and history along the way.

Our guests today are folk rock trio Bonny Light Horseman, featuring Anaïs Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson, and Josh Kaufman. They recently released their stunning third studio album, a double album titled "Keep Me On Your Mind / See You Free”. This album, which was recorded in an old Irish pub, blends traditional folk music with a more experimental and raw sound. In today's episode, we talk to Eric, Anaïs, and Josh about the delicate and stunning songwriting that permeates this record. We discuss the most challenging song to record due to its heartbreaking lyrics and talk about taking this record out on tour, including whether Bonny Light Horseman might make their way to Australia.Bonny Light Horseman: Instagram / SpotifyPurchase 'Keep Me On Your Mind / See You Free' here. You can support the pod here: TSIY Insta / TSIY TikTok / TSIY Youtube Hosted on Acast. The circle is complete. I've had recent interviews with Anais Mitchell (together with Charlotte Cornfield) and with Eric D. Johnson, but now that we've added Josh Kaufman, this is a full-on Bonny Light Horseman episode. I enjoyed this conversation immensely because we dove into their collective process, not just their individual processes. And listening to them talk for even a few seconds makes one thing immediately clear: the songwriting is great because the chemistry among them is so powerful. Bonny Light Horseman's new double album Keep Me on Your Mind/See You Free is out now on Jagjaguwar Records.
Episode 576 also includes an E.W. Poetic Piece titled "Innocence." Surprise! Part 2 of Joe's interview on @thetourstories with Eric D Johnson is up with a big announcement. Bonny Light Horseman, the trio of Anaïs Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson, and Josh Kaufman, are set to release their new double album and Jagjaguwar debut Keep Me on Your Mind/See You Free on June 7th! Eric shares the origin of BLH, how he came to be a contributing member and why they use a “yes and” style in their voltronic writing process. He also tells us about how the record was made partially live in an Irish pub, how his bandmate Anaïs has changed his lyric stylings and why the new record might have a broader reach of listeners. Joe and Eric also discuss Eric's deep indie rock pedigree and his rich history of touring and recording from the early aughts to the present. The two reminisce about their tenure together in The Shins and how they both greatly benefitted from that experience. When someone named Spammy emails you, you have a choice: flag as a phishing threat, or read in entirety? Well, we do get a kick out of seeing the moniker appear in our mailbox, from a listener whose skewering takes leave us chuckling every time. While most emailers use the show email to send questions, Spammy mostly offers witty commentary with no indication of a need for help and gives off the sense that he's seen it all. But this week, we've got a real honest-to-goodness question from the man. We're assuming it's a man. So the guys take on a comment/question related to the Philips Hue light bulbs and bars that have been mentioned previously on the show, which leads to a longer discussion about switch-mode and other noise in the listening room. Tune in to today's episode of LaunchLeft, where Rain Phoenix is joined by MC Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger to launch Johanna Samuels. Rain and MC engage in conversations about the artistic process, exploring how the emotions and creativity of artists contribute to the final musical outcomes. They agree on the irreplaceable human element in music creation and songwriting, asserting that AI will never replicate this human touch. Johanna and MC recount their initial meeting, her new record, and the importance of a songwriters community. Listen to the end to hear Johanna's powerful song "Holy Mother." ----------------- LAUNCHLEFT OFFICIAL WEBSITEhttps://www.launchleft.com LAUNCHLEFT PATREON https://www.patreon.com/LaunchLeft TWITTER https://twitter.com/LaunchLeft INSTAGRAM https://www.instagram.com/launchleft/ FACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/LaunchLeft --------------------- LaunchLeft Podcast hosted by Rain Phoenix is an intentional space for Art and Activism where famed creatives launch new artists. [07:35] He discusses the passion and process of creating music. [10:27] MC Taylor talks about AI and its role in creativity. [14:00] MC Taylor shares how he and Johanna met, and they all discuss playing in smaller local venues in the LA area. [18:21] Johanna describes what her future schedule will be and discovers the “why” of what she is doing. [21:52] MC Taylor talks about his current state of happiness, how that has affected his recent writing, and how he’s feeling now. [33:15] Johanna describes her innermost feelings about music. [35:38] Listen to Johanna as she sings Holy Mother. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Artists are influenced by their emotions and world events. They want to be able to write from their heart and not by what they are directed to write. MC Taylor would rather create his music, which fluctuates financially, than secure jobs he hates. AI fails to enable the humanity of music creation due to the absence of emotion in the creative process. BIOGRAPHIES: HISS GOLDEN MESSENGER “I went looking for peace,” says songwriter M.C. Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger about his new album Quietly Blowing It, out June 25, 2021, on Merge Records. “It’s not exactly a record about the state of the world—or my world—in 2020, but more a retrospective of the past five years of my life, painted in sort of impressionistic hues. Maybe I had the presence of mind when I was writing Quietly Blowing It to know that this was the time to go as deep as I needed to in order to make a record like this. And I got the time required in order to do that.” He pauses and laughs ruefully. “I got way more time than I needed, actually.”Quietly Blowing It was written and arranged by Taylor in his home studio—his 8’ × 10’ sanctuary packed floor to ceiling with books, records, and old guitars—as he watched the chaotic world spin outside his window. “Writing became a daily routine,” he explains, “and that was a ballast for me. Having spent so much time on the road over the past ten years, where writing consistently with any kind of flow can be tricky, it felt refreshing. And being in my studio, which is both isolated from and totally connected to the life of my family, felt appropriate for these songs.” Between March and June, Taylor wrote and recorded upwards of two dozen songs—in most cases playing all of the instruments himself— before winnowing the collection down and bringing them to the Hiss band. In July, the musicians, with Taylor in the production seat, went into Overdub Lane in Durham, NC, for a week, where they recorded Quietly Blowing It as an organic unit honed to a fine edge from their years together on the road. “We all needed to be making that music together,” he recalls. “We’ve all spent so many years traveling all over the world, but in that moment, it felt cathartic to be recording those particular songs with each other in our own small hometown.”Throughout Quietly Blowing It, Taylor brings his keen eye to our “broken American moment”—as he first sang on Hiss Golden Messenger’s critically acclaimed, GRAMMY ® - nominated Terms of Surrender—in ways that feel devastatingly intimate and human. Beginning with the wanderer’s lament of “Way Back in the Way Back,” with its rallying cry of “Up with the mountains, down with the system,” Taylor carries the listener on a musical journey that continually returns to themes of growing up, loss, obligation, and labor with piercing clarity, and his musical influences—including classic Southern soul and gospel, renegade country, and spiritual jazz—have never felt more genuine. Indeed, Quietly Blowing It is a distillation of the rolling Hiss Golden Messenger groove, from the rollicking, Allman-esque “The Great Mystifier” to the chiming falsetto soul of “It Will If We Let It,” to the smoky, shuffling title track with its bittersweet guitar assist from Nashville legend Buddy Miller. The album ends with soulful lead single “Sanctuary,” a song about trying to reconcile tragedy and joy, with references to John Prine (“Handsome Johnny had to go, child...”), economic disparity, and the redemptive quality of hope. Indeed, when he sings, “Feeling bad, feeling blue, can’t get out of my own mind; but I know how to sing about it,” it feels like the album’s spiritual thesis. Throughout Quietly Blowing It, Taylor reckons with the tumultuous present in wholly personal terms, encouraging listeners to do the same. “These songs always circle back to the things that I feel like I have a handle on and the things that I’m not proud of about myself. When I think of the phrase ‘quietly blowing it,’ I think of all the ways that I’ve misstepped, misused my gifts, miscommunicated. ‘Born on the level, quietly blowing it.’ That’s what’s on my mind there. Always fuckin’ up in little ways.”Surrounding himself with a trusted cast of collaborators that includes Miller, songwriter Gregory Alan Isakov, songwriter and Tony Award–winning playwright Anaïs Mitchell, multi-instrumentalist Josh Kaufman, Dawes’ brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith, and his oldest musical confidant Scott Hirsch, Taylor has made his most audacious and hopeful work yet with Quietly Blowing It; it’s an album that speaks personal truth to this moment in which the old models of being feel broken and everything feels at stake. “I don’t know that the peace that I crave when I’m far from home exists, actually,” says Taylor. “It’s more complicated. I still don’t know what peace means for me because I can be sitting on the couch watching a movie with my family and be completely tangled up in my head. But if I keep on doing my own personal work on myself—writing records like Quietly Blowing It—I have to think that I’m getting closer.”JOHANNA SAMUELS Johanna Samuels is broadening the confines of pop music. The New York and Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter’s work is lyrically and melodically driven, singing about the depths and dualities of life with her unique bell-like voice. With her deep understanding and reverence for the musical greats of the 1960s and 70s, Samuels has created a sound and musical place that is all her own - and invites you in. Her debut album “Excelsior!” (2021), produced by Sam Evian and released by Mamabird Recording Co., garnered praise for its lush beauty and complex explorations. NPR described Johanna’s music as "...so compulsively listenable, and so smart in the way she assesses space and communication, it's just brilliant...what a voice." Johanna’s recent release EP "Scam Likely," produced by Josh Kaufman (Bonny Light Horseman, The National, Bob Weir and Hiss Golden Messenger...) with collaborations with Fruit Bats is just a taste of what's to come. Her forthcoming work, sophomore LP "Bystander,” also produced by Kaufman, will be released in June 2023. Samuels has shared stages with artists such as Faye Webster, Madison Cunningham, The Hold Steady, Bonny Light Horseman, Lomelda, Courtney Marie Andrews, Tallest Man on Earth, Fruit Bats, Anaïs Mitchell, Cassandra Jenkins, Haley Heynderickx, Buck Meek, Sam Evian, Sean & Sara Watkins and more. For this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a special two-part episode featuring both members of one of my favorite bands, Wye Oak, in conversation with some other fantastic musicians, so be sure to stick around for both halves! First up it's Wye Oak's Jenn Wasner and singer-songwriter Johanna Samuels, both of whom have new music coming out, coincidentally, on June 23. Samuels has been making beautiful, deeply personal music for the last decade or so, and her new one is a doozy. The album is called Bystander, and it was recorded with Josh Kaufman of Bonny Light Horseman—he's the Josh you'll hear referenced in this chat. Check out “Ugly on the Inside” from Bystander right here. Samuels is joined here by Talkhouse pal Jenn Wasner, who's probably best known as half of Wye Oak, but has also recorded music recently under the name Flock of Dimes. It's no wonder that Wasner and Samuels get along, as both are incredibly thoughtful and sincere in their musical pursuits: They're looking for something much bigger than a hooky song to sing, they're out to connect on a deeper level. Wye Oak has sort of morphed into a different kind of band in recent years, choosing to stay away from the make-an-album-then-tour-forever cycle and instead release singles and one-off songs as Wasner and Andy Stack are able. A bunch of those songs have just been compiled on an album called Every Day Like the Last. They sound as good as anything the duo has done, which is to say they sound great. Check out “I Learned it From You” right here. In this conversation, Wasner and Samuels talk about the magic of the Newport Folk Festival, how great it is to work with Josh Kaufman, and how to express heavy thoughts within joyful music. You'll find out whether these are women of mystery, and you'll hear Wasner refer to herself as “a big golden retriever of a person.” Enjoy. In the second half of this epic Talkhouse two-parter, we've actually got three speakers: Andy Stack, who's best known as half of Wye Oak, but who's also made some solo records under the name Joyero. Along with him is Jay Hammond, with whom Stack recently made a great instrumental record, and Joe Westerlund. I'll start with Westerlund, and I'll try to do his bio justice: He started out in the Wisconsin band Deyarmond Edison, which has a massive retrospective box set coming out this year, and which is best known as the band that started Justin Vernon of Bon Iver down his musical path. Westerlund has also contributed to lots of other song-based music over the years, drumming for the likes of Califone and his project Megafaun. But it definitely feels like Westerlund has found his true calling in his solo instrumental work, including the recent Elegies for the Drift, whose compositions were largely inspired by important people in his life who'd passed away recently. It's a gorgeous, emotional ride. Check out “The Circle,” which is dedicated to Akron/Family's Miles Cooper Seaton, a friend of Westerlund's who tragically died in a car crash in 2021. It makes sense that Westerlund got together for a chat with Andy Stack and Jay Hammond, because they all have North Carolina in common: It's become something of a refuge for a bunch of bands over the past few years, with their friends in Sylvan Esso building a studio there, and lots of folks—including both members of Wye Oak—taking up residence there. Stack and Hammond got together recently and struck gold with a series of electro-acoustic improvisations that they winnowed down to album length and titled Inter Personal—a nod to the connection that they deepened by making this music together. This is a special episode produced by Talon Stradley of Newton's Dark Room with a short intro by Art Grind producer Tun Myaing and host Marshall Jones. Talon has an amazing podcast titled The Song is Never Done where he explores Walter Martin's album The Bear. This is a collaborative project because we interviewed Walter Martin who's album cover was featured by another past guest of ours - Hollis Heichemer.Following a long career in bands like The Walkmen and Jonathan Fire Eater, musician Walter Martin crafted his 6th studio album, The Bear, warmed by a wood burning stove in a bright red one-room schoolhouse. Tackling themes of family, art, and the changing seasons of life, the album resonated with host Talon Stradley as his own seasons changed.Part memoir, part musical analysis, The Song Is Never Done is a track by track exploration of Walter Martin's album The Bear. To help us along the way is Walter Martin himself as well as his collaborators, peers, and appreciators like Matt Berninger of The National, Eric D. Johnson of Fruit Bats and Bonny Light Horseman, jazz singer-songwriter Kat Edmonson, Oscar-nominated composer Emile Mosseri, many more, and even Walter's mom.So stop in your tracks, take stock in where you're at, and get ready to meet The Bear. There are 4 more episodes left in the season of The Song Is Never Done, released biweekly on Thursday. Despite having a career that spans 20 years, 10 iconic albums, and stints in some massive indie and folk bands (The Shins and Bonny Light Horseman, respectively) you might be amazed to discover that he still doesn't quite feel like he's “made it.” But one listen to A River Running To Your Heart, his latest album with Fruit Bats should dispel any doubt that Johnson has slowly but surely become one of the most important and unique figures in modern American music. Join us as we talk to Johnson about the peaks and valleys of his career, breaking your heart with a song, his new album, and more! Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/discologist. Eric D. Johnson is my guest on the newest episode of That's How I Remember It. Eric is the singer, songwriter and principal of the band The Fruit Bats, and also a member of modern folk supergroup Bonny Light Horseman. The Fruit Bats are releasing their 10th studio album this week titled A River Running To Your Heart. We talked about that as well as the first Boston album, writing songs as therapy, anxiety dreams about shows, and how every audience is a unique organism. Big thanks to Eric for joining me here. Please listen and subscribe, lots more to come here in the future.
"I'm a wrong hallway person. I like to make wrong turns."Eric D. Johnson of Fruit Bats and Bonny Light Horseman makes a lot of mistakes. And that's a good thing, he says, because that's when the good stuff happens. "The excitement is in the mistakes," he says. "The song is a house, and sometimes you walk into the wrong room."Johnson's talking in metaphors, of course, but his literal rooms need to be a place of chaos too. The room where he writes starts off clean, but by the end there's stuff everywhere: cables, papers, notebooks, assorted musical accessories strewn all about. "The room has to be neat to start, but the good stuff happens when the room is a disaster."The Fruit Bats' new album A River Running to Your Heart is out April 14 on Merge Records. Listen now to my latest episode with Eric D. Johnson!

On this episode of the Blind Tiger Record Club Podcast, David W. Williams and Kevin Lee discuss the Blind Tiger Record Club's November Records of the Month. We discuss all four styles of the B.T.R.C. Records of the Month - Singer Songwriter, Rock & Alternative, Jazz Soul & Blues, and Classics. We talk about new releases and reissues from Bonny Light Horseman, Train, Lee Fields, and ZZ Top. The albums from these artists are discussed and clips of songs from the albums are played. We discuss the return of Eric D. Johnson, Anais Mitchell, and Josh Kaufman to the Bonny Light Horseman line up. We also discuss the major differences between Bonny Light Horseman's Rolling Golden Honey and their 2020 self-titled, Grammy Award Nominated album, and how this new release really makes the trio an actual "band" versus a side project. We talk about Train's AM Gold and how strange this release has been from its Billboard numbers to its absence at Triple A radio, even though the band has a long history at the format. We talk about the fact that Pat Monohan is a really strong frontman, but is also the only original member of the band still in Train. We dive into traditional soul artist Lee Fields new solo album, Sentimental Fool. We discuss the fact that this is his first album without the Expressions in twenty years. We also talk about producer Gabriel Roth, and how he co-owns Dap-tone Records and performed and produced Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings for twenty years. We cover ZZ Top's1983 release, Eliminator, and how it moved the band from blues based boogie rock to a more mainstream, synth driven, new wave rock. We also discuss the important branding decisions made with Billy Gibbons and Bill Ham to include Gibbon's 1933 Ford Coupe in all the album's marketing and several music videos. We also briefly discuss Taylors Swift's new Billboard record shattering new album, Midnights, and how well the album and her lead single, "Anti-hero" has done. Fruit Bats (Eric d. Johnson de Bonny Light Horseman) saca el sol interior con "waking up in los angeles", reconstituyente nuevo tema. Perro vuelven. John 8:31–3631 So Jesus said to those who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly mydisciples, 32 and you will dknow the truth, and the truth ewill set you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free'?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave3 to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.California by Bonny Light Horseman
Today's Song of the Day is "Someone to Weep for Me" from Bonny Light Horseman's album, Rolling Golden Holy, out now.
Today we will hear from singer-songwriter and playwright Anaïs Mitchell who spent the past 16 years building the world of Hadestown, a career-defining stage musical that has grown from a low-budget community production in Mitchell's native Vermont, to a Broadway phenomenon and the winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. But in March 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered theaters, Anaïs, like so many others, moved back home to Vermont. The move and change of pace inspired her to start writing indie folk songs. Her self-titled album, released at the beginning of 2022, is made up of those songs. It's produced by Josh Kaufman, and was made with collaborators like Bon Iver, The National, and her own band Bonny Light Horseman. On today's episode, Bruce Headlam speaks with Anaïs Mitchell about her new album and how Hadestown came to be. She also plays some songs off her album live, just for us. You can hear a playlist of some of our favorite songs written and performed by Anaïs Mitchell HERE.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After a week off, Taking It Down brings you an excellent episode. It begins with a recounting of a recent Bonny Light Horseman show in Georgia (2:11) before transitioning into whether The Alabama Take should exist at all (4:40). Then the guys talk a little about the news surrounding the new movie The Batman, including that it will be released soon on HBO Max (6:40). After the introductory chatter, it's a focused talk on the finales of Euphoria (8:42) and Somebody Somewhere (21:53) both of which are on HBO and HBO Max. After a break with a few announcements, Taking It Down talks the mysterious and disturbing new Apple TV+ show from Ben Stiller Severance (33:46). Subscribe, rate, review, share, and holler at us! In this episode - the first of 2022 - I have the privilege of meeting Tony- and Grammy-award winning songwriter, singer, and composer Anaïs Mitchell. Despite having several solo records under her belt and a side-gig in folk trio Bonny Light Horseman, it was her 2019 Broadway hit musical Hadestown that catapulted her to the public eye. In this chat, Mitchell and I discuss Hadestown, including its very long story of how it go to the Broadway stage. We also talk about her new self-titled record, her most personal yet, and what it was like getting back to solo records after such a long time away. Please enjoy, and thank you for listening.
Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at basicfolk.com/donate.Fruit Bats have been on the indie rock radar since the early 00's, so I'd say that calls for a double album compilation documenting their 20 years of music! However, the brains behind FBs and it's only regular member, Eric D. Johnson, is a man who tends to solely look forward. Thankfully for us, he rolled up his sleeves, dug into some old hard drives and sifted through two decades of MP3s, WAVs, AIFFs and the like that make up the band's brand new collection: Sometimes a Cloud Is Just a Cloud: Slow Growers, Sleeper Hits and Lost Songs (2001–2021). On Basic Folk, Eric talks about growing up constantly moving around and the impact on him then and now. He also gets into his time working at Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. His time there allowed Eric to evolve and embrace his folk musicality as well as the punk side he was nurturing in Chicago's scene. He also gets into reframing career aspirations after he saw a lot of his friends' careers, who came up in indie rock at the same time he did, reaching new heights that Fruit Bats just simply weren't. He was affordable many amazing opportunities before he was ready, recording Fruit Bats debut album with Tim from Califone and then getting signed to Sub Pop thanks to The Shins and Modest Mouse's advocacy. He talks about how he felt about those chances back then and how he reflects on them now. His time playing with The Shins allowed him to "climb into someone else's work a little bit," which gave him perspective on his own. There was a time when Eric ditched the Fruit Bats name to record under his initials, EDJ, in what he calls “career stalling move,” but I pressed him to expand on the fact that it might have been a really necessary move for him personally. He's been recording and playing under Fruit Bats again since 2015, which he sees as a new era for Fruit Bats, which he gets into. I also brought up Bonny Light Horseman and the incredible vocal pairing of himself with Anaïs Mitchell, who he calls his "main singing partner" these days. Eric D. Johnson is the nicest guy in indie rock and I'm here for that!! Enjoy!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
Anaïs Mitchell has won a Grammy and 8 Tony awards for her musical, 'Hadestown.' She's also in the band Bonny Light Horseman and has been featured as part of Big Red Machine, the musical project of Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and Aaron Dessner of the National. She's now out with her first new solo album in a decade. Mitchell talks with Sound & Vision's Emily Fox about leaving New York City early in the pandemic to give birth at her parents' farm in Vermont, and staying there to write an album that's filled with childhood nostalgia. After awhile of hand-wringing about the importance of Wilco's magnum opus, Matt settles in on the deconstructive and experimental bent of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. (He's also sorely tempted by the 9/11 significance of it all, but stay tuned for more on that!) Bonny Light Horseman's updated folk standards go toe-to-toe with Ben Howard's moody and destabilizing landscapes in this battle of deeply felt and Impressionistic albums.

Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at basicfolk.com/donateAnaïs Mitchell goes track by track through her new self titled release (out now!) and holy smokes what a volcano of an album! It's been a decade since she last released an album's worth of new material and since then, Mitchell's been keeping very busy with the game-changing Tony Awards winning Broadway sensation, Hadestown. She started working on the folk opera in the early 00's, she's also recently been performing with Bonny Light Horseman (with Eric D. Johnson and Josh Kaufman) and is the mom of two young kids, so very busy!! It took a global pandemic to stop everything and allow her to concentrate on her own inner world. All of the songs on Anaïs Mitchell are truly biographical, which is not the norm for the Vermont songwriter. She was actually 9 months pregnant when the pandemic hit, and thanks to a tip from a Seattle friend, she packed up her family and left the city for her home state. She ended up spending lockdown in her grandparents house on her family's Vermont compound. There, she unearthed some embarrassing teenage journals (which she promptly burned) and had the opportunity to reconnect with her younger self. Those perspectives and more were sown into this incredible new album. Let's get into it!!It was truly a gift to be able to dive deep with Anaïs and producer Josh Kaufman (who briefly joined us for this episode!). Hope you get into this album as deeply as I did. I look forward to many more inspired works of art from Anaïs! She is a treasure and I'm so glad she's in our world. After you get into this episode, you can go way back to Basic Folk Episode 8 and listen to Anaïs' first appearance on the pod. One of my favorite interviews ever!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
WTOP Entertainment Reporter Jason Fraley chats with "Hadestown" creator Anaïs Mitchell, who brings her folk band the Bonny Light Horseman to Strathmore this Friday in North Bethesda, Maryland. She discussed her folks roots growing up in Vermont and how she came up with the idea for the Tony-winning Broadway smash "Hadestown."
Susan Orlean joins Nic to talk about her latest book, On Animals, a collection of essays on all creatures great and small originally published in the New Yorker, where she has been a staff writer for the past thirty years. Orlean is the author of seven books, including Rin Tin Tin, The Library Book, and The Orchid Thief, which was made into the Oscar-winning film Adaptation. Orlean describes her lifelong appreciation of animals, as well as the extensive research she puts into all of her pieces to create the vivid work she's known for. She also discusses her early love for the Beatles, Cat Stevens, and the Grateful Dead, as well as her current favorites, Neko Case, First Aid Kit, and Bonny Light Horseman.
It's been a decade since Anaïs Mitchell released her last solo album. In that time, she's created a Tony-winning Broadway musical ("Hadestown") and a folk supergroup (Bonny Light Horseman), while also lending her vocals and writing talents to various peers' records. Now she's releasing a new solo album, titled Anaïs Mitchell. She joins us on its release day for a Listening Party.

This week, we place a call into Woodstock, NY, where we speak to a respected singer, songwriter, sometimes drummer and beloved daughter of Levon Helm of The Band: Amy Helm. Growing up in the home of two working performers (her mother is singer Libby Titus, who wrote songs covered by Bonnie Raitt and Linda Ronstadt) wasn't always the easiest for the introspective Helm, but it gave her a fertile proving ground to begin her exploration in creating her own soaring songs in the folk, blues and soul traditions. She waited until she was forty-four to release her acclaimed first solo record Didn't It Rain, with her father lending his signature earthy drums on several tracks – and this year, she teamed up with multi-instrumentalist and producer Josh Kaufman (Taylor Swift, Bonny Light Horseman) to create What The Flood Leaves Behind, her most emotive and lushly-realized project yet. With her dogs often joining the conversation from her upstate home, Amy dives into her early years trying her hand at singing in New York City cafes, having folks walk out of her folk fest shows because her band was too loud, founding the band Ollabelle, joining her stepdad Donald Fagen's group Steely Dan onstage, backing up legends like Stax soul artist William Bell and finally reconnecting with her dad in her mid-thirties as he began his late life renaissance, hosting his epic Americana throwdowns called “The Midnight Rambles.” It was being a member of that crack “ramble band” that gave Amy the final push to pursue her own lead voice. While Levon famously struggled with heroine addiction and the foibles of post-Bob Dylan and The Band fame fallout, it was when he got clean and took Amy under his wing that both of their stars began to rise again. You can hear Amy singing on his gorgeous return in 2017's Dirt Farmer. Becoming more ambitious, Amy laid down her upbeat rock-n-soul-tinged second album with producer Joe Henry in LA with notable players like Doyle Bramhall II, Tyler Chester, and a vocal choir of Allison Russell, JT Nero (Birds of Chicago) and Adam Minkoff. This Too Shall Light was released in 2018 on Yep Roc Records and Amy began to be recognized as one of the most powerful singers touring the Americana circuit. Her newest record was recorded at her spiritual home, Levon Helm Studios, where each ramble still takes place on the weekends. During the pandemic, Helm had a unique idea to keep her creative muscles strong, even when live music gatherings were not technically allowed in public. She began setting up “curbside concerts” for her friends and any curious fans who missed her songs, touring around Woodstock with her guitar, bringing a little joy to her shut-in listeners during New York's darkest hours. Stick around to the end of the episode to hear her introduce the spiritual opening track of What The Flood Leaves Behind, “Verse 23.”

This week, we take the show to the countryside of Sweden for an intimate talk with Kristian Matsson, poet-songwriter and masterful acoustic multi-instrumentalist who has released five acclaimed albums and two EPs over the last decade and a half, performing as The Tallest Man on Earth. Growing up in the small hamlet of Leksand, a three hour trek from Stockholm, Mattson was in rowdier indie-rock outfits like Montezumas before breaking out with his own dreamier acoustic material - gaining international notice with his breakout solo offering 'Shallow Grave' in 2008. Tours with Bon Iver across North America gained Matsson an adoring audience in the states, where he ended up setting up shop in Brooklyn. Most often performing solo even on the biggest stages, Matsson is known to have seven or more intricate tunings for his guitars and banjos, and with his high, cutting voice and cryptic, nature-inspired lyrics, he has been compared to some of his heroes like Roscoe Holcomb, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon but with a Swedish-naturalist touch. Songs like “Love Is All” or “The Gardener,” while gaining tens of millions of steams on folky playlists, pack quite a punch, often detailing how the cold cruelty of the animal kingdom filters into human life with its many frailties. In 2019, Matsson found his marriage to a fellow Swedish singer-songwriter ending and he holed up in his Brooklyn apartment to write, produce and engineer his newest Tallest Man On Earth LP, 'I Love You. It's A Fever Dream.' Like Springsteen's eerie and emotional 'Nebraska,' Matsson's collection is a clear-eyed view of our current state of interpersonal (and even societal) isolations. Standout songs like the warm guitar and echoey harmonica opener “Hotel Bar” - though written before he knew what would happen with our current pandemic - seem to capture the lost closeness and romance of our very recent past, where one could fall in love with a new stranger every night in a new town and think nothing of it. Sequestered in a small house in the middle of Sweden since the world shifted last year, a new Tallest Man On Earth album is sure to be on its way. Admittedly Matsson is going a bit stir-crazy away from the road, but really he's grateful to be able to have the time to explore and create new sounds without any distractions. A fall tour of the states is in the works (fingers crossed), including an opening slot at Red Rocks joining Mandolin Orange and Bonny Light Horseman.
