How long would it take to pay off $141,000 in debt? How would you do it? What would you do first? Is it okay to invest while still in debt? This week's guest is Amanda Sharratt. Amanda and her husband found themselves in over $141,000 in debt from student loans, credit cards, and other obligations, and they PAID IT OFF in THREE YEARS!! In this week's episode, we talk about how they got into debt, and how they got out of it (spoiler, without filing bankruptcy). At the time of our interview, Amanda was COO and a Financial Advisor with Whitaker-Myers Wealth Managers, Ltd. As of the time we posted this episode, she is no longer with that company. We're thilled to introduce our sister podcast, The P2P Soap Box with Marcie Maxwell. In the very first episode, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's CEO Julie Fleshman and Board member Peter Cashion join Marcie to talk about the profound impact of peer-to-peer fundraising and how they champion it from the top-down.—Despite raising over $1 billion in 2022, peer-to-peer fundraising often fails to receive the recognition it deserves in the world of development and even from the top leadership within nonprofit organizations. There is an ever-present notion that "Walks are dead," but these misguided voices fail to comprehend the true power of peer-to-peer fundraising. In fact, peer-to-peer fundraising is the most democratic form of fundraising, empowering individuals directly affected by our mission to come together and raise funds to combat challenges, seek cures, promote accessibility in treatments, and create a better world. It is only when organizational leaders grasp the potential of peer-to-peer fundraising that we can elevate our efforts to unparalleled levels of success. In this inaugural episode, P2PPF's Marcie Maxwell is joined by Julie Fleshman, President & CEO of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) and Peter Cashion, Purple Stride team captain and member of the PanCAN Board of Directors. Peter was also the winner of the 2023 Cash, Sweat & Tears Award presented at the 2023 Peer-to-Peer Professional Forum Conference in Washington, DC. Both Julie & Peter share their very personal stories of losing a loved one to pancreatic cancer - and how they have find new purpose in fundraising and a sense of community through PanCAN's signature event, Purple Stride. They also discuss how they are deepening their Board's engagement with peer-to-peer fundraising and the impact that has on their staff and volunteers. In today's episode, we'll explore:How peer-to-peer fundraising can empower a communityHow PanCAN is mobilizing its board to participate in peer-to-peer fundraisingThe decision-making process that went into moving all Purple Stride walks to the same day nationwideMentioned LinksPancreatic Cancer Action NetworkPurple StrideStay Connected on LinkedInConnect with JulieConnect with PeterConnect with MarcieConnect with the Peer-to-Peer Professional Forum (00:00) - Welcome to Engage for Good

In this podcast, we cover - 1. Taking PanCan global and multicultural insights on cancer 2. The art of translating a movement into a sustainable organization 3. Importance of doing the hard and obvious things As the Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Translating Research Across Communities (TRAC), Paula Kim brings more than 30 years of executive and entrepreneurial leadership in business and not-for-profit ventures. Paula is recognized on the grassroots, national, and international levels for her consumer-focused leadership and innovation in communication and outreach for business, healthcare and advocacy strategies. Paula Kim's commitment to advocacy, advancing research, and helping patients and families came from personal reasons – her dad's pancreatic cancer diagnosis in 1998 and untimely death only seventy-five days later. Despite no prior experience in national advocacy, patient programs, or public policy, she jumped headfirst into a major transition from building homes to leading volunteers and building hope and programs for patients and researchers. In 1999, Paula co-founded the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) with Pam Acosta Marqhardt and Terry Lierman, the first national patient advocacy organisation for pancreatic cancer; and served as President, Chairman of the Board, and Chief Executive Officer. In 2004, she resigned from the organisation and moved forward to establish Paula Kim, Inc-TRAC. Paula Kim's vision and team-building style led PanCAN's growth from a handful of online chat volunteers into a national resource for the pancreatic cancer research and patient communities, with pioneering programs for clinical trials matching, PALS-patient services, patient education symposia,survivor-caregiver networks, grassroots development, research mapping, and career development research grant funding. She also led PanCAN's policy efforts, which yielded then, an unprecedented increase of over 350% in federal government investments in pancreatic cancer research. Quotes At 2 minutes Back in the early 2000s, I had a number of advocates from other countries that would reach out to me. And so I had a group of fabulous advocates from Japan, for example, that came over and shadowed me for days on end, and wanted to learn about building programs similar in their country. They wanted to learn about how to talk to policymakers. And so I created my consulting practice track translating research across communities, for that purpose to help globally. At 10 minutes “To an extent that's why I want to congratulate you on the Manta Planner, because on one level, it seems very basic and very simple. And you say, well, why has nobody done this before? For this, I have a theory that sometimes people just don't want to put in the effort that it takes to do something. At 18 minutes “There were so many people involved in the growth of pain in PanCan. Our very first staff members and the people that we hired, and the people who were willing to give their time and their resources to a little startup group that had no track record. And the many, many volunteers who poured their heart and soul into everything that we did.” References The PanCan Website - https://www.pancan.org The PALs Program - https://www.pancan.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/brochure_PALS_2012.pdf Disclaimer: This podcast is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute the practice of medicine, nursing or other professional health care services, including the giving of medical advice, and no doctor/patient relationship is formed. In this podcast we cover - 1. Learnings and insights from the early days of setting up PanCan 2. Art and science of community building 3. Nuances of interdisciplinary collaboration and personal learning and upskilling in the face of complexity As the Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Translating Research Across Communities (TRAC), Paula Kim brings more than 30 years of executive and entrepreneurial leadership in business and not-for-profit ventures. Quotes 6 minutes “It was Pam and I, and some debt on our credit cards. And that's how we open the door. And then from that grew, many, many things. And I think most important were things such as bringing together a community of people who cared. Helping them establish a community and a voice. A voice that we then channelled into public policy to try and help policymakers and legislators understand the need for the disease, a community that we developed into volunteers that were all across the country that wanted to raise awareness in their own communities.” 17 minutes “So by building a community of caregivers and family members, we were able to raise our voice on Capitol Hill. A little bit like a Trojan horse, because we weren't as big perhaps, but we tried to make our voices loud. And then we joined together with other cancer advocacy groups and coalition's which again, was a different type of a community, right. 28 minutes “The reality is it was disproportionate because those other cancers that I named, had more advocacy and more people in Washington, DC knocking on the doors. And I said to NCI, whether we're here or not, it's your responsibility to take care of this population as all of them.” Disclaimer: This podcast is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute the practice of medicine, nursing or other professional health care services, including the giving of medical advice, and no doctor/patient relationship is formed. November 8th marks one year since we lost the legendary Alex Trebek to Pancreatic Cancer and just last month, it took the beloved Sex and the City actor, Willie Garson from us. The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) will launch its annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month campaign to raise awareness of the world's toughest cancer. With a five-year survival rate of just 10 percent, pancreatic cancer is third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Early detection is vital to improving patient outcomes, which is why it is so important for patients and families to Talk. Test. Take Control. and understand their own inherited risk for pancreatic cancer due to genetic mutations. Knowledge is power in the battle against Pancreatic Cancer. This November, PanCAN is emphasizing the importance of starting a conversation about the importance of genetic testing to understand inherited risk for this disease. Family history of the disease may increase the risk of pancreatic cancer. That's why PanCAN recommends that first-degree family members (parents, siblings, children) of pancreatic cancer patients consider genetic testing if their loved one was either found to have a genetic mutation or if they are unsure if their loved one was tested or of the results. Julie Fleshman became Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's first full-time staff person and its first Executive Director in April 2000. Having lost her father to pancreatic cancer in 1999, she has made it her passion and commitment to change the course of the disease. In July 2004, the Board of Directors appointed Fleshman President and CEO. Under her leadership, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network has driven consistent excellence and innovation throughout the programs and services of the organization, including introducing precision medicine service Know Your Tumor® and Precision PromiseSM, the first response-adaptive randomized clinical trial for pancreatic cancer. At the same time, she has steadily increased revenue growth and the organization's impact. Under her direction, the organization has greatly expanded and attracted leading researchers from prestigious institutions around the country to study pancreatic cancer.

On the Wednesday July 15th episode of Menners Live on the Kirk Minihane Youtube Network, Menners @kirkclub went on a vicious rant about DEC. During this episode, he wished DEC had an alcoholic relapse and developed Pancreatic Cancer. You've heard Menners's side of the story, now it's time for DEC's turn. In this episode, DEC walks through the timeline of events, from the tweet about Menners's business that started the feud to the "joke" Menners's made privately that he thinks DEC is a p*ssy for taking so seriously. DEC also talks about why he was so angry at this "joke" and the member of family he felt was targeted. DEC shares his story and now it's your turn to determine whose side you are on. Menners is a big mouth and that's why his wish of cancer is being countered with a wish for life.
